For reference purposes, I ordered a small BBQ pizza and the hot wings. These are items that I have ordered hundreds of times across the US throughout my years of business travels and this was by far the worst pizza and wings I have ever eaten. The hot wings were burnt and so dry that I could only compare them to what I would guess dog food to taste like. As for the BBQ pizza, it felt and tasted like a mash of non-identifiable ingredients with a sickly sweet after taste. Obviously, others have had good experiences with this restaurant based on their other reviews which is why I ordered from them but I cannot imagine those positive reviewers received the same items that I did, made the same way. Saying all that, I don't want to discourage you the reader from trying this place if you are really interested in checking it out but maybe just avoid the wings and bbq pizza read more

I have been here many times and it's been quite pleasant. However this weekend was not. Went in on a busy game day and as expected was very busy. The staff gave little attention to the customers. No updates on wait time, no apologies. People were just fending for themselves. I saw at one point a person wipe down his own table, and grab his own menus to seat him selves and his friends! Very understaffed, and the staff was very overwhelmed. There was no one in the bar area helping the customers there, and for about a good 20 minutes there was no one at the front greeting people coming in. When We finally were seated, I already wanted to leave at that point. Fast forward to the food. Calzone was over cooked, and dry! Salad was ok, and no staff came back to see how we were doing, and ask if we wanted refills. We also had to get up and and go to the front to pay for our dinner since no one ever asked if we wanted our check. Please get more staff help during game days/weekends! Not only was it very unpleasant with our experience, but also unpleasant hearing everyone else's complaints. Giving three stars, only because I do love Varlamos, and this was the first bad experience. Hoping next time we visit on a game day is much better, or Stars will start disappearing. read more

I came to varlamos pizzeria hungry and ready to watch the NCAA men's basketball finals with a couple buddies of mine, and I left with a full belly and complete satisfaction with how the game went. The caesar salad was an excellent way to warm up for the main meal of the evening. When the meat calzone was put in front of me I didn't quite know how to tackle it. Once I started however, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The calzone was nothing short of spectacular. It was a lovely evening with amazing tasting food. Was a great meal and time out. Service was good and understanding of special orders. Served nice and hot. Gave a 4 instead of five because the appetizers were served to us then got salad and then meal in the span of 5 min or so. Point being was no time in the middle of servings. Needed to space the apps and the meal out more so then people don't get everything at once. But other wise was a great meal, lots of flavor and soul. If you are in seattle or around the area you should come take a stop by Varlamos for a nice lunch or dinner. read more

Whenever I visit Seattle, I always have at least one dinner at Varlamos. For $10 you get a football-sized calzone (make-your-own with 3 ingredients) and a salad. Note: the sausage is spicy! heartburn beware! Seating is plentiful but this pizza spot is favorite to the locals and frequents large groups of youngsters (7-12 yr olds) so you may want to try a reservation if you have a large group. First a comment on the pizza: Pizza quality is one of those things that people can't seem to find a universally agreed-upon scale for. Some people love only NY-style thin crust pizzas, some love only thick crust pizzas, and some love only Chicago-style deep dish pizzas. Some people only like pizzas jammed with traditional Italian toppings, and some only like wood-fired gourmet pizzas with esoteric toppings. So no pizza place will be everyone's cup of tea, no matter how good the pie is. That said, Varlamos is my absolute favorite pizza place in Seattle. The crusts are relatively thick, and the toppings on the pies I get are plentiful (I stick to traditional Italian meat and veggie combinations) and mixed with a goodly amount of yummy cheese. Another of my favorite menu items here is the garden sub -- a great grilled eggplant sub on a crispy baguette roll. This isn't a bland, health-food tasting option; the seasonings and wine-vinegary sauce make my mouth water just typing this. And it comes with a nice-sized Italian side salad that is a perfect complement to it. No other reviewer so far seems to have mentioned it; so I recommend you try it out some time. Also, as a few other people have said, the owner seems to be a nice guy and is friendly to customers. I've had a few nice chats with him, including back when I first started going there and he couldn't have recognized me as a repeat customer yet. To me, that's the way to run a restaurant. read more

