I made the mistake of taking my 15 year old dog for a quality of life check up, and it was her first visit here. We stopped going to the previous vet because they didn't see an obvious bone break on an X-ray (the U of M saw it on the same X-ray) and never seemed to remember anything about our 3 dogs. My oldest dog had been suffering from a collapsing trachea for almost a year and she declined quickly. By the time I made the appt, I had accepted that it was near the end of my pet's life; even though Rilo was still herself between coughing/collapsing episodes. In the last month, she had started to faint/collapse/stroke/seize? after her coughing fits; while urinating a couple times. It's Covid, so animals are taken in w/out the owners and they call you; I hate it. She was in there for 1.5 hrs alone. The vet tells me her heart & lungs sound good, and she has severe trachea collapse. She still eats, drinks, and is interactive so it's not her time to go yet. Vet said she has severe dental disease, and it probably hurts to eat and she may be causing her weakness/falling. She gave us cough suppressants and a piece of paper about home euthanasia, as well as a glimmer of hope that my baby had more time. Lastly, vet says if she falls over and is unconscious for more than a minute, to call the animal hospital. I had gone to appt expecting to be told to end her suffering in the next few days. As I drove out of the parking lot, my dog had a coughing fit and falls over limp and defecated, I thought I lost her right there. I pulled over and called the vet (I was 5 blocks away) and no one answered, so I raced home. She perked up by then and ate and drank, and was never unconscious, just dazed. I still had the vet's words in my head and weeks of cough suppressants-I had false hope we had more time. Rilo got worse the next night; drastically. I called and left a message and no return call. She continued to have coughing/collapsing episodes, and pooped and threw up a couple times and I could tell she was suffering. I should have taken her to ER, but that didn't register with me. I made her comfortable and called for a home euthanasia appt for the next night. 3 hours later she had an episode and stopped breathing. She died within 55 hours of her vet appt, where I was told it wasn't her time yet. I failed her because I didn't end her suffering, because I trusted the word of a vet I had never met, because it didn't register to go to the emergency vet to save her from suffering because I didn't understand her illness and all her end-of-life symptoms. I wasn't prepared to know the signs; I kept focusing on the time between her episodes. She was acting like herself. After her traumatic end, I researched tracheal collapse, quality of life & signs death is near. Rilo checked lots of those boxes, but I wasn't informed on what to look for. There was no transparency of how her disease would kill her or to go to an ER vet for emergency euthanizing. I thought I had more time before the home euthanasia. I had previously accepted she would pass peacefully and she didn't. I have extreme guilt on how the end of my pet's life was. At this point; I feel like I'll never get over it. My mind was in a weird pre-grieving spot, and I didn't get the right guidance and knowledge. I had never dealt with losing a pet firsthand, and I am ashamed I didn't do my own research until it was too late. Maybe if they had answered their phones/returned voicemails, they could have given me guidance. I was in a state of shock about losing her. We rely on doctors to give us all the information to be prepared. She had all the signs of nearing death and the vet missed them all, and I trusted their advice. I'm devastated and I failed my pet in many ways. I can't help but think the vet visit had something to do with this. Before the visit Rilo was collapsing 1-2 times a week. After visit she was passing out every 4 hours while vomiting and pooping. Did they press too hard? How does a vet not realize the collapsing was fainting because of her trachea? Brand new? Incompetent?

I took my pets here for 4 years and was happy with the care they received until this year…read more During this incident, front office staff told me I couldn't speak with a veterinarian if it wasn't the one that I took my cat to recently. Dr. Bush wasn't in that day and I needed help as my cat was very sick after starting a new medication. I begged to talk with any Dr. on staff or have someone call me back before the end of the day. I was told point blank "it probably won't happen, but if they have time then they'll call." I didn't receive a call that day. Next day I was more worried about my cat and was met again with rude front office staff sighing loudly on the phone and interrupting me as I try to explain my situation and asked for Dr Bush. This time my vet was in but now I can't talk with her, but I was told to make an appointment with a tech, no Dr was needed. They wouldn't listen to my cat's situation yet and dismissed me at every opportunity. My cat lost half her body weight, continued to decline and I felt helpless. The next day I received a call from Case Manager Danielle who said she doesn't want to make excuses for how I was treated but went on to list excuses- " We are short staffed this week, Julia just doesn't realize when she's being rude but it's a problem they're working on with her.." I am so disappointed in Shakopee Vet. I have since found a wonderful place to take my aging pets. They took gentle care and concern with me and my pets and immediately found the issue with my cat. If you want supportive customer service and good veterinary care for your aging pets, I'd look elsewhere.

