I called and spoke to the cashier name "Tess" to let her know not only the pandesal is only 10 pieces and it should have been 12 pieces and it wasn't warm nor hot pandesal. Valerio's has expanded making it a lot more comfortable to cruise around for sweet baked goodies that are sold here. I picked up the steamed chicken buns called siopao which are 4 for $6. They're decent but I wish they were a little more generous with the chicken filling inside. Also, I think the mixture is a tad too sweet. I know Filipinos like sweet flavors but I think this is over done. I also found that one of the 4 buns was torn on the bottom so that part of the contents was leaking out in the plastic container. They do have some awesome baked products and desserts so although the buns were a little disappointing, there are still a lot of other goodies that make you keep coming back. read more

Hubby and I were driving to the Japanese market, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw Valerio's bakeshop. Then something clicked in my head making me remember that I bookmarked this pace to try, so I made him screech into the parking lot. While I was walking up to the store, I started browsing the Yelp reviews. Ok, basically, hot, fresh bag of pan de sal for just $1.99! Got it. Walked in, and was just in awe of all the baked goods in there! They definitely had a lot of baked goods with ube (taro) in it, which I just love! But I decided to start my first trip with a bag of that pan de sal everyone keeps raving about. Yes, you can get it on the shelves, but those are already cold and sad. If you just walk up to the lady at the cash register and say one (two, etc.) bag of pan de sal please, she'll hand you a large paper bag filled with 10 enormous hot out of the oven pan de sal. You'll hand her $2, and get one cent back. BEST EVER!!!! I really can't wait to go back and try the other baked goods, but it's going to be hard for me to not go for that hot, fresh pan del sal again! read more

Wow, this place is tiny, tiny. I only chose it because my turon hook-up in Orange County bailed on me. Thank goodness for yelp - I found that this place had high yelp reviews and I was on my way up to the area anyways. I ordered 60 turons via phone for a party I was hosting the same evening. The ladies at the store hooked me up with these delicious little crunchy fritters of fried bananas and jackfruit wrapped in an eggroll wrapper. They had it all boxed and ready to go when I picked it up. Nice. But that wasn't all... I looked left and there were delicious looking pan de sals. I looked right and there were ensaymadas, all cheesy-looking and winking at me. I started picking up things - one, two, three... by the time I got to the counter to get my turons, I had about 6 other little bundles of breaded goodness with me as well. Everything is reasonably priced - 60 turons were $36. My Orange County place was going to charge me $1.35 for EACH turon, totaling $81!! Somebody described this place as the Filipino Porto's, and I'd have to agree if Porto's had a dingier, tinier, sweatier, grungier baby sister. But don't let the looks of this place deceive you! With over one million Filipino-Americans in SoCal, Carson has become a hub for tiny Filipino immigrant-owned shops and Filipino-American supermarket chains. It's no surprise that I took a drive over to Carson in search of a Filipino bakery. I didn't really know what types of treats I was looking for. I was just looking for something to be able to take the peeps at Marlon E.'s UYE. I walked in with an open mind and hoped to see something that called out at me. That didn't happen at all. There were tons of options, and all of them looked pretty tasty, but nothing that was a sure buy. I even saw packages of that pan de sal that everyone had been raving about, but no one in the shop was grabbing any of that. That's when I decided to leave it to the pros. I just started grabbing whatever the Filipinos in line started grabbing. Did you just grab some empanada-looking things? Well, so will I. American cheese rolls? Doesn't sound very tasty, but let's go for it. I even realized that everyone in front of me wasn't grabbing the pre-packaged pan de sal, but asking for it at the counter! I walked up to the counter as my turn came and made sure to say what everyone else had said, "two bags of pan de sal, please." The lady behind the counter was quick to oblige, but I still saw that she was looking at me, and my purchase, with a bit of puzzlement. I felt like I had to explain what I was doing buying all of these pastries. "Uh...I'm going to a Filipino pot luck." - "Oh! That's good. You got good things! How did you know?" "I just did what everyone else was doing." - "Ahhhh...You're a smart boy!" It's not too often I get a compliment with my change, but I'll take it. As I walked around the small bakery several things spiked my interest: CHEESE ROLL - not as good as Porto's - sweet but the pastry isn't fluffy UBE ROLL - contains coconut shreds - same as the cheese roll; pastry isn't fluffy or layered; it's just bread SENORITA BREAD - severely disappointing. - nothing like the Crack Bread from Star Bread Bakery - no buttery goodness just unnecessary carbs Service: relatively quick but may be hard to communicate with them if you can't speak Tagalog. Prices for items are unlabeled. Environment: large display case of rolls. Refrigerated stuff like a cheese dip and desserts on the bottom. Hot empanadas nearby the register hidden in the corner. Many open shelves of bakery goods in bags or plastic containers. Overall, most people purchase the Pan De Sal or the bread NOT the rolls that I purchased. Must order a bag of Pan De Sal ($2.25); not sold individually. They also have stuffed pan de sal with meats not sure how those taste. Probably not likely to come back. The pan de sal, their signature bread, is baked twice a day: once in the morning and the other in the afternoon, around 4:30 pm, I think. You can tell because there is usually a line that extends outside the door. The line moves quickly, though. Their pan de sal with filling (menudo, adobo, chicken, tuna, or corned beef) is filling enough for a meal. The bread is really fresh and if refrigerated, stays fresh for days. For the pan de sal-related items, it indicates what time it came out of the oven. In addition, they have other traditional and authentic Filipino breads, pastries, and sweets. Their kutsinta is sweet, but not too sweet. Their turon (banana with jackfruit, wrapped in eggroll wrap and fried) is amazing. You can't buy just one. They also have siopao, bibingka, and hopia. They have the largest variety of traditional Filipino bread and pastries I have in the Los Angeles area. Lastly, the prices are super low. A dozen pan de sal is $2.29, turon is $0.70, etc. read more

