Growing up the only fresh baked pan de sal bakery was from Betsey's in LA. Unfortunately they can't be found in LA anymore and since then Valerio's has taken over. This location is right next door to Seafood City so you can't miss it. The space is VERY small and can get crowded. When I was there the line wrapped around the whole shop. Luckily the line went by pretty fast. I also love their ube bread! No other Filipino bakery can make it like them. Only bad thing is that the size of the ube bread shrunk significantly but they're still delicious. They are constantly baking pan de sal throughout the day so it can get pretty warm in the shop while waiting in line. I also grabbed some chicken siopao and it was delicious. They used shredded chicken and there's always a piece of boiled egg inside. My three purchases were under $11. I'm so glad Carson is just a short freeway drive for me. read more

So after enjoying some treats from Portos (see last review)...I found myself realizing that here in the South Bay there is a "Filipino Portos." I came to this realization when I stopped by to get some bread at Valerios and saw some yummy pastries I hadn't tried in awhile. I was all set to write about these awesome pastries that Valerios has but I realized I wrote about these in a review from 6/15/2010 already....but I just need to say it again. The American cheese roll and the ube cheese roll here are truly excellent and they are just like the cheese rolls from Porto's. It's like Valerios is the Filipino bakery equivelent of Portos. While I understand that this establishment offers a wide variety of breads and desserts, I suggest that they implement a system to regularly check the quality of their products and ensure they are fit for consumption. Fresh, warm Pan De Sol! I almost missed this tiny bakery when looking for it. Not a lot of signage and I didn't think it would be next to the Red Ribbon. I've always been coming here; for years now. The place needs a face lift and a good cleaning. In spite of all that and seeing other reviews this is still my go to bakery. Out of the many years I've been coming here one trip disappointed me really bad. I grabbed a container of putopao (it's exactly what you think, siopao and puto together. I love these). Well I finished one and went for my second one and I thought this one tastes a tad funny. I looked and there was mold! So I freaking ate mold!! The other 2 in the container had mold too!! Now who knows if the first I ate had some as well. Ugh. They need a definite face lift and manage their place a bit better. That's a big no no. BUT I still go back. LOL. My Filipino American heart is so happy to have found this place! The smell alone is enough to start up my imagination & make me feel like I've traveled to a Filipino grandma's dessert baking kitchen. I grabbed a basket & just went to town...we bought Ube bread, Ube rolls, Cheese rolls, Hopia Mungo (my personal favorite), & Ube cupcakes. They offer so much more but I had to draw the line somewhere for this visit. However, that doesn't mean I won't make a return appearance & try their turon, kutchinta, leche flan, empanadas, & SO much more! Phew! They got so much stuff here! Went here because I was craving some asian pastry delights which I grew up eating. I saw a notice up in the front that said they recently up their prices due to something about the demand. Not sure exactly, but some items were a bit pricey for some, not all, average pastries. If you're looking to grab some cheap small pastries they do have bread such as ube(taro) rolls and cheese rolls for 0.85$. Some of the bread was super hard when I examined some. I tried avoiding the some of the pastries that are stacked on the counters. I bought some ukoy which I never had before and it was alright. Pretty greasy, and a little tough to chew on which may be because it wasn't fresh enough but it still tasted good with the vinegar? it came with. Also got some bread with spicy cream cheese filling inside. And some meat buns. My favorite item I bought there was definitely the turon rolls! Banana and Jack fruit rolled in a crispy glazed coating, almost similar to an eggroll. These turons go for 8.50$ for 10 pieces and I just had to buy it because it tastes sweet, tangy, and delicious and it just appealed to me personally. PAN DE SAL IS THE BOMB HERE! Matter of fact, it's the best here. I can attest to this because my mother will drive from LA to this location just for their pan de sal. The LA location is down the street from her but she says it tastes different, and