One of my favorite local fish joints. I come for the fish nuggets, but people NEVER stop getting them porgy sammiches. I have never had a porgy sandwich, but they love it . Vaughn's is a certainly a neighborhood staple for soul food, specializing in Fish. I ordered a small fried chicken dinner served w/ fries + slaw ($9) and a fried catfish dinner w/ fries and slaw ($10). Both orders totaled $19. Good sized food portions. Waited about 50 minutes for both meals to be ready. I definitely recommend calling ahead to place an order. The parking area is not ideal b/c the restaurant is located at a busy intersection. But nonetheless, the food is good and I will return. read more

Never ever again. I ordered a $90 breakfast for the family and I had a corn beef hash that got me sick. It was disgusting. Everything was greasy and looked unappetizing and tasted just nasty. I got really sick I can't even think about eating for the rest of the day. Whoever is cooking for this restaurant needs to be fired or this place needs to be shut down. As always, the food is delicious and plentiful. The service is amazing and I enjoy going there. The take-out restaurant is small and a hidden jewel in Boston. On display are pictures of famous people who have visited their establishment. Now that I'm thinking about their food, I will be there after work today for some fried chicken wings and gizzards. I've lived in Dorchester for 2 years and have never visited this restaurant... until now. With a hankering appetite for catfish, I decided to pay this spot a visit. Upon entering I honestly questioned the quality of the food due to the questionable hygiene of the establishment (flies don't exactly scream "eat here"). Well, I sucked it up and ordered my food. I only ordered catfish so I only have insight on this one menu item. Honestly, the catfish was great. It wasn't the freshest tasting fish, but aside from the ends (they were a tad too chewy) the fish was great. The batter the fish was fried in was seasoned well, it wasn't too salty and didn't overpower the natural flavor of the fish. The fish itself was flakey and while slightly dry still was enjoyable. The tarter sauce was a nice surprise too. Rather than the standard mayonnaise and relish concoction, I detected hints of dill. The price for the portion of fish was reasonable. For $7.50 I got an 8 inch fillet. I definitely didn't feel like I was getting ripped off. Would I go here again? Absolutely. It's not the "special treat" kind of place, but more so like a Duchess, Dennys or IHOP with its quality of food. I walked in the door and could smell the old grease. To make it worse they were burning incense - I guess to cover the old grease odor. Despite this, I ordered the haddock plate - which only cost $10. While waiting, I looked around and took note of the dirt and dust balls. I have lived in Dorchester for 47 years have brought friends from Walpole, Thailand, and South End to eat at Vaughns and have always enjoyed the meals. I live near Codmon Square but went the extra distance to buy fish at Vaughn's. The fish was always fresh, great tasting and ample size plate. Worse customer service I've experienced in my life ever!! They're too ghetto to say may I help you, or "who's next". You are talking to a cook/cashier behind a large plexiglass wall covered with all sorts of pictures (some local celebrities, and some people from the neighborhood). You cant see if they're putting something in your food, and although the food IS good, the portions are small. I asked for a menu, and a voice from behind the bulletproof glass yells out "man look over on the wall". I'm like okkaaaaayy...so then I ask a second time for a menu, and I clarify a paper menu like any other restaurant, then a hand sticks out from the 8x10" window and passes me a piece of paper with the foods they sell with no prices on it. Not a menu at all, but more like an order sheet with no prices. I still gave them the benefit of the doubt and ordered a $9 fish and chips plate since they were out of most of the items on the list. 20 minutes later I got a small styrofoam box with ONE single piece of fish in it and about 3/4 cup of fries. In order to get a normal amount of fish you have to order the extra fish which is $16. All in all the food was decent but I killed it in like 2minutes and I was just as hungry as I was when I pulled up. If their attitudes were better, I could deal with it, but c'mon just because you're in the hood doesnt mean you have to be hood, especially when you're depending on my dollar to keep your hole in the wall running. This place looks like a run down pawn shop inside. I was expecting to see a rat or a roach run by, but I didnt see one. Again I must stress they have shytty customer service. You have to literally argue with the thugs in line as to who is next to order. You would think this store is ran by some punk highschool dropout who rather be out getting high than working. I really had high hopes walking in there, and I was terribly let down. Instead of arguing with them and letting them know about their bad service, I figured I'd go online and post my review for many more to see. If you want to feel like you're begging someone to take your money for an inadequate amount of food, then this is your place. I'll just stick to Morse Seafood Company located in the South End.
