The highlight is the huge wall of bins filled with all kinds of Swedish candy. You grab a bag, fill it yourself with whatever you want, and then take it to the counter where they weigh your bag and charge you based on the weight. There are so many options that it can be hard to decide what to get! I really wish they would open a location in North County San Diego. Until then, whenever we're in Los Angeles, Sockerbit is definitely one of our stops. If you love Swedish candy--or just enjoy trying something different--this place is definitely worth checking out!

I placed the blue Dogders-themed Sho-mochi back on the shelf, promising I'd return soon with ransom money. I never break a promise. A week later, I walked in with a $10 bill and walked out with $3.50 worth of change shuffling in my back pocket. Shohei and I are skipping town. I took the train to a stop far from covetous eyes. I devoured the 1st mochi street side, liberating smooth white chocolate ganache from its stretchy mochi enclosure. Then I ate another one. Was it worth the two trips and the odd feeling of handling paper bills? Sure, because long before Shohei, I've loved Fugetsu Do. Korey's Chocolate mochi is my all-star, named after the founder's great grandson. Years ago, Korey's dad, Brian Kito, was at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterey Park, demonstrating how to make mochi. He told us he created this treat because his son likes chocolate. I was hooked. I usually buy their confectionery at the local Mitsuwa or Marukai. It's inspiring, though, to see this shop in real life, standing on First St. as the oldest business still operating in Little Tokyo. Shuttered during WWII when the Kito family was incarcerated, it was rebuilt from scratch when they returned with no money or access to their equipment. The founder's son Roy and his wife Kazuko slept at the Buddist temple while he worked as a waiter to save up. With determination and community support, Fugetsu Do reopened for business in 1946. It is now a piece of living history, a testament to human hope and mochi, stretched and pounded, only to come out stronger on the other side.

The oldest confectionery shop makes a variety of mochi and manju daily for about $2 a piece. Unfortunately, they don't make the best gifts as they must be eaten within a couple of days. They also carry some rare candy that can't even be found in Japan anymore. During my last visit, I got a few with strawberry, blueberry and chocolate flavored red bean filling as well as LA Dodgers imprinted pancakes. Chewy goodness! They can get pretty busy during the weekends, but weekdays are a quick in and out process. The staff are patient and helpful in explaining the treats. There's no seating. It's just a grab n go shop.

So I was surprised to find a wide selection of soda pops both soda as singles and cases. They also had alcohol, toys, candies, snacks, a sandwich station, and a custom soda station. We each made two custom sodas with my flavors being watermelon blueberry and coconut rose. My husband used the heavy bubbles option while I opted for the light bubbles option. We were able to write out flavors on the label attached to the bottle and seal our sodas after making them. I was so excited to see they had the Faygo root beer that our friend introduced us too along with five additional flavors available for that brand at the store. I grabbed a vanilla crème Faygo and orange Faygo to try later. Their candy was mostly the old school stuff with the Idaho Spud catching my interest, which turned out to be similar in flavor to the Hostess Snowballs so I'm excited to go back and get more in the future.