it's no good. She also states that she will purchase a bag from this location, bring it to LA and drop it off on their counter and say "this is how your pan de sal is supposed to taste!" Mama be crazy! Pan de sal is best warm and fresh out of the oven. I like to swing by before my weekend shifts and grab a few bags right when they open at 7AM. My coworkers love, love, love when they see me walking through the halls with bags of pan de sal! So affordable too. A dozen for about $2.50. Delicious with butter, cheese, chicken spread, egg salad, peanut butter, plain, whatever. Enjoy it with coffee, milk, tea, water, whatever. Just a delicious marienda (snack in Tagalog). I see the same staff here all the time. They are great at what they do. Their bakery stays stocked well. There's a ton of other goodies here; ube bread, cheese rolls, ensymadas, puto, hopia, buko pandan, leche flan, turon, kutchinta (probably spelled wrong), casava cakes, and more. My Pinay friend told me not to go here. I don't listen to anybody when it comes to food =P I got mini ensaymada, corned beef pan de sal, adobong mani and ube donut. Mini ensaymada ($4.99 for 6): I like ensaymada but not from this place. Corned beef pan de sal ($1.98): 2 in a package. I ate one and threw away the other one. Adobong mani ($2.49): fried peanut with garlic that is supposed to taste like adobo. It tasted like greasy peanut..no garlic flavor whatsoever. It was late in the afternoon when fellow Yelper Fia R. and I stumbled upon this tiny Pilipino bakery. It was my first time to Valero's so we made a quick stop to learn more about their pastries and breads. The lighting inside was modest and there were lots of people ordering from the large counter and perusing the shelves stacked in all corners. It was unclear where the line was but I finally managed to get the server's attention after eyeing all the goodies in the store. I get very indecisive at these kinds of places, but settled on a Sweet Cheese Roll (75 cents) and Pan de Ube (65 cents). These breads were sizable, heavy, with a buttery soft doughy texture before I reached the creamy middle. The bulky Cheese Roll was deliciously sweet and covered with powdered sugar and custard-like sweet cream at the core. The texture was the softest I've tasted on Pilipino bread but still a bit rough compared to other Asian bakeries. The Pan de Ube was phenomenal as the bread was loaded with mouthfuls of thick purple ube and buttery delicious. Flavorful, this was the best ube bread I've encountered so far. They also sell Pan de Ube for $2.49 for six so it's certainly something I will have to keep in mind. Other Yelpers seem to enjoy their hot Pan de Sal so it's one of many items I'd like to try on the next visit. Notable limitations include the absence of labels and prices on the stuff they store at the counter. Also, the busy atmosphere will require you to mix with the crowd and know what you want by the time you get to the counter. Service was bit rushed but still friendly and knowledgeable. NUMBER OF VISITS: 100 + over the last 10+ years or so... WOULD I COME BACK: yes My family and I have been buying bread from these folks for over a decade! In the recent years the variety of their bread items have expanded their offerings to pies, kakanin (Filipino sweets usually made of glutinous rice, rice flour, root vegetables, etc), turon, ginataan, and snack items. What I like about this place is that they are always baking bread, so the likelihood that your bread will still be warm is definitely there! Before they got fancier, fresh bread was given to you in a paper bag and you could feel the warmth and smell the fresh bread as you take it to your car. This place isn't a fancy bakery, nor does it have a ton of centerfold foodporn looking baked goods. This is an old school bakery where you really will find baked items. The place smells like bread, so it's more smellporn than anything. Recently, I've noticed they have meat filled pan de sal items that have adobo, spam, menudo and cheese fillings. They have so many variations of pan de sal (literal translation is salted bread). They have a lot of stuff I like. The ones I can remember I typically get off the top of my head are: Pan de ube, ube roll (Filipino version of Porto's cheese roll), turon, kutsinta, sapin sapin, puto bongbong...i'm sure there's more but I try to limit carbs when I can. LOCATION: It's in the same plaza as Seafood City, Chow King, Red Ribbon and Jollibee. Actually, it's sandwiched between Jollibee and Red Ribbon so you can't miss it. Overall