Remember the stories of the crooked auto mechanic? Swapping out your parts with old ones, selling useless or unneeded services, and misquoting you to get your car in their shops? Well, Vander Hamm seems to be on a quest to reverse those stereotypes! I bought a car (2012 Mazda 3) off of CL knowing that it needed it's front axle repaired or replaced. I talked to Blaine and he was very clear and thorough in explaining what exactly I needed. There was not hint of condescending, and he patiently gave me more information when I asked. When I needed a ride for my kid and I to get back home, he offered to take me in his own car which had a booster already installed! In the end, he called me and recommended that I have it taken to the Mazda dealership to check if I could get it repaired under warranty because 3rd party parts were not available with his sources since the car was so new. To top things off, he didn't charge me a dime for the diagnostic! Even though he had to look under the car, make calls to his sources for the part, and even talked to the Mazda service dept for me! I first went to Van Der Hamm in November on a rainy day when one of my wiper blades split. I asked to have 1 blade replaced on my Buick Encore. They had to order the blade and told me what time to return. When I returned the blade was not yet there. They said they had tried to call me, but in checking the number they called it wasn't my correct number. No big deal. I came back when they had the blade and they installed it. I am handicapped and it is painful to get in and out of my car. They came to me in my car rather than making me go in, which I really appreciated. I was in the car when the blade was replaced. When I got home I noticed the charge was $60. I called a friend and said my blade must be made of gold. I was stunned by the charge, but let it go. Last week I was filing end of the year invoices and in looking over this invoice I saw that I was charged for 2 blades. I went back to see them today thinking it was an honest mistake. It had to be addresses by the owner. He insisted that they put 2 new blades on & offered to replace 1 blade for free. I explained that I would rather get a refund. He kept insisting I was wrong--that they remembered me & the tech who replaced the blade is certain he put 2 blades on. Then I was told that all of their reviews are excellent. They are--that's why I went there to begin with. I was told that they have been in business for a long time & they would never make a mistake like that. I responded that I am sure it wasn't intentional, but I was in the car when the blade was replaced. I asked for 1 blade and I saw 1 blade installed. He said He would be back. He came back with my refund & told me not to ever come back to his shop.Wow...I thought I had found a service center that was local to Davis and could get service for my car as needed. I now need a 60,000 mile service but Obviously I won't be taking it back to them as they have told me no to ever come back. read more

Great service and they didn't try to upsell me in anything. I had an extra tire that I needed to be switched out for a bad one. They didn't try to tell me that I had to replace all the tires, which a Firestone in concord was trying to do. The treads were still good on all the other tires. They quickly swapped out the tire and mounted the new one on to the rim. With service and parts, it came out to $25. I'd gladly take my car back for any service I also have to say that they keep this place immaculately clean. read more

Called at 8:30 this morning needing new tires for my 2008 Mini Clubman. The gentleman on the phone gave me several options and a quote. He said he'd have the tires within an hour. I told him I'd be there by 10am. Arrived promptly at 10, completed the paperwork, started reading my book... Was told at 10:50 the car was ready. I was out the door by 10:55. Interesting to note, when I was in the waiting area, there were two other customers waiting. Both of them had the same reaction when it was quite obvious that their cars were ready faster than they thought. One gentleman exclaimed that he was prepared to have to wait until noon, but was walking out the door at 10:35. Great service! read more

This place is very honest which I find more important than anything else when it comes to cars. I brought my truck in for a free estimate after a Toyota dealership told me I had torn bushings and leaking CV boots. Toyota has hounded me to come back to dealership for the service because they can do it all in one day with the bushings costing a little over $800. No price given on CV boots. Vander Hamm put my truck up and called me so that they could "show" me that in fact nothing needed to be repaired for a while. No rush Blaine said...it will likely last at least a year, maybe two. Toyota made it sound like pending doom was upon me. ...and their cost...when I'm ready...was $50 less than Toyota's. read more

