I've been coming to Varlamos regularly for about 8 years and it remains one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. The food is all made from high quality scratch ingredients and the portions are huge. I've probably had everything on the menu and never once been disappointed. I keep wanting to like this place but I don't and here's why: the service is particularly robotic. The servers are entirely impersonal, pretend to be friendly ("hi, guys!"), and barely look at you when they are obligated to ask about your meal. The food is okay but really nothing special for the price. Then there are the ever present TVs which dominate the wall space instead of Italian photos. I left Seattle in 2011. I missed this place so much. This was a childhood memory of mine, that is not only still here - the food is still the same, the seating is still the same. Everything is still the same. I went back in 2016 and I will go back again year after year until they decide to make this place a Starbucks. I love it. To me, their claim to fame has to be the Build-Your-Own Calzones. You build your own calzone, and they put heaping helpings of ingredients in a large, delicious bread that smells as good as it tastes. My hope is that they stay here indefinitely and never change their menu or the quality of their ingredients, because I have been going here for something like 20 years, and I would like to be able to continue to go here every time I visit for another 20 years. read more

If mount Olympus had a restaurant, it would be Varlamos. If JC himself needed a last super, it would be at Varlamos. It is a classic neighborhood joint that changes just enough. Most menu items come with a salad. It's pretty standard for a salad (ask for olives if you are feeling up for it), but come here enough and you won't be able to get enough of it. Portions are good enough to take a portion home the next day. Entrée wise can't really go wrong with any of the pastas, the calzones fill you up and this pizza hits the spot. After making blueberry pancakes and going to the zoo on a summer day with Phoebe H., Lovina H., Faith H., Sherwin L., Melissa Y., and Kevin C., we ate dinner together. Originally, we had planned to eat Red Mill Burgers, but it was CLOSED. Kevin C. suggested that we come here to eat instead. They had some kind of calzone deal here. I rarely eat calzones, but i really like them. They're kind of like pizza pockets, or entire pizzas folded over. After looking over the menu, I decided on 'the clucker' calzone. It is filled with marinated chicken, roasted red peppers, onions, and mozzarella. I decided to add some stuff into my calzone. I added mushrooms, spinach, and artichokes. My other friends also ordered calzones. The calzones took a while to cook, but that's expected because it's like waiting for a pizza to cook in the oven. Although, we received house salads before they came. When the calzones came, I was in complete shock. They were HUGE. It seemed like a large pizza folded over, and slapped on a platter. I cut into my calzone, and the filling oozed out onto my plate. The dough was bland, and kind of dry. The filling was alright though, cheese was all nice and melted. They were scarce with the chicken, not acceptable. They were generous with the other items though. I don't know if I'd come back here, it's iffy...If I do come back, I'd probably order the hummus with pita, spinach salad, old country calzone, pesto pizza, Mediterranean pizza, and eggplant parmesan. read more

Great pizza, gigantic calzones, SPECTACULAR salads and a great layed-back atmosphere. The service can occasionally be slow, but nothing to complain about. As far as taste goes, if you come in here looking for world class italian cuisine, you're going to be disappointed. This probably one of the better pizza pls d's I've been to in a long while. The atmosphere is typical for a college area eatery but it's supper clean ( and the floors aren't sticky). My wife and her parents felt right at home. Cormick was or waiter and he was on the spot with drinks and food. Ask for him and you'll see what I mean. Perfect pizza pie. Varlamos has been on a downhill slide...years ago - I loved it, ate here often. Of late, there isn't enough staff. And they aren't particularly nice either. In the past, it was busting with college kids waiting tables - they clearly aren't hiring enough staff now. The past two times I've gone, the waiter barely says anything & then at the end - when he drops off the check - he finally is pleasant (to secure his tip). It's hard to even get a glass of water. I don't like feeling like putting someone out by spending my $ at their restaurant. read more

