There was a short line, and one employee on the register. He was delightful, chatting up all the customers, getting a few laughs and smiling like he just loved serving the public. You don't often get that at a post office and it was very refreshing. The line moved along pretty well depending on how many items each customer had to process and everyone was patient. There are a couple of tables in the lobby for filling out forms. One gentleman must have purchased stamps and was putting postage on a pile of cards at one of the tables. They have PO Boxes, shipping materials and cards for sale as well as flat rate boxes and envelopes available in the lobby so you can box up your items before going to the clerk for service. Passports are not processed here, but at the Warwick Post Office. Plenty of parking in their private lot, which is 'one-way'. A drive-up mailbox is located at the parking lot exit. Wheelchair buttons to auto open the doors if you need assistance are to the side of the entrance.

This is a seriously tiny post office location. I have been in my share of small, one person, post…read moreoffices: this one is one of the smallest. There are a couple of parking spots on the left side of the building for patrons and plenty of on street parking available. Post boxes are located on the sidewalk directly in front for 'walk up' mail drops; no driving up to these boxes, they are on the passenger side of your vehicle. The entrance is a short ramp from the sidewalk. Just inside to the left are P.O. Boxes and ahead is a small counter area. There is a lot going on in this small space. There are no more than several dozen post office boxes I would say in total in a small nook. Didn't actually count them. The counter space it self is mainly clear with a scale on the right and the computer system further on, out of reach. There is a plexiglass in front of that section keeping you off the the side during your transaction. The one person working was in back when I arrived. These smaller locations employ literally one person who is responsible for receiving mail, sorting, 'putting the mail up' into the PO boxes, providing customer service and all the attendant business related paperwork. I just waited patiently for about 45 seconds until they came out to see if I required assistance. Masks are required to be worn by customers during this time, and the person assisting me was wearing a mask. Hand sanitizer is on the counter. I had some cards that needed weighing in case they were overweight; they were. I also needed more stamps as my last round of card sending depleted my stock. There is a lot of card and post card sending happening over here lately. Staying in touch with friends and family during this time of often feeling isolated is a nice surprise. I know I appreciate it when I get a surprise card in the mail. The items I requested (two specific types of stamps) were procured, cards weighed, stamped and given over to be added to outgoing mail were all accomplished quickly and professionally. This location is not exactly 'on my way' generally speaking, but I would not hesitate to stop by here at any time when I am in need of more postal supplies.

A school house to a…read more library. The Louttit library is the main library in the town of West Greenwich but actually started life as a one room school house. A simple place built in 1936 with no running water or central heat. There were four of these one room school houses in town that finally closed in 1950 when a more modern facility was opened. Since the town didn't have a real library it was decided to use one of the schools for this purpose so the diminutive building was rededicated as a library in 1951. The Louttit family, who donated money for the project, decided that the library would be more useful in the center of town so it was moved to it's present location in 1978. Of course now the building has running water and central heat and all the things a modern library has. In fact it has grown quite a bit since it's humble origins. The library was expanded in 1988, 1992 and then again in 1998and now is a sprawling building with a great community room and other additions that add greatly to it's volume and use. Even though the library is much different from the original schoolhouse, if you look carefully you can still see remnants of the past. Coat hooks and blackboards still exist and a great old bell that still rings is in the tower. Pretty cool stuff. The best part of our visit to this library was meeting the director, Elsie Palmgren Oltedale. She graciously took us around on a tour of the library and explained all the modifications of the building and discussed the history with us. She actually went to school at the old schoolhouse and talked about how life was back then. She is responsible for the progress and growth of the new library and has the new community room named after her. Definitely a deserving honor because Elsie epitomizes everything good about a library and a librarian. The Louttit Library is a useful and modern facility that hasn't lost it's history or roots. It's a great place to read or to just walk around and absorb the history of the building. As pleasant as seeing the library was the real treat was meeting and talking to Elsie. Librarians just don't get any more wonderful than her.

