This was a fun stop on our way home from the beach going through Delaware on route 404. It is directly off the road. You don't have to navigate anywhere to find it. It's a perfect stop because you get a treat, they have a bathroom, and a playground where the cows come right next to you. The ice cream is delicious. If you are a real ice cream aficionado, this ice cream has a pull to it and you can tell it's high quality. I did feel dumb when I ordered 3 kiddie scoops and then my brother got a triple scoop to share with his family, getting the same thing for $3 less. My vegan friend introduced me to Vanderwendes. Years ago, she made me stop here on the way to the beach just to introduce me to it. Thick and flavorful, you get an extra-large straw to get all that creamy goodness! It was a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed; people seated indoors and out, a long line to the cash register and of course, the cows roaming about! I had Peanut Butter Cookie Dough which was a vanilla base with peanut butter woven in and soft cookie dough chunks. Both flavors were creamy like a good ice cream should be but for whatever reason the Cappacino Crunch was firmer. At 8 PM, there was a long line of people anxiously waiting to get a scoop (or two) of delicious ice cream. You can also grab fresh dairy products (different types of milk including chocolate, which I was eyeing) for a reasonable price! The ice cream here is quite cheap! And their scoops are HUGE. My friend and I shared a double scoop for $6 which was honestly like 2-3 scoops of each of the two flavors we got. I really liked the banana fudge nut ice cream flavor, which had a strong and pleasant banana flavor and a solid crunch from the walnuts. Our other ice cream flavor was chocolate, which is a classic. The cocoa was high quality and it reminded me my love for chocolate. The ice cream was super smooth and overall not too sweet. The outdoor seating area had a nice vibe with a tent and fairy lights. In the horizon, you can see a lot of cows roaming around and having a chill time. Vanderwende's Ice Cream Shop is a great little roadside attraction. We stopped at Vanderwende's on our drive back home from vacation. We needed to get out and stretch our legs after driving for hours. This shop has a lot of parking available. The parking lot is gravel not paved just to let you know but that was no problem. There are cute cow themed sculptures and a cow photo opp board for the kids. There is a swing set and slide for kids. You can walk over to look at the cows in the fields. Everything here is neat and clean and tidy. Inside the shop is spacious and clean. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. There is one restroom and it is clean but there may be a line for the restroom so just be prepared. Now for the piece de la resistance - the ice cream. The ice cream is omg sooo good. The prices were very fair too. We shared a double scoop in a waffle cone. The serving size was enormous for only $6. We tried the Cookie Dough and Holy Cow. The Holy Cow ice cream was my choice and it was a perfect combo of vanilla and chocolate and candy bits mixed in. This place is a must stop if you are in the area! read more

I arrived right before a rush, so for mine the whipped cream and cherry was forgotten, but it was quickly added when I asked. I shared mine with a friend since it's so much icecream. Definitely delicious though. I don't recommend the gummybears as toppings because the coldness of the icecream makes them really tough. That's probably at any icecream place so that's just a lesson learned on my part. The Oreo toppings were a yummy crunch at the bottom of my cup. Which was huge' it was really 3!! Big scoops I had to ask for a cup and spoon because I knew it was going to take awhile to eat it all! I also opted For the homemade waffle cone. My goodness their ice cream is so rich , creamy, smooth and Flavorful I did not want it to end ! I Ate my cone so slowly.
