Words can't describe how pleased I was with Val des Rosacées.
I am very seriously over the massive cabanes you find accommodating hundreds of diners at once- something about it makes me feel like cattle.
It had been years that I had been seeking out the traditional cabane à sucre experience: one single room (relatively small), visible access to kitchen, a grandmother cooking up a storm in the back, mismatched plates and cutlery, and good food. They're also BYOB which is the way it should be.
And oh man was the food good. While there was no tourtière I'm willing to forgive it given how wonderful everything else (soupe au pois, ham, oreilles de crisse, patates, beans, etc.) was. The oreilles de crisse were the best my French Canadian mother says she's had in decades, which is saying something. Also, I must say, the coffee is exceptional (and bottomless) here.
Here's the thing that steals the show: THEY VEGANIZE THE WHOLE THING. For real, people! They even make their own fake ham and maple syrup sausages. Wow. Just wow. read more
