If you have not tried Valentine coffee, you must really try it. I discovered it at the Tosa farmer market two years ago. These people are so passionate about coffee it is awesome. You can really taste the love in everything they do. This location is mainly designed for roasting the coffee beans. They recently opened up a coffee bar. I would say there are about 10 tables inside and six tables outside. They also offered pastry from blues egg. If you love coffee, you need to stop in. There are no froufrou coffee drinks here. Valentine's in a somewhat "up and coming"/mostly residential area just outside 'Tosa called Washington Heights, and while we all know "up and coming" neighborhoods may take years to actualize to their fullest potential (because Milwaukee), it's businesses like Valentine that drive and expedite that process. Much like Kelly R and Joanna T, I appreciate the well-lit, minimal/sparse and clean interior. I also appreciate the coffee. Simply put, it's good. Thoughtfully sourced and roasted, it's approachable enough for the novice/casual drinker and nuanced enough for the Epicurean-focused nerd. I dig. I'm a pour-overer-at-homer myself so I also dig their being like-minded on the execution tip. I love that you get all the flavor without the viscosity from a pour over. It's immersion and that makes sense to me, especially if you're starting with a quality product. Bottom line: solid, drinkable coffee, folks who appreciate the craft, homegrown small business. As far as local coffee shops/roasters go, this is definitely in my top. Good coffee is most definitely a must, but among those who serve me a great pourover just the way I like it, Valentine has a certain charm that makes the experience extra pleasant. Let's start with VARIETY. I've never seen such a big selection anywhere. There is a wide range of flavor profiles that's sure to please anyone. And it's almost hard to believe it's all fresh! I had the costa rica and liked it enough to buy a lb to take home. Which brings me to ... AFFORDABILITY. $3 for a 16oz brew. I was worried when it said "$3 and up" on the menu, but I was relieved it wasn't a $9 cup of coffee like certain shops in Chicago like to charge for their super "exclusive" coffees... psh. TIP: If you buy bulk coffee for home, you get a free cup of coffee. Or they give you a discount! Yay. Also, the ENVIRONMENT is super productive. Simple decor with bright windows. It might have been the rainy day, but the space was not ridiculously crowded and loud so I was actually able to sit and get work done. Lastly, the staff is so FRIENDLY. And unpretentious. That's pretty rare in larger shops that have established their reputation (ahem Colectivo, Intelligentsia - sorry. Love their beans, sometimes can't stand the staff and clientele), but small roasters tend to be much more down to earth while delivering a product that's just as good, if not better. So aside from beans and brew that's most definitely on par with any big business, Valentine's neighborhood charm and simplicity makes it all the more appealing. The only thing I didn't like was that our 16oz drinks were in glasses instead of mugs that could've held heat a bit better, not to mention feel better in our hands. Valentine makes my favorite coffee in Milwaukee. They have brewed coffee but offer pourovers of all other coffees. The staff are exceptionally friendly. They have snacks, too, including a couple gluten free options. Otherwise there are muffins and some baked goods from local bakeries. The Vliet location is small but nice, and is open a bit later with beer and wine offerings. The Oak Creek location is much bigger and has a lot of seating and great light for working remotely. I just wish they were open later for late night study sessions! read more

The BEST coffee in Milwaukee! Their cortado and dark chocolate sea salt mocha are amazing! The staff is always very friendly and hipster. This location is pretty small (about five tables), usually busy, and has a warm, rustic vibe. Even though it's busy, I always get my drink quickly. Great coffee...I had had some samples of the Bering sea blend at a charity walk and was in the neighborhood and curious to check out the real deal. The coffee at $2-3 was very reasonably priced and the building itself is all clean lines with hardwood floors and metal. I had the bali blend which although described bold was super smooth tasting, without a lot of the backend "bite" you get from some coffees. The staff was really friendly and engaging (even to me who was all sweaty and messy looking from the gym.) What appeared to be several neighborhood regulars came in and it was clear the staff was on a first name basis with them and their families. I'm not over this way too often but it seems like a great neighborhood addition. read more

Delightful. If I had to only use one word to describe this place, it would be delightful. I love the vibe Valentines emits with their massive windows inviting all of the natural light in. Then it's easy to get distracted with all of the roast options they have. The barista was so kind in helping me select a good roast according to my preferences (and there were many options). The fact that they don't serve drip coffee excited me knowing my coffee will be fresh. I don't make pour over coffee myself at home, so it feels like a treat to have someone put that extra care into my coffee for me. This coffee roastery and tasting room is a nice addition to the Washington Heights/Vliet Street neighborhood. We've enjoyed Valentine Coffee at the Wauwatosa Farmers Market and now can enjoy it throughout the year. I am not a coffee expert, but I do really like the coffee choices Valentine offers. It takes a little bit of extra time for a cup because of the pour over technique, but it is worth it. I also prefer iced coffee in the summer and they have always impressed me with great flavor and it is never bitter. The service at both the cafe and the Tosa Farmer's Market is great - you can definitely see the guys have a passion for coffee and the people at the cafe are always willing to help you pick the right coffee for the moment...or beans to take home. They are both knowledgeable and friendly. There are a few snack offerings at the cafe as well. I recommend the bourbon bacon cookies along with your coffee. The roastery is in a former dry cleaners and is quite spacious with the roasting equipment taking up a good portion of it. The rest is the coffee counter and cafe tables. Very clean, fresh and modern. It is a nice place to sit and have a coffee while the sun shines in through the large south facing windows. read more

