For my first session, the tutor was 20 minutes late to the online session. She did not introduce herself or provide clear explanations or expectations. She was distracted and disengaged. She seemed to be looking at something online that was unrelated to the tutoring session. I ended the session early because it was unproductive. I do not trust this organization to hire tutors of quality after this experience. They refused to provide me with a refund, even though this experience was terrible. read more

I would give them zero stars, if possible. Great service in creating the account and putting my student in front of a tutor. The tutor turn out to be a retired Chemistry professor who spent 15 minutes complaining about the fact that VT assign to him too many students and he didn't have time to take care of anyone. We changed tutor. My student has a question, the same answer was given three times. Finally it came out that my student had not clearly understood what an isotope is. The tutor replied "you should know what an isotope is". We finally gave up and requested to cancel the subscription. They told me to consider it a done thing. One month later, mid-December, I was charged 324$ on the credit card. I called them to ask a refund and to finally cancel the subscription for good. The reply was that the contract does not allow for refunds, only for credit. When I promised to write this review, they told me "ok, we will put you in contact with the special requests team"... Our experience has been that of incompetent tutors and a scam-like approach to billing. At the time of writing I am not sure yet if they plan to bill me again in one month. Don't give your credit card number to this people. read more

My son was offered free tutoring after he didn't pass the Science Texes test and then they gave him a tutor who basically turned off his screen and ate his dinner while tutoring so he failed again and they refused to reimburse us. I would not recommend this Tutoring company.. read more

Horrible service. Signed up for World History AP for my son. The original tutor had no clue on the book or subject my son was studying. My son spent the first 30 minutes explaining to the tutor what book and subject they were on. After the session, I asked for a new tutor. The rep said he was taking notes on the book my son was studying and ensured me the new tutor would know the book and will make a "perfect" match. They also credited the session. The second session was with the SAME, ORIGINAL tutor that still did not have a handle on the subject or book. Called again to cancel and the rep tried to get me to stay by reassuring we will get a new tutor. I asked if in the notes if they knew what book and he said there was NOTHING in the notes on the book my son was studying from. Buyer be very aware and stay away. read more

Wow!!! Expensive. Useless. Our son got zero value from his sessions with Varsity Tutors. It was less valuable than the online class he was requesting help with. The tutor was presented as knowledgeable and capable in college level Pre-Calculus. According to our son, the tutor had to spend considerable time just understanding the lesson material. He absolutely was ponderous and spent the majority of time covering high school level basics. They push to sell these large lesson packages at outrageous prices. I had to push to get a single session. At $150, we would not have done it if our son was not desperate. Then, it proved worthless. WASTE of time and money. read more

Disappointed with my experience with Varsity Tutor. Agreed on a monthly rate of $269.10 for 6 months with a confirmed 10% discount. First bill comes in at $299. When I first talked to Varsity Tutors I was skeptical because it's online. However, I decided to try it because it was webinar based and my class was small (3 people, eventually 2). I got a very flexible instructor Marcela from Mexico City currently residing in the Midwest to teach Spanish. She had such a jovial disposition and a good understanding of not just her native language and culture but ours. She pointed out what words or phrases no one uses and easier ways to say things. We wrote, we spoke, we learned. I'd love to do it again. I just hope my instructor is Marcela. The next person has very big shoes to fill. The courses are twice a week for an hour and a half for 8 weeks. They're fun but there is no syllabus and your learning is catered to you not a piece of paper. read more

New billing system is a scam. I called today to cancel my subscription (after being told in May that I couldn't until "the end of July." When I called today (July 25) I was told that I couldn't cancel because the automatic billing cycle had already been processed for 8 more hours which totaled more than $500! My kids had several years of good experiences with tutors from this company prior to them using this new billing system. We will never use Varsity Tutors again. read more

UPDATE: I spoke to customer service who was excellent and made things right with me and allowed me to cancel my membership. She was very understanding and valued my feedback. My advice to everyone is to make sure you understand your payment plan and for what length of time you are selecting as those options were not discussed with me when I enrolled. read more

I reviewed as a one star previously because I felt their billing practices were unethical. They billed without notifying you they were continuing. Customer service reached out to me and refunded my money and the manager stated that they would look at updating their billing practices to include a monthly email notification. If they do in fact do that, then I at least credit them with trying to run a fair and helpful business. I do appreciate them refunding my money. My daughter still got nothing from the tutor she used, however. read more

Varsity Tutors may be a good resource for younger people at lower grade levels, but for college or advanced degree topics, no way. The tutors are not prepared, only know how to teach a topic one way (the way they learned, not the way you are learning today) and change schedules last minute. The company makes you pay in advance for tutoring with no refunds so if you have a bad experience, or your student doesn't jive with a tutor, you have zero recourse. Let the buyer beware. read more

My daughter who is in middle school struggles with Math. We tried Varsity Tutors and started one on one tutoring prior to the Covid pandemic with Alexandra. I really liked the way she interacted with my child and has tried different techniques to figure out which one helped my child to best remember and recall the steps to each problem. It has taken a little time but we have seen improvement in her grades and her confidence. I'm very pleased with the communication and follow up Varsity Tutors has provided as well as the consistent communication with Alexandra. She really cares about the students and their success which is important to me. I will recommend Varsity Tutors to anyone that needs additional tutoring or help! read more

