I bought a corded hammer drill here for pickup, and the next morning, less than a day later, it started smoking while I was using it normally. When I brought it back and explained what happened, the manager, Yvette, plugged it in, ran it for a few seconds with nothing attached, told me it was "fine" and treated me like I was making it up. A drill motor running with no load won't catch an issue that only appears under load, and a brand new drill that smokes is a serious fire hazard. It was completely negligent of Yvette to tell me to continue using the drill and not accept it as a defective return. This creates both a liability issue for the store and a safety issue for me. I raised these concerns and she was dismissive the whole time. I ended up leaving, calling Ace's customer service line and getting them on a three-way call with the store. The phone rep was great and easy to deal with. Yvette only agreed to take the drill back because I'd ordered it online through Ace for pickup, which meant the rep could force the return. Otherwise I doubt she'd have budged. She gave the rep attitude too. After she hung up, the rep apologized to me for how rude Yvette had been. I went back to the store and the return went through, but even when completing the return, the cashier was openly cold. I asked how her day was going, and she just said "fine," flat and unfriendly, without looking at me. Because of this experience, this location has lost my business. I won't buy from a hardware store that doesn't seem to take seriously the safety of the tools it sells or how it treats customers who flag a problem. I've still got the invoice, the return receipt, and Ace customer support case number if the owner wants to look into it. read more

Has more in there than you think. And if they don't carry it they could probably order it for you. We've gotten everything from tools, paint, one of those standard city shopping carts for big Trader Joe's runs, to Christmas decorations. The employees are very helpful. I much prefer to visit this small business than the big box stores. read more

They run a nice scam. When you buy a Sodastream cylinder they charge you 15 USD deposit but when you return an empty one without being a refill they do not return that deposit. Not sure if Sodastream or Ace Hardware is behind that scheme but it's a nice extra income for them. read more

I have tried to color match paint here twice. Both times, the paint has turned out to be an entirely incorrect shade. I brought the paint back to the store with both of the receipts as well as photos of my discolored walls, hoping that the team at Brickman's might be able to fix the problem (especially since I had already spent $60 on the two quarts of paint that I can't use). When I explained the situation to the individual at the front desk, she responded in a very accusatory way with "what do you want me to do about it? It's the exact same color." She then opened the can of paint and painted over the only paint sample that I have, and ruined it. It was an incredibly uncomfortable and disappointing interaction to say the very least. The colors don't match (even after the paint has dried), and the evidence is in the attached images. The paint that they gave me is darker with cooler undertones, and my walls are lighter and have warmer undertones. I received excellent assistance from the young man who helped me mix the paint. It seems that his management could learn a thing or two from him about providing quality customer service. I definitely won't be returning here any time soon. read more

This is the BEST hardware store on the east side. The second you come in, they offer help, and always make sure you get exactly what you need. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, and non judgmental. They've helped me find odd lightbulbs, drywall patching kits, even had keys copied (perfect and done quickly!) The shelves are always fully stocked, and the store is clean and organized. They even went above and beyond today and unpacked items from the back just so I could make the best use of my coupons. Can't recommend this place enough, I do not go to other hardware stores any more, none can compete with this one!! A++, 11/10, 5 stars. read more