After getting my car's routine maintenance done at the dealership, they told me they had to charge $180 for a critical issue: brake fluid flush. That sounded expensive to me so I told them I'd have that done elsewhere. Shopping around Davis I found other places that charged up to $220. So expensive! I looked around and found Vander Hamm Goodyear. They quoted me about $80 so I brought my car in. Cliff took a look at it and said right away that a car as new as mine doesn't usually need a brake fluid flush done. He spent about 10 minutes going through my car with me and showing me that my brake fluids look fine. He actually refused doing a service he knew was unnecessary and didn't charge me a dime for looking over my car. Awesome, awesome service. It's hard to find a honest auto shop these days! read more

I moved to San Francisco a couple years ago and I still go back to Davis to get Tires at Vander Hamm - In Chuck's spirit they carry on the tradition of the friendly service oriented 50's era auto shop. With people like Blaine up front always honest and dedicated to running a business they can be proud of. Not necessarily know for having cheap tires but definitely known for quality and standing behind their service. If anything were ever in question they would probably make it right but the truth is they do what they do so well that it's usually right the first time. They have a waiting area with free coffee and newspapers, magazines and it's actually a pleasure to wait for your car. These guys and George's auto repair over on 8th Street are the two best auto repair places in Yolo County- honesty and high quality. This place is run the way a business should be. Aside from getting my oil changes and tires installed here, I most recently went in to get my brake pads replaced (they started squealing). After performing a free brake inspection they let me know I didn't need new pads yet. They said I have about 25% life left and wouldn't need them replaced for another 10000 (estimated) miles. The squealing was probably from built up brake dust. As a broke college kid I was relieved I didn't have to pay anything, going anywhere else I would have probably left in debt. Great service, not great for my wallet. 4 tires ran me about $550-something (which is expected) but tax and service fees added an additional $100+. Final bill came out to be over $750. Overall very pleased with the tires and the service was pretty quick, but sweet jesus my wallet took a hit. They offer free water. read more

Excellent service and very helpful with fixing my tire. They made sure that I could patch it vs. buy a tire. My total bill was 22.50 plus tax. Great guys here who do honest, top work! I went to several other shops down the road on my way to Sacramento-one refused to patch it and one yelled at me telling me I was wrong, but here at this shop in Davis, they worked with me and helped solve the problem reasonably and safely. Without a doubt the most positive experience I have ever had with a mechanic. I brought in my Ford Taurus, because it seemed be having problems with coils/spark plugs miss-firing. They checked my coils and plugs and they were all fine, so they guessed that it might be a computer problem. They didn't have the equipment necessary in house, so they shipped off the part (overnight) to one of their partners who looked at it and said they couldn't find a problem. Goodyear called and let me know that whatever was wrong was something that would have to be fixed at a Ford dealership. Disheartened, I went to pick it up expecting I would have to pay at least $400 for the two separate diagnosis and the shipping of the part (about $50 each way)... THEY CHARGED ME ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! When I looked at my receipt it said $0.00, so I asked what I owed. The mechanic (Rich) told me I didn't owe anything, and my jaw dropped. They weren't going to add insult to injury by charging me for a problem they didn't fix. This is absolutely unheard of! They actually took a loss to cover the shipping expense and didn't charge me at all for labor. Also Rich was wonderfully sympathetic and communicative through the whole process. Unfortunately, I still have to take my car to the dealership, but if I ever need any maintenance again, I will not go anywhere else. Thank you so much Goodyear-Customer for life! read more

This is definitely one of THE BEST auto shops I have ever been to. I trust them with my vehicle and that is a rare thing to find nowadays. Their customer service cannot be beat, and it is always a welcoming environment when I visit! Blain is definitely a shining star here as he has been working there for the past 20+ years. He's friendly, kind, and honest. He goes the extra mile to make sure you're getting the best deal you can, and ensure that you are comfortable both with the work that is going to be done, and in their waiting room. It is really refreshing to have someone who is able to answer questions, and explain precisely why something needs to be done, or why it should be done a certain way. As opposed to just being told that x needs to be done because that's the way it is! It really does make trusting them that much easier!! I must agree, Vander Hamm Tire Center is amazing. I had a nail wedged pretty deep in my rear left tire so I brought my car in to get it patched before I drove back to SF, just in case anything happened. They were extremely friendly and greeted me with a smile. This is the first time I've been to an auto shop on my own and they made me feel so comfortable. After explaining my situation, my car was promptly inspected and I was told it would be about $23 for the patch unless the damage was more extensive. I was told the wait was supposed to be 45-60 minutes but they finished in exactly 30. $2.50 for the patch, $20 for labor. For the service I received, I have no complaints. If my car ever needs more work, I'll definitely come back. read more

