Foremost is a great liquor store if you're a beer lover, for sure. They're the second best liquor store in the neighborhood. I dropped them that one star as I feel they've been a bit on the expensive side lately. If you're off the California blue, it's a no brainer to stop in here for your sudsy needs. Went to Vas on the recommendation of one of the roomies before a dinner date with the lady at Chilapan to pick up some tequila (ta-killa in the vernacular) for margaritas. Holy selection Batman. I went in and spent about 20 minutes staring at tequilas. Tequilas that were just going to end up in a pitcher of margarita anyway...but which were enthralling none-the-less. And then I started looking at the craft gins they sell. And then the rye...and then I had to pull myself away but my eye caught the beer selection and I was done for. Three Floyds. Deschutes. Game over. Staff were friendly enough. No one really asked if I needed help, but it's a liquor store, not Disneyland so I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I'm sure if I had gone and asked for help they would have been accomodating. Plus it's approximately a 10 minute walk from my house. So I have a liquor store on file now for my alcohol needs. After moving to Chicago from a town an hour outside of Missouri (and Missouri liquor prices), buying booze is painful - especially if you're celiac/gluten intolerant and have to shell out for cider if you don't feel like the harder stuff. This place made the transition a little less so. Fair selection of hard ciders - I counted at least two kinds of Fox Barrel and 3 of woodchuck, plus the cheap shit - didn't see Original Sin, my personal hallmark of a great liquor store, but I also didn't ask. From what I could see their wine and beer selections were alright - I know everyone comes here for the latter, but even if you can't indulge in barley, it's definitely worth a stop! read more

This has been my neighborhood liquor store for all of my 13 years in Logan Square. I think I should be a silent partner! Pete and everyone else treats me like old money aristocracy and for that I am eternally grateful. Their bourbon and rye selection has expanded greatly in the past three years, as has their beer selection, which has an excellent focus on microbrews. This is the place for whiskey & beer in Logan Square. The wine selection is decent and you can find some good values. I tend to save my wine purchases for the Disco on Elston but you can get a good Rhone here without breaking the bank. read more

Bell's Hopslam? Check. Wild Onion's Hopslayer? Check. I was supposed to be in a hurry, but when I couldn't find either of the beers I wanted, I decided to just ask. Well, good thing I did because while Wild Onion's stuff was on display, it wasn't easy to find. Bell's Hopslam, on the other hand, was in the back. I think the prices are fair. I've seen a number of other beers for more or less elsewhere, depending on where you go. It's all about convenience. Plus, they have a pretty sweet selection. Neither Whole Foods or Binny's are in the immediate area and I don't know of too many other places nearby with a similar enough selection. read more

My grandmother passed down a family recipe for Harvey Wallbanger cake, which is the best dessert I've every tasted. My mother copied the recipe for me and I went on the hunt for one key ingredient. It called for Galliano (an herbal/orange liqueur). In her recipe, grandma wrote "Galliano is what you need, but it's too expensive" (at the time, like $4.00), "use Neopolitan Liquer instead" (she noted the price at that time ($1.00 or so). I figured Sam's was the only place to make such a purchase. They didn't have Neopolitan Liquer, so I ended up with Galliano, which is pretty pricey in the only (very large) size they carried. Flash forward a couple of weeks, and I'm in Foremost. Just down the street from where I live. They had Neopolitan Liquer and Galliano, in multiple sizes! Very impressive! And their beer selection is even better! read more

The Peruvian place down the street is BYOB, but they have mean mixes for pisco sours and pisco with passionfruit. Thank you, Yelpers, for steering me to Vas for the Pisco itself. And thank you to Vas for stocking not just one, but two brands! We paid a little extra for the one with the fancier bottle, having no basis for comparison. Then again, based on the reviews here, it sounds like the owner could have given us the 411 on the flavors. Even better was that there was a knowledgeable woman giving samples of a new rum from Medellin, Colombia (or as they spell it in Spanish, "ron"). I lived in Medellin for a short time, and I'm a little partial to buying the local ron, Ron Medellin, since you have to get Ron Viejo De Caldas--the better Colombian ron, on the down-low there. So I passed on that, but I plan not to pass on Vas in the future. read more