The list is really endless but one of the biggest decisions was who our vet was going to be. We were dog owners before and we were happy with our previous vets but I was interested in searching around. We landed at Shakopee Veterinary Clinic. It wasn't the closest one to our home but the reviews we read were amazing so we were willing to drive a little further. This is an all woman staff including the 3 veterinarians who are all excellent. They are extremely caring, personable, timely with appointments and the techs are outstanding too. Overall I'm extremely pleased. It's easy to set up appointments, call and ask questions too. You'll find some of the best care for your furry animals right here.

I called them to see if I could get a refill if my vet in Georgia faxed in a prescription. They informed me of the price, got all my info and said they could call me when it was ready. Hours later I got a call from them informing me that my vet did not fax it in yet. I called my vet and they said they sent it, overall it was a back and forth game but I finally got my prescription. I was impressed that even though my pup was not a regular patient at this clinic; they reached out to me to let me know they had not gotten the prescription. During my second visit, I brought my dogs in because one of them had worms in their stool. The technician and the vet were so helpful and friendly. They each took their time asking me questions, looking at my dogs and asked me questions about life. They were genuinely concerned about my dogs and interested in me. This was impressive because not only did they care about the health of my dogs but they wanted to get to know me as an individual. The entire staff that I encountered were all friendly and helpful. From the lady I spoke with about the prescription to the lady that checked me out. The prices here for the prescription and both dogs being seen was reasonable. I was expecting it to be much higher. I would highly recommend this clinic. If I have any problems again with my dogs when I'm home in MN, this is where I would bring them. **FYI, there business cards are also discount cards. You can get $20 off your first visit if you give it to them, they are by the registers. I didn't notice this until later after my first visit.

Dr. Sven blends his knowledge with a deep compassion for animals. In my case, Dr. Sven took an extra precautionary test when I brought my cat Scotch in for a dental cleaning. In this test, they found an issue with his heart. If my cat had been put under that day for his teeth cleaning without this test (which not all vets do), he would have likely died under anesthesia. Dr. Sven went the extra mile to ensure the safety of my cat & saved his life. Dr. Sven brought in a special cardiologist to help me diagnose heart disease & get my cat on the meds he needed. It gave me several more beautiful months to love him and to say goodbye. What a gift that I will always treasure. When it was time to say goodbye, their entire team was supportive and kind and provided their services with such grace. They handled my sobs with hugs and understanding. Thank you Betsy and Sabrina. I've brought my dog and cats there for routine care visits & I never feel pressured to purchase unnecessary services or products. They focus on your animal and what they need, not what they don't. This vet office has a small town feel where you will feel like family. I can't really rave enough about them. They don't rush you through and they take time to ask if you have any questions. Connor Dougherty, DVM was the veterinarian I met with at the first visit and it was his demeanor and kindness that made me switch our dogs to this vet. He also did my yorkie's dental procedure (see experience below) and has been wonderful in the aftercare. The front desk receptionist is so kind, professional, and caring as well as all the staff I've interacted with in just a few visits thus far. Detailed Personal Experience: I recently got a 2nd opinion from this vet on my almost 9 year old yorkie's (Ollie) teeth and decided to transfer both of our dogs to this vet. They are so kind and accommodating, give you opportunity to ask questions, don't rush you, and take the time to really explain things and ease your concerns. Ollie had his teeth extraction procedure done on October 5, 2023 and it went well. I was so nervous as this was my first time leaving him at a vet and first time with him having a procedure (his neutering was before I rescued him). They really helped reassure me. They called during the procedure to inform of more necessary extractions and provided updates on how he was doing. When I picked him up, Jenna (Vet Tech) did a wonderful job of explaining aftercare instructions and answering our questions. One of their Vet Techs (I'm sorry I don't know their name) told me how she wrapped my Ollie in a blanket and cuddled him when he was waking up. I had a hard time not tearing up and it makes me emotional as I write this, to know that they cared for my baby in the most compassionate and caring way. I called today with concerns about coughing and they explained it's pretty normal due to intubation during procedure to have some irritation or soreness in the throat for 24-48 hours. They said they were going to call today (Friday) for a check-in and I beat them to it with this call and that they'd reschedule the check-in call for tomorrow (Saturday). So incredibly thankful to Marschall Road Animal Hospital for taking such good care of my Ollie.
