This is one of our favorite Dutch stores too! The store is organized and very neat. We love getting our chocolates, teas (which my family back in California loves!), and cheese! Especially the cumin one, it's so good! My husband is over the moon every time he's in the licorice aisle . The workers are also very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. What a great store! Stopped by on my lunch hour today in order to stock up on provisions for our upcoming Holland watch party streaming on Prime, March 27th. The staff were kind and so helpful! The Gouda cheese is from the Netherlands. Most everything except the pig in the blankets and some other meats are imported. The food was so fun and I loved that they had a whole aisle devoted to different kinds of black licorice. They also have Knick knacks like wooden shoes, painted tulips, cook books, and their signature China was also for sale. It's a small shop, but so full of curiosities. It was definitely a successful trip and I found the prices to be fair. read more

I recently discovered this Dutch store to satisfy any Dutch food needs. When you step inside, it feels like a souvenir shop. It's a real pretty store with Delft Blue ceramics and plenty of Sinterklaas treats and decorations. The back of the store has a good selection of Dutch foods--from licorice to bruine bonen. If you're Dutch and you know it clap your hands!! *clap-clap*. This place is awesome, it is a home away from home. Great for people like me, whom have at one point in their life moved away from the country of cheese, tulips and "gezelligheid". Wonderful for people who have visited said country and are missing the always popular stroopwafels, speculaas and Goude kaas. Or for the more adventurous eaters amongst us, people that like to go to little stores like these and like to sample a totally different culture. I say adventurous, because eventhough zoute drop (salty black licorice), rolmops (jarred fish), komijnenkaas (cheese with cumin), zoethout (licorice root) and Indonesian fare is normal for the thoroughbred Dutchman (or woman!), I fully realize other people might curl up their nose on these non-conventional items. First off, dont knock it before you try it!! But if some things are just a bit too much, I highly recommend trying the following Dutch products- all sold at the wonderful van der Veen store. Kokindjes - these are great 'entry level' black licorice buttons. Sweet as opposed to salty, and very mild. Speculaas - aka windmill cookies. How can you not purchase these delectable crispy spiced cookies. A corner of the store is dedicated to a koffiehoekje, so very Dutch. Several wooden tables, fresh coffee and complimentary speculaas await you. Stroopwafels - sweet, delicious caramel wafers. Do like the Dutch do, place the wafel over your cup of koffie or thee and have the steam warm up the cookie and caramel. Or place it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds (the modern way.."my" way). Im a 23 year old Dutch woman, what can I say. Chocolate - Droste, Rademaker, Verkade. Nothing touches Dutch chocolate in my book. I am a life long fan of Verkade, my honey prefers Droste. We both adore dark (pure or "puur" / "pure" chocolade), but get both kinds.. You have never tasted a creamier milk chocolate than the Dutch variety! Paprika Chips - Though a store brand versus an A-brand such as Lays, the Albert Heijn variety of paprika chips is something I stock up on when visiting this store. I believe there is import limitations, and that is why Lays cannot be imported. I love paprika chips, sweet paprika flavor yet deliciously savory at the same time. I crave the Bolognese and Cheese and Onion chips varieties all the time,.. But again; import limitations. Anything Conimex - great Indonesian products. Easy to make (side) dishes with Indonesian spices and flare. Kroepoek/krupuk is delicious, they are shrimp crackers and the Bali variant is to die for. Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles, have them on white bread with a thick layer of butter), frozen kroketten (croquettes, delicious ragout filled things that need to be fried), and the large PickWick tea selection should not be passed over. Also, once you have tried the smooth, deep flavor of Douwe Egberts (DE for short) coffee, you will gladly pay the *slightly* high price. Nonfood items worth checking out are the knick-knacks, Zwitsal baby care and sjoelbakken. During the different seasons, appropriate products are available. Sinterklaas (December 5th) brings schuimpjes, traditional chocolate letters, pepernoten (small gingerbread like cookies) and amadel staaf (almond pastry.. Again, heat them up and they are to die for). I visit van der Veen at least once a month, all the way from Metro Detroit to get my fix. My husband and stepdaughter being Americans LOVE this store, and every time I bring my friends some treats back they love it. A well deserved 5 star "yay" for van der Veens!! read more

I have had only good experiences with this store. Their products are fresh, they ship in a timely fashion and customer service is excellent. There was once an incident where a large bottle of soy sauce broke during shipment, but with the way they packed it there was no real damage to the other goods AND, when I let them know about it they replaced it without question, something I didn't expect since the breakage was not their fault at all. Very disappointed. I ordered a number of chocolate letters and pepernoten on November 16, three weeks before Sinterklaas. I just received an email informing me the order has been mailed. The package will arrive mid December, the earliest. Had I known it would be that late, I would not have placed the order. Sad our girls will miss their Sinterklaas goodies this year. read more

