Visited the new Rios restaurant in New Buffalo today. With 40+ years of experience in eating at authentic Mexican restaurants in Pilsen and La Villita, I have to say I was impressed. We had a steak and a chicken burrito: aside from the more than adequate size, these were fresh, tasty, and actually made for two meals each (well, it depends on how hungry you might be;-)!). The medium salasa verde was just right as it pleasantly left a tingly flavor on your lips but didn't burn them. The ordering was swift, food came out fast (yet indicative of being prepared freshly in the back); the staff was friendly and, well, seemingly secure in the quality of their food, as they withstood my questions. Again, having had the benefit of eating authentic Mexican food prepared by the mamasitas in Latino neighborhoods, I believe to be a good judge of the quality of the food. If you eat in, the decor and vibe are pleasant - contemporary with sufficient cultural influences in its decor to "feel the Mexican" ... and there's a gift shop to boot with pretty cool stuff. This review reflects the new location at 603 E Buffalo St. We were glad to see that they're new location had seating. Well, we were not so impressed with the new location. You order at the counter or a kiosk, they hand you an in-house pager and when it flashes, you get your food....and for this they guilt you for a tip at the time of payment... On top of that, there is no fountain drinks, you fetch your own out of a cooler. I ordered a steak burrito and my wife ordered the taco bowl. Again, had to get your own utensils from the counter. After I took the foil off the burrito, it immediately began to un-wrap and fall apart into the foil...(for that I could have ordered the burrito bowl)....was very difficult to eat. The taco bowl was just ok. Bottom line, the food was far short of great....mediocre at best. Sorry, won't be coming back. read more

Rios Mexican Grill is one of those hidden gems you're so happy to stumble upon on a nice summer day. It's essentially a roadside taco stand, but don't let that fool you - the food is incredibly fresh and full of flavor. It feels very local and family-run, which adds to the charm. We visited last August during a family trip, and the fact that my mom, who usually avoids roadside food spots, was the one who recommended it says everything. We were honestly shocked (in the best way). Ordering is simple: you place your order, get a number, and wait for your food. There are benches available for seating, though no bathrooms, so it's good to plan accordingly. We ordered a variety of items - tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chips with salsa, and Jarritos, and were happy with everything. The portions were generous, the ingredients tasted fresh, and everything was well-prepared. I even enjoyed some leftovers the next day! I had gone to Rios' small roadside taqueria for years and was nervous about their move to their new larger location. No need to have worried. The friendly service and great food are unchanged. Having ample outdoor seating is great and my dog is still grateful for their little pup cups of chicken. Without a doubt Rios is the best value in New Buffalo. read more

Favorite: Nacho Bowl! I am so happy about their new location. Do not despair if The parking lot is loaded. They are very quick about their business, face-to-face or kiosk and this is good authentic Mexican. My favorite is the spicy pork, but I always get in arguments with people about the ground beef and the chicken. Cool new location. Clean bright and festive. Staff seemed friendly. The horchata and deserts looked yumm. The food ... ordered a burrrito bowl. Was no bueno! Steak was hard and chewy with grissle . The lettuce smelled like old dirty diapers . No flavor in the food. They use very spicy sauce to mask the poor quality of food. I recommend somewhere else for mexican cuisine read more

This is honestly some of the best Mexican food I've ever had anywhere. I've had the tacos and they're the absolute best. The burrito is absolutely amazing. They make chips the right way..deep-fried and the salsa is some of the best salsa I've ever had. it reminds me of salsa made at a place called Santiago in Chesterton. The guacamole is also some of the best guacamole I've ever had. I hail from Chicago and I could tell you right now that this food is better than most of the Mexican food I've had in the city. Pretty average Mexican food. I had a steak taco and chipotle chicken. A quesadilla was advised but all that cheese would upset my stomach so went with tacos. Nothing special. Good but not great. I would go back to try something else if I wanted Mexican food. read more

Quick turn around on a busy holiday weekend. Friendly staff and the food was solid at a decent value.

Bottom line: do yourself a favor and eat here. I ordered a steak quesadilla with onion, cilantro and cheese and let me tell you that it not only didn't disappoint... it's exceeded expectations and was fantastic. I could go back there for dinner and eat the same thing and be happy. The chips were great with the guacamole. I'd try the salsa next time instead of guacamole. Very friendly staff, too! Can't recommend enough! Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos because I couldn't wait to start eating it after I smelled it. read more

Next time, I'll be sure to get pictures, but we scarfed these down way too quickly! My family had the tacos - spicy pork, chicken and spicy chicken. They were incredibly tasty! The spicy hot sauce was also on point, as were the rice and beans. The chips tasted fresh and homemade. The service was quick. There are only a few picnic tables to eat at, but we didn't mind. I dare you to try to give this place your money. They won't take an order on the phone. Their website doesn't work. It really is good food if you can figure out a way to order it. Hot damn. Best Mexican food I've had in a loooong time. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Veggie tacos are just rice & bean tacos but I'm not sorry about it- they were magical. My daughter had the chicken nachos and said they were the best she's ever had. The guacamole and the chips were fresh and delicious. I wish we lived closer, I'd eat here all the time. We used to love the Rios is Grand Haven, but they moved out several years ago. We happened to be in the area of Rios on our way back from Chicago. It was a food truck and it was pretty busy.
