Wife and I dropped in for dinner the other night, we were looking for something new and were excited to try out Vallarta after seeing some solid reviews. Staff was extremely friendly and the restaurant was nice and clean. It's a smaller place but little hole in the wall places are sometimes the best. I had the steak enchiladas, they were delicious. The sauce was flavorful, it had plenty of steak and cheese and the rice and beans were very good. My wife really enjoyed her meal as well and the staff checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. This was my best experience in a small restaurant. Doesn't look like much on the outside , but once you go inside and have a taste of what is cooking and being served you will be amazed. Curiosity got the best of me, and I finally gave a shot. First and foremost, great service. Second, they have a bar, so that is always a plus in my books. Salsa has a really good flavor, and it has spice the more you eat. The french fries were cooked perfectly as well as the fish my kindergartener asked for. The location might not be the best, but the inside of this joint speaks for itself. It's fresh and super clean. The food was great, but it gets a 4 from me simply because my mango margarita lacked some sweetness, and although the red sauce on our burritos was not overwhelming, the burrito the flavor wasn't 100%. Went to this place for menudo and menudo was really good. Corn tortillas were home made. and we liked that they give all the fixings for menudo. I know outside the looks of restaurant are questionable but inside looks very nice and clean. Can't wait to go back and try something different. highly recommend for menudo. read more

Don't let the area scare you away! The little hole in the wall are always the best! My family and I have Sunday dinners. This last Sunday no one felt like cooking so I researched and found this place. The inside looks nice and clean. When we arrived there was just a to go order waiting. By the time we left there were 5-6 more tables. I don't believe they get busy because of the area. It's really sad, especially if you are from Bakersfield and have seen this area go from what use to look like the SW to what it looks like today. I'm sorry, but I was not impressed with the food or the service. I'm guessing it was an off night for them. I'm willing to try again, but not anytime soon. Only two girls working and maybe 8 people seated. 2 of those people were waiting for food to go. The music was blaring. To the point we could not hear each other talk. With high ceilings, the music overtook the room. And then they had the tv right behind us playing also. Along with that, there was a small child of one of the employees running around. Too much going on! I felt bad for them at the same time though. It took a bit to get one of the girls back to take our drink order. With that out of the way, we now waited to place our order. After about 15-20mins our orders were placed. I will say, the menu had multiple items to choose from that all looked delicious. I was having trouble deciding. I ordered a shrimp dish that was ok. Shrimp was a little over cooked, but otherwise tasted good. Husband said his meal was "Just ok". Oh!! And those people who were waiting for their food to go, were still sitting there. The place was getting busier and I'd swear one of these girls had to be running back and cooking too. They definitely were not prepared for the amount of people that came in. We got them to turn down the music and turn the tv off. They finally brought in another waitress to help and someone to pick up the kid, as the restaurant was now packed with people. We watched a few tables get up and leave after sitting there for a long time without any interaction from the help. They never once made it back to our table to refill our teas. Even after we set the glasses at the very edge of the table as a clue we would like some more. Owner needs to step it up and recognize how hard his staff works when they are limited. She took the time to explain things to me (I wish I remembered her name ). I got food, a couple of items, my first time trying, and it was very good. Told "no dogs" with a service animal wearing a vest but, later, allowed to stay. Excellent price, fresh ingredients but, slow service and forgot items Ordered a vegetarian burrito with fajitas grilled vegetables. The burrito had lots of grilled veggies but, few beans, no cheese and, no sliced avocado $8. The waitress came back about 20 minutes later. The ice tea was freshly brewed and, large in a glass mug served with a large, slice of lemon for $3. I entered with my service animal wearing his vest and, told "no dogs". The waitress kept attending her table. I sat down. My service animal lied under the table in the booth. On one knew he was there. The waitress came and, I explained that he was a service animal. She served me. I left a card with information regarding the law and, service animals in public places. Something must have burned shortly before I entered, however, the restaurant was clean. My wife and I and another couple tried this restaurant for the first time and were definitely impressed. The service was very good, the food was excellent and the variety of dishes offered was surprisingly large for an establishment of this size. We were supposed to meet friends here for dinner. We walked in ahead of them, and quickly ordered & received waters and chips & salsa. Chips taste homemade. Wife is picky about salsa, and she liked theirs. We made short work of both. We waited for our friends before we ordered. Ten minutes. Twenty minutes. Texted them; no answer. After half an hour, we decided to order anyway, and our very patient server took our order. I liked him immediately; friendly smile, very careful to make sure he got the order correct. And he didn't seem to mind waiting for us to be ready to order. I had two crispy tacos, rice and beans. It was fine, but it wasn't delicious. The carne asada was not all flavorful or juicy. Kinda disappointing. My wife had two vegetarian tacos, one crispy, one soft, with beans replacing the meat. She thoroughly enjoyed those. Next time, I'll try the pupusas! Purchased a couple of Bakersfield Californian daily deal certificates, stopped by on Saturday for lunch, was promptly met by a waiter, he brought chips, salsa, and beer and then took my order. Order came out promptly and it looked good. I never heard back from the guy, didn't even bring me my ticket. ordered chicken suizas combo and a bean/cheese pupusa based upon other review, which is currently hidden. The sause on the suizas had great flavor, the beans are average, the rice was unusually white and fluffy for a mexican restaurant, I thought it was actually very good rice. I have never had a pupusa, it was good, but very heavy and filling. The place was actually bigger inside than I had expected. Very good food! The chips were yummy to start off with! We ordered a machaca and egg burrito, 2 pupusas (one revueltas, one bean and cheese) BOTH were delish!! Our bill with tip was $25 and we had more than enough food for the three adults in my party. My hubby got a carnitas torta which good enough but the pupusas were the best!!! I'd highly recommend if you're in the area! I know a lot of soccer teams come to the area because of the huge soccer complex! I'd say you could get a team in their easily! Gotta show some serious love for this place! Located on Columbus, it's sorta hidden inside a very small shopping strip. If you've never tried Salvadorian food, you'll be in for a treat. The restaraunt has room for about 80 patrons, not including the bar stools. The atmosphere is still with some pleasant contemporary spanish music. Has 3 big screen televisions. They serve American, Mexican, and Salvadorian food. Which is always nice if you're not feeling rice and beans, or carne asada. I ordered a Michelada, which tasted great. Missing ice cubes. I'm not sure if that was intentional. The rim was salted and garnished with a thick wedge of lemon and tall celery stick. (Nice!) The chips were crisp along with an amazing fresh salsa complete with chunks of onion, bits of cilantro, etc. My main order, which is merely an appetizer, was two cheese papusas. They came with a Salvadorian cabbage and red sauce. Papusas take about 20 minutes to make, but they are worth it! My takeaway: At $13 for my meal, it was tasty. Definitely will do again. read more

This is in my neighborhood and I wanted it to be a hole in the wall place with great food. I hidden gem of a place. It had been a couple of years so I thought I would try it again. The prices should be a lot lower in a low rent area like that. Especially since they don't seem to buy the best quality ingredients. I had chicken Mole. It was greasy and flavorless. The food had good flavor. I got steak fajitas but I feel as though the steak could have been cut in smaller strips. It was cut too large for my taste. I was the only one there so the food can pretty quickly. This changed though when I was done. They didn't really check on my as they were doing night end chores. Someone else came in and put in an order. They completed their whole order (as in took the order and cooked it) before they came back out and took my payment. I would give them one more try to see how they do on service and try something else in terms of food. I have no doubt it will be tasty. LOVED their salsa too =) read more