Located downtown West Warwick, this building shares space with the fire and police departments…read more There is some parking on Main Street, in front of the building, or turn onto Legion Way (a one way) and park in the back lot. This is where you would go for all the usual town necessaries. In better times (pre-pandemic) we would come in to pay our property taxes for example. Over this past year town offices are open by appointment only. They were taking early voting ballots here in October and the mail in ballot drop box was on the stoop out front. They also have a box (a literal, cardboard box) in the vestibule where you can drop off mail to the town clerk and other offices if you are in the area and don't want to drop it in the mail. In my experiences over the years, everyone here has been very nice and helpful. It's been a bit of a crazy year, and everything is new, still when I called asking for assistance, they were professional and courteous. Be sure to check out their website for current business hours, job opportunities, trash pick up information, when taxes are due, to report a street light is out, volunteer opportunities with the town, and so on. You can also register with the towns Code Red emergency notification system through the website.

The card catalog for books is online and if your local branch does not carry a book, you can order it from another branch for local library pick-up. The Libby app allows you to borrow audio and visual books on your phone or tablet for free! Second, they also have a 'library of things'. Sewing machine, video game, roku, tools, etc., etc. Why buy when you can borrow?! Check out their website for details. Third, free classes. Learn how to use technology with age appropriate classes and workshops. Learn to knit with women from your community. Lots of hands on classes for kids to seniors to homeschoolers. Fourth, game nignts. Play Jack Box games or board games or cards with others. Bring your own or use theirs. Fifth, evening speaker events. Local authors, historians and experts in a number of fields. All for free. Sixth, walking group. Once a week meet up with others and take a stroll along the bike path. Meet new neighbors, enjoy fresh morning air, move your body. This is a gentle stroll. No power walkers in this group so get out and socialize a bit. Seven, passes. Libraries help you save money by offering discounted or free passes to things you want to do. Eight food pantry. This is a small selection provided by library patrons. When clearing out grandma's home, don't throw those canned goods away, donate them to the library like we did. Be a hero, donate to your community, or if you are in need, just ask. Nine, shop. This library has a small shop of items for sale that support library services. Think of them when you need a little gift, or just stop in to support them. Ten, donations. If you are a big reader, the library happily takes donations of new titles. Make some room on your book case and share your beloved stories with your neighbors. When you get your library card sign up for their newsletter for a list of monthly events scheduled. My friend and I came about 3 hours before closing, and left about 2 hours later. There was not much on the first floor (besides the cutest little shopping cart for kids and the bathroom) so we went upstairs. The employee there was really helpful and told us a little bit more about the library since it was our first time. We noticed they had little Knick knacks they were selling from a club they have so I got something as a memory. In addition, they had a map where you can color in countries you've been to - they change up this activity every month. We sat in a sound proof little booth, where you can adjust the lighting. As we were leaving, the employee showed us their craft room and they have lots of materials and machines so if you've ever feeling creative but don't have the resources definitely check them out. Have have never been summoned to jury duty before. Perhaps that is a result of living in several…read morestates and countries over the past decades. Sounds reasonable. A post card was mailed with instructions to complete and online survey. Got an immediate notification that I was selected (woo-hoo!?) followed by a letter about a week later with date and time to appear for Grand Jury service. The Grand Jury meets once a week on Tuesdays and jurors must be available for a three month commitment. You find out if you are either a juror or alternate on day one and the date when your three months are completed. Jurors receive an email with which dates you will be needed. They pay $25 for each day you serve. Alternates only serve if a juror is dismissed. It was a very interesting process on day one. Bags are scanned and you walk through a metal detector. The check-in office is straight ahead and turn left. There are signs. Present your paperwork and ID and once you sign in have a seat in the next room. They had HGTV on and even though signs say to turn off your cell phone, everyone was using them. The Grand Jury does not hear trials, they hear evidence and vote on whether there is enough to go to trial. It's an interesting process of hearing state evidence and you can ask the witness(es) questions. So that's different. Of the 23 jurors, only a dozen have to vote in favor of moving forward to trial unlike at trial where everyone must agree. We were in and out in about two hours on day one. Court days you show up before 9:30 and leave nlt 4pm. There is a cafeteria and restroom on the ground floor. Court rooms are on upper floors. Free parking in garage behind the building or call to get a bus pass. Now you know.
