Just went in yesterday for a cleaning, exam and x rays. The ladies who work there are sweethearts. I really don't like my teeth being worked on and it's not my favorite place to go but they made it pretty hard to have a bad experience at all. This is a top-notch dentist! From the moment I walked in, Bebe made me feel incredibly welcome, and was able to get me on the schedule right away! When I went to my appointment the next day, Dr. Avery took the time to introduce herself and get to know me before we got started. She is not only highly skilled, but incredible personable. Dr. Avery and her staff are the best in the business. I don't even know where to begin.... When I went in for a routine cleaning, I was shocked to find out that I had not one, but over four cavities in three molars. I work as a server in a local restaurant, so you can only imagine how scared I was to see the proposed bill for the treatment. Bebe was extremely kind and understanding about financial needs...she calmed me down from tears and gave me many options, which in the past, have not been offered from other dentists! During the actual treatment - filling cavities, Dr. Avery was a dream come true! She is very in-tune with your needs, is constantly asking if you are doing great, and she uses an awesome support staff to make sure everything is done correctly and efficiently. I was in and out with no pain, no fear, and all with a financial plan (thanks to Bebe!). Bottom line, do yourself a favor and make Dr. Avery and her staff your dental care provider. **See towards the bottom for my updated review (and comeback to the 1 star review that even ADMITS to their own shortcomings of the situation in their review!!!)** Since moving to San Diego two and a half years ago I needed to find a local dentist since the one I had previously gone to, I had seen for 20 years (but is not local to me now). After going to one other dentist, I thought I would get a second opinion from Dr Avery and I am glad I did! When I first arrived, it felt like home....their office IS inside a converted home! I made an appointment with Bebe for a month out as I called to make an appointment on Christmas Eve, but Dr Avery was on vacation at that time which was fine because I was just looking for a quote. They were able to send me the initial paperwork by email so that I could have everything completed and ready for my file as soon as I came in for my appointment. My appointment was on Martin Luther King Jr Day, so the office was very busy with a lot of government workers that could finally make the time to go to the dentist without having to take time off work. I was in and out of their office within 1 hour which I was impressed about considering the first dental appointment was 3 hours (xrays and cleaning at the other dentist). The chairs are super comfortable and they have TVs from the ceiling that you can watch. Normally, dentist's just have pictures on the ceiling. Dr Avery came in and she was so nice and thorough. She actually cares about her patients and I felt very comfortable with the advice she gave me. She even suggested doing LESS dental work then the other dentist had suggested and her prices are a few hundred dollars less than the original quote I received! Dr Avery only takes Delta Dental, so I have to change my current coverage if I would like part of the work I need done completed at a lower cash out of pocket cost. The work I was quoted for was one tooth extraction and one cavity with crown replacement. Fortunately, because I have no tooth pain, I am able to wait a few months to have the work completed. Dr Avery gave no pressure to have any work done and said whenever I am ready that she can help. When it came time to leave, Bebe at the front even wrote down details for me to research and have my insurance changed which I did within 2 hours of leaving my appointment, but learned that my current HMO coverage would go up another $20 a month. I will make the switch as soon as I can! The dental assistant that greeted me was also very nice and I even got to meet one of the dental hygienists, Susan, that has worked there for 12 years later that evening as I live close enough to the dentist to walk there. She recognized me from earlier that day being in their office and let me know, "You're in good hands." when I told her that I had been 'shopping dentists'. Parking is on the street and free and unlimited (no 2 hour limit, just note the street sweeping signs once a month between 7 and 10 a.m. on Hornblend...a $55 ticket...) I don't think anyone really enjoys going to the dentist, but if it's necessary, I would definitely check out Dr Avery! 4/13/16: **Re: the negative review on here for insurance coverage...get the OTHER side of the story!! Bebe is GREAT! 8 years with Dr. Avery (ok, that location, I think there was a different dentist there....before my time). Bebe explains the pricing before services are completed (if needed...). The other woman sounds on this business' Yelp review sounded like she just HAD to vent about something that was explained, and would have been explained again, if she reviewed her quote. Bebe writes down the amount due and offers quote print outs for major work (or any work if you need it). I went back for a checkup appointment with Premier Access Dental coverage and everything went great even though my dental coverage is out-of-network. (They prefer Delta Dental plans) Bebe calls the insurance for you and suggests you call to verify/double check (if needed). This was my second time for a dental check-up and they have also quoted me for major dental work and I have never felt misled by the pricing and paid cash for any remaining balance owed. Bebe is thorough and informed UP FRONT what would be owed if I had any major work done. Any monies owed they will take on a payment plan. This is the second dentist I checked while living in San Diego and they are far better with the pricing and being upfront with what work is done and how soon to have the work done than the other dentist I went to for a quote! read more

