Another day, another Brooklyn cafe! My friend & I have been wanting to try this place for a while now! When we walked in, the girl at the counter was super friendly! We both ordered iced cappuccinos & they were ready pretty quick! The cappuccinos were half filled (with milk & all) which was a bit confusing! There's a section where you can add more milk & straws; so I added a bit more oat milk - thought it was super cool that plant based milk wasn't an extra charge bc some places will literally charge an extra $1. Sadly, there was no cinnamon :((( The coffee was average, there's some outdoor seating that we took advantage of since it was a sunny day; however random people kept sitting there who weren't customers (probably from the park) which was a bit strange! read more

The good: Seems like nice coffee shop with outdoor seating and self serve condiments bar. The bad: So right after a Christmas mass at the local church we decided to stop in and get a hot cup of coffee for the road. As we walked in one of my family members said "Merry Christmas" to the only guy who was working behind the counter making coffee. He then looked at us with such a disgust on his face and said "what?" so again my family member with a full smile on their face and full of holiday spirit said Merry Christmas, the guy mumbled something then replied Merry Christmas with such a hassle and went back to pouring coffee. Talk about killing the holiday spirit!!! The place was definitely not packed or busy as there were only 2 people waiting for their coffee order. I've tried this place multiple times since I live so close, but it consistently has the worst coffee.

I love this location! My only issue is that I don't know when they close. The hours on Yelp & Google are incorrect, they do not close at 9pm. They should update the hours so I can visit, too many times I've stopped by after work & they were closed. Other than that, excellent service. Excellent coffee & tea. Went in for 2 cortados, I was very shocked when I asked the woman at the machine to add the rest of the oat milk to the coffee. She said that's not the way a cortado is made and threw the rest of the oat milk in the garbage. Absolutely disgusting! I have been coming here for years from when they were across the street and now you have lost my business. I've been sort of disappointed with my "hipster coffee" experience in NYC this visit, but my iced latte from Variety was delicious AND had the right amount of ice so that it stayed "iced" the whole time I was drinking it. I love the coffee and pastries here. I really appreciate that the baristas take the time to get to know their customers and seem committed to making this place a neighborhood gem. I have never had a problem here, but I think it's important that customers be mindful of the fact that service workers are keeping this city together. The way you treat your barista is a measurement of your character even in normal times. If you're complaining about someone seeming a little stressed out while providing an essential service in a pandemic you need to check yourself. The people who work at this location are so dedicated to their jobs, to expanding their knowledge of coffee, the industry, and to providing quality service in a time of great stress. What a dang treat that we can get a delicious drink made with intention for us in a time when connection can be dangerous. They are risking their lives to make you coffee.. if you're not seeing how heroic that is, I don't know what to tell you. They deserve to be full people who experience a spectrum of emotions and feelings. If you need a pretty girl to smile at you for your coffee to taste good, I can promise you it's not about the coffee. Variety on Driggs is pretty darn good. Not perfect, but pretty darn good. What I would never change: Stumptown beans, perfect temperatures on hot beverages without fail, simple menu without all that goofy stuff that may as well not have coffee in it, that one guy who is maybe the owner and therefore really quite nice. What I wish would change: lack of vegan pastries, closing super early, "meh" staff members who just don't make me wanna go there (especially in the morning). Moral of the story, if you don't feel like crossing on to the south side of Meeker, this is the place to be in Eastern Greenpoint, but if you have it in you, head over to Woodpoint & Withers. read more

A smaller version of their Graham stop sister store, this one is even better in my opinion, somehow because it's smaller. After enjoying a shot of espresso, I munched down on a bran & fruit muffin while chatting with Cameron about coffee and what makes a good cafe. Cup quality. Made-to-order. Expert Barristas, good roasts. All these things were discussed in great detail, meanwhile a cute patron walks in with her dog, who proceeds to make fast friends with me. The place is also in the nether-lands, not as in the wonderful but tiny dutch country in Europe, but rather a far flung and according to google lesser or lower in position area. That of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Without a bicycle, this little outpost may not be particularly accessible, but that just makes it all the more charming. Plus it's right across the street from the park. Kevin and Justin were sympathetic and waived it off telling me to just come back settle up next time I'm around. I enjoy the coffee. I wouldn't say it's the best in NYC by any capacity, but that judgement really depends taste bud to taste bud. Different strokes... However, I will say that the customer service is like "a box of chocolates... You never know what you're gonna get." The women are mostly friendly, sometimes stand-offish. I have noticed that when this particular one male works there, the vibe is more negative. Maybe this guy is a manager because he doesn't seem to work as hard as the typical female barista and has a bit of a snarky attitude --- surprisingly apparent even when we all are "masked up." For example, they control the amount of people in the shop for COVID regulations but, from the outside entrance, it is really hard to see if there are four or less customers inside. So when someone accidentally walks in without noticing the mandated customer head count, this male employee shoos them out, follows up with eyerolls and looks for reactions from his employees. I've seen this many times. We sometimes can't SEE from that side door perspective... also, pretty unprofessional. This is a prime real estate coffee shop --- adjacent to McGorlick Park where many families and dog owners stop before their strolls. So, they will always maintain the foot traffic. But the overall vibe isn't welcoming. At times they seem annoyed at the amount of people in line. Kind of a bummer -- seems like that trickles down from the top/managerial positions. Not saying I need overly friendly smiles and welcomes when I buy a coffee, but I'd rather support the friendly mom and pop coffee shop a little more towards McGuinness Blvd. read more

I give this little coffee joint five stars for the excellent tea (I'm not a coffee drinker but it's Stumptown) and baked goods, which are sourced from a local bakery. The berry-bran muffin is especially noteworthy. The overall ambiance is pleasing -- interesting music, tiny seating area but comfy, and wonderful rotating wall art from local artists! Still, I'm giving this two stars because of the ridiculous hours. Variety opens at 8:00 AM and closes at 4:00 PM -- and that's when they DO open on time. Come ON people. What's with that? If you're not going to open early to capture the going-to-work crowd, you can at least stay open later for the evening post-work crowd. read more
