Last year, I catered from Vari's (fried chicken/peach cobbler/greens/mac and cheese/homemade dressing/cornbread/and yams) for co-workers visiting our Chicago office from Poland. A couple of weeks ago, while visiting their office in Poland, I was surrounded by a group of seven people who were still raving about that meal! I actually like the food here, but I changed my rating because my oxtails have been TRASH on my last 3 visits. As much as I pay for oxtails they need to be fresh and perfect! I cant get jiggy with old spoiled bogus oxtails! Thats a no no. When they correct this, I'll let yall know! Their fried catfish is the best I had ever eaten. Portions are much bigger than I expected. The day we went, they were out of Lamb chop lollipop and red beans and rice. We had fish, pork chops and ribs. All deep fried. My fav is the fish. The draw back I see is there are no non fried main dish options. The side dishes are good. Small and close seating area but really good food. Parking open lot. Kind staff. Alcohol served. I ordered oxtail, Mac n cheese, red beans and rice, asparagus, and spiked lemonade. The tequila lemonade you can taste your alcohol. Standard 16oz cup. The oxtail I had 3 hefty oxtail that were very tender. My Red beans and rice flavorful but I needed a pinch more rice, the Mac n cheese was tasty and very creamy. The asparagus lemon garlic flavor was subtle but still hearty asparagus stalks. The corn bread is sweet but has a distinct flavor that I can't think of right now (maybe orange) but yummy. I ordered a peach cobbler eggrolls to go. I tasted it and it was great not too sweet. I do believe I will be back. Cost is worth the flavor, portion, and side options. I felt welcomed not to mention. I wanted the shrimp appetizer which is ten shrimp, the guest next to confirmed that they are delicious, but I thought it would be less shrimp and the oxtail always catch my attention. The peach cobbler egg roll tasty really good not too sweet. One person easy 50.00 tab with drink, meal plus extra side, dessert, and tip. Not too bad for me. I also had some left over. read more

First time trying lamb chops and this place set the bar HIGH. They were cooked to perfection tender, juicy and full of flavor! The real stars for me were the sides. Greens and cornbread were top tier. This the type of food that sticks with you. While out west recently, I stopped by the new location for Vari's. Now they have a dedicated space, unlike the shared space before. Ordered for a proper sit-down and glad that I did. The catfish still scores high marks. The macaroni and cheese did not disappoint. The candied sweet potatoes were just as good without being too sweet or unsweetened. The collard greens were a highlight and even better with the corn muffin crumbled in them. The service can't be beaten. You can go to some places and end up feeling like you were not wanted. Not here. Recognizing that there were other customers behind me, I placed my order and took a seat. But when it came time for food to arrive at the table, they made sure everything was to my satisfaction before I got started digging in. Unfortunately, we were so excited when the food arrived that we forgot to take any pictures lol! Everything was super fresh and made to order. The catfish, chicken wings, and fries were cooked and seasoned exactly how we like it! The cornbread and sweet potatoes were the standouts for me... I'm a sucker for sweet things though! The greens were also excellent and had a nice little kick without being overpowering. The only thing we weren't a fan of was the macaroni and cheese. It didn't seem like it was cooked long enough. I really would have loved to give this black owned business a full 5 stars. The only reason it isn't receiving 1 star is due to the absolutely delicious taste of the meal. The space is extremely small - with 5 tables for seating for approximately 25 people total (and that's being generous). The workers were friendly, however service was EXTREMELY SLOW!!! I was a party of 1, and waited over 90 minutes for a fried rib dinner meal. Several other guests at different tables had to select new side dishes because they ran out of certain food items. There was no offered compensation for the wait or the inconvenience - which was bad for business. There was a group of people who tracked from out of town to visit and now will never get that experience. I'm willing to try them one additional time, with hopes that there will be some improvements. read more

Was on the area with friends from Hawaii and they wanted soul food and looked on Yelp and we choose correct. Service was amazing spoke with owner and the whole made me feel like me and my party of six were like family. Then you add on that the food was like my mom made down to the kool aid. The catfish did come out a little before the wing plate. The Mac and cheese was the highlight along with the fish and chicken seasoning (both different).
