I was at the post office yesterday and once again experienced great service, so I am compelled to write this. On multiple occasions for various issues, the staff has been very friendly and patient. When I first moved to NY, I had trouble with paperwork proof to open a mailbox and they helped me through it. On a Saturday I came into check my mail just after closing time and pleaded with the gentleman at the door to let me in and he obliged. On another occasion, I mentioned having a hard time settling in NY and the counter lady helped me with information. Yesterday, I noticed that I kept getting the old box owner's mail and notified the counter person and he updated the records right away. The lady at the counter helped me figure out a box to post my stuff with the help of the girl who was servicing the lobby area and she even brought me tape and pen. I must say that when I first read some of the reviews, I was skeptical about opening a box here but I have had nothing but kind service every time. Kudos guys!! read more

This is a really fine post office. The curved exterior is beautiful (it was built during the 1930s, probably by WPA labor, when the government still sponsored the construction of lovely things). While lines are sometimes long, the staffing at this post office is much better than others I've been to. There are usually at least four people working. There is also a separate line just for stamps and money orders. It is usually fully stocked with boxes and forms, and if you need a form or have a question there is often an employee on the floor who is just there to answer questions and direct traffic. I have also found that clerks will often whip out the tape and reinforce my packages without being asked. I don't think any five star post offices exist, but this is the best one I've come across in NYC. read more

Nice building, horrible staff. If you want a package delivered in the East Village, you're going to have to use UPS or some other service. The people who work here don't want to deliver packages. I get the same thing over and over: they just leave slips telling me to pick it up. I leave the slip telling them to deliver it. They leave a slip threatening to ship it back to the sender. This is a big, beautiful, well-maintained post office, but it's always as full as Grand Central during rush hour. They distinguish themselves by having multiple APCs and multiple windows open for service, so the lines move at a Trader Joe's pace, but maaaaaan, it's such a stressful experience. You stumble out, blinking in the sunlight, dazed and confused - what just happened? Why do I feel lighter? Was there some -- box -- I sent -- someplace? Was it franked and marked and is it in the gloved hands of uniformed gentlemen, walking with purpose? What was that magical place? Worst post office I've visited. All the self serve machines were down...all of them, and there was a huge line to get a postal worker. I was trying to ask what was going on with the machines, and an update on the status....nobody would answer me, as they all ignored me. When I finally asked loudly what was going on with the machines, one of the workers said "I don't know anything." Worst service ever!! My daughter is been living on a building on 342 East 15 street and this post office is been worse that the ones in third world countries. I know because Im from South America and this is worse. We have 4 cases open because her stuff gets stolen even after she repeatedly went in person and asked to speak w the manager, a certain Mrs Hodges that is never available. She had a certified mail package with signature required and the post man had a random person sign "AA" and gave the package away.! #madness After she complained someone called her back and said " all we can do is offer an apology". Now when she is following up on the case, they tell her that is been over 15 days since she opened her claim, and since she never filed an insurance claim theres nothing they can do,... hu....what? Nobody ever thought to mention that this was what she required to do in order to get her money back. I sent her last week a priority package for her birthday. I explained to my Toluca Lake Post Office her situation and they suggested I put a sign that said "To be hold for pick up" and pay for insurance. So I did. As of today and after being on the phone for over two hs between the Main Post Office and this post office, the package w my daughters present is nowhere to be found. Main post office said that according to the tracking the package is being held here. My daughter went to this Post Office twice and the employees told her they don't know where this package is. Furious, i called today I talk to Celest which was a bit helpful (at least she cared), and when she looked up the tracking number, it said the package was schedule for re delivery hu? What part of the sign that says "To be held @ the Post Office" someone didn't get? Just curious. Also, why did the employees keep telling her they have no clue where the package is while it shows online the package is being held @ this post office?. This is crazy and totally out of control. After two hs on the phone, accomplishing nothing, they put me on with a supervisor , Miss Velazquez who took my daughters number and said she was going to find the package and call her. Yeah, Im sure Mickey Mouse has it, he is running the Post office with Donal Duck while Goofy is out delivering mail and giving signature mail required mail to the three stooges. This is my favorite post office in the country I have to ship things constantly for my work and everyone who works here is the absolute sweetest and realest and all so helpful. Some of the customers who come in here are absolutely horrific (thanks east village gentrifying scum) and I've watched some of the staff here navigate some really tense interactions so gracefully. Sure the line can be long some times but this post office services basically all of lower Manhattan like what do you expect? Get over yourself and wait like the rest of us. The worst worst worst. I subscribe to a post office box there, because it would make sense to think that if I have items shipped there, that they would be safe and secure, especially when you have tracking numbers. Right? WRONG. I arrive on a broken foot because I am eager to pick up a birthday present for my wife. But USPS can't find my package, which is confirmed not only by Amazon's tracking system, but by the USPS's own tracking system via their Self Service kiosk (which the teller told me to use). I give her the ticket with the tracking number and she took a look for the package. Nice lady, but ultimately couldn't find the package. She told me and my broken foot to come back later and hopefully they would have found it by then. Wtf? I'm a paying customer, it's YOUR responsibility to fund this thing. I'm here, in your place of business, and while I was very polite about it, this should not be confused as me being willing to leave so as to let you off the hook for the day. Following up, they still couldn't find it. I spent hours on hold listening to their recorded message about "delivery you can rely on" until I was ready to murder things. I even got the USPS online help team to try and help solve this. Even they weren't getting anywhere with this post office. What the hell does that tell you? I would give this post office two stars except for the best postal worker, Fan. This woman is so friendly and helpful. She always tells you all of your mail options and what each one will cost. I appreciate that she really takes the time to explain what will be cheapest and/or fastest. The other workers are pretty rude: shouting at you if you mess something up, shouting at you to get in line, shouting at you to hurry up. There's a lot of shouting. Fan, thank you for being the best employee at this post office! (NB: I went today, during Corona, and the staff were doing their best to sanitize every surface. They're trying. This place is so bad I actually had to revisit my rating and leave feedback. I thought giving it 1 star was enough, but the service and incompetency of the staff is too horrendous to simply not say something. I've taken off early from work countless times to come down here and pick up mail (that almost never gets delivered to my apartment in my absence) only to be met with rudeness and blank stares. I'm shocked that I can call the 1-800 number in advance to confirm my package is there and then when I arrive, they can't seem to find it. The icing on the cake is how snarky they are about it. Avoid this place like the plague. If there is a greater good, society would just shut this god awful place down and leave delivery to the privatized services. The staff at the 14th and 1st ave location are much nicer and much more helpful. Pray you're in that delivery zone if you live in East Village. read more

