Came here twice in June, and summer only started! Unlike in the winter, this shop is definitely a lot busier when it's warm. There were throngs of customers of varying ages (children, middle-aged people, seniors, etc.) on both a weekday afternoon and evening. I was really surprised. Thankfully, the line moved really quickly. It helps that the staff is very efficient and friendly. Instead of playing it safe, I tried three new things during my recent trips: Strawberry and cream sundae - They had four sundae options, but I went with this flavor because strawberry (duh). It was a nice little treat, but it would've been definitely too much for just one person. They went heavy on the whipped cream, so much so that it took me a while to clear a path to get to the actual ice cream. The ice cream flavor wasn't very memorable, but no complaints about it. Overall, I think this is a relatively plain sundae, but if you like things very simple, you'll like it. Mango sticky rice ice cream on a sugar cone - I love that mango sticky rice is gaining traction across beverage and dessert shops. So glad that Van Leeuwen hopped on the bandwagon. While I don't think the taste screams mango sticky rice, it definitely isn't any regular old mango ice cream. If they wanted to amp up the mango sticky rice-ness, I think adding bits of sticky rice would've helped. I wasn't very satisfied at first lick, but it really grew on me, and I quite enjoyed it. Strawberry cheesecake yuzu ice cream - The strawberry cheesecake aspect was really good. I don't tend to go for cheesecake ice cream because I never liked the Baskin Robbins' cheesecake flavor growing up. But the cheesecake chunks weren't sickening or too big in this ice cream. The flavor didn't overpower the strawberry. However, the yuzu was another story. It was very overwhelming in flavor and strongly reminded me of Chinese chen pi (sun-dried mandarin orange peel), which has a slightly bitter aftertaste. I think incorporating yuzu into this flavor would still be nice, but they have to find a way to tone it down or make the yuzu a bit sweeter. read more

I love this ice cream and have been in here multiple times (just this week even!) but tonight maybe was the last time. There's a girl who works here who makes me not want to return. I came in to buy a pint. There was a guy scooping for a couple and the girl was buzzing around cleaning up and doing everything except ringing me up. Now maybe she is unable to do that? I don't know. I thought it was weird how studiously she was ignoring me. Another couple comes in. They're looking at flavors and they ask if it's the right line - I tell them if they want scoops to go to the right. Another couple comes in and they go to the fridge and get pints and get in line behind me. At this point now, I'm here for a good few minutes. It's NOW that the girl yells over and tells us that if we want to be waited on, we have to get in the other line. So we go and get in the ice cream scoop line - makes no sense. But we all go and stand there with our pints. The guy says to us "you all just have pints?" We all nod and he tells us to go back to the front. Where he rings us up. I am annoyed now. I've been in this store for at least 10 min. I was going to buy a waffle bowl to go with my pint, but not now! My pint is melty at this point. Ridiculous service. For absolutely no reason. read more

There's such a unique assortment here, and my go-to option is always the Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Brownie ice cream. I opted for one scoop today, and it definitely hit the spot. The combination of cookie dough bits and brownie pieces added a perfect mix of texture and flavor--every bite was packed with toppings, which I loved. The staff was super helpful and even encouraged me to try some of the more unique flavors. The beautiful decor and indoor seating added to the experience, creating a cozy atmosphere. I've seen the Van Leeuwen brand at stores in my state but my interest peaked to 10, when I realized they had ice cream shops near the area we were lodging. Located in the lovely Park Slope area (which gives 100% San Francisco vibes), I walked into the shop and instantly knew I was going to have a problem...too many delicious sounding choices! Breanna (sp?) was the lovely young lady who served me. I watched her kindly help a couple with a toddler taste and make their selections. When it was my turn I knew what flavors I wanted to sample...until I rounded the ice cream case and saw more flavors! I decided on the Italian hazelnut and the banana bread pudding. Both were absolutely delicious! I don't recall seeing either flavor back home in stores but I will be looking. My husband and I visit family in NYC at least once a year and I am looking forward to more lovely flavors when I return next spring. read more

