Carolina pig! Yes! I've been a fan of the Carolina style BBQ sandwich for a long time - BBQ on a bun with coleslaw. When I make it at home with my own pulled pork I also use my homemade garlic slaw which has qualities of kimchi. But I am getting off topic here. Properly cooked ribs will not just fall off the bone! But I guess you really have to consider your community and what they want and need. As a visitor to Shawnee I did notice that there may be a lot of the customers that don't have the proper teeth to eat properly cooked ribs. This may be the reason the rib meat is extra soft and you can num num num it into a meat paste. My experience, As with a majority of the eating establishments around here the food was OK. We got the Ultimate Family meats dinner for Thanksgiving. Everything tasted very good. We love Vans food.

Picked up our call in order for brisket dinner with vanized baked potatoes and the meat was dried out and the potatoes were dry and they didn't even give you butter for the vanized potatoes it was awful!! My husband had the ribs and brisket they gave him 2- tiny ribs and his brisket was dry. Also, his vanized potato was dried out and they gave us no butter! This place has gone down hill obviously. Spent $30 for leftover food! Waste of money! we could have got better at billy boys!! We will not be going back! read more

I tried to give this place 4 stars but I really can't justify not giving 5. It was delicious BBQ! I was crossing the country from Vegas to Atlanta in a small airplane and decided to stop at Shawnee Airport for fuel. The guy pumping the gas recommended I go here and I did. Found this gem of a bbq place passing through town. Had the stuffed spud. It was a large potato, lots of cheese and meat. They did not skip on toppings. Husband had the 2 meat- ribs and chicken side of pinto beans and cornbread. Ribs had great smoked flavor, tender, a little greasy but it tasted good. Chicken had great smoked flavor and seasoning of spices on top. A little dry but not enough to affect the taste. It was one of the best we've tasted. Cornbread was so moist and sweet. So good. Ended up going back to get pecan pie. Very very good. We'd go back. read more

No place like the original vans pig stand in Shawnee! Every other location is junk compared to the original. Moore location put a bad taste in our mouth with cold food and vinegar flavored bbq sauce. We didn't even bother trying the Norman location. But I'm happy with going to Shawnee just for the original!!!! Loved the banana pudding!! It reminded me of my grandmother's cooking!!! So good!!! I ordered the 'famous' pig sandwich. I had high expectations, but dry, flavorless pork with some homemade relish is what greeted me. Once I added salt and pepper, it was better. I had half of my sandwich eaten when I watched the busser drop an empty tray on the floor, wipe it a little, and place it on top of clean trays. I informed the meat person Rory. He said thanks, took only the top tray only and that was that. I couldn't eat anymore. Sorry, but I won't be back. I ordered and ate there on Saturday, 16 JULY around 1:30 PM. After this review, I was contacted by the owner. He assured me that this is not the standard. The employee was reprimanded and retrained. I visited a month ago and with an open mind. Stopped in here on our way home from a wrestling tournament. Got some t try ins and brisket to take home for dinner and had a sausage dog for the drive home. The sausage dog was fantastic!! My granddaughter had a couple of the ribs on the way home and said they were ok but not as good as our regular place. After trying them myself I have to agree they were ok. Better than some places but not up to jack's bbq in okc standard. The brisket however was not good at all. No flavor and full of fatty bits. Service there was great though!! Yes.I was writing my review while at vans on highland,allow to state that my dining experience was not unique to this one particular night, many times over the years that I've lived in Shawnee I keep going back hoping that the experience would be better but my experience is consistent always poor service always staff that most of them look like they're on dope or don't care that you're even there the prices are through the roof for the quality of food that I get, I would expect higher standards at Van flagship store but sadly they lack I usually keep my dining experience with Vans limited to the store on Harrison Street and then its only for lunch specials because everything else is way too overpriced. It may seem like I'm just complaining about the prices but the food quality is poor at best, I had ribs there that are pretty much burnt bones I've had Van baked potatoes better well over cooked to the point of being burnt so yeah I'm just probably keep avoiding it may be at the future some point when I forgotten about it I'll go in remind myself again sometime in the later future but as for now no I'm not a vans diner anymore read more

