Was visiting Austin for few days, and our friends took us there, the food is simply soo good tasting, and i loved the decorative ideas they had on the wall with arabic words and its English translation, especially the ones that are related to food. We tried so many thing, i guess this is the arab style , you order food more than what u need because you think "no no this is not enough" but you end up eating only half of it, but no problem we never throw any food away :). We had lamujeen, cheese flat bread, zaatar, susage flat bread, chicken and beef shawerma, hummus, falafel, baba ganohj, lintel soup and finally kabab plate .. lol but guess what!! Second time coming here, this time with the whole family. The place was packed. We ordered Adana Kebabs and some Mixed Kebab plates. Complimentary lentil soup was served first. Absolutely delicious. Complimentary hummus and baba ghanoush and salad was also served along with some fresh bread. The entrees came shortly after and the kebabs were very juicy and flavorful. A friend of ours who lived in Saudi Arabia for several years and fell in love with Muddle-Eastern / Near-Eastern cuisine was lamenting about how hard it was to find that kind of food - at high quality - in Austin. Until now. She and her husband gave Usta Kababgy a very high recommendation, so with that in mind, we decided to give it a shot. Usta Kababgy isn't a fancy place. It's nestled into a non-descript strip mall on South Lamar, and isn't very noticeable. The decor is nice and clean, but not fancy. You're here to enjoy the food, not the seats and tables! I had a Greek Salad appetizer that was delicious, and big enough to be a meal. After that, I tried to eat the Chicken Shwarma on Salad, but was only partially successful because the portions are HUGE! Nonetheless, the shwarma was delicious, and I'll be eating the leftovers for 2 days! My dining partners both needed take-home boxes (as did I) for their meals, too. Fantastic Iraqi and Turkish food at an unassuming Northeast Austin spot. The falafel was the best I've ever had anywhere -- fresh and tender, perfectly crispy. The lahmajun is like a delicious thin-crust cheeseless pizza. The Iraqi milk pudding, which is currently only available in person, is really special, somewhere between a panna cotta and a sweet yogurt flavored with a bit of rosewater. They have a small but charming patio with two tables out front. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food came out promptly. This is now me and my wife's go to place for Turkish Food! As soon as we came in, we were greeted with smiles and welcomes. The server took our order promptly and afterwards the owner swung by and greeted us as well. He took the time to talk to us and make us feel very welcomed. As for the environment, the restaurant is very clean and the interior setting is beautiful and comforting! The most important part, the food! I ordered the lamb chops and it was delicious! The meat was very flavourful and the rice is on point. Prior to us getting our food, they gave us some pita bread and hummus which was a nice touch. I am a sucker for middle eastern cuisine. USTA Kebabgy appeared to be something I'd like and I tried it for a Saturday brunch. Hummus with pita and a lentil soup are on the house. Both very flavorful and the lentil soup is new to me, I think I like it! I was very hungry , so ordered a mixed order of adana kebab and Iraqi kebab. With other kebabs like chicken tikka, lamb etc on the menu, I thought I'd try something more authentic. Both were recommended by the staff there, but I soon realized the difference and what's my favorite. Adana is gold! The juicy meat with the right amount of spices and charcoaled to perfection with my side salad pushed me to order another skewer. I think the Iraqi kebab is ok, a little more on the bland side which isn't my cup of tea. The skewers are at about 5 bucks each , I ordered three and with a big salad, my bill coming to 20$. Not bad at all, considering they serve hummus pita and lentil soup on the house. Great service, friendly staff and enthusiastic! I am definitely going back to this place although it's far from mine. I had a terrible experience here. I came with a group of friends for iftar. I wanted to order the beef skewers but they didn't have them so I ordered the lamb and it tasted horrible. It was very dry and chewy. I went to the owner and told him I want to replace it and he insinuated that I would have to pay for it. Only after I told him it tastes bad did he ask to taste it, and only then did he send my lamb back. From just the few bites of lamb, I fell extremely sick for the next few hours. I was very nauseous and definitely would have had severe food poisoning if I ate the whole plate. I know this could be a one off experience of mine as the group I went with seemed to enjoy the food. My wife thought the chicken kebab wrap was average. The lentil soup is AMAZING though. It could just be I ordered the wrong thing but any time an establishment serves something that makes one fall sick, it is an automatic 1 star review in my book. read more