a good bakery although they need to clean up and remove the unnatural, cancer causing ingredients, food dye ie. yellow 5, etc.. Its not needed, they just need simple ingredients. Hot pan del sal and cheese rolls! When you walk in there it can be confusing as everyone is moving quickly and the gals at the counter seem to want you in and out! There is usually a line around the table in the middle. Grab stuff that has been pre-packed/priced in the containers like cheese bread (Senorita rolls and American style), empanadas and bread. If you don't want a container and only want a few pieces of something you can pay per piece at the counter. When you get to the front, there are extra things in the refrigerators/freezer like Siopao (steamed buns) and embutido (like a meatloaf). NOTE if you want fresh pan del sal (bread rolls) ask at the cashier. They have white or wheat and they come in a brown bag fresh outta the oven. My girlfriend and I love this bakery cause they sell cheap and delicious pastries/ sweet treats. People that didn't try Filipino food yet; this is the place to get an introduction since it's all desserts and hand held food. Their Pandesal buns are a must! You can even eat it without flavoring since it's delicious by itself. It's like a Filipino version of those Hawaiian buns in a dinner table, but bigger :) $2.50 for a dozen, super affordable and if I'm a hobo I would buy it everyday to survive. They have more Pandesal bread flavors like the ube(taro) and even chicken and pork. There are a lot more delicious treat to try in this joint and I can't name it all since it will become an essay review. First time I went here I ordered pan de sal and the egg pie. I was buying these items on behalf of someone and their egg pie was really brown (over-baked)..nevertheless everything was fine. Second time I returned, I bought a few things along with the pan de ube and I have to admit as soon as I walked in the shop i was in an oven! As bad as it was outside..probably almost 100degrees inside was 10x worse and their bread was even hot! Horrible. We just bought a macapuno haba haba today and when we got home, I noticed the mold on the back of the bread. Very upsetting especially since I really wanted to eat that bread! K. Been a long time since I've been here and I'm glad I revisited. I got off work early and beat traffic and was craving hot pan de sal. I stopped by this place cuz it's the only place I know that makes 'em that way. @7:50am, there's not too many cars in the parking lot. Sweet! I go inside, and wouldn't you know it, it got bigger? How? I wonder? There's no way Red Ribbon gave up their space cuz that biz is thriving. Oh yeah! There was that place that sold traditional filipino clothes but it's gone now! Valerio's took their spot. I posted pics but was kind of in a hurry so they're kind of at terrible angles, but trust me, the place is bigger. More space for people to line up in! Haha! And wouldn't you know it, I still had to get in line at that point. But along with the bigger space, came the change in attitude. I asked for hot small pan de sal (with fingers crossed) and sure enough, they had it! Yay! I've gone there twice and they've always both times! w00t! There was one cashier up front that told me they only sell 'em in plastic bags, but when I insisted, instead of being lazy, she actually went inside to ask and I got 'em! And she even handed it to me with a smile, haha! I didn't really check out the rest of the entire stores to see if they have price tags on the items this time, cuz I couldn't believe a line was starting to form and I didn't wanna wait so I didn't look. Seriously, this is where you go for fresh Pan-De-Sal. I can't think of any other spot where they have bread as fresh as this place. Its a chain, so you can find this business in other cities where it is SATURATED with Filipinos. Vallejo, Wes Covina, etc. This specific Valerio's is as Filipino as it is going to get. They sell the fresh pan de sal in a brown bag, other Valerios sell it in a plastic bag. The brown bag makes me feel I am actually in the Philippines picking up pan-de-sal. Awesome Pan De Sal is made here! This branch of Valerios makes it better than anyone else. You can smell the pan de sal before walking in the door, and it is always served hot and fresh. They come in a brown paper bag, and we start devouring them once we walk out their door. They sell many other items. The cheese pimiento bread is pretty good. They get 5 stars from me because their pan de sal bread is as good as it gets! read more