It was just uninspiring to sit there and hope that someone will eventually come take our order. My 2nd complaint was that the pepperoni was hot. Like spicy hot. The food at Varlamos was okay but not amazing. I liked the chicken parmesan a lot, but was disappointed in the pizza and calzones. The pizza dough is the thick, doughy kind, and the toppings feel like they're just sitting on top of the cheese. The flavors don't really meld together well and the crust got kind of soggy (not sure if this was due to the green bell peppers or mushrooms). The calzone was huge but, again, the flavors didn't really seem to blend together... it was just not that good. Interestingly, the pepperoni on the pizzas here is larger, thinly cut slices of sausage rather than the small, fat pieces you find on most pizzas. I liked it. Varlamos does have the "friendly neighborhood restaurant" feel though, and it's comfortably casual. If I return I'll probably stick to the pasta dishes. (The sandwiches look good too.) read more

The only reason this place gets any stars at all is that the food is pretty good, but nothing special. I can name at least three way better pizza places. Their service is THE WORST I've ever had. It's the third time (and the last) I come here and it's always been the same. Actually, as I sit here and wait for my server to so much as bring me a water, I have had time to wait long enough to get pissed off enough to even want to write a bad review AND he still is no where in sight and I'm almost done writing this. So, in a nutshell, don't bother coming here because it's really not worth the wait. However, if you do pick up, they have super good pizza :) So unless you have a lot of time to waste waiting for high school/college students who could care less to serve you, then take out is your best bet. read more

I was super craving a calzone. And this place is close to my work, so my boyfriend and I decided to try it out for our weekly lunch. I am kinda sad that we did, because the calzone wasn't very good. Sure, its HUGE. But not good. We were smart and got one to share since neither of us wanted to be in an afternoon food coma(on a side note, when are we gonna implement siestas? Seriously, I am so jealous of the Spanish!) One calzone with a salad though was more than enough for both of us. But like I said, it wasn't a good calzone. It had some meat, and cheese and sauce, but every time we cut into it, everything fell out and made a huge mess. This place seems to be popular with the locals in Laurelhurst, everyone seemed to know each other. And apparently some people have a "table" they are there so much. It almost made me think it was some sort of mob place. But then I remembered I was in Laurelhurst. Needless to say, we won't be back. No matter how much I am craving a calzone! read more

Varlamos serves calzones that are literally the size of footballs. They are damn tasty too! If you are hungry enough it is possible to take down one of these delicious, doughy beasts, but highly unlikely (coming from a big eater). They also offer some very good pasta dishes with what seems to be homemade sauces. I believe they are homemade because you can almost always see the owner back in the kitchen that looks out onto the main dining area. Varlamos is great for groups and family because it is spacious and not too quiet. It's definitely a neighborhood joint though because being in Laurelhurst makes it hard to get to off the freeway coming from north or south and even more difficult coming from ballard/fremont/greenwood/magnolia. read more

Nice neighborhood joint whose staff is composed entirely of college students as far as I can tell. The calzone's are huge, taste just fine and come with a DELICIOUS house salad. I had the spaghetti with marinara sauce and meatballs yesterday. It was so salty it was barely edible, I couldn't even bring myself to take a third bite. I'm not one to send back a 12$ meal so I brought it home and tossed it with half a package of freshly cooked spaghetti today and it's finally palatable. Not sure how this place gets 4 stars... In general, their food reminds me of something my grandparents would have enjoyed, before they both died. Tasteless, old fashioned, out of date. 1994 is calling and wants their pizzeria back... Everything could use more seasoning & a complete overhaul. The salad is a nasty iceberg concoction that only those old "greasy spoon" places serve. The tomato sauce is bitter, under seasoned, and semi watery. The calzones are created out of some seriously plain dough that seems more appropriate as a French bread roll. The only thing that added any moisture to the dough was a tiny smear of what I'm assuming was garlic butter - right down the middle and not found anyplace else on the calzone. That was a total fail. Varlamos is a great place to grab tasty cheapish pizzas in the udistrict. I have gone here twice so far and the service has been good. The pizzas are so goooood. The cheese is melty, the crust is crunchy. They load the pizza with toppings and put the meat under the cheese which I enjoy. I have had the terminator pizza (basically a gyro on pizza) and made my own three topping pizza. A small is big enough to share with two people, anything bigger and you'll have leftovers. The pizzas range from $10-23 depending on the size and the toppings. Great for families or a casual date night! read more