Van's has a long-standing reputation for good barbecue, and this location is the original. My inlaws from West Virginia make a point to eat here multiple times on every visit. So Van's gets the Mountaineer stamp of approval! My favorite is their smoked turkey. It's crazy tender and full o' flavor. Their barbecue sauce is sweet so it works well with it. If the front dining room is full, you might as well carry out because the back room looks like a bad 1970's cafeteria. The front has all the character! The prices are steep, but the grub is good. I've stopped into Vans a handful of times in the past three years (since moving to Shawnee 'Merica), but never really fell in love with a dish that made me want to return. Sure the food is good, but my common remark to my friends is, "My stomach isn't full but my wallet feels empty." Following suit in this theme, I recently discovered the Onion Burger advertised on the Harrison street marque, near my Shawnee home. After tasting the burger the burger and fries (both great) once again, my complaint was simply that the portions were too small relative the price. While this is rarely a point of contention in my reviews, something within me simply yearns for more. So keep it up with the good cooking, but reconsider your pricing structure: We live around the block but just can't afford to buy your food. read more

Mmm mmm damn good barbecue! We passed by a Van's in a strip mall on the way to visit friends and were like "we are going there for lunch, no ifs ands or buts." Little did we know that they also wanted to go to Van's, but they took us to the original! Yeehaw. It's a small restaurant, and not much to look at. Inside has a lot of character though, lots of wood throughout. Quite a bit of seating inside too, with 2 rooms. I was a bit overwhelmed by the menu, but decided to keep it "lean" and get the bbq turkey sandwich and the Vanized potato instead of fries. Turkey was sliced pretty thick, there were about 5 slides on my sandwich, and the turkey was so juicy and smoky. They put it on a nice thick bun too to hold up to the meat and sauce. The regular bbq sauce they keep on the table is so flavorful. The 2 hot sauces they keep by the counter are HOT and vinegary. They were both too spicy for me so I stuck to the regular. My friend got the 3 meat combo with chopped brisket, hot links and ribs. Brisket was chopped and juicy and full of flavor - I do not usually like brisket, but this made me a brisket fan. Hot link was red hot - super spicy after just 1 bite! And it was not fatty at all like other hot links I've had. I had to stop after 1 slice as it was too spicy, but it was yummy. Vanized potato is one stuffed potato! Not sure what's all in it, but it was smooth and creamy with bits of bacon. Great alternative if you don't want fries, but something tells me it's just as fattening as an order of fries. No room for dessert, you had to roll us outta there. read more

This is the first business I have ever frequented that actually advertised to their customers to review their business on Yelp. You may get a half star upgrade for that! Ok, on to my meal. I stopped by Van's to grab a quick BBQ sandwich. They call this place Van's Pig Stand, so I opted for the Big Pig sandwich. I liked that the pork was almost a rough chop compared to the traditional pulled pork style. It added a nice texture element. In fact, there wasn't much that was traditional about this sandwich. The sauce was of the thin variety and vinegar based (I think this is more Carolina Style? Not really important.) They also top the sandwich (if you so desire) with a relish. I liked that, it was different and added to that vinegar BBQ flavor. The large sandwich is served on a large, white bread, hamburger bun. Those are particularly well suited for soaking up thinner sauces. I liked the sandwich, but it doesn't rank up there with the greatest BBQ sandwiches I have ever eaten. Passing through Shawnee en route to Arizona, we stopped at Van's Pig for dinner--following Yelpster advice. First of all, this is a BBQ joint, nothing fancy, but the food was great and hit the spot. I had a Van's Pig sandwich--hunks of chopped smoked pork in Van's delicious sauce, with cole slaw and a side of curly fries. The sandwich was in a hamburger bun--not gigantic, just enough. My husband had ribs and brisket, which were also excellent. The place is decorated with retro detritus, quite appropriate for a roadside BBQ joint. The fact that Brad Pitt hails from Shawnee made me wonder whether he spent his high school years hanging out at Van's. I would have!!! read more

I checked this place out while in town due to all the reviews I read on here. I had the the two meat platter with smoked sausage, hotlinks, baked beans, and green beans. Everything I had was very good. The smoked sausage and hotlinks both were very flavorful and went well with both of their bbq sauces. The baked beans were mild but had a good flavor and consistency. The green beans tasted like doctored-up canned beans but were still good. I definitely give it another try the next time I'm in the area. read more

