We went into Valalan's to do some engagement ring browsing. The lady and I had been to a few spots just to check things out and learn the ropes. I'll start by saying that some of the other "name brand" jewelers were terrible experiences. Everywhere we went, I made it very clear that we were there to learn. The name brand joints only cared about the sale. They pushed unsatisfactory diamonds on us and immediately wanted to talk financing. But this isn't about them. This review is about the great experience at Valalan's. Allie made us feel like family from the moment we walked through the door. She taught us everything there was to know and showed us different quality diamonds side by side (something other stores were unwilling to do). I can honestly say that the experience was FUN. And this is coming from the guy who used to get anxious over the thought of marriage. Not only was it fun, we both fell in love with one particular diamond. Even with our clear admiration for THE diamond, Allie did not pressure me AT ALL. After learning and browsing with my lady, I called Allie several days later and asked her to make the ring. I told her exactly what we wanted. She gave some expert suggestions to which I agreed and we had the ring made. 2 weeks later, I picked up the ring. It is absolutely perfect. No longer is it necessary to go into the diamond district in downtown, the ridiculously priced high end stores in Beverly Hills or be one of the herd in buying the piece of the moment from a commercial store that does a lot of advertising. I had been searching for months for a jeweler who would work with me to turn a sad incident into a success story when I finally came across Valalan's Jewelers. My husbands father had passed a couple years back and in memory of him , his mother so graciously gave us his fathers wedding ring to wear after our wedding day. Sadly my husband lost his ring in a boating incident and was devastated. When I found Valalan's Jewelers I was looking for someone to work with me in turning some scrap memorabilia into a wedding band and Valalan's jewelers was the only ones who took me in as family and really felt the meaning of my husbands story. Allie is absolutely wonderful to work with! Like all the other great reviews, I have similar glowing things to say. I came in with my grandmother and great grandmother's rings and she helped take out the diamonds and custom design an amazingly gorgeous setting for them using the metal from the old rings as well. She is very knowledgeable and a wonderfully caring and thoughtful listener who definitely pays attention to the details. She was always easy to get in touch with, although I think it's best to make appointments for convenience's sake. Their shop is located in the Torrance Town Center, right near Kohl's with lots of easy and convenient parking. I should have my fiance write a review since he worked with her more than I did to design the ring, but I knew from our first visit that this is where I wanted to come to get our wedding rings made. I told him and Allie the style that I liked and what I wanted, but left the rest of the design up to him. Allie had a preliminary (wax?) mold cast for the ring and showed it to my fiance. I think they discussed it more and he sent over several pictures of different hand engraving and she came up with a lovely final product. The diamond was low set in a framework of scrolling with milgrain hand engraving (don't quote me on that, but I think that's what it's called). I don't use yelp much and I'm not sure how to attach a picture, but I'll try to add one for reference. What I loved best was how she went over describing the different qualities of my grandmother's diamond. The type, clarity, and even had us look at any flaws that were there and discussed how they could be addressed. I love that this is a family run business, passing down a love for beautiful, quality jewelry from generation to generation. I've worked with a few other custom jewelers and Allie is my number one favorite by far! On top of all that, I should probably also mention that this project was much less expensive than I'd anticipated. Excellent quality and great price! I was expecting the purchase of an engagement ring to be one of the most difficult decisions I'd ever have to make. From the four C's, around the girdles, through the sizes, out to the settings, there are so many damn variables and geometric percentages to comprehend all at once it just makes you want to pull your hair out. Not to mention, the final product has to surmount all preconceived expectations that your girl-friend would ever admit to. Trust me guys, when she says it should be round that doesn't give the green light to a Cohiba wrapper. Luckily I found Alice! And I'm not talking about my Fiancée... I'm talking about my Jeweler. Alice basically polished and refined, what I thought would have been a very scary task, the process of understanding diamonds. Alice will leave you with the overwhelming sense that even you can be a professional gemologist, or at least play one on TV. Speaking of TV or should I say Reality TV...? Rumor has it Alice and her Jewelry store Valalans will be featured and aired this Fall, but you didn't hear this tidbit from me.... I was on the hunt for a jeweler who could construct a custom made ring for me, at a reasonable price, and not just try to get me to settle for something which wasn't perfect. I received a negative vibe from several other jewelers, but Alice was more than accommodating and ready for the challenge. Alice worked with me on the design, what was possible with the design and really listened to what I was trying to achieve. She paid attention to detail and delivered a magnificent ring which appears delicate, and feminine with unprecedented craftsmanship. Additionally she really took her time in helping to select a stone, and didn't just bring out a selection from the back stock as if to say "this is what I have for you - first time customer". She really put forth the extra effort after receiving stones on three separate occasions and helping me select the best one in my budget. Furthermore each member of the staff was so friendly, and so willing to work around my schedule. Go ahead, read that line again... I'll wait. When was the last time that has happened?! Alice, Bob and Anita all provided outstanding customer service through the whole process. The ring came out perfectly, I couldn't have dreamed for a better reaction when it was presented, or all the compliments I have received for designing such a wonderful piece of jewelry. Walked in here to see if they could fix a necklace that I had broken. The old lady at the desk was yelling at someone on her phone and looked up at me just to see what I needed. She quoted me a price that was double what I got quoted for across the street after I left her shop. She practically laughed at me for the small piece of inexpensive jewelry I brought in to get fixed, but for me it's sentimental. So I wanted it fixed. I'm sure she's not the only person that works there but she was the only one there when I walked in and she was RUDE. Allow me to explain: I went to Valalans with my (now) fiancée looking for a setting that would turn the diamond I had previously acquired (after much research) into the perfect engagement ring. Like many guys, I had focused my attention on the diamond itself, and was woefully ignorant when it came to settings. I didn't even know what styles or options were available, much less what was popular or what I could afford. The only thing I did know was that I needed help, and man I got lucky. I introduced myself to the saleswoman, Alice, and told her my situation. I could tell from her reaction I had come to the right place. They had a wide variety of settings. Alice explained the options and after talking with my fiancée for a few minutes there were vigorous nods of agreement between them. I listened in on the two of them, but basically got a free pass to sit back and relax. Everything was under control. They didn't have the right combination of features on a setting on display, but no problem, they would custom make one for me and Alice would be in touch. After that day, we exchanged a few emails as she designed the ring. I was most surprised by the fact that she didn't just try to sell me on the most expensive features. She gave me options to keep everything within my price range and even talked me into white gold when I went in expecting to get platinum. Apparently, white gold is harder and holds the stone better. Shows you what I knew. Anyway, the ring is P-E-R-F-E-C-T. It's *exactly* what my fiancée had been dreaming of, and I ended up spending *less* than I had been expecting.