Give me all the creative varieties that includes, nuts, caramels, and whatever swirls of Wonka creations you can come up with. Now that's a good way to spend some calories. :) Anyway, I didn't order any Van Leeuwen for myself, but caved a little by getting a taste of the Chocolate, meh it was okay. On the other hand the vanilla was better with its bold, sweet buttercream flavors. The two stars here was the kink that spoiled the taste testing...ice crystals. WTF! These tiny ice particles in both flavors diminished the experience. I do remember Van Leeuwen and his partners in their Yellow Ice Cream Truck many years back. Now they have a multitude of stores all over the nation and still growing. Maybe calendar in some Quality Control Inspections to correct improper storage? I love Van Leeuwen because they (usually) have as many vegan flavors as non-vegan, and they're always excellent. The vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb is my all time favorite flavor and is always amazing. This location only had a couple of flavors the other day so I went with the cookies & cream caramel swirl, which was also great. I do wish they provided summer seasonal vegan flavors (sorbet doesn't count - not ice cream!) but their classics are always excellent. read more

I loved this location! After a well-deserved hair & nails day with my daughters, we stopped by for a sweet treat before dinner. It's spacious, clean, & a great vibe. The lady at the counter was very friendly & welcoming. She let us sample three flavors we were interested in before deciding. I enjoyed the "Blueberry Jelly Doughnut." It was good and not as sweet as I thought it would be. My daughter wanted a "Cookies & Cream" milkshake, that she enjoyed. We actually started enjoying the treats before I realized, hey let me leave a review, this is a place I have not yet patronized. We strolled in Van Leeuwen's in Park slope after grabbing a late lunch. Place is clean. Great customer service in giving us samples. Plenty of yummy flavors with Autumn special flavors. Tuesdays, it's first topping free. We were able to sample some of the new Autumn flavors. Cranberry crumble was okay. Sweet potato marshmallows was good. But, we resorted to an old time favorite which is the Big Face Affogato which is a yummy coffee ice cream! We bought a waffle cone one scoop with hot fudge. The ice cream was delicious! The waffle cone was stale, and the hot fudge definitely did not go well with the ice cream. We also bought a pint of Big Face Affogoto for home. The total for one scoop cone was $9.50 and another $10.50 for the pint. It was a bit pricey for the ice cream. read more

Although Van Leeuwen's is known for their vegan ice cream, I always get their non-vegan ice cream which tastes less creamier, so tastes healthier than the other ice cream stores around. It's really delicious, and I love all the varied flavors. My favorite flavors include earl grey, and I usually get one of the special flavors. One of my favorite flavors was matcha non-vegan flavor. Only thing is, I've been to this store location a few times, and I recently noticed that they give smaller scoops. I wondered if this due to inflation, but it makes paying over $10 for two very small scoops and giving an additional tip a bit hard to swallow! Or maybe it depends on which staff... *Shrug... I guess the move to make at this place is the vegan ice cream because I've been here 3 times since they opened in Park Slope and each time the non-vegan ice cream was subpar. Considering what they charge and what they've built a reputation on I was hoping for some mind-blowing ice cream experience equivalent to what the first caveman tasted when he threw meat on fire and the Maillard effect took hold. Alas, this is not the case at Van Leeuwen. My experience was more like what happens when you dump a sack of sugar into a barrel of cream and add three or four chocolate chips. Like, seriously, whoever comes up with the flavors at Van Leeuwen should consider obliging to the recipe. On my most recent visit I went with a "Summer Featured Flavor" called Blueberry Shortcake. After my third bite, though, I thought about calling my attorney because I feel I should sue for false advertising of blueberries in this thing. A **trace** amount of blueberry flavor could be had and I'm being super generous with the word trace. Most of the bite was sugar cream and if that wasn't enough of an insult to my blood sugar, there were also "bits of brown sugar shortcake" thrown into the mix, which were more like "globs of raw sugar dough". I'm sure in the grand scheme of things Van Leeuwen will be OK as evident of their numerous locations and pints sold all throughout retail outlets, but I think I'm moving on and I only hope my palate forgives me for the saccharine-soaked Hell I put it through. 4 stars removed because of a lackluster product, a terrible price point, forcing me to pay with my card instead of cash, and a genuine all-around bad experience with one of my favorite desserts of all time. read more

My second time going here and all I'm going to say is the employee that rung me up and scooped my ice cream was disgusting. I asked this man if he tried two of the flavors I was looking at he said yes I asked him what was the difference he gave me the most nastiest attitude ever. Basically just telling me the names of them when I was just honestly asking a genuine question. Then he takes my order gets it totally wrong which is fine mistakes are made in retail all the time. I leave and notice half my cup is only whip cream no ice cream he only gave me one scoop which I asked for two and paid for two. He argued with me infront of everyone when all I wanted was my second scoop I didn't even care for him to remake it he's like I ate half of it when actually half the cup was whip cream and I threw away half of it because of how sweet it was. Still love the ice cream but really arguing with a customer. Not to be a Karen but if you hate your job quit.
