They have a very generous variety of dishes whether it's a plate or a family style meal that you're looking for. I went for family style takeout and tried their veg fried rice, veg chow mein and the vegan chicken with orange sauce. My order was ready when I arrived to pick it up (about 15 minutes from placing my online order). Three family style dishes was enough to feed 3-4 people. The veg fried rice & veg chow mein were incredible, full of fresh veggies. The vegan chicken w orange sauce was full of flavor and the texture was nice and crispy on the outside. Amazing selection of well prepared vegan Chinese food. We couldn't decide on the menu so we had quite a bit of dishes to share and extra to take home. Appetizers were fried shrimp with orange mustard dipping sauce and Spring Rolls. Both were crispy and not oily with tasty filling. The "shrimp " texture and flavor was excellent. We also had the special chow mein and fried rice. Both were tasty with pieces of tofu and "shrimp" and veggies. I like the mein better especially the thin style noodles. We tried the sizzling beef with pepper sauce with red as green bell peppers. We also had the Orange Shrimp (yummy) and the Veggie Shrimp with Cashew Nuts.which was tasty with a lot of celery and some pieces of zucchini, carrots and cashews. This was such a good meal. I took my mom here for the 6 year anniversary of my dad passing since he loved Chinese food. The food and service were so great. Wow. The Portland Vegan Facebook group steered me wrong. 4.5 stars on here led me to believe the food would be great. I HATE wasting food but will likely throw most of it out. The fried rice has a very strange flavor. We plan to try re-cooking and seasoning it ourselves. I ordered a couple of the dinner combos to try different things. The cashew and veggie dish has good crunch and flavor, as well as the beef and broccoli. The crispy tofu was soggy from sauce, which I didn't expect, and all the things I expected to be coated in sauce- orange chicken, general tso chicken, were dry and the batter has a strange aftertaste. The egg rolls had it too and tasted like slimy onion rings. I wanted to love this place. Would be willing to try more traditional dishes but sadly I don't think I have the courage to give this place another try or more of my money. read more

Amazing vegan Chinese food with spectacular service! My boyfriend has been raving about this place for years. And, I'm so glad we stopped by when we made it to Portland. The ladies who run this place are sweet and helpful. To get the full experience, we ordered three different combinations which came with a bunch of entrees. Their meat substitute seemed to vary on the dish. Their seitan was pretty good and savory. Some of dishes did taste like fake meat but I had no issue with this. This was my first time visiting this restaurant. It's called vegetarian, but it's all vegan. And they make their own seitan there! They have a lot of seating, and it seems like it would be a great place to go out to eat with a group of friends. They don't have any outdoor seating unfortunately, so I ordered takeout. Parking was easy on a Saturday night at 7pm. I ordered through the website, and it was very easy to use. Rice is $1 extra for each cup. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken and the Kung Pao Chicken. Both were made with their housemade seitan and were DELICIOUS. It cost about $35 for both meals and a cup of rice. If you're not a big eater, you could probably get 2 meals out of an entree. read more

Yuan Su serves all-vegetarian Chinese food. (Perhaps all vegan? Hard to tell, as they don't have a full website.) They're in a giant red building off Powell and 111th so it's not exactly a happening part of the city or a fun dinner destination. I ordered takeout for lunch recently. Service stood out as above and beyond, from helping me decide what to order on the phone, greeting me when I walked in, having the order ready in about 10 minutes, packaging the order in a box to go, helping me with a complicated payment. The restaurant was nearly empty when I went to pickup. It's a huge space, somewhat spartan in decor. Looks like the building used to be used for something else. I ordered beef and broccoli, kung pao chicken, mapo tofu, potstickers, and rice. It was all good but not necessarily amazing. Portions were large enough for leftovers. Main dish prices were about $14-18 so a little pricey depending on what you get. If I go back, I will keep working my way through their menu to see what dishes are my favorite and how they adapt them to be vegetarian/vegan. read more