We have been clients of Varsity Tutors for a few years. There are many reasons that have made this service exceptional for our family... First, the quality of tutoring is tremendous. The first tutor my son had I mentioned to my husband as being probably over qualified. My husband jokingly asked "What is she, a rocket scientist?" I replied, " Well, actually she is. One of her jobs is at NASA helping with mathematics." Secondly the convenience of being able to schedule the tutor to lock in a time to come to you home weekly. They are flexible to move that time if needed or cancel at the last minute. They do a great job of placing the right tutor for your child and are consistent to check in with the quality you are receiving. We highly recommend Varsity Tutors! Have been using vt for about 6 months and am very happy. I believe the extra subject focus for my 8 yr old twins has helped. Having the tutor come to our home and spend an hour with each girl two times a week has worked well for us. I wish I could give these people no stars. They took 1k and refused to refund it after at least three times trying to get us to do online tutoring, which is not at all what I was promised. I actually had one tutor be very rude when I said I would prefer one on one tutoring for my son, ( she apparently was miles away). One would think in Austin with UT there would be plenty of tutors for what I requested in person. I never got my 1k back, and when I asked for a physical address to send a notice that i intended to pursue a small claims suit I could not get anyone to call back. I would highly recommend a brick and mortar place such as Sylvan or Kumon. Be careful they are expensive and in my case disreputable. They had nothing to lose by giving me a refund. read more

We've used Varsity Tutors on two occasions to help prepare my two sons to take their big exams (Algebra, and Pre-Calculus). Varsity Tutors were instrumental in finding a great match on both occasions. The tutors were very knowledgeable in assessing and gauging what areas or content my sons should focus more on in a short period of time and were able to get them on the level that they should be with confidence to take the exam. They can be pricey, but the tutors are very efficient in preparing their students to reach their goal in a short period of time (three sessions for each of my sons). read more

We've used Varsity Tutors for both High School Classroom help and Photoshop Help. The online system works very well and the tutors were very helpful. Scheduling is easy and flexible since you don't have to leave home. Just agree on a date and time, log in and get started. While my kids got help with Computer Science and SAT prep, I found Brooke's help with Photoshop very valuable. I had never used it before and in two hours she walked me through how to add missing family members to a family photo, adjust color and lighting and add effects. If the first tutor you are assigned isn't very helpful, they will credit you those hours to work with another. Overall a good resource. read more

I think the service is good at matching potential tutors, and the one time the fit was not good, they rotated someone else in quickly and the match was a good fit. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Varsity Tutors! I failed my NCLEX exam the first two times I took it, then I called Varisty Tutors and booked 16 tutoring sessions with Heidi Watterson. It was tremendously helpful to work with her. I was hesitant about having an online tutor, but it turned out to be no issue at all. (Don't let that stop you from using their services). I took my NCLEX exam again, two days after my last tutoring session, and passed it! I highly recommend Varsity Tutors. They're knowledgable, encouraging and will set you up for success! read more

I used Varsity Tutors for in-home high school Geometry tutoring for my sons. I signed up with VT after researching what their services provided - and they delivered all year long. Our assigned tutor was professional, prompt, and helped my boys build their grades and confidence in math. Their background checks and fully vetted knowledge based testing of tutors assures you that you are getting what you paid for. I also appreciated knowing that (if needed) I could request a new tutor or use my credits for another subject at any time. Their online portal is great in tracking your sessions and feedback as well. I appreciated the flexibility offered in terms of what our needs were - they build their service around your schedule and offer online, in home, or remote sessions. The only "con" is having to buy hours in blocks up front vs. more flexible payment options; however, I understand these are professional tutors and this is how they are currently structured. With that said, the breakdown of their hourly rate was competitive with independent tutors advertising online and you did not get all the extra services and flexibility VT provides. I would absolutely recommend their services for anyone needing tutoring. read more

Stay far away from this outfit. They tell you they will match you up with someone local, our tutor was in Colorado. My daughter liked her well enough but she wanted a person in the same room tutoring her not sitting in front of a webcam and computer. Of course they took our money first before they told us our tutor wasn't local. We asked for our money back and they said no keep the hours as credit for college. They just called us of course they have no person located where our daughter is going to school, and now they say sorry it's too late to get your money back. This is just a money grabbing scam from dishonest people, do not make the huge mistake we made trying to help our child. read more

I would love to write a more positive review of our experience, but unfortunately the results and the resulting lack of follow through by Varsity Tutors leads me to write a mediocre review. Our daughter took SAT test prep through Varsity Tutors in semi-private tutoring. Unfortunately, her test scores went down from her previous test. Her study mate's scores went up, which was great. I appreciate test scores are a result of lots of inputs, including the environment on the day of testing. My review is based upon two things - #1 our family paying a lot of money and not getting a positive result; #2 (more importantly) the complete lack of follow up by the owners to our calls to discuss this to see if there was any policy they had in these situations. (e.g. partial refund, discounted future tutoring, etc.) Varsity Tutors does not have complete control of the testing environment or the scores of students, but they do have control over their customer service, and not responding to a parent after a number of follow-up calls. read more