I'm super totally white washed. Or Americanized, however you wanna call it. I don't speak any of the languages, and I don't even know the food by its proper names. Eating pancit that wasn't made by a family member is unheard of. But I was having a random conversation with someone and they said "corned beef and pan de sal" and my Filipino spidey sense starting tingling. It's all I could think about. I asked my mom where to get pan de sal and she said Valerio's. She had to explain where it exactly was, because I had no clue. All she said was "by Jolibee and Seafood City" ( translation: parking is a freakin pain). I rolled in a little before noon and there was a line outside the store. There are shelves of stuff with coconut and ube and cheese (whatever they're called, I dunno) that look pretty good. I had no idea how to order, so I grabbed some bagged pan de sal from a shelf. Wrong move. After a couple of minutes, I watched as everyone came up to the counter and said "1 bag" or "2 bags". My turn came and I got 2 fresh bags in addition to my sad, smashed already bagged bunch. They put the hot pan de sal in brown bags and throw in plastic bags that you're supposed to transfer the cooled down pan de sal in after. I was told this after, but at the moment I was all "why you wasting plastic, lady?". Anywhos, they come out delicious and hot and perfect. So hard not to sneak a taste on the way home. Your car will smell sooo good. I had corned beef and pan de sal for every meal for 3 days straight! read more

I love their Turon, which a piece of banana wrapped in a spring roll wrap and deep fried. It has a glaze of sugar over it. Drink with milk and enjoy. I love the fact that they remodeled their store and that they accept major credit cards. It's a plus, plus, plus. There are other sweet Filipino delights and of course the famous Pan de Sal. Its a super soft dinner roll. Its baked daily and fresh. Its so soft. Love it. Goes well with any meal. read more