That being said, I was visiting my mom and childhood home and as it happened, there wasn't coffee or coffeemate because A.) I asked him right off the bat, "What would you recommend to someone who likes coffee but wants it to be sweet?" That's when I found out about the Ethiopian coffee. "You don't have to add sure and it tastes like blueberries."So I paid him and went back to my moms and Holy Michael Jackson, it was freaking delicious. First sip was coffee with a burst of blueberries. And then I messed it up by saying to myself, "Let me add my coffeemate to see what's it'll taste like." Terrible decision on my part. Because the beauty of their coffee was beaten up by the horrid sugary flavor of my coffeemate. I gagged as I realized my mistake. Tldr crowd; Order their Ethiopian coffee. Don't put sugar in it. I got a dark roast coffee with an extra shot of espresso and find the coffee to be great. Apparently they have a Roastery in downtown Milwaukee and they've broken into the airport market. They have pretty good coffee. A lot of varieties and options. They usually only have a couple styles they are brewing so you either have to get the daily selection or purchase a bag of grounds from them. We ask for an extra shot everytime and they have forgotten it 5 out of the last 6 times for some reason. read more

The coffee here is fantastic. It's my favorite that we've had in Milwaukee. The only thing that I wasn't a hug fan of was the environment. It's a small shop that I felt was a good grab-and-go spot, but I didn't feel like I wanted to sit and talk for an hour like I do at a lot of shops, and there also wasn't really ideal outdoor seating (3/5 environment). The staff was very friendly, and I enjoyed interacting with them, and the parking was very easy, as there were both options on the street and in their lot. If you're looking to sit and socialize, going on a date, or looking for a good study spot, I'd probably pick somewhere else. Overall, however, I gave them 5 stars because the coffee was absolutely delicious and the people were great, and I'd highly recommend getting the coffee if you're not wanting to sit and sip it there! read more

You get a free cup of coffee with a 2lb bag. I like the bearing sea blend and the brazil coffee. Service is always good and attentive unlike other coffee conglomerates that rhyme with tarsucks. Everyone working here was extremely friendly, we asked for help picking out coffee beans for my sister and were given good suggestions. We then ordered our drinks, an iced americano with oat milk for me and a cold brew with vanilla syrup and oat milk for J. While we were at the register, the guy who was helping us out asked how our day was going and what we were up to for the weekend. We told him we were from Chicago and I was searching for boutiques so he asked the barista for suggestions and she wrote down some names. They went above and beyond to be kind and helpful and I really appreciated that! Also, the drinks were delicious. My iced Americano was nice and strong and you could taste the espresso. J said he liked his cold brew so I'll take his word for it! My sister just tried the beans we bought her and she said they were good so that's also good to know! The staff is great, the atmosphere is good. The coffee stands up to the rest of the local cafes, and they seem to do a lot of local sourcing. I never have issues parking at this location and the line is never long, so I can be in and out in 5 min. My only criticism is the cups. Not because they're bad cups. They're actually the best cups around. They have a double layer of cardboard for built in insulation and a lid that swivels closed. But I don't need fancy cups for my fancy coffee. It gives me the false sense that I can take my time sipping my morning drink, because it isn't actively scalding my hand as it transfers all of its heat energy into flesh, becoming lukewarm and periodically splashing me after each pothole as I make my way north on 60th street. I need a cup that reminds me I'm alive. read more

Great coffee with serious flavor. You won't get the burnt/liqueur-like roast like some of those national chains that will remain unnamed. Rather, each roast has its own distinct flavor. I'm a French press guy who loves a flavorful, acidity, light or medium roast. The Costa Rican blend is outstanding. I won't be obnoxious and give you my coffee tasting notes, but anyone who's been over always enjoys drinking the stuff and will proceed to ask where it's located. Outstanding stuff. I came here on a quick stop now that I have friends living in the area again. I'm amazed again by this little area of the Heights that has so many great little places without a ton of fanfare. Valentine is a great little spot for decent coffee, very friendly staff, and a very intense product (flavors...without the hard, hot roast that Starbucks churns out). One goes to Valentine Coffee Roasters to indulge in the delicacy that is a perfectly crafted cup o' Joe, Ambrosia, Drink of the Gods, Black Gold, Mud, or whatever you call it -- coffee. Yeah, we're talkin' the good stuff. The coffee one drinks after they've removed their vanilla and chocolate coated coffee bean training wheels. For just a few American dollars, you can pick a coffee from a few select growing regions of the world, e.g. Brazil, Bali or Papua New Guinea, and have your beans freshly ground then brewed using the taster-preferred pour over method. While writing this I am enjoying my still steamin' cup of Ethiopian and it is delicious. I'm looking forward to trying the others, but this African bean sets the bar pretty high. WHY DOES A LARGE COFFEE COST MORE PER OUNCE? I love this location and business on so many levels. Doing the Tosa Farmers Market, great store hours, great employees and delicious coffee. I love that when you buy a bag of beans you get a free cup of coffee or $2 toward a drink. The only thing I struggle with is the fact that a person ordering a large coffee pays more per ounce than the person buying a small sized coffee. I instead buy two small coffee's because it is more bang for your buck by a long shot. The sad thing is fewer plastic lids would be wasted if they'd just make the large size's cost per ounce the same, or as most stores do and make it cheaper. Typically the more you spend anywhere the better the deal as you're investing more into them and they in turn reward you for getting so much, not try to charge you more. I've written them on this and got no response, so I thought I would post to give others a heads up if they want to save some $ and buy 3 smalls instead of 2 larges. read more
