We were over in Latrobe visiting all the Mr. Rogers sites and stopped in to get a banana split and lunch (given the history of Latrobe and banana splits). I got an Italian sandwich with fries and my littles got pancakes. While the sandwich was good, it wasn't great...just meaning, I've had better sandwiches and it wasn't anything to write home about. The fries came out a bit cold and limp. The pancakes were big and my kids really enjoyed them and the banana split was huge and really good! Service was relatively slow, but I understand that many places are short staffed these days and try to have patience. I have more patience than my children haha! I visited Latrobe one day last month to visit Mr. Rogers historic sites as well as learning about the town's status as "the birthplace of the banana split". I asked a few locals where to get the best one and they all said this place. Problem was this was nowhere near downtown, you had to drive on the busy section where all the chains are, in front of Walmart. So I went and had some smothered fries, and for dessert, the banana split. It was well-decorated, and just like how a banana split should be - with an American flag on top. Last week was my first time ever at Valley Dairy. I came here with my family and we were all pleasantly surprised by how good the food and service is! We came for breakfast and all got the pumpkin iced coffee! It was so amazing! I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's even better than Starbucks iced PSL and I absolutely love Starbucks. And only $3.50 with a free refill? You can't beat that! Everything here is pretty affordable, I was able to get eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon and 3 pancakes for like around $10, might've been lower honestly! The food here was so good that we even came back the next day for lunch. I ordered the garden burger with fries and I loved it! A lot of people in my family ordered the pot roast and really enjoyed. Kaylee was our server both days and she did amazing. She is A very kind person! If I'm in the Latrobe area again, I'll definitely be back! read more

Haven't even tried the food yet, sat for 45 minutes with only 4 people at our table and there have been parties of 8-10 that have already gotten their food and payed. We stopped in to pick up a few Reubens to go and I noticed they were having a sale on Ice Cream Quarts so I picked up a Buckeye (peanut butter & chocolate) for us and Pecan Cashew Praline for my MIL. My expectations were not high but that ice cream was a creamy, velvety DELIGHT. It was so delicious. I usually just get breakfast or lunch. This was the first time I had their ice cream. Super yummy! Great service, mediocre food every time. Mashed potatoes were dried in spots as if my portion was scooped up with a crusty top, gravy to heavy and salty. Liver was over cooked and charred hiding under my heavy brown gravy. Salad had two cherry tomatoes and two thin slices of cucumber on lettuce with lots of white core left in the mix. Has the potential of being a good restaurant-location etc-but quality is lacking! No real butter or maple syrup!! Really? They can buy this from restaurant depot in large quantities-just like their imitation maple syrup (corn syrup-which is very unhealthy) and whipped margarine! Ah yes, this is the Valley Dairy that took the place of the one just down the street at the Latrobe 30 strip mall. I have fond memories of that Valley Dairy, eating there after spending a family fun day at Idlewile, while on vacation. For this particular Valley Dairy, which I've been too a few times already, I have to say I'm a fan, just not a big one. The food is serviceable, if not great, their selections are limited in my opinion, but do cover some ground, and the service has been, for the most part, solid if not spectacular. Overall, it's definitely our go-to place for ice cream (when we're wanting something other than soft-serve). My biggest complaint though is when they have a flavor you desire in the cooler but not in the shop - downright irritating when I think of it. Maybe they'll re-think their policy and pull from the cooler when a patron likes something they are offering from there. Just a thought... read more

Came here with some friends who grew up in LaTrobe. They told me the ''Banana split'' originated here so we had to try it. Nothing fancy but three scoops of ice cream on top of a banana with whipped cream and a cherry on top in a silver bowl. Prices appeared average -- nothing outageous. They do have shakes/malts and cakes options (as well as food but didn't try any). read more

In my humble opinion, the Valley Dairy location in Latrobe still remains one of the best places for breakfast, lunch or dinners. The prices are economical, generous portions and they always have something different to try. Their ice cream brand is very good and there a variety of flavors to try. Great service. The menu had a lot of desirable courses. They've really stepped up their game since my last review.

We went to Valley dairy this evening and ordered the bourbon chicken with macaroni and cheese and a Salad. When we received our salads there was a dead bug in mine. Needless to say neither of us wanted our salads. We sent them back and they removed the cost of the Salads from the bill. About a 1/2 hour later a manager stopped by our table and asked if everything was alright. We had already finished our meal. It will be a long time before I return. read more

I went to Valley Dairy with my parents for lunch today. The food as usual was very good. I loved the 1/2 lb bacon cheeseburger with seasoned fries. My mom said her fish sandwich was very good and my dad enjoyed his Belgian waffles with berries. More importantly than the food was how well we were treated. My dad is 86 and moves extremely slowly. The employees were all very patient. They were very kind and understanding towards us. Everyone from the manager to the bus boy to waitresses from other areas were patient with how slow my dad walked. Our waitress Gabbey did a great job. She patiently waited to take our orders. She was quick with drink refills and she removed our dirty dishes promptly. The people who work in this restaurant should be very proud of themselves. Thank you to all of you for your patience and understanding and kindness. It was greatly appreciated. read more

Believe it or not, the birthplace of the banana split was out of bananas. The ancient Manager could have been the one who invented it, spending more time smoking in the back than managing. The food was good, the young server tried hard and was apologetic but this place cries out for competent management. If Denny's or EatnPark were closer they'd be done for. Will not go there again, food was nothing more then frozen food stuck in a microwave. They claim "home cooked style food" but nothing more than what you can get in the frozen section of your local grocer and microwave it yourself. Had the meatloaf sandwich and was equivalent to "stouffers" frozen swiss steak party microwave to a rubbery portion and my next trip was chicken parmigiana and the spaghetti noodles were microwaved to a crisp and stuck together and the chicken was microwaved to a rubbery crisp. When I sent my food back no manager came over to apologize and when I sent an email to corporate they never apologized and advised me, basically what did you expect? Fresh food? No explanation for microwave of food items like that is the norm for them. Would highly "NOT RECOMMEND" this restaurant chain to anyone. read more

will not dine at this place again !!!!! food taste like it was nuked. the only reason we tried this greasy spoon is because we had a coupon and never ate there so we thought we would try it out, big mistake. what they say and actually do are two separate things. i ordered sweet tea then switched to coffee, the server said i would not be charged, guess what? charged for two drinks. argued the extra charge with the manager but made us out to be liars. stating the server never said we wouldn't be charged for the coffee. i didn't appreciate being called a liar. read more