Most people don't have anything nice to say about their post office (lost mail, rude staff, long wait times etc) but I've been using this post office almost weekly for business mail and everyone is so friendly!! Especially he woman working working the floor! There's usually a wait a little after 5pm before closing but they gave multiple windows and the layout is easy to navigate. read more

I seriously can't believe how rude and extremely unhelpful the people who work here are. I'm from Denver and usually when I ship letters to a friend in Australia all I have to do is get an international stamp. I have done this multiple times in CO. But when I tried to mail a letter to my friend in Australia, I was told I need to put a return address to send it. I said ok not a problem. Then she told me that even if my letter was sent, it would be return because my package looks suspicious. WTF? It's like an envelope with a letter and 3 postcards...how is that suspicious? She literally made no sense what's so ever. She also asked me if I wanted to put a return address on it and I told her if I have to I will. Then she said that I don't have to but if I want to send a letter it's going to need the return address (so then I have to). She was talking in so many circles and all I wanted to do was send a letter. She told me she could provide a stamp but I can't mail my letters there (then what is the purpose of the post office...if your telling me I can't mail my letters). Seriously nothing she said made any sense and then she asked me as I was trying to leave if my envelope was international (even though I told her multiple times it was) when I said yes, she gave me some kind of application to fill out for international letters. It was one of the weirdest and most unhelpful places. She literally was so unhelpful and made the process unbearable that I had to leave without send my package. read more

