All-vegan, authentic, Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall serving up pretty solid veganized versions of classic Vietnamese dishes. We stopped here for lunch during the week. I ordered the Bo Bun Hieu ($15) -- a spicy noodle soup served with vegan beef, tofu, and round noodles, with a very generous side of cabbage, lettuce, and fresh basil to mix in. The broth was very flavourful but prohibitively salty after all. That said, the vegan beef and tofu were really nicely one, and the meal came together well. My wife got the kung pao ($15), which she said was solid but nothing tantalizing flavour-wise. My friend ordered the curry soup, but it seemed more like a curry that you pour over rice since it was served with rice and no noodles -- not sure what the deal was there. arguably one of my favorite restaurants in portland. it's been around for a long time, and they support + serve the vietnamese buddhist community and vegans alike. highly recommend the BBQ "pork" and noodles , the pork is super crispy and sauced nicely. other great picks of their menu are bun bo hue (the spicy noodles) and banh xeo. you can also order certain bulk / deli items from them like meatless cha lua and banh bao buns. as a viet person who's been in portland their whole life, their story and service is integral to the jade district. i can still have all my childhood meals AND be plant based. i can't stress how incredible this restaurant is, and i hope they continue to prosper! read more

My 2nd time here. It had been years since my last visit. I remember liking it, but not much else. This visit was with my monthly vegan dining group. I appreciated that there was a small parking lot outside the restaurant. As I walked up to the restaurant, it smelled divine! We were a group of 8 people, and we were able to grab a table to accommodate us all. There was a water station that we could help ourselves to. I noticed the carry out containers next to the station..good to know for later. We were given paper and pen to write down our order and hand in when we were ready. All this contributed to no waiting for wait staff. But that's where it ended. The orders started coming out randomly. Several people got their appetizers and entrees before I ever got my appetizer. The same with the guy sitting next to me. The guy next to me ordered jasmine tea, and it was quite a while before he got that. All it was, was a tea bag in a cup of hot water. Most of the group was done with their appetizer and working on their entrees before I got my entree of Lemongrass Chicken. It came with rice. Four large mock chicken breasts, I shared one and still brought one home. It was probably the wrong dish for me. It tasted ok, just really dense, and I'm not used to mock meats. I like mock meats, just not a lot at one time. I should have gotten the Teriyaki Chicken that I saw others ordered, it looked good and came with broccoli. After I was almost done with my entree, my tofu spring rolls with peanut sauce came, my neighbor got his spring rolls at the same time. The spring rolls were good! I love fresh rolls with peanut sauce! Shortly after getting our appetizers, my neighbor got his lamb balls. He said they were good. The flow of serving the food was terribly unorganized. Only one drink was ordered, tea bag in water should have been fast and easy. Appetizers should have been served next, before anyone started receiving their entrees. The guy next to me was starving, I thought he was going to faint. A few people shared a few bites of their meals with him. He just didn't want to eat too much before his meal arrived . Probably the best vegan Vietnamese place in PNW. My partner and I used to do the long drive to Chu Minh in Seattle to get our vegan Vietnamese fix, but no longer!!! Turns out there's a place in Portland that does vegan Vietnamese justice! The bun bo hue (spicy noodle soup) and Buddha bowl (crispy veggie duck) was so delicious that we were so quiet during dinner too busy enjoying the food. Excellent food, a basic but very clean interior, generous portions, friendly service. I had the red curry soup; it was delicious and hearty - and a 2/5 on the spice meter. My lunch partner had the Hue spicy "beef" noodles. He was skeptical of plant "beef" but said it was good (and he ate every bite). We shared the egg rolls (good but nothing special) and the Crispy Skins - which were great; who can argue with salty, deep-fried, anything?! Free parking lot on the side. According to Buddhist tradition, there is a bodhisattva who will appear on Earth in the future, achieve complete enlightenment, and teach the pure dharma. But in truth, my suspicion is they're lookin' to get on down to Van Hanh (and I for one, salute them!) Aside from having the best faux meat I've had, Van Hanh BRINGS it. Everything I've had from the Kung Pao, to the Banh Mi, to the spring rolls, to the egg rolls as been A+ and I'm legit a little hungry now as I'm writing this. Their