This place is great. They have a huge selection and unlike the crappy Foremost near my place in Albany Park they take credit cards regardless of the purchase amount. The only place in the area with a good selection of Irish whiskey, vodka, gin, and scotch. They carry everything from rotgut to mid range booze, so you can always find something delicious to drink. The beer cooler is small, but stocks a good selection for the size of it (it's not all macrobrews, yay). If you're looking for some obscure craft brew they won't have it, but if you're looking for Fat Tire or Great Lakes you'll do just fine. read more

Vas Foremost has an extensive collection of beers (Oh my god, Zombie Dust!) wine (Oh my god, decent Sake!) and hard-liquor (Oh my god, Rye!). It's big, well lit, clean, and free of vagrants. I feel like an American in this store due to my freedom of choice, but like a child due to my irresponsibility. But if you're looking for cold-craft beers, and good rye/tequila/whatever, Vas Foremost has got it at a good price. The beer is across-the-board more expensive than it needs to be, and there is way too much wine there to have a staff who knows nothing about wine. Well I'll give them 1 star, one because I have to, and two, because the staff are friendly. They aren't my favorite to buy a sixer as they are several dollars more than other stores in the area. Go to Red Star up Milwaukee, they're more decently priced. PRO TIP and the main reason for the 1 star: If you shop here absolutely do not park in their parking lot!!! I stopped here for a six pack, bought two, and put them in the car. I needed to grab my keys back from a friend who was at the end of the block and because I walked south out of the parking lot they booted my car. I was gone FOUR MINUTES and had just shopped in their store! My beer run ended up costing me an extra $170 bucks because I walked up the street. The parking guy refused to look at my receipt citing that it didn't matter if I shopped there or not, you can't leave the parking lot to go anywhere but their store. WHAT. A. JOKE. I used to live in the neighborhood and thought this place was great. Better selection than most every other place in the vicinity. However, I am giving them only two stars because their prices have skyrocketed. It's one thing to go to a convenience store and pay higher prices because they have such low volumes, but this is a full-on huge liquor store. There's no reason their prices should be $2+ dollars more than other stores. A few nights ago I was on my way to a dinner party and stopped in, but was so put off by the prices I went to another place on the way and compared the prices. The beers I was looking at were on average AT LEAST $2 cheaper at the second store. If you are looking for a good selection but don't mind paying too much for it, go here. This place has definitely improved in quality over the years. The staff is really helpful, and they sell individual mixer bottles! Great beer selection, along with some weird liqueurs reflecting the former eastern european bent of the neighborhood. Also, they used to not include some type of tax on the booze they do at other stores in the listed price...which sometimes suprise me at the checkout...but this seems to have been rectified. As far as selection goes, Vas Foremost has one of the best in the Logan Square area. They have a large beer and huge liqour selection. They are also reasonably and competitively priced for a city liquor store. They have a parking lot that you can park in for free if you aren't within walking distance, which is certainly a bonus! read more

They have an incredible beer selection and decent prices for a neighborhood liquor store. Prices for beer are good, but deals vary based on the brand (i.e. a 12 pack of Stella may be $1 more than at CVS but Pilsner Urquell will be $1 less). None of the price differences are very drastic, but seeing some microbrews that are $9.50 at Sam's breaking the $10 mark makes the price difference seem greater than it is. The selection is great, many Belgian beers, all the Unibroue beers, and a wide selection or microbrews and imports. They will also order a beer if you ask them to, and will carry it regularly if it sells well. read more

This is the best liquor store around. I love the staff and they always carry a great selection of beers. I used to say I was biased because it's a 6 minute walk from my apartment but it continues to get better and better everytime I go there. The last time I stopped in I got zombie dust and the time before 120 minute dogfish. Among those heavy hitters they hold an array of great and interesting beers from near and far. If you're more of a wine or liquor drinker they also have a great selection. Seriously this is a one stop shop. read more

I feel as though I've been living in this neighborhood long enough and frequenting this place often enough to throw it a bone. It is really and truly the only place to walk in and pick up some decent beer in our neighborhood. I'm on the fence about this change in review as I feel Vas could be quickly and easily replaced by something better and slightly more reasonably priced. I do realize the price of hops went up - but not that much. BUT! I love their beer and can count on them for a good option when I'm looking for something a little different or new.
