Well, one review said the chicken fried steak was equivalent to a tv dinner. I 100% disagree. It was excellent. The mashed potatoes and green beans were fine too. Nice salad. Good tea. My friend has a fantastic pork chop that was moist and not cooked dry.What more could someone want from a local and cozy steakhouse? Stopped here for lunch. They have amazing specials. I think the salad and drink was 9$ and sandwiches and drink were 11$. The food was worth it. Very tasty. So many pies! I tried the peanut butter, but the choc cream pie and snicker pies looked amazing! The ambiance was what you'd think of for a western town on rte 66.. Saddle seats and branded counter tops. My autistic daughter unintentionally upset a group of customers, who complained to the manager. The manager confronted my wife's grandma about it and it upset my families experience of being there. Not child friendly and not autism aware, the manager seemed more concerned about the group who complained than making my family feel comfortable. Not a place to take disabled children. According to my husband the chicken fried steak dinner rates right up with a TV frozen dinner. Cream gravy passable, green beans good, mashed potatoes instant, salad fair ( crouton toast was good- best part of the meal) and the steak was cooked good but flavorless cube steak. Can't recommend and won't be back. You order at the counter, carry your drinks and silverware to table of your choice and meal is brought to you. When I read STEAKJOUSE I expect wait service and upscale atmosphere at least above a Golden Corral or Western Sizzler but it was clean and wait staff friendly. read more

This was hands down the BEST steak I've ever had! Easy to miss and only about a mile from the Oklahoma border on 69 (historic 66), this little gem is now one of my favorite restaurants in America. I have NEVER written a review and I travel a lot and eat at a lot of places so this should tell you something. If you are ever nearby, don't allow yourself to miss a meal here. The Ribeye was the best I've ever had. It covered the entire plate. I had to eat half of it just to fit the baked potato on there (served on a separate plate). The waitress was very friendly and we had ordered some homemade Apple pie (made fresh daily by the owners wife we found out) and she bugged us about getting ice cream on this thing. Well, after she mentioned it for the third time I gave in. Warm it up and put some ice cream on there for me I told her. BEST DECISION EVER. Ribeye was $16.99 but I would've paid $30 for that meal. Steaks are hand carved and all of there meat and produce is purchased locally. Nothing like a Kansas raised grass-fed steak that very well could have been mooing just 12 hours prior. I will drive 3 hrs out of my way for THIS hole in the wall. read more

I have been going to Van's Steakhouse since I was a little kid. I have always been served delicious food (chicken fried steak) that is some of the best in the 4-State area at great prices. It has a sentimental place in my heart because I would go there with my grandparents before they passed. Today, I was in shock. The food and prices were still great; however, the employee- /employer relations were terrible. The lady that fixed our drinks and served our food was very friendly. We didn't see she did anything wrong in serving us; however, the owners or management told her she had not served our food correctly. She brought it out on a tray and had it up against her body to balance it in an effort to keep from dropping it. When she went to the back, they fired her. She came out crying and very upset overall.. She came to our table and apologized. She said they had fired her for bringing our lunch out on a tray and for balancing it up against her body. I do NOT know the whole story. What I do know is that we were one of the last tables still occupied from the lunch rush. If they had waited maybe 15 minutes, they most likely could have terminated her employment when customers were not present. The owners or management came out at least twice and told her to leave. We left in a hurry. We were afraid the police would be coming in to remove her and we didn't want to get caught up in the ordeal. We also didn't want to cause the lady anymore embarrassment than what she was probably already feeling. She did tell us she had worked there a week and hadn't been trained. We do NOT know if this is true. We will not be returning. The business has been for sale. If it changes ownership/management, we will go back to one of our favorite steakhouses. read more

Pretty good stuff. I had the special which was chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a roll. Also comes with a salad which I could have done without. That was the only downside to the meal. It was straight from a bag and the dressing was served on the side from a packet. One of my favorite things about steakhouses is usually the ranch dressing. Not here. Other than that the meal was great. The chicken was juicy on the inside and the breading was delicious and crispy. We also got a piece of chocolate pie for dessert. Something was off it tasted very artificial and almost had a chemical taste. Still a solid 4 stars though and highly recommended. We will come back next time we are driving through. read more

What a find! We stopped through here for a late lunch with our kids and loved it! Best fried chicken I've had in a long time, clearly done in house with a light flaky breading. Hubs had their fried potatoes with a spiced steak w bacon, grilled onions, jalapeño crisps and more. Service was wonderful! We'll probably never be back through Baxter springs but I know where we'll eat if we do pass through! read more

This is an amazing small town steakhouse right on famous Route 66! They have really good steak tips and BBQ sandwiches. They have a number daily lunch specials. So many it would probably surprise you. Their lunch specials include a side and a drink. Beware the large drinks are super big but a great deal! Many of the workers have been there for years and I always feel welcome. I have never had a bad experience at Van's. Most dinners include a salad before hand and all their pies are made from scratch. If you are around this part of the country do stop in! read more
