I tried 2 "neighborhood" places, both great failures then...opted to drive from the beach for Mairena @Taboo when a woman came in to my work place with an outstanding haircut AND color, "who colored your hair?" So here's my praise review: Mairena is the best colorist I have ever used in my life! She is precision not only in the nature and life of your color but in the details that make up an end result you are proud of; my hair looked healthy and shiny, caught the sun, made me feel good. I even received compliments. Two weeks later, at the last minute, the night before I was to travel to an important meeting, I decided a fresh, professional blow dry would make a better impression and this top dog male stylist across the street from my work said afterwards, "whoever did your color does fabulous work. I've got to give credit when I see work like this." So this is my thank you to Mairena at Taboo. (And the woman's precision, gorgeous Tilda Swinton-ish cut was done by Gill (pronounced Jill!)) So at this moment I was a loyal client and would go to her in the future. Now some things slipped through the cracks while making my appointment. A couple months back I was ready to make a change and reach out a couple of time via phone and in person and the lack of communication failed. No biggie, I wanted to get my hair done here and nowhere else. Thought third time would be the charm so I stopped in person again and saw the owner Lidia. I mentioned that I was ready for a change and discussed what I wanted, I also asked for her colleague because even tho I had paid for a senior stylist her assistant at the time helped me ol half of the time. Again I did not say anything even after being hosed down during our first session. Decided to let it go. Well I indeed asked if she was available since I knew her as well and knew her prices were slightly different. However I was advised that they were actually the same. They did advise me they had someone knew with lower prices if I were interested. I was happy they were expanding but as I mentioned I was loyal to the person who already doing my hair. I had built a relationship and I was satisfied with the work being done. I requested to be booked with Lidia for my service. Now I know she's not there all the time so we can to coordinate a date where she was here on a weekend. I even requested a quote just so I would have an idea. Done! And received a confirmation. I had to reschedule and booked out for a month later. However the day before my services I received an email and saw a name I did not recognize. So I decided to text and confirm. I was advised that it was not with the owner but with a junior stylist because I had requested someone with lower prices. I was confused because I never asked, I was informed but because I didn't know her I was not comfortable moving forward with her. I then began receiving messages that if I didn't show then I would be charged, oh and the owner was not there so she wouldn't be the one doing my hair. I would however have the person (whom I don't know) do my hair because I "requested them". I tend to be clear, I don't know where the miscommunication came from. I've even received an original email that I was booked with the owner. I requested a call because I know I would never book with someone that I'm not comfortable and now have to be stuck in with. A lot of back and worth which wasn't leading anywhere. Neither of us felt that we were in the wrong, I was told I can book with the owner when she is in but at this moment I felt so uncomfortable and would be so awkward that I'd rather lose business with. I felt there was no accountability taken and I was convinced that I would be charged if I didn't show up with my appointment with someone I did not book.

The next morning, I received a text asking if I could come in much earlier due to a scheduling change. As a hairstylist myself, I knew exactly what was happening. Someone had canceled, and they were trying to fill a gap in the stylist's schedule. No problem. I rearranged my own day, moved a call, and made it work. What I don't understand is why I was then left waiting for about 20 minutes after I arrived. If you're asking clients to change their schedules to accommodate yours, shouldn't their time be respected too? That immediately put a bad taste in my mouth, especially after learning the reason for the schedule change was a cancellation. I went out of my way to help avoid a gap in the stylist's day, only to end up sitting there waiting anyway. The salon itself is beautiful, and the owner was very nice. However, during the shampoo service, the towels smelled strongly of mildew. Every time one was used, that's all I could smell. As for the haircut, it was fine. Not terrible. Not amazing. Just very mid. For a salon charging well over $200 for a haircut, I expected something that felt a little more special. The weirdest part was checkout. When I went to pay, they told me they weren't charging me because it was "just a trim." I still left a $100 tip, but honestly, it felt less like a complimentary service and more like they knew the experience hadn't gone particularly well. I was also given a candle, which was a nice gesture, but it didn't really change the overall experience. At the end of the day, if you're charging luxury prices, people expect a luxury experience. Between being asked to rearrange my schedule, waiting 20 minutes after doing so, the mildew smelling towels, and a haircut that was ultimately just okay, I don't think the experience matched the price point. Manage your expectations and be prepared to wait, even if the salon asks you to change your appointment time to accommodate them.

I am extremely disappointed with the haircut my wife received from Julie…read more Before the appointment, Julie was shown clear reference photographs of my wife herself wearing the haircut she wanted replicated. These were not inspiration photographs of another model with different hair. They showed a previous haircut on my wife's own hair: a precise, full bob with a continuous perimeter, maintaining its weight around the sides and becoming longer toward the front. Despite having that very clear reference, Julie cut a substantial section of hair above one ear dramatically shorter than the surrounding hair, leaving a visible horizontal shelf and removing the continuous perimeter that was fundamental to the haircut. This isn't simply a case of the finished style looking somewhat different from the reference or us changing our minds about a haircut. A section of hair has been cut away that cannot now be restored. We are having to consult corrective haircut and extension specialists to determine whether the missing section can be disguised without sacrificing considerably more of my wife's hair. What makes this particularly upsetting is that the photographs Julie was given demonstrate that this exact haircut had already been successfully achieved on my wife's own hair. Hair will eventually grow back, but that will take months. In the meantime, my wife is left dealing with a completely avoidable problem and the expense and stress of trying to correct it. I am including photographs of my wife's previous haircut that Julie was asked to replicate, together with photographs of the haircut she received, so prospective clients can judge the result for themselves. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I cannot recommend Julie for a precision bob.
