I've used them repeatedly over the years for large and small problems. I've bought several sets of tires there. I've been happy with the service, but early pandemic, I went there and they were unmasked. I called today for a tire repair and asked if they were wearing masks indoors, and the staff person laughed awkwardly and said they could if needed. I'm a physician, have treated too much Covid, seen lives lost, kids orphaned, have immunocompromised patients. There is a current public health order requiring masking indoors in Yolo County. It's not optional. I regret that I have to take my business to a tire merchant that appreciates that some customers or their loved ones may be vulnerable to Covid. read more

I've been to their shop 3 times in the past few months, and I'll probably be back again. Their pricing is reasonable; I was quoted $190 for a diagnostic (1hr shop rate) each time and that goes toward labor if you need anything fixed. As with any mechanic, it's hard to tell if you're being upcharged without a second professional opinion, but the employees are knowledgeable and each time I've been quoted for repairs that I expected to get for the issue at hand. Typically a same day turnaround, but they'll want you to drop it off early. Now to the reason why I only give them 4 stars. I went in because of a squeak coming from the front right shock. I'm no professional, but I had a feeling it was a bad lower ball joint. I described the squeaking and my suspicions when I dropped the car off, and I got a call a few hours later telling me that it was actually busted strut mounts. Alright, I'm no professional mechanic, so I'll go with their diagnosis. I confirmed that nothing else was wrong, and they sent me on my way with a $900 bill. Given that my car has stiffer aftermarket shocks, I've had issues with the strut mounts blowing and causing a rattle before, but never had it squeak. Sure enough, a couple weeks later, the squeak comes back. This time, they find that the ball joints are, in fact, worn out. It was a $290 replacement for both, which is a pretty typical price. It's not an issue of being up charged, and I don't doubt that the strut mounts may have been worn or blown, but I do wish they would've caught the ball joint the first time around. I don't expect to have to make multiple trips for the same noise, especially for an issue in the same shocks that are already being repaired. To their credit, they offered to inspect the issue the next day and without the diagnostic fee the second time around. read more

When I recently moved to Davis, several people recommended Vanderhamm as the most honest car repair business they knew. Today I took my VW Tiguan in for an inspection, oil change, and a problem with a gas cap light. Although they referred me to a VW dealer for the emissions issue (which was an honest call), they did a great job on the inspection and oil change. And for an extremely reasonable price! I have been going to Vanderhamm tires for years and love their service. they provide quality service in a timely manner and NEVER pump up the bill with unneeded work. Twice I have taken my car in all prepared for a pricy fix only to be told once that the funny smell and sound was a plastic grocery bag caught in the motor, no charge, or that the tires had another good 5,000 or more miles in them and didnt need changing. I got a nail in one of my tires, and was in a pinch to fix it quickly. I called and they were able to get me in the next day, and even had the correct tires in stock! Prices were reasonable for a brand new tire, and the overall customer service experience was decent. If you need your tires replaced, I would recommend going here. I called other shops in Davis, and none were very helpful and did not seem to replace tires regularly even though they advertised that they did. I am happy with the results, and will come here again to replace all four of my tires when I need to! read more