Exterior - Located on the busy intersection of Carson St. and Main right across from the Yoshinoya and Blue Lotus. This Filipino bakery is in the same plaza shared with Seafood City, Jollibee, Blockbuster, Papa Johns, and Red Ribbon. The parking lot is pretty decent size with a capacity of about 50 parking spaces, however it gets crowded with people that take up two parking spaces and that cannot drive. You have been warned. Interior - No chairs. No tables. This is one of those bakeries where you go and grab whatever you want while lining up. They offer goods such as cream fillings, fried bananas, puto pandan, siopao, empanada, and pan de sal. Food - This place is packed usually for the Pan de sal rush. People come here for their freshly made pan de sal. I've tried it when it was warm and was delicious. You can compliment the bread with peanut butter, nutella, or whatever you like to put. Their heated food is not bad. They have pork and chicken fillings. I've tried their puto bandan and it was okay, rather make it at home but if you're lazy or busy and craving it then it would do. Customer Service - It's honestly a hit or miss. There are some workers who just doesn't want to be there while others are appreciative of your business. Upon ordering your pan de sal, ask if they have any that are fresh from the oven. I wished they take cards sometimes, but I usually have some amount of cash on me. So remember this joint is cash only. Overall - I'd recommend giving this bakery a try if you are craving or like to try some Filipino baked goods. They have a pretty good selection. This is THE spot for pan-del-sal. Been going here for as long as I can remember. It's located in the most Filipino plaza, which also happens to house the "big names" like Seafood City and Jollibee. Getting into the door of Valerio's is a tough one...parking sucks here with all the people trying to do their grocery shopping or get their yum-burger on. My favorites are the pan del sal, which is AMAZING while hot! It's even good enough to eat alone when freshly baked. When hot, the bread comes in a brown paper bag. It's packaged in plastic when cooled. I prefer the wheat option (yes, they do have wheat), but my parents and siblings beg to differ. If you like cheese, the rolls with pimiento bread are also another good choice, and something filling to eat on the run. read more

This place is just o.k. for me. The service is a hit or miss, sometimes they're shady and do not smile and it's just take your money for them. What I hate about this place is that there are always so many people here, the crowds here only die down two hours before closing--which is definitely when I go now. Sometimes they sell breads that are expired such as moldy bread like one time in the Ensaymada I bought. And sometimes the butter or margarine on their breads do not smell good anymore as if they went rancid. But on the bright side my favorite items never have anything wrong with them such as the Seniorita bread, the Filipino Cheese rolls, and the American Cheese Roll. They have some Filipino snacks or deli food like Vegetable Lumpia, Ukoy, and sometimes Pancit Palabok. They're okay but I like better Casa Filipina's (the classic bakery next to Unimart). Sometimes Tropical Bakery's veggie lumpia has no taste and especially their Ukoy and Palabok. Not to forget, they make the best Pan De Sal here, but I never eat it plain (too beneath me) I buy the pimento spread or ask my mom to fill it with corn beef. Pan de Sal, Bibingka, Pan de Ube, Pan de Coco, Hopia Hapon, Turon, Siopao and Egg pie. Pretty much any type of Filipino pastry dish you can think of. Their stuffed Pimiento Bread is a hit along with the cheese breads and honey bread. They also have beef and chicken empanadas. (I personally think the chicken tastes better than the beef) Pretty much they have a LOT of Filipino baked goods - anything you can think of. I recommend if you want HOT pan de sal, go either early in the morning 9-ish or 7pm ish. Sundays are the worse because they get cleaned out in a second, especially after St. Philomena's masses on the hour. People think that the bread is old if it's sitting on the shelves, but really, its only a couple hours older than what is just coming out of the oven. Overall, the bread is made fresh daily and this is a family owned chain. Chains are located in other areas in the LA area, Seattle, Vegas, San Diego, Nor Cal and even Hawaii. You can't go wrong with the food here. And yes it is CASH ONLY, no debit or credit cards. read more

