Picked up an oversized package 2/7. Clerk rolled box to outside ramp and street. He was curteous and helpful. Unexpected experience.

This is without a doubt the worst Post Office in the city. I haven't been in there in about a year because there are only so many times you can be a glutton for punishment. These are the laziest workers probably anywhere. I should clarify this by saying few of the clerks are nice and work hard and probably do most of the work and for their lazy co-workers. I usually go to the Ansonia Sta PO on 67th St- they are very efficient and the line move quickly - it's worth the 15 block walk! Today I went to Planetarium Sta because I had a large box - a female worker talked to her customer for over 10 minutes - nothing to do with postal matters - she should take a coffee break to talk to him and never come back. The gentleman that help me was very good and efficient, a gem. I can remember going into this PO in the past - workers would wait on a customer and then disappear for 10 minutes or sometimes the workers talk to each other and don't put their lights on to notify the next customer to come forward. It's amazing how they can have a line with 30 people and just ignore them to talk and feel no guilt. Today was a good experience because I only had to wait 15 minutes and I was 1st in line. Maybe the city should consider closing this PO - it's probably contributing to most of the billions in deficit that the Postal service incurs each year. The worst.... Horrible. How do places that have service this bad still exist. Everytime I am here I wait at least 45min and everyone that is actually supposed to be working either sucks at their job or is out to lunch. DO NOT GO unless you want to be treated rudely and leave pissed off. read more

If I could give it zero stars I would. Worst service and post office I have ever been to! The staff are rude, not helpful and any question you may have be ready for an attitude. I don't know how many times my mail doesn't get delivered. This last one tops everything. Ordered a Christmas gift, paid extra for two day delivery. It's now 1/5/17 and still don't have my package. I made several complaints to the main usps and finally I got a peach slip today. They didn't deliver my package because they couldn't get into the building, meanwhile they were able to deliver other mail. So they OBVIOUSLY could get into the building! And my mail didn't need a signature confirmation either. So tell me why this is still not delivered? This place is a joke. I have never had this horrible of a service. If I could use ups or FedEx for everything I would. Save yourself from being angry, that's what this place will do to you every time. read more

When I moved to this neighborhood in 1975, the Planetarium Station was one of the best post offices in the city. New York Magazine named it one of the best. As the years went on, everything changed. Nowadays, it's just a sad and insulting tale of people who don't care. They don't care about their jobs and they don't care about the people they serve. This is such a bad post office that I don't even go in here anymore unless I have to (if a package is waiting for me). I go out of my way -- more than half a mile out of my way -- to the 68th Street post office, where I am in and out in 5 minutes. These people at Planetarium could give a crap about their jobs. They're set for life. Is it any wonder that the government wants to shut down the Post Office system? It's really sad that people who have jobs don't care about their jobs. They should be ashamed of themselves for the piss-poor behavior. bad service and rude attitudes that they take toward the public who NEEDS them, who HAS to use their services. I work around the corner and only go to this post office because it is conveniently close by. There has never been a time where someone was nice. Every single employee that I have ever come in contact with all seem to be miserable and take it out on customers. If you ask for help, any type of help you get yelled at. Yes, yelled at. Any question is too much to ask for. The lines are ALWAYS long and the woman walking around that is suppose to be making it easier for the work flow of the post office does absolutely nothing but walk around and make customers feel as tho they should not be there. I know postal people get paid an awful lot. I do not have a problem with that when service is good. I cant even give this place a star. It is dirty and grimy and rude. im writing this but not confident it will do anything being as it is in a convenient location. It is too bad that they have the employees they have. This is a hit or miss P.O. First they removed the stamp vending machines due to the budget...therefore it adds more stress to the lines. Then at least two clerks have told me they got rid of 13 or 14 people so they're always short of staff. So if you're paying $90+ for a P.O. box (as I am) and no one is at window 8 you have to join the long stamp line. The clerks are always under pressure and have to ask numerous questions before finalizing their transactions. They actually hate it. Supplies are always backlogged. I've been told several times about a truck that brings the packages over 2lbs and it's not the regular mailman delivering. These guys never ring the bells!! So if I get an email from Amazon telling me my package is there and I have no pink slip, now the clerk has to go on a wild goose chase looking for a package. I've heard the clerks page for a supervisor to speak to a customer to no avail. It's a real pity. They can be very helpful and informative but all it takes is one person to mess up the flow. Wanting to see 100 stamps just to buy two or want to send a package breaking government regulations. I've live in the neighborhood for 20 yrs. I've seen them come and go. But the culprit here is management. I've seen a customer insult a clerk because they didn't have the stamps she wanted and the same clerk with tears in her eyes managed to call the next customer. I used to bash the clerks but throughout the years...I've actually listened to different versions from different clerks of in house horror. These clerks are not in charge of ordering supplies, stamps, delivering packages, ringing door bells, getting rid of the vending machines, or getting rid of employees. read more

