    Ray Boudreaux! So awesome!

Finally got to have a girls night! We went to see Ray Boudreaux and band! It was a great show and the follow-up bands were fun too! Though I am a Baton Rouge native, this is actually my first time visiting the Varsity. Crazy I know! It was a pretty nice place to just hang out with friends, dance and just relax. I loved that there were tables and a separate dance floor. The bathrooms were clean too which was nice for a bar around LSU. Might make for a nice date night!

The Varsity is a popular venue frequented by many locals and mostly LSU college students. The venue has an upstairs area as well. The Varsity theater is right in the heartland of LSU and is connected to Chimes restaurant. Parking can be terrible due mainly to the fact of the location is directly in college town. I went to a popular concert here and boy I do not like the standing for 4 hours to wait for the artist to finally emerge. This place is high energy and their is the occasional marijuana smells and drunk unruly patrons. However most college centered music venues are like this so its the norm. I would go back if their was an artist I really wanted to see but I'd get their earlier and try to find somewhere to sit!

Major props to the Varsity for whoever is doing their booking lately. Protest the Hero and AFI were both amazing shows. They've had quite a good bit of great bands coming through and they have been running the shows and sound very smoothly. I love the size for shows too, it's perfect. I also love coming here for Saints games, they do a ton of drink specials including $10 unlimited beer with souvenir cup. You can also order food from Chimes during football games. Always a great experience. I even came here once for a work Christmas party event and it was great.

I saw Tyler Childers there. It was a great show and good atmosphere. The employees were great. I would recommend the VT!

I saw Henry Rollins here and it was great. Everyone who worked there was nice, the line moved quickly, and it was just fun.

The space itself is surrounded by other buildings and is medium sized. In keeping with the name, there are meditative motifs to the interior decorations. This space seems quite versatile, our group used the round tables with nice table cloths and folding chairs to enjoy a potluck and then hold a meeting. The space could be kept entirely open, used for talks or lectures, or ay sort of party. There are overhead doors on one wall that presumably could be opened for an indoor/outdoor event. Circa 1857 has such a great location on Government Street right be the Garden District, that it would be a convenient place to have a meeting or event. So don't hesitate to consider The Guru for your next gathering!

The owner is very sweet and you can tell she truly wants to provide a unique event space at a reasonable price. Another thing I loved about The Guru was being able to bring in your own food. It was hard for me to find a venue that let me bring my own food but also had the right #aesthetic lol! I didn't even decorate the place because it already done. They provided me with the tables (high top, circle, & rectangle), chairs, and even have linens available. There are 2 bathrooms and a back room where you can have your food/buffet set up. They even have this really awesome bar cart that my bartender was able to use! It can double for a beverage/food station too. (You know I added plenty of pics :P ) This is an extra bonus but I recently learned they also can host meetings, interview recordings, and more so it's not just for parties or weddings. On top of that, learning that the owner works to give back to the community/non profits is heartwarming. If you need an intimate, "not too big but just right" space, give this place a look!

I had a very upsetting experience at Mother's Lounge during pub quiz night…read more I am autistic. I arrived late, did not have a team, and was standing alone in the corner trying to be unobtrusive. There was a small stage with a folding table where the quiz host was asking questions. Between questions, music would play while people wrote down answers, and I was singing along quietly. Staff told me to move away from the stage, and I did. Then they told me I was not allowed to sing along with the songs between questions and called it disruptive. The situation escalated from there. The context matters. This was a bar that does karaoke regularly, and there was already a loud song playing between quiz questions while people were writing down answers. I was singing along to music that was already in the room, not trying to interrupt the quiz or perform over anyone. I also stood as far away from the quiz participants as I could without going outside, and when I sang louder than softly, I turned toward the wall/corner because I was trying not to project into the room. Maybe the sound carried more than I realized, but my intention and my behavior were not careless or hostile. When I became visibly upset, they threatened to call the police if I did not leave immediately. I said I needed five minutes to gather myself and my belongings. They refused and told me I had to leave right then or they would call the cops. That is when I raised my voice. I understand venues have rules. But there is a big difference between enforcing rules and escalating an overwhelmed disabled customer who is trying to comply. This was humiliating and frightening, and I hope ownership takes disability awareness and de-escalation seriously.