LOL Went here on a Sunday morning so the store is kinda packed with people and long line of waiting to pay. I got the Ube Kalamay, Little cheese pimiento bread, Bibingka, Ensaymada & the Ube bread! We've been going here for 14 years and we love this place. My older son who is 11 now has been going there since he was a baby and he loves it. Now my 4 year old and 21 month nephew love their bread and desserts. It's a hole in the wall, but their breads are baked fresh daily and not delivered to the shop. Nothing fancy, just a little hole in the wall bakery but I LOVE their Pan De Sal bread. Especially if I get lucky and it's steaming hot right out of the oven! I live in Anaheim and drive all the way to Carson to pick up a bag of this yummy bread after I stop by my fav pizza place down the street ( Rosario's ) . Only 2 bucks for 10 big rolls of bread( It's kinda like Hawaiian bread but better and fresh and super soft) I usually finish the bag in a few days so I just leave it a dark drawer ( keep out of sunlight and your bread will stay fresh longer) and when I want one, i just pop it in the microwave til it's soft again - add butter (or peanut butter even) and oh my gosh, it's still so good even days later!! you can refrigerate it too and microwave it if you want it to last even longer but never lasts that long in my house.. lol BTW , last time I was there, I was in the store for literally 5 minutes and 4 or 5 customers came in buying pan de sal (and other stuff too) but every single customer got the pan de sal so that tells you how popular it is! Tried the Ube bread ( Purple yam bread- not bad) recently. Cheese rolls pretty good but not every roll was evenly distributed with cheese so that was kinda disappointing. Highly recommended pan de sal does not disappoint. My daughter have eaten two already while we're looking for Lola next door. Best eaten while hot. Always freshly baked! They do have A LOT of goodies like bibingka, cheese rolls, kakanins, bananaQ, turon, etc but they do not look very appealing for me. Yes the Pan De Sal is the best. My pops always gets his morning bread here and I would eat the excess. I use the pan de sal for at home fixes for almost everything. Forget slice bread, pan de sal is the best for burgers, turkey burgers, chicken sandwiches, garlic bread with your pasta, tuna sanwiches, peanut butter and jelly, and the list goes on. Valerio's is just AWESOME! Whenever I'm craving for some fresh pan de sal or any sort of Filipino bakery, I drive over here. Its inconspicuously located next to more well known Filipino places like Jollibee's and Red Ribbon so you one can easily overlook Valerios. But don't let its first impression fool you - its a local favorite. Generally said, you will never enter the bakery without some sort of line but go figure - its pretty small. There is a vast array of filipino bakeries good here from pan de sal, ube bread, ensaymada, etc. Come around 5-6pm and you can walk home with a fresh out the oven yummy goodiness. read more

I'm glad to see that they expanded, they have so many goodies I wish I could try them all. I have to mention that they also now take credit cards which is a plus as I never seem to have cash when I want to go shop there. Things that we love, definitely the Pan de Ube, the bread and the filling is delicious and they never skimp, its a good ratio of bread and Ube. They also have small meat filled buns which come (2) in a serving for $2, those are also really good. They usually have them set up closer to the counter in front. Another gem that we just recently discovered was the Carioka. I havent had or seen any since going to the Philippines. Carioka's are fried dough balls on skewers with a sticky center, that have a sticky sweet syrup on the outside and delicious when fresh. I don't know how often they stock these, sometimes when we seem to come they don't have any but when you can get your hands on these you will not be disappointed! Solid four stars for the PAN DE SAL. If you have never had these rolls, wait and eat them fresh. They come with the warm heat of the oven. They can come in wheat, egg and white. They do run out of bread, its a real bakery. I have also tried their sweets. The chocolate cupcakes are moist and fluffy with a strong chocolate flavor. The bibingka was solid, not to sweet and dense. I am usually not a big bibingka fan. The big negative is the cheese rolls. Not enough cheese, too much bread and a bit of margarine on the top. Just not a well balanced cheese roll. So disappointing. Hi-oh Pan de sal with Coconut Jam, rocks, or with a fried egg or with butter. I hope its not an addiction. read more

Best Pan De Sal ever! I've been eating it from here since i was in high school. Order from the register you get nice and hot ones. Dont come during peak hours (when people get off of work) because you'll be waiting in line for thirty mins. This place has a good variety of good Filipino sweets that are not found in other Filipino bakeshops. Casava cake is really delicious! They have puto bungbong.. Only Christmas seasonal sweets.