*Disclaimer* I've come to this store on several occasions to buy some small supplies since I live in the housing community right next door. I've never had an issue until this evening, and I will do my best to detail the reason it hits different, along with what happened. My initial thought was to let it slide, but nah, I'm going to leave this here. I had got to the store about 3 minutes before closing time, the door was locked with a customer inside at the register, 2 cashier's (one being the manager/owner - who I've never had an issue with btw) and another employee standing directly in my eye line. I did a quick tap to try and get his attention and signified there's 2 minutes, and I would be very quick. I just needed a bag to dispose my Christmas tree. The employee knew I was standing there but would not look at me he continued to look at the manager as if waiting for some kind of instruction. Another quick tap, and the e.plyee shook his head, and I felt disappointed surely, but just walked away since of course they are readying to close and by now it's 8 pm. I walked away to the citibike station right outside and began to lookup closing hours for home depot, just as I'm about to inset my key I see what appeared to be a young man of a very fair skinned complexion run up to the door, and almost as soon as he does I see the door swing open. Naturally, I ran to the door which was a good 50 feet away, in disbelief I said "hey man, how are you going to let him in ,I was just here!!" I'm saying this through a locked glass door. I hear the manager say, let him in. I was clearly upset that they turned me away just a couple minutes before, and without hesitation let someone else is right after. He (manager) then asked what do I need, and I replied a Christmas tree bag - they didn't have any, but he recommended a movers bag, I said ok... Inside I was hot. I stood there for a few minutes wondering why do I have to make a spectacle of myself for plain customer service to make it seem like I'm being done a favor...I need to beg to be a patron. But as I stood there I couldn't help but think that some of the stores around this community clearly seem to treat white customers much nicer than those who are not. I've experienced this at Lentz deli, and today I've experienced it here. Those who go to these stores need no description of the ethnicity of the employees that work there which makes it even harder for me to digest. While my 1 star review may not accurately reflect every facet of service this store can provide, Im just tired of this preferential treatment some get. It was a small thing, and even smaller to anyone who is reading this, but those few minutes showed me something bigger than few dollars I've spent there. I try to support small business. The store manager - Les - literally searched far and wide to help me locate the package, even talking with UPS himself, and he succeeded! Nicest staff ever. I've actually spent thousands of dollars (through several local moves) at this store previously, but will never be returning as I've learned that their oversight and return policy (especially regarding paint, of which I buy a ton) is borderline fraudulent. I went in with a paint swatch yesterday and asked if they could make the color. The woman making the paint told me she had access to it in her system. As they were making the paint, I paid for it, brought it home and realized it was a COMPLETELY different color than that which she told me she was making. Upon returning to the store with: - the swatch that I brought in that the employee herself had wrote a color code onto - a picture of the swatch next to the purchased paint showing that they are a completely different color, - and the receipt of only a day ago, They refused to allow me to exchange the paint that they had incorrectly mixed. It's not even like it was a little correct-- it was a LOT incorrect. Like so incorrect that if they tried to defend this in civil court, the judge would have laughed. Luckily my credit card gave me back the value of the paint, so I'll skip the civil court (though a part of me really wanted to). Still, for convenience of actually being able to return something that is defective or not being held responsible for the employee errors, I'm not going to be shopping at this store ever again. I went today to see about replacing the chain that broke off my ceiling fan. The employee told me I would have to have the fan taken apart. He gave me the names of some people who might be able to do this. In the meantime I needed to buy a fan. The store carried a variety of fans. I asked about the two that looked completely different. The salesperson kept telling me to buy one model in particular. When I tried to ascertain what the difference was between the two, he kept pointing and telling me to get a particular one. He refused to tell me what the differences were between the two. Since he wouldn't answer my questions I thought that maybe he had an overstock on the one he was trying to get rid of. I will never shop in this store again. I wouldn't trust anything said from the employees there. I don't understand the attitude. There are many places within walking distance from this ACE store that sell comparable merchandise. read more

I went in there for paint and ended up getting great toys for my kids, fuzzy socks for my wife, and some extra piece of mind for me! This is truly a one stop shop. This over priced, poorly managed store is not worth your support. It's also giving Ace a bad name. You can get the same items at Duane Reade, Lowes, Home Depot, and Village hardware across the street....for less and with wonderful service. I bought a custom cut roller shade that turned out to be mismeasured by the store. Had to go back to get another one. That one feel apart. So I decided to stop messing with roller shades and ordered proper custom solar shades. I paid up front, they came in and measured, quoted 2 weeks....it's been over a month, still no shades. Every time I call to check in, I'm greeted by the rudest manager as if it's my fault the shades are not in. (Buddy, I'm not the one who screwed up and forgot to place the order! If you don't want unhappy customers, don't screw up!) I did make a mistake by I paying upfront based and trusting that this crappy store would actually deliver the goods. So, I never write reviews on Yelp. Actually I never write reviews period.But I had such a fantastic experience in Ace Hardware Brickman 18th and First Avenue that I must share. I went in to get some shelves for my apartment. I was greeted by an older gentleman, who not only got me what I needed but took the timeout. I mean really took the time to explain to me what to do. Which I needed. The staff friendly, well trained, and kind. A handicap woman came into Ace while I was there and I was watching from the corner of my eye. I must say there are good people out there. It might as well have been Michelle Obama the way the helped this lady. Their expertise are second to none. Very very educated in all aspects of hardware. I go to Home Depot ask them where can I find an angle grinder cordless they look at me like I have three heads or push me off on someone else. I shouldn't feel that way that I'm bothering them when asking for some service-be a human. Anyway screw Home Depot never get a penny when I can go to this first rate godsend on 18th and first. read more