On several of our order we received products that where past their expiration dates, also the calve peanut butter is not the same as in the Netherlands. Customer service sucks here. I ordered weeks ahead of Christmas for my daughter and grandkids in WI. Order never received. Emailed and called. Found the order was shipped to their old address that was stored in their system, after being told first I had entered two addresses for them. But, because they have an ancient system that doesn't notify you the addresses are stored, it's my fault. Funny how my other daughter in VA received her order just fine, even though I changed her address as well. So, they're reshipping free of charge, but not next day air to arrive before Christmas, because "it would cost us too much". Hey, not my fault. We have been ordering from the Dutch Store for many years; and we've visited the store twice from Chicago. Lots of wonderful Dutch things, and a little sitting area where you can have coffee and cookies. Purchase some gouda clove cheese, you can't get it anywhere else (besides Amsterdam). My only complaint: we once had a near miss with our Dutch Store box getting rained on after delivery on our front porch. I caught it just in time, but had it sat in the rain much of the contents would have been soaked. So after that I've always asked that they pack our goods in a plastic bag. Their response is that they don't have any plastic bags !!! I insist, but they actually tell me they are not equipped to pack things in plastic bags, and are apparently unconcerned that their nice boxes of cookies and crackers, etc. could arrive with water damage. Such a simple thing to keep a customer happy; I don't get it. Plastic bags are cheap. If not for that, I'd give them 5 stars. read more

We ordered some gifts from Vander Veen's for Christmas, and we are so pleased with what we received! They have a lot of difficult-to-find items. We ordered on 11/30 with an expected ship date of 12/15. They didn't ship until 12/18, but it arrived the next day! Everything was packaged extremely well and carefully, and the refrigerated items were still very cold when they arrived. Vander Veen's is absolutely fantastic, and we will definitely be ordering from them again when we need more Dutch items. read more

I ordered there recently and, while they have a good selection, they did not deliver on time for my daughter's birthday. Instead of 2 days to get it ready for shipping, it took them 7 days. After that, UPS delivered in 3 days which was reasonable. When I called to ask where the order was, the person I spoke with said it was sent out late and she didn't understand why. They never informed us at any time that the order was delayed so we were late getting my daughter the items that meant a lot to her and that I promised would be there on time since I ordered 11 days earlier. The person I spoke to was not very apologetic and didn't seem to care that it was late. If I order from them in the future, I will be sure to give myself many more days than what they state on their website. Overall, a disappointing experience. read more

I have a Dutch surname. My mother's maiden name was Dutch, and my paternal grandmother's maiden name was Dutch. In other words, I have a lot of Dutch heritage, and my AncestryDNA results confirm this. Sadly, my family didn't eat Dutch food, speak Dutch, or celebrate any Dutch traditions while I was growing up. I wanted to get in touch with my roots, and so, during college, I spent a semester in Maastricht, Netherlands. It was one of the happiest times of my life, and this time abroad solidified my ethnic identity. I currently live in Chicago, so I occasionally place online orders with Vander Veen's The Dutch Store. I have always had very positive experiences. My packages have always arrived quickly and perfectly with one tiny exception. A jar of pindakaas (peanut butter) once broke in transit, but Vander Veen's replaced it immediately at no charge and with a sincere apology. Last weekend, I visited the brick and mortar store for the first time since I moved out of the area in the late 1990s. It was sheer delight! I stocked up on some Dutch essentials like salt licorice and appelstroop (apple syrup), and I bought a Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) ornament. The only thing that I found a little off-putting was the fact that there were quite a few items that featured Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), a controversial Dutch Christmas symbol that is generally regarded as racist. As a Dutch American, it's hard to understand why the Dutch in the Netherlands cling to this symbol, but it was surprising to see so many Zwarte Piet items, most of which were on post-Christmas clearance, in Michigan. As I noted above, my family didn't celebrate Dutch traditions while I was growing up. None of my Dutch American neighbors adorned their Christmas trees with Zwarte Piet ornaments either. I don't think that Zwarte Piet is part of the Dutch American experience, and I think the fact that these items were on clearance means that there's not a big market for them here. Thank goodness, if I do say so myself. I think the United States has enough of our own race issues; we don't need to import the Zwarte Piet image too. I love my Dutch heritage, but I'm not proud of this tradition. Luckily, we all have the freedom of choice. Therefore, I chose not to buy the Sinterklaas ornament that included Zwarte Piet. Instead, I will continue to enjoy hagelslag (candy sprinkles that are spread on bread), Limburger Vastelaovend (Carnaval/Mardis Gras) music, friet met satesaus (French fries with Indonesian peanut sauce), Caro Emerald's beautiful voice, André Rieu and The Johann Strauss Orchestra, Dutch speed skating, tulips, Gouda cheese, and the other positive aspects of my motherland. Therefore, when I hold my next Carnaval party, I will surely place an order with Vander Veen's The Dutch Store. read more

