We have been a loyal customers at Vaqueros for more than 10 years. The food is always great as well as the staff. Recently.. and unfortunately.. I'd have to say the customer service has gone down hill. Hate to give that review but it's true. This place is "meh". Hubby & I visited after hiking the Lake McDonald area, & it was one of the only restaurants open on a Sunday afternoon during Glacier's off-season. Entrance: Probably the most confusing entrances to locate...door off the parking lot could use better signage! Chips & salsa: we only got one basket of chips and one small bowl of salsa to split. Extra chips are $2/basket and salsa is 75 cents per bowl. Queso: DON'T get the $8 queso. Rip off, lacking flavor. Tostito's is better, even cold. Entrees: Thankfully we made it in for the lunch special ($11-$13 per entree rather than the normal $15+ per entree.) Hubby got a burrito with chorizo - bland, chorizo was ground so fine it didn't have much bite to it. My colleague from High School (50 years ago!) were at Vaqueros bar, and when he entered the bar, he laid his car keys on the bar table. THIS gets better lol! As it turns out, a guy (who happens to be a regular, in this case, thankfully lol) is standing next to us. The restaurant has a couple of doors to enter into but no matter the door, they are quick to guide you where to check in for a restaurant table. Once you are sited, the waitress/waiter is quick to take your drink order. Menu is easy to ready and the portions are more than Texas size (big) . Husband and I shared a carne colorada with side order of guacamole and the night special was a peach margarita ($10). Coming from Texas, it was not spicy but it had taste. Margarita has a good kick. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and courteous with a warm smile all the time. I ordered the chicken taquitos with rice & beans. The beans were the tastiest part of my meal. The sauce they put over the taquitos ruined them. They were soggy and it tasted just like plain tomato sauce. My husband ordered two shredded beef tacos (hard shells) and a cheese enchilada . The meat in the tacos was flavorless and they were so soggy that by time he got to the second taco it had to be eaten with a fork. The rice had no flavor and he also agreed that the beans were good. The cheese enchilada sauce tasted like Campbells tomato soup. The portion sizes were good and the prices were not bad. We are spoiled with great Mexican food that we have in Arizona. read more

My boyfriend and I went in recently as we do every so often and I ended up getting food poisoning. I know it was from Vaqueros because it was the only thing I ate that day. Hours later I became the sickest I have ever been in my life. Unable to keep water or pedialyte down. After a full day of nonstop projectile vomiting I went to the ER where they gave me two IVs, did extensive blood work and sent me home with medication. 5 days later and I have no appetite and can hardly stomach anything even when forcing myself to eat. My assumption is that it was from their rice. My boyfriend had only a few small bites of rice whereas I had a significant amount more than him. We shared the carne asada plate. A day or so later he ended up getting sick as well just not as extreme as myself. The restaurant was promptly made aware and we were offered an apology. I highly recommend eating elsewhere unless you would potentially like to pay a visit to the ER, miss several days of work and completely lose all of your appetite and ability to stomach anything! read more

Since Columbia Falls is such a small town I expected subpar Tex Mex. But I was pleasantly surprised. The food was really good - I'd say it's your average Tex Mex which isn't a bad thing. I got a burrito and it was massive - I took half of it home. My friend got the street tacos which came with a side of salsa. I loved that salsa (it was different than what came with the chips). It was spicy and sweet at the same time. I ordered a jalopeno marg and was pleasantly surprised. You could actually taste the jalopeno but it wasn't too spicy. If I ever visit Columbia Falls/GNP, I'd definitely visit Vaquero's! It was a nice switch up from burgers/American at most of the other restaurants near by. read more

They claim to care about your allergies, however I walked in and was very clear about my cilantro allergy. The server kept saying, "I don't think it has that in it. " I explained that I really needed her to ask her kitchen staff about the allergies before I order. She couldn't have been more bothered, proceeding to talk about me to the other waitress while laughing. She came back and told me to order the queso because it didn't have cilantro but the salsa did. I explained once more that if there was cilantro in there I would be sick. She said it doesn't. You'll see in photo I found cilantro after second bite. They don't accommodate for allergies and you'll be lucky if they even bother asking the kitchen. Allergies to food are serious, and this place doesn't care. Again..food is really consistently flavorful! We drive 45 minutes just to eat here and they always recognize us and treat us like family. We had the chili verde with a side of roasted jalapenos. Always tasty and I never finish so I can have it with eggs the next day. My friend had shrimp in a creamy white sauce. This dish was good, but onions were on the crunchy side which took away from the flavor. I would ask that they carmalize them next time. We recently traveled to the Glacier/Whitefish area for a weekend and saw the good reviews for Vaqueros. It was a few minutes outside of Whitefish in Columbia Falls, but definitely worth the drive. First of all, Columbia Falls is pretty much just East Whitefish. It only took 10 minutes to drive there, and the road has gas stations and restaurants on it the whole way, so you don't even feel like you have left Whitefish. But I digress. Vaqueros the restaurant was fantastic. I ended up having the Chicken en Mole. There should probably be an accent in there somewhere but whatever. My table companions got enchiladas, plates, etc. all happy patrons. Probably my only critique would be the menu is gigantic, which, I admit, is a total nitpick. I forgot what was on the first page by the time I was on the fourth. And that didn't even include desserts, drinks, etc. That could probably be paired down to three or even two pages. I had dined here before and gave a good rating. They have recently renovated the place and the bar area looks fantastic. With that said I ordered shrimp fajitas today...emphasis on shrimp...not much. My husbands tacos were cold and my portion of shrimp small. We were not impressed. It was $37.50 for the fajitas, four street tacos and a beer. We will try them again in the future, hoping they can up their game.
