Came on a random Tuesday night and didn't make a reservation. Had a party of 6, and it took them a few minutes to figure out where to seat us. Definitely make reservations if you have a larger party. Restaurant has a decent bit of bar top seating at an older looking bar. They sat us in a back room at a very nicely presented white table clothed table. We ordered the hot crab dip for an appetizer. It was delicious. 10/10 recommend. For my entree, I ordered the 8 oz filet medium rare with the brown sugar brussel spouts. I almost always have to season my steak, but this was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Carley was our server and she was the perfect mix of being attentive while also not being at our table too often. The place could be good. But the staff escalates issues with people on the outdoor area sidewalk and allow people to be disrespectful. Great place! We saw this place on yelp and tried it because it looked pretty decent. We were just passing through town. But we will definitely make a trip back this way to eat here again. Filet was by far the most fantastic thing. Hands down you should get the filet. Are you a ribeye man? Get the filet. The medallions were good but the filet was superior. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend the sweet corn casserole. It was sweeter than cake, sweeter than icing. This would have been ten star on if they went a more savory route. The twice baked potato was delicious incredible. And surprisingly, the Caesar salad was one of the best we've ever had. And we have traveled a LOT. Service was great, our server was super sweet- no issues there! Unfortunately, myself and one other person in our party ordered the scampi and it did not match up to the quality and flavorfulness of the other food in the slightest. You would think that at a price of $52 per dish it would be the best pasta ever, but that was sadly not the case. The shrimp and scallops were amazing, but the pasta came out with completely dry noodles. After being sent back to the kitchen, the returned dish tasted essentially like unsalted buttered noodles- similar to what you might prepare for a picky child. I have been here several other times and had a phenomenal experience (and all of the other food we received was awesome) so this may just be a one off. I felt uncomfortable complaining for a second time after the dish had already been sent back, so I just let it be and told the manager that came to our table that it was an improvement. Super bummed as this was a special celebration dinner that my family treated me to. read more

The service was polite and efficient, but not overly friendly, welcoming or talkative. I got their biggest Rib Eye Steak on the Menu along with their creamed spinach and sautéed mushrooms all portions were of decent size and quite tasty. I would definitely come back again. read more

What a great place this hidden gem is! When I called to make a reservation from the road, the owner Marsha answered the phone. When we arrived an hour later she seated us at a table in a side room. We were disappointed we didn't get one of the big wooden booths, but COVID-19 distancing and a busy Saturday night made most of those unavailable. The service was friendly and helpful. My Manhattan from the bar was perfect. The bacon as an appetizer was an amazing experience, not something you'd expect at that stage of the meal. But the best part of the show are the steaks. I had the KC strip that melted in my mouth, cooked perfectly as ordered, the same for my wife's filet. We shared the amazing creamed corn casserole, slightly sweet. My wife and I visited Wilders for her birthday. We made reservations for 1930 on a Saturday evening. When we arrived we got to our seats and were given menus. We had never been and needed to peruse the menu while we waited for our server. We both found the entree and sides we wanted and continued to wait for our server. After 20 minutes the hostess stopped and I told her we hadnt seen our sever. I also let her know of my displeasure since this is a pretty pricy place to eat. she apologized and said our server must have forgotten us. D e o n stopped at our table and asked if we'd been waited on and took our table without a question. After he arrived we had a wonderful experience. The food was amazing along with a free bread pudding that was unexpectedly brought to us. We will definitely return and more than likely give it 4-5 stars as I'm sure our experience was not the norm. read more

This place, with its storied past, fascinates me! Since 1929, Wilder's has been a special event celebration destination for couples and families. While many happy memories have been made here, it has an intriguing past of gambling and a mafia murder attempt. The Wilder's Art Deco Bar, back bar and wooden booths have been restored since their early 1940's origin. The Rat Pack and 1940 and 1950's hits waft through the air. Classic cocktails and libations are served here! Our dinner started with the appetizer recommendation of Bruschetta and Bacon. Simply put, they were fantastic! The Bruschetta was toasted focaccia bread drizzled with balsamic and served with a small bowl of diced tomatoes basil pesto for topping. Yummy! The bacon came highly recommended by our waitress. It was thick sliced and each slice (3) prepared a different way: blackened, spiced brown sugar and honey, and bourbon glazed. This bacon platter was served with fresh raw horseradish. Our table cut the thick bacon into edible bites. Please try the bacon with a small amount of the horseradish! Delicious!! This evening I ordered a bone in Elk Chop plated with a side of mashed potatoes and topped with a compound butter. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly! Delicious! My sister ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and was very disappointed. However, "when in Rome.....", so she regrets not ordering a Kansas steak! Everyone else in our group were pleased with their steak choices. This is a standard in Joplin. Probably the de facto "classy" establishment in town. They have great steak and pretty good other food. The steak fries are a little big for my taste but the steaks are well aged and cooked to order. The place is pretty darkly lit so can be hard to read the menu at night. They're pretty generous with their portions but sides are separate like most fancy steak places. The pesto pasta is pretty good here and the bread is really warm and fresh. If you need to take someone out for business or a fancy third date to impress this is likely the place to go here in town. read more

So, if you're a foodie and love to sit at the bar and chat it up with bartenders, this is NOT your place. Get a table instead or go somewhere else. The bartender will NOT speak or even look at you. You will be assigned a server. They also keep the serving trays on the bar top. So be prepared to jump every time they put one down or pick one up. We started with drinks and apps, but the experience was so uncomfortable that we skipped dinner. This is such an interesting building and I would have liked being able to explore more! This building was built in the early 1900's and is an historical landmark. As a restaurant, Wilder's is the oldest, continuously and locally owned restaurant in Joplin. Some of the other reviews mentioned an odor to the restaurant, and there is a light musty odor when you first walk in but I forgot all about it before even getting to the table. The decor is gorgeous, especially the detail on the ceiling and the bar, which is a focal point of the dining area. I had duck breast with a mushroom, potato, and sweet potato hash, topped with a fried egg and a side of truffle macaroni and cheese. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent. Our waiter was very well-balanced in his attention to our table. Attentive but not intrusive, which showed his skill and experience. The owner also stopped by our table to thank us for coming and to check on the quality of our meal. This is a higher priced locale, so be prepared for that, but I felt that it was worth it. Out-of-towner here. This is a great place to stop. Not cheap, but a real gem. I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars just because a couple dishes were so-so. The steak, Mac n cheese, side of mushrooms, and bread with honey butter were all fantastic. The Brussel sprout salad was kind of tough and didn't have much flavor. I thought the mashed potatoes were only okay also, but my partner thought they were really good. The waitress was very helpful and attentive.
