Here are the details: On March 10, 2026, I contacted my primary care physician, Dr. Michael Mertens, requesting a referral to rheumatologist Dr. Megan Byram for severe arthritis in my neck and hands. Two days later, I received a confirmation letter from Heritage Medical Associates scheduling me as a new patient with Dr. Byram on July 14, 2026, and included the required paperwork to complete before my visit. To prepare for the appointment, I requested that Premier Radiology send all imaging of my neck and hands to Dr. Mertens so it would be available to Dr. Byram. I also called Dr. Byram's office and was told she was booked through August and that she was accepting only a limited number of new patients after reviewing referrals and medical records. Based on the appointment confirmation letter and the preparation I had completed, I believed everything was in order. Instead, at 7:18 a.m. on the morning of my 8:30 a.m. appointment--after waiting more than four months and as I was getting ready to leave my house--I received a voicemail informing me that my appointment had been canceled. When I returned the call, I was told that Dr. Mertens had sent the referral in error because I was already an established patient of Dr. Susan Harwell. I was also told that if I came to the office, Dr. Byram would not see me. I did not even remember having seen Dr. Harwell, and I was surprised to learn that I would not be allowed to see the rheumatologist I had specifically requested. Patients should have the opportunity to discuss a change in physicians rather than have that decision made for them. This entire situation could and should have been identified months earlier--not just over an hour before my scheduled appointment. Heritage Medical had more than four months to discover and correct this mistake, yet I was the one who lost my appointment and wasted my time. What makes this especially frustrating is that patients are expected to provide advance notice when canceling appointments or risk being charged a cancellation fee. Yet Heritage Medical Associates canceled my appointment with virtually no notice and accepted no responsibility for the inconvenience they caused. This experience demonstrated a level of disorganization and lack of respect for a patient's time that I found completely unacceptable. I will start looking for a new primary care physician and rheumatologist outside of Heritage Medical Associates.

If this clinic wants to present itself as a mental health provider, leadership might want to revisit what "care" actually looks like. Walking in, I was immediately met with a barrage of paperwork focused on billing--making sure charges are clear to them, not to you. Not exactly the warmest introduction for someone seeking mental health support. The next interaction was just as impersonal. After giving my name, I was directed to step on a scale and provide measurements--no introduction, no explanation, no basic courtesy. It felt more like processing inventory than welcoming a person. Then came the actual "care" session. The provider launched into a rapid-fire explanation of all the ways the clinic can bill you, delivered with the energy of a fast-talking sitcom character. She shared that she knew I had already been given all of those details though just wanted to recap again. Then, she told me why she thought I was there which was not accurate. I asked her to slow down and please take the time to have dialogue instead of talking at me. She never asked meaningful questions or or make a genuine attempt to understand why I was there, which made any real conversation about mental health impossible. Overall, the experience felt dismissive, disinterested, and transactional from start to finish. The caregiver, in particular, seemed better suited to a role with minimal human interaction - perhaps guarding an empty museum wing, because meaningful engagement was clearly not part of the approach. I am genuinely appalled and disturbed this clinic presents itself as having any aptitude in mental health care. None of them demonstrated an ounce of intellectual curiosity or communication skills which should be critical in caregiving roles.

I gave them to the front desk person. She said repeatedly said I can't find you. I said It's okay I can fill out my paperwork (new patient) while I have a friend text me a picture of it. She replied. I don't have any paperwork for you to fill out. Really? She said without your card I can't give you any paperwork. Really? So you don't take cash?? Credit cards? I planned on staying whether I had my card or not. I had an EAR problem. She continued to just basically ignore me while I said - did you find it? Finally I walked outside. Had a friend text me a photo of the card with the EXACT same numbers / info I had already given her. Now it's 2:45 - there is no one else in the office. She says Okay I found you now when would you like to reschedule? It is the EXACT same time it would have been if I had sat down and filled out my paperwork. It was utterly ridiculous. This girl looked about 15 and appeared to have NO idea what she was doing. I had other things to worry about so I simply said - whatever is good for you? I rescheduled for the following week. Went back - same girl - OH SO pleasant this time. Immediately asked me to fill out the clipboard of paperwork that was there the week before. Then I am called in by a doctor that appears to be 20. Now I know new doctors might seem young but she just didn't seem to have any answers either. She explained how she would examine my ear and then send in her nurse. Doesn't the nurse normally come in and take info and then send in the doctor? It was just a STRANGE experience. I really felt like I was on a hidden camera show. This very young girl who did not appear experienced in ear problems talked a lot but followed up every comment with, but I can't be sure if that is what your problem might be. Then she says... I'm going to have the nurse come in and run a test on your ear. The nurse was the rude girl from the front desk. At this point I almost could not keep myself from laughing. It was the most ridiculous experience I have ever had. The doctor then returned with the test results and repeated there may be fluid OR this may just be your normal ear test results. As it showed a little bit off from being normal I guess. It was the most inconclusive bizarre appointment I have ever experienced. I hope there is not a large fee for this appointment or it will definitely be challenged. Left the parking lot in hysterics calling another doctor who may have a better understanding what is going on with my ear! I really felt like I was in a high school mock doctor's office.

I had my 2nd child with Diana Health in 2023 and now am about to have my 4th there…read more I had my 1st child in Nashville at St. Thomas & a Dr. from Heritage Medical. After having a less than ideal experience, I switched to Diana mostly because of Dr. Sizemore & Dr. Kellett. I was told they would be able to give me the best chance at a vbac (which I was able to successfully have because of Dr. Kellett & Diana Health). The practice has grown A LOT since my first visit in 2022, the waiting room is often packed but they still are efficient. I drive from Nashville to Smyrna which isn't too bad (20ish min) as long as I plan my appointments around traffic. Diana Health is often on time for appointments. There's been a few times a doctor has been delayed, but it's rare. I've probably had 60 appointments across 3 births and this has maybe happened 2-3 times. The doctors at Diana health are great - I've had Kellett, Sizemore & Grimm. They have 2 new doctors that I haven't had any experiences with. The midwives are really hit or miss. I've seen a lot of different midwives because I often schedule appointments based on time vs provider. I've found the midwives that have had children to be MUCH better than the ones who have not. I've had a few weird experiences with midwives so now I go to their profiles online to make sure they have had kids before I schedule. The ones who haven't have induced unnecessary fear & I think some of it is the difference between reading something in a book vs actually having the experience of being pregnant. Obviously there are probably great providers who have no kids vice versa but I don't have that much time to figure it all out. My experience with the ultrasound techs is great. I really like the women I've seen and they are kind, fast & overall pleasant. My experience delivering at the hospital has been great with the nurses and whatever midwife/doctor is on call. I've had some issues with insurance and billing. It's frustrating but I've been able to work them all out eventually. I don't feel like this part is better or worse than any other medical office. Overall, I'd recommend Diana Health. I truly believe everyone there wants what is best for me & my babies. They are collaborative & supportive of my choices. My only complaint is their online system for checking in and billing. It sends a truly unreasonable amount of messages about payments or saving a card on file. In the past the person at the desk just had me pay before my appointment when checking in, which feels more reasonable. I'm not going to save a card on file, there are too things that get messed up on the billing & insurance side. I have gotten 1-2 messages a week for the last 25 weeks.