I've been going to Dr. Hadaway for about 3 years now and his group has really helped get my gums back on track. I've never had a cavity but spent too many years brushing too hard which was causing my gums to recede and become susceptible to disease (gingivitis). Through a lot of extra visits and care, we're finally getting my gums back to a healthy state. The hygienists are top notch and everyone does a great job making you feel more comfortable. They're not out there to make extra money off you, pressuring you to do cosmetic stuff. They're really interested in keeping your mouth healthy more than anything. read more

My little brother and I still blame our mother's insistence on going to a family friend who was a (super-creepy and painful) dentist for our absolute terror of dental work. That being said, I am usually a whiny, unhappy, picky person when it comes to anyone poking around inside my mouth. Having shared this info with a friend, she recommended Dr. Avery to me, and I have never been the same since! This office is filled with the most caring, fun-loving, yet totally efficient people I have ever encountered in a medical office. From April, who does all appointment booking and insurance processing (and leaves great voicemails), to Susie the most hilarious hygienist I have ever encountered, I actually look FORWARD to going to my dental appointments! Dr. Avery herself is so gentle, and SO good. You don't even feel the "tiny bit of pressure" that she warns you of when she delicately uses the needle of novacaine, as she constantly checks to make sure that you are comfortable and aware of what is going on. It also doesn't hurt that above every chair there is a tv and headphones if you just cannot stand the sound of the drill and need to zone out. I *LOVE* Dr. Hadaway!!! I have been coming here for 5 years now! It is not just Dr. Hadaway (who is now part retired) but the whole office is fantastic! I love Debbie the dental hygienist. I hate getting my teeth cleaned, it is normally sooo painful, but not with Debbie. She is also really fun to talk to. Once we were discussing sewing machine of all things and I was asking her what model hers was, she couldn't remember so afterwards she went home, took a picture of it and sent it in a letter to my house! Wow! The Dental Assistants are great also! They are always kidding and joking with Dr. Hadaway as they work, he is in an office surrounded by women so they kinda pick on him, but it is funny! Dr. Hadaway is not semi-retired. I was sooooo nervous when they brought in a new dentist to help with his paitient load, but it turns out that I love Dr. Vaida Avery as well! She is really nice and always has cute shoes!!! The best part is both Dr. Hadaway and Dr. Avery are really good at giving novicane shots so that it doesn't hurt. I can't even feel it sometimes! I no longer live near PB, but I still drive out here to go to the dentist because they are so fantastic and I never want to change! read more

I already had a very good dentist in Grossmont, but was looking for something closer to home (PB). My colleague Vince recommended Dr. Avery, and I trusted his opinion so I gave her a try. Dr. Avery is very professional and thorough, and her colleagues perform precise digital X-Rays (which have only a very small percentage of the radiation of traditional X-Rays). Her hygenist, whose name escapes me at the moment, was also professional and did a great job. Then again, not to toot my own horn, but I brush and floss on the daily so I am normally a model patient. Apparently they now have a pediatric dental service at the same location, so I plan to take my 2 year-old daughter sometime soon! read more

Wow! I had my second appointment with Dr. Avery's office yesterday and I'm blown away by the experience! In a good way, of course (never thought I'd say that about a dental office)!
