This is my first review ever and I regret that it has to be a negative one, but my experience there today made me determined to write something about it to spare y'all the unnecessary stress and frustration. I had frequented this location for a while because of the convenience, and even though I had read a lot of negative reviews about them, I hadn't had a big problem until today. Matter fact, most of the workers there are decent or even nice (Charlie is a very helpful gentleman who works there), but today, I had to wait at least 25 min for god knows what reason, and when it was finally my turn, the lady who helped me had a smart ass comment to every question I asked her, laughing at me for making sure they were taking cash since some clerks only take cards or debit cards. She told me she wasn't, and when I only had cash and was about to walk away, she said she did take cash indeed and looked at me like I was an imbecile and at the end, she ended up getting mad at ME and throwing my change over the counter, and then she was talking crap about me as she walked away. Look, I've been in customer service for years myself. I do understand things like technical difficulties and being short-staffed, or some emergencies might not help you do a better job sometimes and you might feel frustrated, and that's ok. If it's because of the technical difficulties that only 3 of your 12 counters are open and I got time, I'll wait, that's ok too. What's NOT ok is that you take your stress out on your customer and start your service with a lie, or a bad joke that made me almost walk away in the first place. If you wanna be done with work ASAP and go home, let's get this over with and get the hell out of here, and not keep giving me an attitude talking about I didn't ask for the service I asked for. I don't know if it's the same woman that others have mentioned about this post office, but the one I'm talking about, her name was SEPTEMBER. Avoid her at all cost. After today, I've decided to find a different post office in the area and to never return to this one. Went here to get passports done. The lady at first seemed like she had an attitude but there was just a cultural barrier. She was very helpful and knew her stuff. The next time I need to do something passport related I am going here. The passport hours are really good too because they stay open late just check with the usps website and you can get all your information because sometimes it changes. In addition to my first complaint about this post office, this post office seems to deliver packages to local office buildings whenever it damn well pleases. I understand that the volume is extremely high, but what sense does it make to attempt to deliver a package to an office at 6:40 pm on a Thursday, and then not come again at all the next business day, which has just happened to me? One of the better hubs! I've never had to deal with an employee here. So I can't, with a good Yelp conscience, give it higher than a 3-star rating. But it's relatively clean with tons of self-service stations. My only qualm is that it's a little funky to find on your first time out. Been here few times to ship stuff. In general, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Today, I went there to make passport and was pleasantly surprised. I was ready for a long wait and difficult process, especially after being turned down by staff at USPS in Brooklyn and hearing about how the wait to make an appointment is months. Fast, friendly service. Unlike the FDR station on Third Avenue which has lots of windows, of which only maybe three are open, the Grand Central Station post office utilizes all the available bays and is organized, helpful and speedy. My last visit was the week leading up to Christmas and the place was surprisingly calm. When I was at one of the form tables, I realized I had forgotten to bring a pen and the security guard, sensing that I was searching for something, was kind enough to get me a pen from an office which I returned to him afterwards. Let's be realistic, people: we're talking post offices, here. As long as it's open, clean-ish, and comparatively efficient, I'm happy. The Grand Central post office was a pleasant surprise compared to others in the city, like Astor Place and Hell's Gate. It's a very spacious office with classy architecture and even sculptures. The self-serve kiosks can do most everyday tasks, like stamp sales and package mailing, and the line in front of the windows seemed to be moving quickly. The dedicated line for passports, numerous box/envelope stations, and ample counter space make this as good as a post office is gonna get. This is definitely my preferred post office in New York City. read more

Rate the post office? Sure, why not! The post office takes a lot of hits these days, and as it continues to shrink down services probably aren't going to get any better. The Grand Central Station office is one of the last of the really big, working post offices. In mid-town, the volume of mail is always high, so it sometimes takes a bit of time to get in front of a postal worker. Still, it is amazing how much mail goes through this place. During the Holidays the lines go out the door and round the corner, but they STILL zoom through the piles of people. I'm not so sure the UPS or FedEx could deal as well with the same volumes of impatient customers. read more

About 2 years ago, I sent a box full of gifts to my family in Texas for Christmas, from this post office. I weighed it at the kiosk, bought postage, and slipped it into the big, metal box. A week later, the box never showed and after inquiring through the USPS hotline, they told me to give it extra time since it was the holiday season. I ran the tracking number with no results. After further time and calling the postal service again, they opened an investigation and determined I was S.O.L. because I didn't buy insurance to ensure their employees wouldn't steal it. I'll never return to this post office and will ALWAYS buy insurance for gifts I'm sending to other people. I can only assume this post office is full of criminals just waiting to take packages that are untraceable. read more

