Man that was some delicious vegan bahn mi! Got the "bbq tofu" and "lemongrass chicken" (tofu based) which were both so tasty. Also ordered a kumquat tea which was iced oolong with preserved kumquat -- wow! There was complimentary hot tea and water available. This is such a fun tucked-away food truck on the grounds of a Buddhist temple complex. Worth noting: the food truck has an indoor seating area attached to it. I'm continuously surprised by the wonderful finds Portland has to offer. My latest personal discovery is Van Nien, a charming Vietnamese restaurant serving vegan favorites like bánh mì, phở, and tea and coffee drinks. I've never tried vegan phở before, so today I decided to give it a try. The noodles were well-prepared, the broth was hot, and the dish was loaded with lots of veggies and fun surprises like fresh mushrooms, large strips of dried tofu, and herbs. The broth had an an aroma and aftertaste I didn't recognize. It wasn't unpleasant, but I've been preoccupied with trying to figure it out all afternoon. I'd love to investigate the ingredients of their vegan fish sauce, which may be used in the broth. That might explain the briny aroma. The food cart is situated in a semi-permanent location with an attached dining room with overflow seating outdoors as well. I mention the dining room is semi-permanent because there is flooring, windows and insulation, and the truck is sheetrocked into the building! I'm really fascinated by the design of this place. The building is on the grounds of a budhist temple with colorful plants and statues in a garden setting. I highly suggest a visit! read more

located inside linh son temple, van nien serves affordable and yummy banh mi! service was so kind and friendly, and i appreciate the transparency in using vegan mayo. i got the vegan fish banh mi, which im guessing is some sort of soy protein wrapped with seaweed and packed with veggies. also got a coffee. had a very pleasant lunch here and the courtyard surrounding the space is incredibly tranquil. read more

This was my first (but will not be the last) time ordering here... I decided to try a vegan shredded pork baguette and a Vietnamese veggie pie. Both were lovely - I am always grateful to find vegan food that is so fresh and great. And the prices are really fair. But to add to all of this, and possibly because I ordered quite late in the day, these lovely people included a little cake in my order with a message written on the box wishing me a nice day. Not only was that so kind... it turned out to be a really fun and rewarding adventure. It took me a bit to figure out how to eat this, since it was nothing I had ever seen or tried before - but it was really lovely and something I will definitely order again. The service was quick and friendly. They had an amazing buy one get one free deal on their bah mi. The worker there also gave me some delicious crackers on the side too. They don have the best baguettes for buns but the interior of these sandwiches are incredible. Definitely a must if you are a vegan on the far east side of town. read more

I often go to the temple to order food but Su Co opened this location & it's so much closer to where I live but the food is delicious either way. Depending on who is working, there may be a bit of a language barrier, but we were able to confirm (with the help of the google translate app) that they even have vegan mayonnaise! I'm really excited about this new truck. We got some delicious banh mi and she even had vegan mayo available (she was using Best Foods vegan mayonnaise). We also got one of the noodle dishes, which was super tasty too! It had lots of good veggies (like bok choy yum!) and a bunch of different veggie meats. The sauce was on the side and at first we didn't realize it wasn't already seasoned, so make sure to pour your sauce on (it's a little spicy)! Wonderful food and service. I tried this place for lunch today instead of going to Best Baguette and was pleasantly surprised to find that I prefer the sandwiches and sides here.