TERRIBLE service...didn't even leave a tip because we NEVER saw our waiter!!!! The calzone was amazing, however, but the service was so terrible, I can't rate this place any higher. The waiters were rude, unresponsive, and literally dropped the plate on the table with NO interaction at all. Stopped in for dinner tonight and got the all meat pizza. Honestly can't remember what the actual menu title is but man it was good. Sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and meat balls. It's true that I am on my way to the ER with a clogged artery, but I have a giant grin plastered on my face so it's all good. Serious note though, I really do love the deeper dish crust style of their pizza. It's amazing and not super greasy. I think some of the better Chicago style pizza I have had in Seattle. I questioned the server about it, as I was certain this was an error, and he stated that's their policy as I technically had four different toppings. The food was amazing! Great portions for a great price! I would go back in an instant. There calzones are so good. My friend got one and I had a fight and I wanted the whole thing. I got one of their pasta dishes it came with bread which was a nice surprise to most restaurants which do not read. Their portions were so large and amazing. I brought home leftovers for my sister and she was so excited. The waitstaff was incredible. We had a server, Wassily. He was great. He brought all of our food so quickly and gave us our drinks with a smile. Our bussers, Jack and Rachel, we're great. They helped us find our table. And made us feel very welcome and varlamos. We were staying overnight at children's hospital up the road for the weekend and decided pizza was for dinner. We had never been here before so I called in my order ahead and when I got there, they had entered in the wrong pizza (which wasn't a big deal). They quickly started on the correct one and gave me my pizza free of charge and apologized for the mixup. You don't find customer service like this very often. It's not the fact that the pizza was free, it was that they were quick to fix the issue without any questions asked. The pizza was FANTASTIC and was exactly what we wanted. I worked at VP for 3 years in college and I wish every restaurant was run this way! Kosta is an amazing owner - gets to know his customers, and makes sure they get great service every time. Everyone thinks it's Italian, it's not!!! It's Greek! Awesome tzatziki. Calzones are definitely the most popular item on the menu. The pizza is it's own style - REALLY think and piled with toppings. Varlamos is great. We live nearby and have been going to Varlamos for 8 or 9 years. The food is consistently good - the salads are super fresh (they cut them there daily, none of that pre-cut bagged stuff that wilts on your plate) with house made dressings, great Greek pizza, pastas, and - wait for it - legendary calzones. I grew up in Spokane, home of Pete's, The Calzone King. When I moved to Seattle to go to UW, I never thought I'd see the likes of Pete's calzones again. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when Pete's expanded to Seattle and set up shop on Roosevelt in the early-mid 90's, but then they closed a few years later (I am still wondering why). After that, every calzone I'd try at another place just didn't measure up...doughy crust, no ricotta...the worst part was that places wouldn't bake the sauce inside the calzone, but would serve it on the side instead. This is just weird. And forget my favorite topping/filling, broccoli - I just gave up on that. Enter Varlamos. someone had told me about their Monday night special - a calzone and a salad for $7 or something - so my husband and I decided to check it out since it was close by. The place had a rally laid back atmosphere, and was really busy with neighborhood clientele - families, kids' sports teams, groups of college students, retirees. We sat down and opened the menu, and there it was - broccoli. I knew this was a good sign. We both got the Monday special - my calzone with broccoli and ricotta, of course, and his with sausage, onion, and green pepper. The salad that comes with the special is full sized, and yep, the calzones are, as advertised, football sized. And with sauce on the inside! It filled the void that the closed Pete's on Roosevelt left in my heart. We've been back many, many times since then (we went every Monday for a couple of years), and I've tried the pasta and pizza too (both good). The wait staff is pretty much all UW students, and the owner is always there, either helping out in the kitchen or chatting with customers. Every once in a while we'll get a flaky server (usually a girl whose sorority sisters have decided to come visit her at work), but the microbrews on tap and great food make up for it. We have a daughter now, and she loves Varlamos too...did I mention they have a good kids menu and a basket full of Dum Dums up front? read more

When they refused to seat us after an hour of being there due to our entire party had not shown up yet, we saw your restaurant next door and proceeded to go over there. The restaurant was absolutely hopping, we were seated quickly and served with top-notch service and amazing food. I Had Your Spinach salad which was the best I've ever had. Went here on a very busy Thursday night. I am 50/50 on the food. The pizza is amazing. The pasta options are not great abs I wouldn't order them again. Pizza, however, is on point. We order three different pizzas and all were worthy of a return. The Nina, The mobster and meat lover all delicious. I got the "clucker" I think, which had chicken, roasted red peppers and onions in it - delicious! My friend got the meat calzone and seemed pretty happy with it. I'll most likely go back on another Monday night to take advantage of this deal again, because I'm in college, and the food to price ratio is in my favor. I noticed that the place was mostly full of other college students and families. This is my favorite pizza in Seattle. To start I had a salad that had grated mozzarella on top. Great! I love the #2 with pepperoni , sausage, and mushrooms. My wife had the calzone. I've been craving pizza for at least a month now and this place is right next to my gym so I decided to treat myself. I ordered a custom mini pizza with pepperoni, capers, and black olives. It came with a side house salad. The Italian dressing tasted homemade and I really liked it. The issue was the pizza. It was too salty, and I don't think it was the capers because I tried them off the pizza and they tasted mild. Maybe it was the combo of the ingredients that made it salty. I've gone to Varlamos on Mondays for years, and have always gotten the calzones (my favorite is the sausage+mushroom+roasted red pepper). It was delicious too - my husband actually likes the pizza even more than the calzone, so I think he's going to start getting pizzas even on Mondays.