pricing is super reasonable and I challenge anyone to find a restaurant with as kind and friendly people as Vanh Hanh. They're so nice!! Vanh Hanh has both vegan and vegetarian options, but they're not super well defined on the menu. That said, the person I asked was super sweet and helpful and I felt silly not asking earlier! I wanted to love this restaurant! Eater Portland had it on their list of good restaurants in the SE 82nd area, so my hopes were high. I met a friend there and we ate in. The temp of the room was really cold, for starters. We had to keep our coats on. The menu was protein & carb heavy with few dishes that featured veggies. The "mock meat" items we tried were pretty good, but they needed more sauce to keep them from being dry. And of course vegetables. Vegans & vegetarians tend to eat that way for health reasons, which includes veggies! We started with the egg rolls. They were about the same as everywhere else, with the obligatory sweet chili sauce (tiny amount barely enough for the 3 rolls). We chose Orange "Chicken" and "House Special", to try their "pork belly". Like I said, I enjoyed the "meats". The pork belly was crispy on the outside and tender inside. It just needed more...sauce, veggies...Same with the orange chicken. Both dishes were garnished with tomato wedge and a couple cucumber slices, so technically we had those veggies-more like a few bites of salad. We wanted to share the dishes so asked for our own plates. She brought us little dessert-sized paper plates! We couldn't believe it! Not even full size? We were the only people eating in. Personally, I'm not a fan of faux meat, so I asked that they not include the fake meat in mine, but I don't think they understood. They also included jalapeños in the banh mi against my wishes. I ordered takeout delivery while stuck at the house waiting for a plumber, so I can't speak to anything other than the food, but the food was delicious! I grew up a omnivore in a Vietnamese household, and now that I'm vegan, I am always looking for really good replacements for things I ate growing up. The bao texture was spot on, and the banh mi flavors were perfect with the mock ham! Van Hanh has a neat story* so I've been wanting to try it for a while now. I placed an order for pickup, and it was ready right on time. Located on Division just east of 82nd, there is a small parking lot or busy street parking. The bright green building the restaurant is in is really a house. Kind of cool. A small amount of inside seating is available, as well as a deck with some picnic tables. Van Hahn serves vegan and vegetarian food. It's not clear to me what's vegan and what's vegetarian on their menu, so it might as well just be a vegetarian restaurant. Based on that description, though, I'd think the dishes would be vegetable-forward, maybe lots of noodles or rice, and any fake meat would be either supplemental or excellent. While the portions are fair, I didn't love the flavors or textures of the food. Unfortunately, the fake meats seemed to be featured and it tasted dry. Overall the food was edible and approached the right flavors... I'd eat it if someone gave it to me, but ultimately not something I'd order again. *To paraphrase what's on their website, originally a nun came to the US. She lived where the restaurants is, as it was a temple at the time. She was struggling to get by, but cooking was one of her main skills, so she made the restaurant in 2005. She gives back to local temples and sends money to orphaned kids in Vietnam. She's training younger cooks to help at the restaurant now that she's getting older. I braved the rain and traffic in Portland to get to this little vegetarian, vegan gem after seeing the gorgeous waterfall. I choose the BBQ tofu as a side since I couldn't make up my mind about the main course. I thought it was decent, but it wasn't great. Just a little of flavor. It was an entirely other ballgame with the orange chick'n. In terms of flavor, the orange chick'n is right up there with the best vegetarian dishes I've had in the Pacific Northwest. Any way you slice it, I think the base was maitake mushrooms, but it was delicious either way. I rated it eight out of ten since it was excellent and because of the fast and satisfactory service. Portions are decent and taste good. I had no idea what to expect from the "crispy skin" but it's a unique dish made from the tough top part of skimming soy milk (yuba.) The ambience isn't amazing, and even though I'm someone who tends to be ok with cozy temps, I found it too hot inside. We moved outside, and the patio was lovely. After Watching Netflix show about Portland food cart we wanted to come to Portland to eat. In the Netflix show mama dut was featured as one of the food carts or restaurant. We were sad, but I did some more research and found this wonderful restaurant which serves some good vegan pork belly too. . We walked in and ordered the paid, and found a seat to