I am so so unhappy with this place. On jan 17th I bought 4 gallons of yellow paint. Benjamin Moore. Top of the line and I paid full price. But what I didn't expect to pay for was poor service. From the workers in the store up through the owner; everything was unsatisfactory. The young man who mixed the paint didn't secure the lids to 2 gallons of the four . Two hours later the delivery guy left the paint in my living room in a box, sideways; they were not standing upright. An hour later when I was ready to paint a large puddle of yellow seeped out of the box. The paint spilled onto the other two gallons and the whole order was unusable. In addition my parquet floor which was saturated with the stuff, has not come clean since. See photo. The store manager Jeanine, refunded the money I spent for the paint and seemed put off when I asked them to throw in a can of primer for my trouble. 'Throw in? You mean give you free? ' 'Yes,' I said. 'Mistakes happen, I understand, by some reparations are in order. I spent an hour cleaning and I have more work to do..' 'No,' she said resolutely. When I called the store later to talk to the manager, josh, I was told he was out for the weekend. I left my number and he never called back. When I spoke to a sympathetic lower level manager who goes by the nickname lp, he apologized for the inconvenience I had experienced but he was unable to authorize any kind of compensation for my troubles. He said he would try, but no one got back to me and it's been more than a few weeks now. I will never buy anything in the store again. Can't say enuf about Ally (pronounced Ali), the lovely Indiian mgr, formerly with the now defunct Vercesi Hardware (a Gramercy Park staple). I needed a large washboard for handwashables. It's not like customers are clamoring for washboards anymore. But I'm old-fashioned and washboards do a great job for hand-washed items. I phoned store. Spoke to Ally who said it wasn't in stock but would be happy to order it for me.. He didn't mock me or made me feel uncomfortable about ordering a dinosaur of an item as a washboard. One week later, lovely Maria rang me to say it arrived. Ally knows his stuff. But his earnest desire to really help you out with a smile - and without attitude - puts him above and beyond. This is my first Yelp review. I came into the store because I was having a fruit fly problem in my apartment. I spoke with the superviser Les, and not only did I get hw products I needed but I got great advice on how to handle the problem. He gave me tips and advice on things to do in the apartment regarding cleanliness and trash disposal. It was above and beyond what I needed but it helped so much. It's only been one day and I already have the fruit fly problem under much greater control. Overall just very down to earth people especially the boss. I was very happy with my experience. Purchased two Friedrich A/C's and had no problem with the sale. However, when it came time to deliver and install that's where it went downhill. The installers arrived close enough to the scheduled time, however, rushed in and out. Did not take the time to explain anything about the operation of the A/C. After I read the manual, I still had no clue how to access the menu. Called Ace to get some help and they told me they would send back the installer to help me since no one could answer my question at the store. After many calls, being told several times that they were on there way -- three hours later, no one ever showed up. Last conversation they told me the installer would call me at 6-6:30 but that never happened. One of the worst customer service experiences. I really wanted to support a local business, however, that did not prove satisfactory, and will never make that mistake again. If any Stuyvesant Town residents are in need of a new A/C avoid this place for purchasing and mostly for installing. The people at Stuyvesant Town were amazing setting up the windows -- made a mistake not to have them do the installation. read more

SCAM Ace just tried to rip me off! They charge a $15 deposit for a Soda Stream cartridge and when I just tried to return the cartridge to get my deposit back the guy at the register wanted to give me $5. I told him it was a $15 deposit on my receipt (that I showed him). He called the owner on the phone and the owner said to give me $10. Still not acceptable!