The rare post office that makes an active effort to stem the tide of the 180 pounds of lard and dumb that is your average post office customer. Besides obvious, simple, logical steps like having a suitably large number of service windows open and frickin' keeping them filled with clerks, they also have implemented the genius strategy of having a guy with a cart full of miscellaneous forms and special envelopes stand by the line, making sure everyone who needs such a thing receives it--and, this is important, has it filled out--BEFORE they reach the front of the line. I know this sounds like some sort of impossible dream, some laughable 1960s World's Fair conception of a Utopian future that in hindsight seems a cruelly Quixotic joke, but it's true: this place found a way to curb the typical customer stupidity that torpedoes every other post office in existence. And because customer stupidity and related rage is reigned in, so, too, is employee rudeness. Imagine that! In fact, most employees here--and keep in mind, this is a post office--are friendly, courteous and polite, to the point where you suspect they're playing a trick on you or have all undergone experimental Japanese brainwashing. Obviously, given the location, the lines do get intimidatingly long around peak hours, but due to the improbably sensible way this place is run you usually won't find yourself waiting for nearly as long as a lifetime of post-office experience has likely trained you to expect. I mean, it's not perfect--the ideal post office would have no customer in it but you--but this place, the My Left Foot of post offices, does everything it can with what it's got. I toyed with giving this five stars, but assigning such a high rating to an establishment that is after all still a goddamn US post office turned out to be such an unnatural action that my keyboard burst into flame and my eyes began shooting blood. Nevertheless, this is a model NYC post office, and I don't even mean that as some clever euphemism for a monstrous dump I just took. Besides, four stars for a post office is practically the equivalent of six-dozen-billion stars for anything else. This right here is Post Office Impossible. read more

The clerks have upped their attitudes to indifferent, and you will occasionally even get a helpful clerk! Warning, the place frequently smells like urine. Mail going out from here to in city can take over a week, and who knows how long out of town, and receiving mail here is just as bad. I give would give 2 stars because occasionally you will get a sympathetic soul who understands what a mess it is, but overall for attitude, this place rates a zero. PO boxes are open 24 hours and there are about 6 self service stations, which is a plus, but be prepared to wait in line a long time to be made upset if you have to talk to a "human". I received fantastic service from Carl Smith at the stamp buying counter. I must've asked him for at least 25 sheets of a dozen different kinds and he kept searching among his colleagues' desks and going into the back for me, making sure I always got all I needed, always with a pleasant attitude. It was a great haul of Star Trek, bioluminescent animals, eclipse stamps, and more! Then on my way out I saw more styles I liked. I came back and when most retailers and definitely most government employees might've sighed and asked what I wanted next, Carl was happy to help me add Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to my haul. The have the most rude staff in the world! They refused to mail my pre-paid packages two times. I never had any issues at other post office. They always try to find issues on my label. If you do not accept click on lable, you shuld not provide such services online.They are super mean and super rude. Although some of the previous reviews had me a bit scared to give this post office a try, I decided to brave the storm and take my chances on going here on a Saturday morning to get my son a passport. Even though I live in Brooklyn, I've NEVER had good experiences with any of the post offices in my area, and since I was on a serious time crunch I needed this done with as little bumps in the road as possible. I arrived here about 9:30 am and there was indeed a line. Not too bad, maybe about 4 or 5 people in front of me. I grabbed my application and waited. When I got there, there was only one person working the passport line, which didn't seem unreasonable for the hour. She seemed to take her time, but at the same time I didnt mind so much, the passport process can be tricky. I did notice everyone on the line, came with their children. With school schedules and so on I could understand, aftger all that's the exact reason I was there at the time. After a short while of waiting, another passport line opened up, and the process seemed to be going smoothly, During this time, the first woman behind the counter made announcment about what exactly could be done regarding passports. New adult passports, new child passports and child passport renewals only. If you are an adult looking to renew your passport, it would have to be mailed in and could not be processed there. When it was finally my turn ( which was a about an hour or so) the clerk was super friendly and even interacted with my son ( who at this point was getting pretty restless). She took a picture of my son and then went through all of our paperwork and when we were done,when my sons father realized he forgotten his passport at home and his liscense was expired. Ms, Wilson was great in helping us solve this problem, while he went back home ( yes back to Brooklyn) Ms Wilson assured me we would get this done as soon as he returned, as she has processed most of the paperwork already. They were scheduled tro close soon which worried me to death, When he arrived back, Ms Wilson was finishing up with another customer but as soon as she was done, she helped us right away. She processed his application thoroughly and it didn't take her forever. She was great! She was helpful enough in recommending we get this expedited as we are leaving at the end of next month. She was a complete ray of sunshine and I honestly couldn't thank her enough. At many other places, if you are not prepared you are brushed off to the side and told to try again but not here. Question for you. What is the point of having a telephone number if it doesn't work? Post Offices generally annoy me to death these days but the fact that you can't call them is extra frustration. When they pick up their phone or have a usable number, I will contemplate moving up to 3 stars, where I think they generally fit. I typically like to go in there and have ZERO interaction with the grumpy staff and just use the machines. Machines get 5 and the people get 1. Hence, an overall 3 stars. Avoid this busy location during rush hour time-frames like the PLAGUE otherwise you will undoubtedly wait in a very long line (your best bet is to go in the late afternoon circa 3 PM). I was using the Priority Mail tape when the post office security guard snatched the entire tape dispenser from the table and WITHOUT A WORD , walked off with it to give to another customer. I needed to buy postal money orders twice (which aren't available from the machines), and in both lunch-time cases, the queues moved quickly, and the (different) counter staff was very helpful, clear and friendly in explaining just what I needed to do in buying the money order, and how to cancel it if I needed to. I didn't think there was a more inefficient post office than the main branch on 8th Avenue and 34th Street, and then I found this one! The lines are endless and slow with only 1 or 2 windows open during peak hours (before and after work, during lunch hour). I always have prepaid mail to drop off that I won't leave without a proof of mailing receipt and sometimes there is someone accepting it at a kiosk, but most of the times not. At least weekly, I'm told that the printer is broken, the scanner is broken, there's no separate line, and the person assigned as a "greeter" is the rudest person in the whole post office. I walked out today again without mailing my package after waiting on a line that never moved for 20 minutes. This place has one speed - SLOW. read more
