I made the mistake of going in without detangling. In my defense, the last time I had cornrows was probably 2008, when the braiders still washed and blow dried in shop. My braids only take an hour I've gone through really horrible hair treatments and breakage and hair loss and have lost a lot of confidence at times due to my hair's fragile state. Well, I gave Val's another try and I am happy to say I noticed a complete 360 on the customer service. The braider, Rebecca was very professional, greeted me when I entered the business, not to mention she was on time. Her station was ready and so was she. She was pleasant, hands were super light, I could believe she was twisting my hair. She kept checking on me asking if I was ok or I needed a break, THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE. Not only did she provide excellent customer service she twisted my hair the way I like twist from the scalp not starting with a braid then then start twisting, she has the technique down. Omg, she dipped my hair several times until it laid down nicely, then place the hot towel on my head, I thought I had went to heaven, lol, I didn't want her to stop, that just did it for me. She's the only person that can touch my head from now on. I took care of her with a healthy tip, you do not get this service at the salon anymore. I don't know about you but I've been experiencing poor service, mediocre braiding and Luke warm water for dipping, I always have to go home and dip it again, for the price it cost to get your hair braided this should not be happening. I have worn braids off and on for 20 years. During that time I've learned a few things--1. When getting your hair braided--clear the entire day. 2. It is okay to be firm and direct. 3. Know your stylists speciality-- and it is okay to ask before your appointment Now my review of Val's African Braids. Val and her team do amazing work. Have I had to wait before, yes--but have I been late to a braid appointment before-yes! As women, once we sit in that braiding chair, the stylist looks at our hair and may make slight changes based on our head shape, scalp, hair thickness, etc. We may tell Val we want individuals, only to change to twists. I say all of that to say, when getting braids--treat it as an all day event (after all its cultural and its your hair!) If you finish early-- hooray! If not- no love lost. 2. It is okay to be firm and direct. Don't like something in the first 20 minutes of the braid process? Don't want your baby hair/edges gripped? -- speak up then while the stylist can change. It is okay to repeat yourself. After working often without taking a break, your braider WANTS you to like your hair. So don't be afraid to be direct (yet professional) when you get to the shop. 3. It is okay to ask your shop owner "who does the best twists or individuals? Who can slay feed-ins? When I walk into Val's I know their Senegalese twist game is on deck! I ask about the hair color before I get there...and guess what? I am never disappointed! I recently rolled through and Bee and Mona hooked a sista up with small twists! So I tried to give them another chance Wednesday, November 27th, 2019. I will not longer recommend or go to Val's Braiding. Me and my mother we to go get our hair done. I made two appts one week prior. I was told $160 and up even after I sent the pictures. Like previous post NO solid pricing. When we drove from L.A. to Upland (an hour and 15 mins drive) we still had to wait another 15-20 mins for ppl to start. When I made my appt. I requested the previous person who had done my hair and was told that she was a go to braid my hair but of course when i got there she was starting someone else! That was flag number one! So they gave me to someone else, whom i did not particularly care for because her attitude when braiding other ppl hair in the past was just nasty. She starts my hair and my mom is still waiting (I assume for someone to come in) a girl comes in closer to 8:45 am and she sits in the back for another 15 mins before she even starts my moms hair. She acted like she was NOT there to braid. I showed her a pic that my mom wanted BEFORE she started (which was a shoulder length bob) shE still braided past the shoulder and then when she finally got to the top she was doing cornrows and acted as if she never seen the picture of the bob! Red Flag #2! Now I have had my hair braided multiple times, from Box braids to Senegalese Twist and NEVER have i had this much hair tightening on my scalp or bumps appear all around my edges! This braider did NOT seem to care about the my EDGES or scalp for that matter. If I am going to pay upwards of $180 for Box Braids they need to be done correctly and the same width all he way down. These appear to be thicker on top and then at the halfway mark! I am done! I have sent over 8 ppl this is place in the last 4 years NEVER again. I'll stick to Image of Africa Braiding here on out! The reason for the 1 star is mainly for the owner Val and her unprofessional attitude. I went in for braids that she helped another braider do.. her section began to slip out within a day or two. I immediately called to ask when i could come back. She had excuses as to why I had to wait. Then when I finally got in to see her, she had a funky attitude and still made excuses for her work not being done right. I am a stylist so one day between braiding my hair Ester have me her card and I noticed she did senegalese twist from her card. A few weeks later I ran into a woman who had twist and I asked her who did it and to my surprise it was Ester. Then while talking to my client she mentioned Ester as well so I figured I would give her a call! Being that I wanted small sized long twist I knew I was going to pay a Lil money but the price was very affordable. She told me to confirm my appointment which made me a little leary but none the less she and the girls were there and waiting for me as I arrived about 15-20 minutes early. I brought snacks, blankets and everything I needed just because I figured it would be a long day but it really wasn't because at one time there were 4 people twisting so I loved that. QUICK BRAIDS! These ladies only had me in the chair for four hours! The shop had two stylists available to twist my hair into box senegalese twists. I didn't have to purchase my own hair because they had a wide selection of different colors. However, if you want something specific I suggest you bring in your own hair (multi-colored hair, ombre hair, etc.) I called the day before, and they were able to fit me in immediately. read more
