I wish I had a room for dessert. We came for the Quiche Lorraine, and the portion was huge -- probably enough for 3 people, I would say. It had a lot of meat, with some kind of special ham/bacon, and the flavor was delicious. If you like meat, this is the dish for you. I definitely recommend it! I absolutely loved their desserts. I will say though, they are pretty expensive. the pear dessert alone was $15 before tax. We got the pear dessert, lemon meringue, and Ferrero chocolate cake, and together the three desserts came to around $45. Honestly, I didn't want to like them as much as I did because of the price, but they were all so good that we immediately wanted more. The pear dessert was light and delicate, while the outer white chocolate layer added a really nice crunch. I was super happy to see them because they were viral on TikTok lol. The Ferrero chocolate cake was super creamy and rich, and even the base had that delicious Ferrero flavor throughout. The lemon meringue was also light and refreshing, while the bottom crust still had a nice firmness to it in a good way. Every dessert was super flavorful and tasted amazing. I had a great experience at Duc de Lorraine in Montreal. I ordered the beef tartare and mentioned that I'm gluten sensitive, and they were very accommodating, swapping out the bread for radishes and cucumbers without any issue. Come with more time than you think. Duc de Lorraine is a beautiful restaurant that features a wrapping terrace for dining that is popular amongst locals and tourists alike. When the sun is shining, I recommend one of their delicious drinks and pending desire, their meals are great, but the desserts are better. Even popping in for a little treat appears to be a quite popular trend. Their macaroons are delicious, every single flavor, and paired with my Espesso Martini nicely. Though there is a lot of waitstaff working, be prepared to spend a lengthy bit of time here. This is likely a combo of the classic culture of enjoying the weather and atmosphere, but also due to what appeared to be miscommunication between the staff. Several people around us requests their bills multiple times, a couple tables got quite irritated. Stopped by here for a weekend break to initially just grab some pastries but last minute to grab a table which they had. Service was overall friendly with frequent check ins to make sure our cups of water were being filled. We ordered a crepe to share and two iced coffees. The crepe was good but definitely also quite pricey. The iced coffee also was stronger than I'm used to so something to note for the caffeine sensitive. Generally speaking, the things we ordered were good. The place itself is pretty with lots of natural light coming in through the dining area. The front has the pasties with lots of cute treats. The higher price makes me lean closer to 3.5 but the ambiance and service makes me feel that rounding up makes sense. read more

Located a few blocks of St Joseph's Oratory, this patisserie was an eye opening stop. The bistro tables were full and there was a short wait to order at the bakery and coffee counter. I've heard great things, so I wanted to give it a try, and went on a Sunday afternoon. I planned to get some kind of sweet croissant and a lemonade, but both the viennoiseries (croissants etc) and the beverages were priced at $11, which is about twice that of the average high quality bakery in Montreal, so I blew my whole budget on an $11 strawberry croissant . Unfortunately, the croissant was disappointing. The pastry was beautifully flaky, but the pastry was dry, almost as if it was a day old. The croissant itself was also flavorless, with no noticeable flavor of butter or yeast. The filling was a strawberry jam. It was good, but not better than a high quality local or French jam. The jam was all concentrated in the middle third of the croissant, and it was spilling out of the hole where the filling had been piped in. It got all over my hands, and since there were no napkins available with my to-go order, I had to try and wipe my sticky hands on the bag they gave me the croissant in (you would think that, for $11, they could afford to give out a napkin with every order). I'm being very critical, but it wasn't altogether bad. If I were a tourist coming from a place where French patisseries aren't ubiquitous, I would have enjoyed it, even though the viennoiseries are wildly expensive. But this is Montreal, and I've had far superior viennoiseries for half the price. read more

When in Montreal, I was excited to have a European style cafe experience and Duc de Lorraine definitely embodied that energy! My friends and I were seated at outdoor tables with many plants / French flags around, since it was quite pricy, we got a few items to share. Two pastries -- the strawberry mille-feuille (~$13) which had a lovely custard in between and deliciously sweet strawberries (seriously I wasn't sure where these strawberries came from but they were utterly perfect), unfortunately the crème brûlée beignet was quite hard to eat as the crystallized sugar on top stuck to your teeth a bit, it was also unlike the beignets I was used to which would be the powdered sugar donut kind. The beignet was filled with the same custard as the mille-feuille but I felt that it worked better with the strawberries. Lastly, the item that surprisingly blew me away was the Mochaccino (~$11), it had the best sweetness and creaminess that I could've imagine and I would genuinely come back just to have it again! read more

Come here for the Benedictines and the tartares but avoid the rest of it for breakfast (you've been warned). The pastries are also some somewhat decent.. but their service is impeccable (as it should be for $50 a breakfast dish). It's a nice, fun breakfast place to chill at and enjoy the view. I'm taking a star off for their awful rest of the menu, and the fact that with birthdays and celebrations, they turn up the music to ear splitting level and it's not only jarring, it interrupts the flow of your conversation (you legit cannot hear the other person) and is annoying AF. I don't know where they came up with this new thing but it needs to stop because people aren't here for the bar-like atmosphere. They're here to have a fun, lively, calm brunch not to be at a rave. Service is poor. After a visit to St. Joseph 's Observatory, we found this place on the way back. It has a nice outdoor dining patio. The young ladies who seated us were fine but the waiters not so. They took our orders of a baguette with ham and French onion soup and proceeded to ignore us. The second waiter came by after a long wait for the food and asked if we wanted water and didn't clarify what kind of water. He shows up with sparkling water which we didn't ask for. After correcting him, a long time passed while we ate our food. No water. Eventually he showed up with a glass bottle and tap water in it after another really long wait. The ham cheese baguette was overly smothered with cheese. Way too much cheese. The onion soup was OK but had a really thick layer of cheese on top. Too much cheese again. Lunch cost over $50 just for the 2 items. To add insult to poor service, the first waiter who took our order didn't bother to thank us for patronizing their restaurant. Not planning to dine here again. High prices, poor service doesn't warrant the visit for us. We've been treated better at less pricey places. read more

Our group of six family members jumped off the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus to see the Saint Joseph's Oratory, a beautiful cathedral on the hill. Facing us across a cheerful, chair filled shaded parklet, was a charming restaurant, Duc de Lorraine. We took a chance, sat outdoors in the warm wafting breeze, we charmed by our cheerful waitstaff, and romanced by our delicious dishes. My slice of quiche was generous and the crust divine. After sharing forkfuls of each other's great selection, we were full. BUT, they had awesome deserts. So we dived in, got eclairs, and other sinful delights. We were there for at least two hours. I'll never forget it. Sugar-highed and satisfied, we braved the many steps up to Saint Joseph's Oratory. At the top is a winding trail leading to a glorious fountain of forgiveness, or fountain of inspiration, or something. That walk was so beautiful and rewarding. I ordered the crêpes aux fruits rouges and split with my brother while my parents split the avocado and salmon toast. The meals were big enough for two people, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food.