This is the 2nd Van's Pig Stand I have visited- and this location was terrible. I got the pulled pork sandwich, just like I had at the other location. This time I added coleslaw to the sandwich and when it came out the sandwich had a 1/4 of the meat than the last sandwich (at another location) I had. It was mostly slaw, and the meat was cold and dry. I've never tasted ribs as terrible as the ones my daughter ordered. Lukewarm, dry, not flavorful. My wife's brisket was out of the fridge, cold still. My son's sandwich was incredibly tiny, and also had lukewarm pulled pork, as well as barely any meat. His green beans were also lukewarm. I just did a review of a Phoenix BBQ place and all I could think of was Van's (and the other place was really good -- just not Van's good). My parents used to go here when they were kids, I go any time I'm in the state. We mail order the sauce and give it to each other for Christmas. On getting order I asked the young man to check & make sure it was all there- (My sister had ordered & paid earlier in the day-I did not know what she had ordered)--he said it was. then added a loaf of bread(-not buttered toast). 30 miles later half of the order was not there. Woman without gloves or face mask. If I hadn't already paid and was hungry for bbq I would have refused. No communication between workers. One male put food on dish and woman moved to takeout box. Van's Pig Stand...the venerable Shawnee tradition that just keeps on going. I must say that I am a little biased here as my parents met at this Van's while in college so if this Van's had not existed then I just might not be here to write this review so if I'm ever in a situation where a Delorean traveling 88 miles an hour takes me back in time to thwart this meeting and my reviews start slowly fading on Yelp, you will know why . This Van's is the original location that initially opened in the 20's and it is pretty cool with original signs from the time adorning the walls and newspapers from the 40's, 50's, to the present. It was much more unique until recently when they replaced all the booths with newer ones - the older ones literally had graffiti and scratchiti (graffiti cut in with a knife) from its inception and beyond all over the booths, tables, etc. and that was very interesting. You often wondered if Cecil & Linda ensconced in a badly drawn heart from '44 made it. If you are ever in the area it is worth taking the short drive off of I-40 to this location. They have all the usual barbecue suspects like brisket, ribs - and to me, the best roasted turkey ever! Their sauces are very good and their mild sauce is absolutely to die for as it is sweet and tangy and a great compliment to any of their meat offerings. Two of their signature items are the "Vanized" baked potato (basically a twice baked potato renamed) and their rum pie. Wow! You could probably get liquored up on a few slices of this it is so stout. The history of Van's is long and storied and was started by the Vandergriff family - hence the Van's name - and the Vandergriff family and two other families in Shawnee namely the Smiths and Degraffenreids banded together to start that all American chain Sonic! There are variations to the story and who started what but the family that owns Vans also owns equity stakes in the Sonic corporation still and many locations. So, while you are here check out the original Sonic (although its really not the original as it was torn down years ago) and the 3,000th! An American success story. A unique and pretty good experience. I'm not a connoisseur of all things barbecue but Van's is one of the best in my book if not for the history alone. read more

The chopped pig is awesome, and the sauce is smoky, spicy and sweet just the way it should be. Get the fried Okra, top it off with pecan pie and you'll think you died and went to Okie heaven. I really should not put this review in as this is a prime candidate for Triple D visit. Be nice to keep this one as a special secret place but the locals already know this is the place to go for BBQ. I had the Rib Dinner (4-5 rib bones plus 2 sides and Texas toast). I chose the coleslaw (fabulous) and the BBQ beans (pretty good). My wife had the chopped meat sandwich and it was also very good. There is not anything really bad to say about this one. We were there in the middle of the lunch rush so it felt like a special place to dine. By 1PM the place was down to about 4 tables of people eating lunch. If you want to avoid the rush and maybe not getting a place to sit go at 1PM. We had ate the day before at a Triple D BBQ place in Memphis, TN and it was very good but Van's had a leg up on the ribs and the sauce over the Memphis place. If you pay cash you get a 2.5% discount. They do take CC's. You order and give them your name then find a place to sit and wait for your name to be called. We will be back to Van's even if it is 3.5 miles south of I-40. read more
