This was only my second time here, but I'm hooked! I even brought my punch card with me. It's a dessert shop that specializes in shave ice/bingsu, but offers milkshakes and Merch. The flavors are crafted after some of our various favorite classic cultural desserts such as MANGONADA, Thai tea, halo-halo, s'mores, PB & chocolate , and even an affogato! The ice is so light and finely, texturally soft having almost an ice cream feel. You can order three different sizes, small, medium or large. While I recommend enjoying your dessert inside, there is an option for take out. The lids work perfectly to contain your shave ice. A large size is sufficient to share between two people. Service was friendly and incredibly fast. My sister and I both ordered a polar affogato each, which wasn't served in a cup of coffee because it would most likely melt the shave ice and you would just end up with coffee. It did have a distinct coffee flavor topped with whipped creme , chocolate sauce and brownie bits, sprinkled with cocoa powder. It checks off all the qualifications for an indulgent coffee, & chocolate dessert lover without the heaviness & richness that can cause sluggishness. While I'm a huge chocolate fan, my sister and I decided on sharing the Mexican candy one. This blew us both away! It tasted like a super good MANGONADA! Topped with chamoy, it was a pleasant hurricane of sweet, savory, spicy and salty. Not to mention the tajin bursting with lime and chiles taking it to a whole other level. It was a fruit haven disco! It sounds odd but the fresh watermelon chunks were so juicy and the perfect balance. While I love chocolate and peanut butter and fruit ( not altogether), usually PB & chocolate is going to win that war. But the mango candy has me rethinking my faves. I haven't had a bad flavor yet! The portion was a bit small for the price (ranges from $6-9) but you can taste the quality of their snow. The man (possibly owner?) who served us was incredibly kind and helpful. When I accidentally dropped some of my toppings on the floor trying to take a picture (-__-) he quickly offered to redo the toppings for me! We visited the Penguin on a weekend after lunch. It was easy to find in a nice shopping center with a large parking lot. When we entered, the staff was nice, but not helpful in a friendly way (Have you been here before? No? Let me tell you about the place and all the options..etc.) The first thing we all noticed was the smell. It was like a really strong, stinky version of Subway cold cuts. Our son disliked it so much, he was willing to forgo the dessert to escape the stench, but he settled for a quick run outside to get fresh air. The menu chalkboard was a LOT to read, especially with an eight-year-old in the group. I did notice as we were leaving that there were pictures to the left of the menu board. I think if we go back, I'll look up the menu online first or check the photos at the store instead. We ordered the small Sweet Tooth: cotton candy snow, graham crackers, marshmallows, whipped cream, and sprinkles. It came out quickly and it was plenty for the three of us to share. However, the medium is only an extra $1 if you need a little more. We were surprised how much it tasted like cotton candy 'snow cream'. We didn't love the graham crackers but it didn't hurt the flavor either. The marshmallows were pretty hard from the cold temps, so we will stay away from them in the future. The whipped cream and sprinkles were great. We were all really interested in knowing how this stuff is made and what exactly we were eating. We read that it is a hybrid between shaved ice and ice cream that originated in Taiwan. It's always fun when things spark our family's curiosity and we learn something new! So glad that we finally have a bingsoo place in the West End! Vampire Penguin has some really creative mixes and great flavors. We ordered nearly every flavor, and I loved them all and will definitely be coming back. The large size is huge though, so be sure you can finish it before you order. My favorites were the Smoreo, The Sweet Tooth, and the Polar Affogato. The Polar Affogato was lighter, but the coffee flavor fits with the vanilla well. The Smoreo and The Sweet Tooth were super sweet, but that's what I like! My first experience of shaved ice was when my girlfriend took me to this Korean Patbingsu shaved ice place in Annandale so many moons ago. This sort of reminded me of that...but smaller in quantity. I was really excited to try this place... we ended up getting it in to go boxes but in hindsight we should've just said we were eating there since that was what we ended up doing. Don't question yourself with getting the small stuff large like we did... it's super light so you will want the large and it is worth the upcharge. My husband and I got the Polar Affrogato ( I seriously could've bathed in it... it was so amazing with an icy /creamy goodness texture) and we got our kids the Oreo ( this one left something to be desired I have a feeling they forgot to add something because the guy making it questioned himself when he was making it and the owner mentioned something. It was a bit like eating shaved ice you get from your fridge with watered down chocolate sauce). At any rate, I would 100% go back and get the Polar Affrogato and something else. read more

We had no idea what to get, but one child ordered a S'moreo and my creative 9yo chose a custom creation, watermelon snow with vanilla wafers (dust) and fruity pebbles. My extra spoon and I really liked them both! I'm still not sure what makes the "snow" taste like a creamy shaved ice, but two thumbs up. The texture is nice, though, and its very light, so you can load on sweet toppings to create a three dimensional taste without killing the flavor with rich and sugar. Snow is really popular in Texas, and something I have been missing here in Virginia. When I heard about this place, especially so close to home, I was thrilled and had to go see for myself. The place is small but very cute and aesthetic. They are allowing indoor seating, which I felt comfortable doing because it was just me and my sister. There's lots of flavors - the choices to combine things or choose a creation. It's different from shaved ice and ice cream, but it's really good! I went for the mango snow with some fruit and condensed milk, and I really enjoyed it. I think there could have been more toppings and condensed milk added, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