enjoy. . Vegan Pork belly - consist of bread, taro, pepper, coconut and fried - it came tossed with some sauce and fried crispy. When I ordered I make sure I told them please make it crispy and add more sauce. The reason is I see mixed reviews about the vegan pork belly can be dry, and not crispy enough, or not enough sauce. The dish was crunchy and flavorful! We asked them to replace the rice and the noodles it come with, we wanted a salad instead. This dish was 14.99 . Fried spring rolls - comes with taro, vermecielli, cabbage. It was good and crispy. But the show of food was the vegan pork belly. . Overall we sat outside for the nice sunny weather. We had a wonderful experience too. The service was quick and casual. There is a nice parking lot, which was great for no searching around street parking. Hope this review helps. Updated review as of May 2020. I've been eating here for over 5 years so here's my take on the new ownership. IF YOU'VE NEVER EATEN HERE: Start off with the egg rolls and the pork belly. Vegan Vietnamese food and mock meat is more of a texture thing and if you're not used to this, some other items you might not like. So highly suggest you begin with these. I ordered the egg rolls, the pork belly, and the papaya salad for pickup. Egg rolls - for $5.50 you get three, kind of a rip off in my opinion considering it doesn't cost much to make. If I had 4 it would seem slightly more balanced (they used to give you more back when the previous nun worked there). Crispy and savory filled with noodles, carrots, and mung bean. Although ours was slightly oily due to them not draining it before hand. Pork belly - I've been eating this for 5 years and ever since the ownership switched over it doesn't taste quite the same. They didn't fry it long enough, albeit not crispy enough. It was still the same taste but the crunch really amps it up, so 4/5 stars. Papaya salad - They changed how they served this and cut giant strips of tofu skin instead of deep frying them into smaller crisps. It changes how everything melds in your mouth. Still good though. Overall 4/5 mainly because there has been a slight change in food prep. But still delicious none the less. I will still come here and monitor how the food quality changes. If you pay in cash and show them the website you get a free iced tea! This is only valid while it's on the website. Also a note, when I came in I could hear a man yelling at the lady on the phone for a refund. Citing that the food was "inedible" and to you sir, shame on you! This place has an incredible selection of vegan Vietnamese dishes that you cannot find anywhere else in the Portland metro area (unless, if someone knows another place - please message me!). I took one star off because it is hit or miss in how they cook the food. I usually put in large orders since I don't get to eat there often. At times, the batch I get isn't good because the mock meat is overcooked and the rice is dry so everything is just DRY, even though the flavor is good. I highly recommend that you give this place another chance if you eat there on a "dry day". When it's done right, it's terrific. It's run by a bunch of Vietnamese monks who don't necessarily have the best English so you'll need some compassion and patience. A lot of times, it's not an issue. Again, the selection of dishes that imitate signature Vietnamese meat dishes cannot be found anywhere else in this area. They have a "mini deli" section for lack of better term at the cash register if you want to grab some entrees and pair them with your own rice later on, or get the rice there; whatever suits you. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Can Hanh is one of my favorite vegan and Vietnamese restaurants. I've never sat inside and have only ordered delivery (do it through their site so you can acquire points), so I can't speak for the service. The food is AMAZING and so flavorful. I've never had anything here that I didn't like or love. Their portions are generous and so filling. My favorites are the spicy noodle soup and orange chicken. Everything on the menu is vegetarian and vegan! Woohoo! House Special (Heo Quay/Pork Belly) - A+! Soy-based pork belly served with rice. I wish the skin was a bit crispy but I liked the flavour a lot. Texture was great! Buddha Bowl (Bún Bì) - This was probably my favourite out of the three dishes we got! Lots of veggies and peanuts for that extra crunch. The roasted bean curd protein was the bee's knees -- perfectly chewy and crunchy as well. Pho - The vegan pho had a bunch of different veggies including brussel sprouts which I wasn't a fan of. I love brussel sprouts, just not in pho. Protein toppings were good (vegan beef, tofu, meatballs). The broth, however, was quite bland. I probably will steer clear of this next time. Other things on their menu: orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, kung pao combo, lemongrass chicken, and more! I'm so looking forward to trying