Let's start with parking. Not much parking for the establishment, but wife and I parked in the back. So it wasn't that bad. Friendly family oriented pizzeria. Once the wife and I were seated I started to notice either the manager or owner was pretty popular with the customers that came in, which was really nice. The order didn't take too long to come out which was acceptable considering it was nice and warm. I ordered a calzone that was amazing. Moist, soft, bread and not too saucy, cheesy, or meaty. Perfect combination of ingredients. Wife had a traditional lasagna, which was a little salty for her liking but not terrible. Oh yeah one last thing worth mentioning was they were supposed to close at 10PM and kept their doors open for the family members and children coming from a baseball game. I gave this restaurant five stars because I live down the street and have been going here for over a decade. It is one of my favorite places to get dinner with family and friends. Something about their pizza cheese is perfectly chewey, greasy, and always in abundance. They also don't skimp on the kalamata olives. The salads are good because they have an amazing house itialian dressing. I also like the mozerella they use. The ceaser isn't half bad either. I highly recommend their myzithra(sp) pasta, mozzerella sticks, cheese bread, pizza(puffy style crust) and calzones. Not too sure about happy hour food though, I ordered the cheese fries and have definitely had better... As for drinks we always order manny's, mac and jacks, or they have really great root beer on tap. Be forewarned the place is always packed on weekend nights especially after an L-hurst little league game. We order take-out from here SO often that I'm not even sure it's fair to say but double check your order because they frequently forget something or what have you. read more

I went to Varlamos recently for a work-related dinner get-together. Overall I thought the quality of food was good. The pizzas were a little salty and greasy but I liked the deep-dish style and crispy crust. Overall I prefer the style and cheese of Luciano's but I would come back here again. The mozzarella sticks were standard, as was the salad. The hummus was actually pretty good - super garlicky. Didn't think they made it themselves though so probably out of a container. Considering I've been working in the area for a little over 4 years, this was my first visit. My department had won a Halloween contest at work and eating here was part of our prize. Our table ordered a meat pizza and a veggie. The pizzas were ok, nothing great. I prefer thin crust, light on sauce and cheese and the pies here are thick, almost deep dish/stuffed in preparation and are quite covered in toppings. The veggie was a bit better than the meat. The calzones are huge, as several people ordered them at the other table, including my daughter. She only ate about 1/4 and took the rest to go. Our server was on top of things and very friendly. For reference purposes, I ordered a small BBQ pizza and the hot wings. These are items that I have ordered hundreds of times across the US throughout my years of business travels and this was by far the worst pizza and wings I have ever eaten. The hot wings were burnt and so dry that I could only compare them to what I would guess dog food to taste like. As for the BBQ pizza, it felt and tasted like a mash of non-identifiable ingredients with a sickly sweet after taste. Obviously, others have had good experiences with this restaurant based on their other reviews which is why I ordered from them but I cannot imagine those positive reviewers received the same items that I did, made the same way. I have been here many times and it's been quite pleasant. However this weekend was not. Went in on a busy game day and as expected was very busy. The staff gave little attention to the customers. No updates on wait time, no apologies. People were just fending for themselves. I saw at one point a person wipe down his own table, and grab his own menus to seat him selves and his friends! Very understaffed, and the staff was very overwhelmed. There was no one in the bar area helping the customers there, and for about a good 20 minutes there was no one at the front greeting people coming in. When We finally were seated, I already wanted to leave at that point. Fast forward to the food. Calzone was over cooked, and dry! Salad was ok, and no staff came back to see how we were doing, and ask if we wanted refills. We also had to get up and and go to the front to pay for our dinner since no one ever asked if we wanted our check. Please get more staff help during game days/weekends! Not only was it very unpleasant with our experience, but also unpleasant hearing everyone else's complaints. Best calzones ever! I've lived in NYC, Seattle, and Portland, these are not to miss. You even get a great side salad with their football sized calzones.
