It has been over a decade since I last visited Vanderwende... and it's amazing how the place has transformed. Who remembers when the lot was just a patch of dirt? Ice cream is still as creamy as I remember back then and flavor options and other offerings have exponentially grown! Extra snacks, take home pints, and refreshing drinks are also available for purchase. Outdoor seating includes direct view of the resident animals and an added children's playground to burn off the calories while parents sit and enjoy their treats under the pergola in picnic tables or by the shaded areas on the adirondacks. Fun roadside stop on the way back from Rehobeth Beach. We shared a 3-scoop cup, given it was a much better value. Got the cappuccino chip (4/10, not many chips), chocolate fudge ripple, (8/10) and peanut butter fudge crunch (10/10). Really creamy and good! Driving to/from Rehoboth beach and I randomly saw this ice cream place and needed to give it a try. It's also cool that it's a farm to table establishment. The employees were patient, quick, and very kind to each customer they were helping, especially considering the long line that kept getting more people. There was plenty of seating indoors and an outdoor picnic table area if you wanted to enjoy your sweet treats outside. I got a single scoop for $6, but they jammed my cup with so much ice cream I swear it should have been a double scoop. The ice cream itself was super creamy and rich, and it is the best coffee flavored ice cream I've had so far. I only wish I could have these in Maryland, unfortunately they're located in Delaware and one shop in Pennsylvania. Must try for ice cream if you're in the area! read more

I've been at this location twice and the other one down the road (6 minutes away) once. The other location has more seating outdoors I think. Fresh ice cream in many crowd pleasing flavors. The scoops are extremely generous, 2 scoops really means 6 scoops, so it's a LOT for just one person. I like sharing with my husband, and we get two flavors. Had the maple and the salty caramel, and the salty caramel was my favorite! There are only three picnic tables outside. No seats inside. My boyfriend and I are on the journey to try all the ice cream places and we always pass this place whenever we drive to Delaware. Walking in, the staff member was incredibly friendly and gave off a very welcoming environment. My boyfriend really loves coffee flavored ice cream and he really enjoyed the cappuccino crunch flavor. He said it has a nice texture to it and one of the better coffee flavors he had in the area. I got the birthday cake ice cream and I really enjoyed it. One thing to note is that the ice cream is really dense and they give alot for a standard cup! I was so full I couldnt eat dinner ahah My puppy really enjoyed her doggy ice cream. I had the cappuccino chip and cookies and cream ice cream in a single scoop. For $3.50, 3 scoops of ice cream, and two flavors, that's a really good deal. The ice cream is really well priced but the flavor and texture of the ice cream was okay. The ice cream wasn't creamy and tasted more mass produced rather than from a local creamery. The cappuccino chip was also a little salty and didn't have enough of an espresso flavor. It was just okay. I also felt pretty uncomfortable when walking in. I pass by Vanderwende's whenever I drive to the beach. I usually just keep going since there's ice cream at the beach, but I decided to stop by during my most recent trip. I'm glad I did because the ice cream is delicious and they give a generous amount. It's definitely up there with The Ice Cream Store in Rehoboth and Island Creamery in Berlin. It's a cute store too! Having never been here before, and wanting to avoid the tourists locations' and experience the local location - especially being right around the school I arrived on the first day this location opened. Inside is decorated with various products and very welcoming. The service is fast and great, the flavors are great to choose from with not too many, and the taste is superb. I ordered the Apple pie flavor, and I could hope for no more flavor than I received. After many reviews from students and staff, this was worth a hot days stop, and excited to know this location, as well as the more popular tourist locations, are available and most of all, this is supporting local Delaware farmers. read more

As others say this location beats the rush at times with their other location rt 404/18 and is more convenient for us. Stopped by yesterday and had a kids sized Banana Nut fudge. Just felt like trying something different.The small cup scoop is huge so I go with the kiddie portion. It tasted like a banana split. Great if you love banana but I don't think I would get that flavor again though. My husband got the butter pecan. Of course I had to try his ha.. Omg now that is delicious. It is super creamy and well, buttery. Best butter pecan I have ever tasted. I wish they were a little friendlier here. Like maybe just say hello? I dunno they just seem unenthused about seeing customers. They stay pretty busy here so they probably are like dang another person again?? The ice cream is always fresh and delicious! The new location is convenient for locals who are trying to avoid the 404 traffic, and although there's a lack of parking and seating, the ice cream makes up for it. It truly pains me to have to leave a bad review because we absolutely love the Bridgeville Vanderwende's. We recently found a faster route to the beach but unfortunately that meant bypassing the Bridgeville store so we were thrilled to find a location on our way home. We stopped in yesterday afternoon and were surprised to find the lot pretty empty and no one in line inside (perhaps this should have been a clue, I have never not stood in a line at the other one). The young lady behind the counter wasn't very welcoming or friendly at all but maybe she was having a bad day so I went ahead and ordered a chocolate milkshake. Not sure if you have to actually request whipped cream and a cherry at this store but if so you would think they might ask if you want it when you place your order but whatever, no biggie. I got my milkshake and headed out, hubby immediately realized that it tasted nothing like any chocolate milkshake we have ever gotten from Vanderwende's - it wasn't very chocolatey to start with and the consistency was more like a chocolate milk slushy. It usually takes us quite a bit to drink one of your shakes but this one was gone in mere minutes leaving us disappointed and a little mad about spending $5 for essentially a cup of chocolate milk. Needless to say, we won't be patronizing this location ever again, from now on when we want a sweet treat we'll go to the Dewey or Bridgeville location, this experience was a real let down. read more

On Sept 12, 2020 we stopped in for a treat on our return home from the beach. They had all COVID-19 practices in place (markings on the floor, plexi surrouding the cash wrap, staff in masks and gloves) and offered a tempting selection of ice creams. I had the chocolate almond fudge, my husband the peanut butter fudge crunch. We both asked for single scoops on sugar cones and were given portions the size of our heads! One of the best things in Greenwood is this fantastic ice cream with such wonderful flavors. My favorites are all the fruits and all the chocolates.