I am in love with the Dutch store. Like way more than is healthy. Vander Veen's offers a plethora of Dutch items--from specific cookie ingredients, chocolates, and the worst of kitschy porcelain clogs and windmills--and a cozy environment for Grand Rapids' legions of Dutch descendants to communicate, commiserate, or simply relax. The best part of the store? Well, it's a tie between the fantastic case of mouthwatering Dutch cheeses on display (pepper gouda=heaven) or the two unassuming wooden tables in a warm corner of the shop. Those two tables are next to a double coffee pot, a pot of hot water, tea bags, and delicious Dutch cookies or stroopwafels. At any point you can find elderly Dutch folk sitting over a cup of coffee chatting about life in English, Dutch, or a combination of the two. I was intimidated but delighted and spent a half hour over a steaming mug of joe talking about life with an elderly former WWII veteran and the Dutch woman he married after the war's end. Vander Veen's was, for me, a fantastic spot to rest and recollect in Grand Rapids, and a chance to realize how bad my Dutch truly is. read more

Amazing! My siblings and I made the trek up to Vander Veens to load up on some Dutch goodies! What a fantastic shop! The front portion is loaded with silly knick-knacks and typical gift shop items and in the rear of the store is where the magic is! Shelves filled with hagelslag, jams, koekjes, jarred veggies, stroopwaffels, silvo and verstegen brand spices! Chocolates and dropjes! Frozen nieuwe Haring and paling and a case full of cheeses! These guys totally screwed up my order. I placed an order for chocolate letters (12 as I recall). The order process with their website went just fine. All items were listed in stock and shipping was quoted. I placed this early enough that ground shipping was selected. I placed the order on December 11 and clicked send...then the incompetence commenced. First...I never received any confirmation of shipment so I called them on the 18th to make sure things were progressing. They told me that the shipment HADN'T EVEN BEEN PACKED UP YET. The lady even was looking for sympathy that she had "two stacks of orders before she could get to mine". This was fully a WEEK after my order had been placed. She then told me that it could not be at my place by Christmas! No communication was received by these guys without calling them whatsoever. I inquired about overnight shipping. I was told it might get to me if I paid $71 (!). It is Christmas and I had to have the letters, so agreed to pay this but this should not be my expense. This is a fail on so many levels. 1. You NEVER blame your customer for your inability to deliver. 2. You COMMUNICATE when you have issues (had they called me, maybe I could have selected expedited shipping rather than very expensive overnight.) 3. Any responsible company would either hire temp staff, pay for faster shipping or work round the clock to make it happen. 4. Never make your incompetence your customer's problem 5. Never put your customer in the position of having to pay $71 in shipping or tell them you can't deliver in time for christmas when the order was placed TWO WEEKS before Christmas. This is essentially blackmail. The only positive thing I can say is that the order did arrive complete...although they were not smart enough to ask if 2 day shipping would be preferred as they got it out on the 20th and could have softened the shipping extortion. Run...don't walk...to any other online retailer of Dutch food products. These guys are just awful. read more

Vander Veen's mail order does not stand behind their products. A wooden frame designed to fit around a decorative tile which we bought from them, did not fit. We had the frame more than a year in a drawer, thinking that when we needed it to mount the tile which we bought from them, it would fit. It did not fit, and when advised of that fact, Vander Veen's said, too bad, it's more than a year, can't help you. We wrote them a letter asking them politely to reconsider, and they refused. Such cold hearted business people, taking the joy out of what could be a long term business relationship as we have more grandchildren on the way for whom we will be buying tiles.... but not from them! Don't place a delivery order with this company. I placed an order on November 21st with lots of stuff for Sinterklaas (12/6) and even requested FedEx to make sure it arrived on time. On December 1st, I was told it was going out on December 2nd and would arrive by December 4th, but when I called today (December 5) I was told it hadn't been shipped yet and they were hoping to ship it in a few days. They never notified me of the delays and just said that they were busy. Now we will have no Dutch goodies for Sinterklaas. Maybe in person shopping with this company is OK, but their delivery system is awful. read more

Ah, this place is great. My Dutch mother in law sent us from Cleveland, Ohio with a longgg grocery list of things to get. We got every single thing we needed to make her little dutch heart happy. My husband and I also got a ton of things we both love such as the sprinkles for toast and those wonderful little gummy pigs! The cashier was so sweet and helpful as well. There are people working there who also speak Dutch and are very willing to help if you do not know the products very well. I've been ordering from Vander Veen's for over ten years and I've always had a great experience. My mother is Dutch and I've come to know many Dutch foods that are very hard to come by. There are several Dutch stores online, but Vander Veen's has the best selection, and the best prices by far! I also like that they have pictures of the items, so you can be sure you're ordering the right things. Some of my favorite items are stroopwafels, Douwe Egbert's coffee, muisjes, cafe noir cookies, boterkoek, and their selection of breakfast cakes. They also have a great selection of baking supplies. The shipping is a bit expensive, but it's sent via UPS and I always receive my items within 4-5 days of ordering and it's packaged very well. read more

Caution!! I had a simple 1 item online order and this company total screwed it up!!! They attempted to overcharge me 3 times the original quote they provided me. The owner/president Rick had to step in and try to fix my order, and he still screwed up my refund! Instead of refunding my account were they the took the funds from, they applied it to my credit card! Thus, they have now put me in a serious finance situation where I do not know if I will be able to get together enough money to pay my rent! Will NOT be ordering from them again!!!