I walked in with a prepaid label and a package, and I asked for a piece of tape to tape the label to the package. The man behind the counter told me they don't have any tape and they won't give me any tape. I told him that last week, when I mailed a package, somebody at this location gave me tape and helped me out. He stared at me and continued to be rude, telling me he didn't know what I was talking about and that I need to leave and come back. I had a great experience at this post office! I walked in, and I've been looking for a post office for about a month and looked at the line of eight people and was prepared to wait awhile. Yet, the line moved quickly with about 7 window attendants. Seven! Wow, at other post offices in California, there are only maybe 2 or 3 max attendants. When I got to the front, the lady was very kind and patient with me while I looked through the stamp booklets to choose what type of stamps I wanted! Haha, yes, I am very indecisive and could not make a decision on what to choose for my booklet. She even brought over a second book saying that that one offered more of a selection. What outstanding service! I even saved my receipt to reference her but I've misplaced it in my dorm room. =/ I was so shocked by her patience and how efficiently the lines moved that I asked her if the closer post office to me was like this. Her reply, "Why go there? Just come back here!" with a smile on her face. Aww. I will definitely return and seriously, the world needs more people like her! I found my receipt! I wish I could give this Post Office ZERO stars!!! I have never seen a business that has such inept, rude, incompetent, and lazy workers and has managed to stay in business... 2 Day Priority Package arrives in 9 days, and with a worker who tells me he doesn't deliver to the door... He rang my intercom and told me to come downstairs to get my package... I live in an elevator building, not a walk up... I asked him to please bring the package up, he told me he doesn't do that... I just got out of the shower, and was dripping wet... I threw on some clothes and went down to the lobby to get my package... I paid extra to have it shipped 2 day priority, with signature confirmation... 5 days prior, he left a notice in my mail box telling me no one was home when he attempted to deliver the package... He NEVER rang my intercom bell, as I was home ALL DAY!!! He lied... He's lazy... He's nasty... And he just doesn't care!!! I filed a complaint by following the protocol, but nothing gets done... Have no idea why they even bother having a Consumer Relations Department, as the Consumer Relations "Specialist" I spoke with, Deborah Randall at 202-789-6875 doesn't stop talking long enough to let you get a word in edgewise, and I don't think it's possible for her to be any more disinterested in your complaint... She gives me a number of a Pete Fontana, a District Manager, at 212-330-2573... I've left 3 or 4 messages on his voice mail in the last week, and have yet to have the decency of a return call... Yeah, he's interested in managing his district and listening to complaints... When I called her back and told her the Pete has not gotten back to me yet, she quickly passes the buck, again, by telling me to call this number for someone at the District Office... 212-330-4426... Someone named Kato answered... I gave him my case number, and wants to know what the problem is, as I've already received my package... Another person who just doesn't care!!! Oh, and don't even try to call this location, as they put you on hold for the longest amounts of time, and then when someone finally picks up and you start to tell them why you are calling, they tell you to hold on, and then proceed to place you on hold, again, for long amounts of time... THEY ARE THE WORST!!! I think that having an "I don't care about your complaint... I'm just here to get a paycheck" attitude seems to be the rule (rather than the exception) regarding the post office... UPDATE: Today, November 25th, the Cover Your Ass LIES continue with a Certified Letter they've sent to me, which I've received today... I have NEVER spoken with anyone named Colette Hodges (Manager Customer Service at Cooper Station)!!! ALL people I've spoken with regarding this matter are listed above, in my initial review... There is one person that I have spoken with I did not mentioned in my initial review above, and that is someone named Ms. Bonaparte... I'm supposed to be getting two packages delivered to my company from this post office location. According to online tracking it says that the packages were delivered yesterday but the mail room received no such packages. Today I call the post office to investigate and after eternal ringing someone picks up, asks for my tracking number and tells me to hold on. After holding on for 20 minutes I give up and call again 5 mins later. This time after ringing three time you can hear someone picks up the phone and immediately hang up. Unbelievable! I have yet to like a Post Office. To me, any place is about the service and people. I've run into some here who were incredibly helpful and eager to assist - while I've had others be snappy and rude and looked like they were hoping for a tornado to rip through the place. All in all I'd say about 80% of the time the staff is unpleasant so that sucks in my book. But it's the P.O. not a mall - so you come here cause you have to. I don't understand these other reviews on here. I go to this location to mail things all the time and I have never had an issue. My last visit to this location, I needed help stuffing a package to mail with clothes for my grandmother and trying to get it so it would be cheap. Paula came over and took the time to help me get everything to fit inside the envelope and she checked me out quickly on that small machine that takes cards. I sent a letter to a friend who lives on St Marks Place. The envelope was handwritten but clear (I am a calligrapher). The address and zip code were correct and I even included the apt number. Two weeks after mailing it was returned to me labeled "Return to Sender, Attempted to - Not known Unable to Forward. I don't know what the problem was but I was shocked. I certainly hope it is not a matter of the delivery person being unable to read script handwriting! read more
