Don't be fooled because they're connected to a gas station. It looks like it from the outside, not on the inside. This was my first time. They're only 9 miles from my house but weren't on my radar because of the gas station. We went on a Saturday around 2:00, steady flow of customers. The first server was not engaging at all. I ordered a mango margarita on the rocks. He asked if I wanted a salt and lime rim. I said no, just lime. He brought me a lime margarita. Then went on to argue with me. Brought me a mango margarita within 30 seconds so not sure what I really got. Thankfully another server took our food order. Night and day different. Super nice and joked around with us. Food was good. Nothing extraordinary. The salsa was the highlight. read more

Stopped here passing through and this place was packed. I ordered a regular burrrto with pork and a fat burrito with steak. The fat burrito was huge big enough for 2 and delicious. Some of the best Mexican food in NWI. Always delicious, and prices are fair. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a lesser Mexican restaurant just because it's located next to a gas station. Their food is better than most local Mexican food establishments, and it's always consistent. Everything we've tried has been fantastic, but my personal favorite is the shrimp tacos. read more

We ordered to go since my boyfriend is working and the food was amazing, my boyfriend ordered the Mexican sampler which had skirt steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, grilled Pamela cheese and grilled onions and jalapeños, it also came with two servings of beans, rice, and lettuce with pico de gallo and avocados Cano. I had the carne asada which also came with skirt steak, grilled onions, jalapeños, rice, beans, lettuce, pico and avocado. Only thing I didn't like is the cashier asked if we wanted sauce, of course we do lol also they don't give us utensils so I had to ask her for some. Stopped in for lunch recently after a meeting up the road and found it to be very good, and very authentic. Its location, though, is what first caught my attention. Vaqueros is right next to a gas station, which immediately gave it cred. The place is clean and fairly neat with enough kitschy stuff to give it a genuine Mexican vibe. Chips, salsa and a menu arrived quickly, and my server wasn't far behind. The menu looked intriguing but, when I saw "Desayuno (breakfast) served any time," I knew what I was having. The difficulty was choosing between the Huevos Rancheros, the Chilaquiles, and the steak and eggs. Ultimately, I decided on the steak and eggs. When my server came back and I told him, I ordered the steak medium-rare and the eggs scrambled. He shrugged and walked away, which I thought was a bit odd. It took a little while to get my meal but I could see the kitchen was doing plenty of "to-go" orders (it was lunch time, after all) so understandable. When my meal came out, it was hot and quite tasty, but the steak was a bit of a surprise. It was a good-sized piece of what I assume was skirt steak, cut very thin. That's probably why I got a shrug: the kitchen probably cooks it one way, and that's what you get. No matter; it was nicely spiced and tender. The eggs were firm but not overdone, and the rice and beans were... well, typical rice and beans. At $8.99, I thought it was a pretty good bargain. The service, though, was a bit underwhelming. In addition to the shrug when I ordered - instead of explaining that it's a thin slab of meat so there's no such thing as "rare, medium, etc." with this - my server never checked back, and I had to hunt him down when I was ready to pay. Vaqueros has a $10 minimum to use a credit card so have some cash if you're eating light. All that said, if you're ever in the neighborhood and like (or LOVE) Mexican food, give it a try! If I'm in the area again, I know I'll be back, though I'll be sure to pack some extra patience. read more

I get the same thing every time I go there. It has gone up in price recently.... Went from being little chicken tenderloins to thin strips of chicken.... It's a 14$ meal now.... Not a fan of the wait staff. They aren't friendly at all. I'm not sure Ive seen a smile from any of them.... I decided to check this place out when I was in town one day. I really wanted to get a horchata but asked if they had birria. To my surprise they said they have it almost daily. So I ordered it along with a horchata. The horchata was so creamy and perfectly sweet. It's the perfect drink to get when you want something refreshing. The birria tacos are also surprisingly good. I've had them from so many places that have been kind of a let down. The sauce you dip the birria tacos in here is perfect! It's flavorful and definitely worth trying if you've never had. Beware that this place is closed on Mondays. Go figure that's when I'm normally craving it most I would definitely check this place out if you want to go somewhere with decent service and good food. read more

The food looks good. I don't know how it tastes, though. It was a little busy when I stopped in. They had plenty of ser ers. I sat myself (as advised). I even sat in a high visibility area, right in front of the register. Still, after having no less than 15 instances of servers walking by me, all while trying to make sure contact, gave up when I could not hey anyone to help me. I just had to leave. I am so happy that they got new owners because this restaurant is phenomenal. I always order a custom-made burrito and tacos. I request skirt steak. It's kind of a Chicago thing cause that's what Chicago uses and being from Chicago and let me tell you they make the most Wonderful skirt steak tacos, and burritos. They are out of this world ask for John. He gets it down exactly the way you want it and I am very appreciative of that and I am so glad that these new owners have turned this place around because it is a wonderful wonderful Mexican restaurant. The food is excellent. The service is fast and friendly. The prices are good. The portions are huge. But on top of that...last night, when I went to pay, I realized that I had left my wallet at home. No credit cards, no cash, nothing. I offered to leave my phone as collateral because I had to drive home and come back with money. Luckily, I live less than 10 minutes from the restaurant. They told me to take my phone, that they trusted I would return. Which I did. And they were super friendly about the whole thing. The food was delicious, and everything was a super good price. I got a skirt steak and eggs for $9.99. Skirt steak cooked impeccably. Pina colada was delicious. This is authentic as far as I can tell - another person at the table asked for pesole even though it wasn't on the menu and they had it. Service was very good and hospitable. Comfortable booths and great music - ambiance is exactly what you would expect of a Mexican restaurant. I'll admit I was worried it's by a gas station but fear not! My husband and I stopped here for lunch on our way from Ohio to Wisconsin. We love Mexican food and found this place on Yelp. It had excellent reviews so we decided to check it out. Maybe we're just spoiled by excellent Mexican food near our hometown, but we were disappointed. We thought the service and food were just mediocre. The general consensus seems to be that this is the best local Mexican, but if you're traveling from out of town and looking for authentic Mexican I'd keep looking. read more