My Ford has been giving me quite some grievances ever since I got it. So once more it required the assistance of a mechanic. I towed my car to them under the recommendation of a friend and I am very glad I did so. My car was towed to their shop and they could only work on it two days later. While it may seem like a long wait, I do no regret it and would recommend that reviewers see it more as a mantle of their professionalism due to the high amount of clients they have. They were so helpful and efficient with my car repair. Additionally the cost of repairs was more than reasonable which was an added pleasant surprise. I called early in the morning, worried about the way the steering wheel was shaking badly at low speed. Blaine suggested I bring it in quickly and he examined it within the hour even though there were many cars in the shop. Realizing that my car needed a oil change, I called around all the oil change locations in Davis and asked for pricing. Vander Hamm was the cheapest. It's ridiculous to imagine some places were charging 100 bucks. -_- I was absolutely estatic to know I'll be saving a good chunk of change coming here. I called and made an appointment same day, and was literally in and out in about 30 minutes. That's the fastest I've ever had an oil change. This place has great service, EXCELLENT service, they get you in and out, and I appreciate that a lot. They were real professional, and honest. Honest is key when it comes to cars because not a lot of people know what they're paying for when it comes to repairs. I have been going to Vander Hamm Goodyear for over 15 years now. I can only say nice things about the honest, efficient and friendly service at this store. The one story I can tell you is from 2011. My husband was deploying to Afghanistan and many members of the Davis community said if I needed anything while my husband was on duty to just ask. Most of these comments had no real substance behind them, but not at Vander Hamm! One week before my husband deployed Rich said if I needed any car help, to let him know. And well, right after my husband deployed his SUV started having major issues. I took his car in and despite the severity of the problem, I was only charged $35! To this day I think the wonderful guys at Vander Hamm donated their time for free to fix my husband's car. They'd never own up to it, but I know the problems that car had were at least a few hundred dollars worth of repairs. So I think that tells you about the wonderful people at Vander Hamm in a nutshell. I love the guys there: Rich, Danny and Blaine. There's no better place to take your car to in Davis! read more

I spoke with a really nice person on the phone who helped me pick out tires based on my needs and budget. Rich didn't have a negative thing to say. My tire bursted in the heat about a block away and I couldn't have picked a better spot for that to happen. I drove my car 5mph to the shop and didn't receive a lecture about driving on a flat or an excuse to sell me a new wheel. Competitive prices for new tires in the area even against Costco. Two front tires (40k miles) with install totaled $165. I'm looking at Costco and it's coming up for over $200 for the same thing. Vander Hamm was the first place I called, and they were quick, polite, and helped me get estimates for what I might need. Every place I called after was less than helpful, seemed irritated by me calling because I didn't have ALL the information on my car, and probably thought I knew nothing because I was a female calling over the phone. Even if another place had cheaper pricing, I knew I was going to come here because they were actually helpful. Richard and Danny were incredibly helpful and polite in setting up an appointment for me, letting my know the updates on my car, and getting me in and out super quick. Super respectful, honest, and probably also the cheapest out of all the other places in Davis! They do get busy, but depending on what you need, they'll do their best to get you in ASAP. It would be my luck that I'd need new tires while traveling. I was a few hours away from home and I didn't want to risk a blowout. Being in California where everything seems to be more expensive than Nevada, I was preparing to spend an arm and a leg for 4 all season tires. I was fortunate enough to find Vander Hamm Tire Center. To my surprise, the cost was much less than I expected it to be. I paid $519 (including tax/labor) for all four tires. The staff at Vander Hamm is super accommodating and they got me in and out of there within an hour. While checking out, I was asked if I wanted to buy warranty for the new tires which would replace a damaged tire at no cost. I was hesitant, but was also considering it since I'm prone to running over nails/screws and damaging my tires. I really have to thank the gentleman for not taking advantage of my money. He told me since my car is AWD it's unlikely any tire company will replace just ONE tire, therefore the warranty may not be a good fit for my vehicle type unless I were to damage the tire within the next couple thousand miles or so. This is the main reason I gave Vander Hamm 5 stars, I instantly felt a sense of gratitude towards this company. read more

Friendly customer service. They provided shuttle service when I dropped my car off for a 60,000 mile tune-up. I initiated a quote from Yelp and heard back the next morning. Was initially quoted $415 via Yelp email, but had went elsewhere the prior evening and taken care of oil change and air filter replacement at another establishment. I called to get a modified estimate and was verbally quoted $299, but the next morning when I dropped the car off the estimate was $400 and by checkout time stayed the same. I checked under the hood after service and found that the battery terminal cover had not been replaced and was crammed in between the side of the battery and adjacent wall. I was a little disappointed at the seemingly bare-minimum under the hood treatment my car received. To their credit they addressed the proper replacements suggested by Subaru for this milestone.