I had a nail in my tire and needed it fixed quickly because of a road trip the next day. They got my in immediately despite being pretty busy and had it fixed in less than an hour! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I got my car serviced at the Toyota dealership for a tire rotation and oil change but it took a very long time and they could not fix the nail in the tire. Very impressive service. I came here to get new tires with a recommendation from my friend's mother recommended after I drifted out of the Nugget parking lot while pulling out onto Covell. Woops. I spoke on the phone to Blaine for a quote on several different brands of tires, and decided to get Kumhos. They took a day to get in, and about two hours and $694 later, my Lexus had fresh rubber that kept it velcroed to the pavement. Blaine himself was always friendly and knowledgable, and kept me updated about the progress of the car. There was even a follow-up service call. I came later for a wheel alignment, and received the same great service. The people here are super nice and always ready to help. Even though I have relocated to Santa Cruz, I still stop by Davis every once in a while and am reminded of Vanderhamm's presence when I go visit my aunt and uncle, and it's safe to say that when I need new tires, I'll probably end up driving 2.5 hours from Santa Cruz to Davis just to receive the top-notch customer service and work Vanderhamm does. read more

Great service - would definitely recommend! Had a tire that was leaking air, and they fixed it up just great. My only gripes are that the waiting area is in dire need of an update, and that there needs to be more consistent attention in the front room. It took longer than expected for them to fix my tire (more than an hour), and was hard for me to find someone to ask for an update. read more

These folks know how to do business. Went in because my front wheels were shimmying, especially at high speeds, so I assumed the balance was off. When I took the car in to Vander Hamm, one of their staff (who was already busy servicing another customer's vehicle) came right up to me and immediately began inspecting my vehicle after I gave him a short description of the problem. He promptly informed me that the balance wasn't the problem, but old tires that were separating. He showed me the glaring signs of tread separation that were causing the shimmying, which were, of course, on the insides of the tires and not obvious upon casual inspection. Afterward, he had me speak to someone about a quote for new tires, and there was no mention of paying for the inspection I had just received. The next day, I went to have the tires replaced, and not only was the price EXACTLY what was quoted to me the day prior, but the time estimate for completion of the job was spot on. The problem I was experiencing is gone, and the car drives great. Anyone less honest could have easily sold me on a balancing job before "realizing" that the tires were the cause of the problem. On top of it all, they have a nice waiting room, conduct themselves like professionals, and are very friendly. In short, I highly recommend this place if you need tires in Davis. read more

I am staying at a friend's a apartment for the week and I came by Vander Hamm to adjust my brakes. I drove up from Anaheim and stopped along the way in Bakersfield to replace my rotors and brakes after they started vibrating during hot braking. The mechanic in Bakersfield botched the front left brakes and so the caliper was scraping against the rotor. After I had them installed I put ~300 miles on it by driving to Sacramento, all over San Francisco, and back to Davis. I realized it was not normal and it does not take this long to bed in brakes. Vander Hamm fit me into their schedule after two other shops were fully scheduled. They inspected my brakes and adjusted them for free. If you are in Davis, I recommend coming to Vander Hamm for expedited service. read more

They replaced my gas cap and then my check engine light turned on again--turns it the evaporation system had a leak. This is hands-down the best auto shop I've ever patronized. For me, the biggest issue when it comes to auto care is trust. Without much car expertise, one has to believe the service provider more than in most routine commercial dealings. The Vander Hamm guys have been really honest with me. Once while getting an oil change, I told them I thought the cabin air filter might need replacement. Slam dunk for them, right? When I returned for the car, they said they checked the filter and it didn't need replacement. They have never pitched more service than I asked for. Besides that, their prices are reasonable, the work seems good and timely, and they are unassuming guys who make the atmosphere quite comfortable. read more