some more items off their menu. I was visiting the area and got this delivered. Let's just say it was so good I went back in person the next day and got the same thing. I got the Budda Bowl and it was fantastic! As a mad Yelper I find joy when someone recommends a place that's been around for a long time, yet I'm unfamiliar with it. This is the case with what is probably the only vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant in town. I've driven by countless times on this major thoroughfare. I enjoyed the very glutenous texture of the Vietnamese dumplings, but not so much the mung bean filling. They sport two menus: Monday through Thursday and weekend. One of their marquee items, the Heo quay chay (roasted pork) was only listed on weekday menu, yet I was able to order it on a Friday. A little confusing. The "pork" was good, it tasted like yummy crispy French Fries. Which makes me wonder: why do vegetarian places name and describe items as they were non-vegetarian? For example, "tastes like chicken", "roast pork", etc. If I was a vegetarian I don't want it to resemble anything with meat. And as a non-vegetarian if I wanted something that tastes like...I will opt for the real thing. Anyway, probably a one and done for me. Limp, gray re-heated broccoli, a dish which is mostly white rice and a few little pieces of mock chicken, in a bland watery sauce. And the pad thai was worse. Oh and the prices have almost doubled. Barely had taken two bites of the meal before we were already saying "We have to come back". I'm constantly impressed by how delicious and convincing imitation meat is - the flavors carry the food forward, and they're great by any restaurant's standards, not just vegetarian or vegan places. From the appetizers the "Banh Mi" was the winner. For such a modest price you get a huge sandwich with refreshing vegetables to balance out the rich mayo-based sauce and the nicely toasted baguette. The tempeh is very flavorful too. We also like the "Steamed Bun", so fluffy and filled with fun taro and peppery peas. The "House Special" was great. The imitation pork belly was chewy but had a bit of char on the outside. I would have liked it to be saucier. The "Orange Chicken" was my favorite entree. A bit chewier than real chicken, the orange peel and modest amount of sauce set it apart from the mediocre fare at Panda Express. I recommend subbing the rice for "rice noodles", which perfectly pair with the Orange Chicken to cleanse the palate but add a hearty flavor from the fried shallot it's garnished with. read more

This is one of those places that deserve an instant review. It's a small place about seven tables but it's welcoming, bright, and has an open feeling. Our young server was nice and pleasant. We found out that this place is run by nuns from the temple. I wanted to try unfamiliar dishes, and boy I was not disappointed. The egg rolls, the Turmeric curry, and the chow mein were all excellent especially when you mixed the curry with the chow mein. I was also very nice knowing that everything here is either vegetarian or vegan. I want to try everything on the menu oh, so I will be back here many many times. read more

Well I sure feel like an idiot for not coming here sooner! After living in Portland for almost a decade, I finally made my way to Van Hanh on a whim for dinner last night. There's a huge parking lot. The dining area is small, brightly lit, and clean. We were immediately greeted and directed to a cute green table and offered menus. The server informed us they are re-doing the menu and this paired down version is what they had for now. I came in specifically wanting pho, so I was happy to see it listed as the first item on the menu. In addition to the pho, we ordered vegan egg rolls to share, and my boyfriend got the "Special Noodle" bowl. The only problem with the interim menu is there are no descriptions - just tiny photos. So he was going in kind of blind, but he has a strong track record of being a great order-er. His noodle bowl came out first, followed shortly by the egg rolls. We both waited for 5-ish minutes for my pho, (because I wanted that group shot for IG!), then decided to go ahead and dig into the food that had come out. I'm glad we did, because the pho took a while. I wasn't in any particular rush, so I didn't time it, but my guess would be there was a 15 min gap between the noodle bowl and rolls, and my pho. Our server told us a few times it was coming, so I was glad to know I hadn't been forgotten, so it wasn't too big of a deal. And we had delicious food to munch on in the meantime. When my pho DID come out, it was worth the wait! There were four proteins included: my guesses are a vegan pork, beef, some sort of meatball, and tofu puffs. It was piping hot, the broth was incredibly flavorful, the veggies were fresh, and the noodles were perfect. When we went up to pay, the server encouraged us to come back and try the other things on their menu.