When people ask me my favorite restaurants, I'm often hard pressed to come up with an answer. Yuan Su is on the short list now! I've eaten here a couple times and am never disappointed. I highly recommend eating family style so you can try more things! Visited with a large group and got to try several dishes. General Tso was still a crowd pleaser and the beef style dishes were a major hit. The surprise was the lemon "fish" which was delightful. The location and concept of vegetarian Chinese food did not strike a good chord with me but I surprisingly had a very good time and thoroughly enjoyed the food! We went as a big group so we got to try a bunch of dishes and I think that's the way to do it with this place. I'm not a vegetarian so I was curious to compare their mimicked dishes and they honestly did an amazing job! The taste, of course, wasn't precise but the texture and eating experience were quite on point. Everything was made super fresh and we all liked everything we ordered. The dishes that really stoodout for me were the Pork Belly with Pickled Cabbage and the Pork Belly Taro Clay Pot. Their Char Siu was also very tasty. If you need gluten-free, it'll be hard to find options here as they could only recommend one dish with tofu and plain vegetables. The restaurant is surprisingly spacious and clean, service is consistently friendly, and although they don't seem to have many customers dining in, their take-out business appears steady. I've been here a few times now and I've never been disappointed by any of the dishes. Since I stopped eating meat a few years ago, there were certain dishes I figured I just wouldn't have again, but Yuan Su fills some of that gap. I never heard of Yuan Su until I learned about it from a Portland vegan group. After partying a little too hard last night I desperately needed something satisfying. I opted to order the dinner combo 1 which came with ham fried rice, beef and broccoli, and sweet and sour chicken (plus an egg roll) and a side cup of hot and sour soup. Online ordering was super easy and it was ready very fast. The restaurant is really big with tons of indoor dining and a decent-sized parking lot. The staff are super friendly and nice. The prices I believe are very reasonable for the quality of the food. Nothing tasted overly salty or greasy. It was all very fresh and delicious. Food: Since it had been almost 3 years, I wanted to make sure this place was still good before I took my whole family (100% carnivore) here. Thus, I visited Yuan Su for the 2nd time with my cousin 3 weeks ago just want to have an idea of how everything tastes like now. We ordered two dinner combinations (typical Americanized Chinese food). They still did a good job mimicking the texture and taste of real meat, but the (black) sauce they used tasted super salty. The waitress told me most of their American customers like strong tastes so their Americanized dishes tend to be salty. --------------------- A quick tip------------------------- For average Asian customers: I don't recommend ordering the combos or any Americanized dishes. Might as well order a normal dish plus a bowl of rice, and it is not going to be that much more expensive. --------------------------------------------------------- What I learned from my 2nd visit was that the spirit of this restaurant is still there so I took my family here tonight. We ordered about 10 dishes, they all tasted good but 2 or 3 of them tasted a bit salty. The salty ones used the same (black) sauce that they put in the combos. The owner said that all the sauces are pre-made by themselves so it is not easy to adjust the level of saltiness for individual dishes. One way to make things taste less salty is to use less sauce, and people can just let them know in advance. Not a big deal. They still have the same cook, and the Herb Sauce Fried Rice (personal favorite) still tastes the same as it did 3 years ago. They did a good job mimicking real meat with vegetables (mostly tofu, mushroom, etc). Personally, I have no problem eating vegetarian food if these are what I get to eat every day. When you order spicy food, you often get asked if you want mild, medium and so on. Most of the time, mild = not spicy and very hot = mild when I buy food from other restaurants. We ordered a few spicy dishes tonight and they turned out to be spicier than most "hot" dishes from other places. I think this is a good thing because what's the point if you order something spicy but they don't taste spicy at all? The amount of food in every dish is slightly less sufficient than most Asian places that offer real meat. However, considering the effort they put into faking the real thing and making them actually taste good, I am okay with the amount of food I am getting. The use of MSG can't be avoided if you want to enhance the taste of vegetables to make them taste like meat. I am okay with it in this case because mimicking real meat is their goal and that's what attracts me. Environment: Clean environment with instrumental covers of Chinese pop songs played in the background. Lights are a bit dim and it can be hard for some people to see things clearly at night (One of my family members couldn't read the menu). They tend to guide everyone to sit in the first half of the restaurant and leave the other half in the dark to save energy. Service: Service has been great so far. All the employees are friendly. All of them (or most of them) believe in Buddism, so they treat customers even nicer. I did experience one exact thing from all 3 visits, which was they promoted vegetarianism and Buddism to me (or tried to convert me). I am a very open-minded person so I am okay with that. I think coming to Yuan Su is a good opportunity for me (a 100% carnivore) to communicate with vegetarians so we can learn from each other and understand each other's lifestyle. Conclusion: I enjoyed the food here, so did my family. For meat lovers, I recommend this place for a different type of "meat". For people who want to or are in transition to becoming a vegetarian, I think this can be a good place to start. read more

The first time we came here last year, it was absolutely amazing. But this restaurant is slowly going downhill, when I go in there now it's almost empty every single time that I go with maybe one person there. Maybe it's because the quality of the food is slowly dwindling as well. The chicken that they use is so different now and tastes like corndog meat, I invited a friend of mine here with me before and was embarrassed at how the food tasted, they even said it tasted funky. The lady who works at the register never has a good attitude, and always seems to be not the happiest that she's at work. That combined with the increased greasiness of the food, and also I was just told that starting this year the lunch specials do not come with rice, you have to pay extra. I've never heard of a place that serves this type of food where the entrées did not come with rice. And I hate to be the one to go on and on but honestly I don't understand how they think that the way things are going to be sustainable, long-term. I just had them for lunch and now my stomach hurts, it's been this way for a while now. Love love the food here; have been coming for 8 yrs, but I have to say that the treatment of the servers, one particularly, is rude. Also, I can repeat many times to add xtra mustard for to go orders, and instead she will not give me any sauces or even a fortune cookie. She yells and will say it takes 15 minutes, but sometimes it will be 45-50 minutes. I don't stop going, because again...the food is fantastic. But I no longer tip. I used to tip over 20% no matter what - no more. I won't pay someone to treat me poorly. read more
