We discovered Van's last year on our way back to Colorado from Texas. It was so, so good! We had to go to Oklahoma this week, so we traveled 2.5 hours out of our way to go back to Van's. It was every bit as good as I remembered. I don't know what's in their relish, but holy moly, it's like crack for your food. Grew up with this location on E. Highland St. being the definition of quality service and top shelf BBQ. Always enjoyed all the history of the buildings exterior and interior. Last two visits have changed my opinion. Flavor has been average at best. Bordering on boring. Staff has become rude and careless about customer service. Loud conversations about not caring and personal life embarrassing stories. I will say most of that applied to the kitchen staff. The young lady taking our order was 'okay'. These two visits have been about two months apart. Probably not going back to that location which is a shame considering its history. read more

Flew into OKC to pick up my new Jeep I bought online from Joe Cooper's and when done with the paperwork, I needed a good dinner. The guys recommended this spot which was about 2 miles from the dealership so I was sold. I walked in to this place and was surprised there was really no one there. You walk up to the counter to order your food and they bring it to you. I ordered the brisket, Mac and cheese, fried okra, and of course the banana pudding which instantly caught my eye when I walked in. The brisket was great, good portion for the price. Mac and cheese was similar to what I have gotten most any other place, and fried okra was light and crispy and paired well with the homemade ranch. The banana pudding was my favorite. I ate it while driving back to Colorado and was in heaven. Definitely a good BBQ spot and worth trying if in the area. read more

One of my absolute all-time favorite BBQ places! I have been eating here for close to 40 years as my grandparents lived in Shawnee and we would always go to Van's when I went. Started back in 1929 this BBQ has got a great hickory flavor and the sauce is unique to anything I've had elsewhere. A couple things to remember, if you are going to make the drive to Shawnee make sure you go to the original location on Highland Blvd. While I don't mind some of the satellite locations around the state, you just don't get the taste and atmosphere you get from the Highland location that's been around before I was born. Also, DISCLAIMER: I've been eating there for almost 40 years but I'm a major creature of habit I only get the ribs, curly fries, and beans. I sent some people once and they must have been having any off day at Vans and a lot of stuff they tried was dried and not good. Don't stray and trust the locals! I would recommend this to all BBQ lovers though and hope you enjoy as much as I do read more

I ordered two meat combo, portions were very small for the beans and the coleslaw. The brisket was great. The chop brisket was horrible. Worse I've ever when I brought it to the attention of two different people they did nothing about it. Didn't try to make it right. Didn't offer me. Regular brisket. Nothing very disappointing. I'm giving a 4 star because food quality is inconsistent. Sometimes when I go, it's really great, but other times, I get a bunch of fatty pieces or watered down food. It's hit or miss. We are from California and have never been to a Van's Pig Stand. We both got the lunch special that was very reasonable for $7.70 each that comes with a choice of side and a drink. We each had a pig sandwich which was alright (sauce may need some work). I tried a side of potato salad which was pretty normal. My husband had the baked beans which were very uniquely good! I wish I tasted his (heheheee). We split a half order of their fried pickles to try that comes with ranch. And we both really liked them! The establishment was clean including the restrooms. This is really a shot out to the gentleman who made sure we had napkins and sauces at our table. I spilled my drink and he cheerfully cleaned up the mess and brought us more napkins. You order at the counter but they don't need a lot of attractions because the food says everything. I ordered a pig sandwich lunch special. It was outstanding. The meat was very tender and flavorful. It came with one side and a drink. I got the baked beans which were great. To cap off my lunch, I had to choose from a homemade dessert. Pecan pie, chocolate cake or carrot cake. What a great, local BBQ spot! This was recommended by someone I work with who lives in Oklahoma and I was not disappointed. You order up at the counter and they call your name to come get your food, so it's nothing fancy and the food comes out really quick. I got the BBQ brisket cheese fries and they did NOT disappoint. It was SO much food though so I only ate like a quarter of it. It's a heaping pile of curly fries, cheddar cheese, brisket, and ranch... Diet starts tomorrow, right?! They also have a bunch of condiments you can get by the drinks (a variety of different BBQ sauces, pickles, different relishes, etc.). I am a vegetarian but I am also a wife. My favorite dining companion often chooses the restaurant and I will find the best selection for me. This week a friend recommended this dining experience so we met there to try it out. I thought I was being persnickety because the only thing I was able to eat, they were out of...a backed potato. I opted to a salad and the greens were so tough they had gang tattoos. But I didn't say anything because my husband didn't say anything. Until we were driving home. He began to explain the importance of seasoning and tenderizing meats before cooking. Overcooking will not make it tender and sauce needs more than salt to make it taste great. If you haven't tried it in a while go back everything is as good as it was when Jerry was there. The one thing I wish his children would do is to put the steakhouse back in downstairs at the vans on Highland.