The USPS outdid itself recently. One doesn't expect much from the USPS, or its employees, relative to intelligence. However, as positions with the USPS are one of "public trust", everyone expects candor and honesty. Sadly that is not the case. Myself and friends have not received mail, have received mail that has been compromised (opened and re_sealed) that contains personal (medical and financial) information, and clearly indolent employees have misstated facts relative to the presence of tracked packages on site at a usps station in variance with receipts / notifications, and usps colleagues that eventually find a package. One must sadly have their antennae up relative to letter carrier misconduct (e.g. using their gov't job to commit a crime) and/or acting rude, unprofessional, nasty and/or menacing while on duty, in a gov't job. Recently, while approaching my home in 10024 i noticed an unfamiliar letter carrier entering the building. I'm not stating this person is new on the route, but that i don't recall him. i prompted my friend not to be surprised if we wind up on the short end of a nasty/rude/smirk/sneer/look of dismissal. On cue this occurred after i politely said hello. This letter carrier has a govt job, with govt job benefits and he's trusted with confidential information? He may have received preferential treatment attaining the position due to stipulations that place factors other than merit, before merit. Although such hiring methods (that place factors other than merit, before merit) may be considered a "cost of doing business", with a possibly lowered bar relative to work productivity expectations, concomitant with acceptance of a lowered work product relative to hires based on factors other than merit, violating or betrayal of the "public trust" is not one of the items one will turn the other cheek for, especially if a gov't employee is acting inappropriately, illegally and/or attempting to thug it up; it merely leads one to question the wisdom of such a tack, especially given that people who are apt to be passed over may very well be descendants of people who fled their own persecutions, had nothing to do with oppressing (or whose forefathers had nothing to do with persecuting or enslaving others) those stipulated to go to the front of the line in variance with merit. One would initially default to and be inclined to being thankful and grateful for a professional work product/service provided by the USPS, and even genuinely hopeful for the personal and professional successes of the USPS and its employees; however, given what has been offered by the usps and its individual employees, one is merely left with a w(e)ariness, and suspicion of the untrustworthy nature of the usps service, its staff, its work product, its actions and tack. Based on cumulative lifetime experiences with the usps, I was not inclined to trust the USPS with anything, and used it solely when necessary prior to this nasty incident, and that tack's validity was reinforced once again recently. read more

The staff at the Planetarium post office are imbeciles. I have had multiple instances of poor service over the last 6 months, including inability to answer simple questions about a lost package that is sitting in their station (they just put it on the "outgoing" pile and back into the system), but the recent episode takes the cake. (I was able to collect a full refund on this overnight package because of the guarantee policy - what a joke). On Dec 21, I took about 100 holiday cards to the planetarium station. They were in a box with all the envelopes facing the same way with stamps in correct position. I asked the man helping the long line of people, who looked and acted like a manager, whether it would be easier for him to take cards in the box or whether he would like me to drop them individually through a mail slot. He said that he would take care of them and took the box away. The box was open and unsealed, without any lid. Well, we got home today from holiday vacation and the box had been closed up roughly, taped shut and mailed back to me with all of our holiday cards inside, unmailed, and unreceived by our friends and family. There was no postage on the box (except an old UPS label, not US Post Service, UPS) which is how they figured where to send the box. I supposed I am lucky that they just didn't throw the box out! And it took 8 days to go from my local post office back to my home. I will never use USPS again. I had a package go missing from UPS and the service was spectacular. I was able to speak to a person who contacted the local facility, who called me back, and gave the search for the lost package personal attention. That lost package was found and delivered to my door at 10pm that night with an apology. What a difference. If I could give zero stars, I would. This post office is horrendous. Each time I go here for passport processing, the employees are incredibly slow and incompetent, the lines don't move, and everyone seems to be "on break" even during rush hours. I just called the office to check if passport processing would be available this Saturday, and a very rude woman snapped at me and stated, "how do I know if it'll be available on Saturday when it's only Wednesday today?" So I asked if she could just confirm the Saturday hours for me, she said "9-2" and then abruptly hung up on me. I'm not surprised at her rude phone manners, because it is consistent with the way all customers are treated in person too. The only reason why I called is because half the time I stop by the post office, the "passport lady" is out sick. It's ridiculous. It is such an unpleasant experience each and every time. I am right between this post office and the one on 68th & Columbus. I have seen many fights at the Planetarium Office, and one very rude wandering manager. But I have to say, most of the fights were started by the customer being rude first. I have worked in retail and my heart just plummets when handed an unsigned card. If you don't sign your credit cards, you deserve all the trouble you get. It's not legal for anyone to accept an unsigned card without ID, and you are a fool to leave a pristine signature space for a thief to sign your name in their own handwriting. Long term employees burn out with a rude neighborhood, and I have seen some customers who would challenge the self discipline of a saint. So I don't mind going there, and I am especially nice to any of the employees who I have seen yelled at by arrogant nasty people. It's really insane some of these complaints. I have had the post office screw up a couple of times. It's not an existential crisis. These people have been overworked and underpaid for decades. I love the post office people, who manage to get things delivered when nothing else works. If you mostly contact people by email, you are helping the system fall apart. If you have one employee or mail person doing a bad job, write letters, and include a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs. Call 311 and get addresses for complaining. i love the workers at planetarium..they treat me nice and always help me out....i see people always complaining about pens not being available but thats because people take them...they even snatch them off the chain if they have to.if im going to post office im going to bring a pen..thats common sense..the people that complain in this area just complain because they are use to getting their way and when they dont the workers are nasty...please..... read more

if i can give this place 0 stars i would. apparently everyone that works in this office is a genius and that allows them to treat their customers like absolute crap when they ask a question about shipping a package. catch them at the end of the day and they are even nastier. yes, it must suck to have to answer stupid questions about the mail all day but does that mean you need to incessantly roll your eyes, bark at customers, be a smart ass, saunter around slow as molasses and be as unhelpful as possible? if they were actually good at delivering packages, then that would be awesome. but they aren't. missing slips, missing packages is common and the minute you try to get your package after finding out it's been sitting in their office (with no help from them), there is no apology for incompetence or willingness to help, just a response of "so....do you want your package delivered?" i try to avoid it as best i can but i work nearby and every so often have to head to that hell hole and deal with them. makes my stomach turn. read more
