This spot has been on my "I should try that someday" list for a few years, and I'm so glad I finally made it in. The first thing that surprised me was how much seating they offer. The outdoor area is inviting, and inside there's a great mix of low-top tables, high-tops, bar seating, and cozy spots to settle into. Everything feels thoughtfully spread out, and I loved being able to see the open brick oven and activity in the kitchen. The space also has a bit of a bakery/café vibe, making it feel like a place where you could stop in for a quick grab-and-go item or stay awhile for a full meal. The staff made a great impression too. The people at the front were incredibly helpful to my guest, who was having some trouble with their phone. I also ordered one of the specialty drinks but asked for it without alcohol. The bartender absolutely nailed it--it was so good that my only complaint was that it didn't come in a bigger glass. For food, I had the grass-fed burger and fries (see photo), and it exceeded my expectations. The burger was so juicy and flavorful that I ended up cutting it into pieces just to make it manageable. Every bite was delicious. What I appreciate most is that I left feeling like I hadn't even experienced everything the restaurant has to offer. I love that it used to be a train station turned restaurant and the food is both beautiful and delicious. Menu prices are a bit high, but again worth it if you're in it for the full experience. Lovely local spot! Service is great, the servers here are very kind. Steel & Rye's Pizza is literally the best. They always have amazing sauce, delicious toppings, & crispy yet airy crusts. You'll never go wrong with any of their pizzas. Their Shirley Temples are also incredibly refreshing. The only downside was their dessert. The Lavender Blueberry Cake was texturally hard so it was difficult to eat. The vanilla icecream on top didn't seem necessary either. This review is for their bakery. I love their glazed donut. The texture is fluffy inside and the glazed formed a thin crisp. All of their pastries are not too sweet. The vanilla cranberry danish had the perfect amount of tartness paired with the smooth pastry cream. I could taste the early grey tea in the London fog tea cake. It looked dense but wasn't inside. The pecan coconut blondie had a lovely chewy texture and the coconut flavor wasn't overwhelming. The service was amazing with the waiter checking on us frequently if we enjoyed the food which we did. For my drink, I got the cookie butter latte which was delicious. It was more on the sweeter side which is what I like. For the appetizer, we got the spiced chip and dip. The chips were very airy and crispy where you can still taste the potato. The dip was a perfect pairing. It was light and creamy with a perfect amount of spice. I love that the pizza was wood fired. They have a cute concept for breakfast/brunch where you can order at the bakery stand and just find a table to sit at & they will bring you what you ordered. The chicken cutlet was my favorite; moist and not dry at all. I'm obsessed with their drinks... honey lavender is so good. The matcha latte with ube was also very nice. Nice local spot with a small parking lot / street parking all up the street available. Walking in we were greeted right away. Directed us over to the order counter. Grabbed drinks and some sandwiches! - matcha ube latte - ice cold brew - honey lavender ice latte coffee - chicken cutlet sandwich - BLT - Turkey sandwich Everything was enjoyable. I liked my matcha latte especially after mixing it well the Ube and the matcha always goes well together as a pair. The lady liked her coffee not overly sweet! I got the chicken cutlet sandwich, it was much bigger than i expected and i was definitely full after. The chicken was fried well, still moist and not dry. Thin cuts! The sauce they have on there i forget what it was but it was like a pesto/olive oil/ Italian seasoning mix. You take your seat with a number flag and they graciously bring it to your table. We went here a lot during and in the years immediately after the pandemic thanks to its ample outdoor seating, kids menu, and variety of options. We barely go anymore. With each visit, the prices seemed to go up, and quality seemed to go down. For a while it was our preferred go-to wood fire pizza take out spot. Even though I don't live in the area, I've been here a couple of times. The vibe inside is rustic dining /bakery with a morning ToGo bakery that is amazing to a dinner experience that is as gastro as it gets. The menu is artisan everytime. The chef is clearly an artist. I've had their dinner pasta specials and the lasagna bolognese and the kale Caesar. Service is clearly outstanding and the servers grasp of the menu is superb. This is a cut above everyone else. Stopped in for the morning bakery items. While expensive, the flavor and quality is very high (at $6 a piece, it can get pricey trying them all!) staff have always been friendly and helpful/welcoming. My second visit in about a year. I went for the pizza but ended up getting the cheeseburger. For $26 dollars I figured it must be amazing. Had to try it but wish I hadn't. So not worth the money. First off, I asked for med-rare and it came med and was dry. Secondly, the onions were ok, but not great. The bread to meat ratio was way off. The patty is too small for the size bun it comes on. After a couple bites I took the top off of it. But worst of all is the burger sauce. It is thousand island dressing with so much liquid smoke it tasted fake. Left a sickening taste in my mouth and I could not finish it. I also do not like their beer menu at all. Extremely disappointing. Great place for coffee in Milton! They have many options and specialty drinks! I have not tried the food here but will definitely be back to try! The staff was very helpful when explaining how to order since it was a bit confusing where to order when I first walked in. I ordered an iced Ube latte and it was great! I have been to S&R many times and occasionally sample their baked goods at the Hingham Farmers Market. Their brunch menu is consistently excellent (fresh ingredients and farm to table quality) and their espresso drinks and martinis are always good. The atmosphere is great as well. It's in an old ambulance depot so it's very large and roomy inside. Can't speak to their dinner menu but hope to try it soon. read more

We just had one of the worst dining experiences. We had been before and had a good experience but this time it felt like something went wrong every step of the way. First they brought the wrong appetizer, then they brought the wrong drinks, they forgot other drinks. when it came time for the main meal 2 of 3 of our party got our food while the last person's food came out so late the other people were already done with their dinner. The whole time this was happening we were also being given other tables'' drinks and food while the people next to us got our orders. The water seemed very confused by everything and the manager ended up comping our entire meal. It was so disappointing because we had had such a good time the first time. One of those cases where I found myself doing research. If I am going to bop a place on the noggin, I want to make sure I more-or-less know what I am talking about. Steel & Rye appears to have something of an identity crisis, though somehow it works? S&R is the amalgamation of a hip brunch and dinner restaurant combined with a bakery/cafe that bakes pastries and loaves of bread. Complete with a bar, of course. I stopped in for a non-boozy Sunday brunch and ordered the chilaquiles and a regular coffee. I later bought a piece of Cherry & Pink Peppercorn Shortbread to satisfy my sweet tooth and go with the coffee once the chilaquiles were gone. The Chilaquiles were excellent! The chips were warm and felt homemade, and the chicken was in ample amounts and very tender. The salsa verde was fantastic, too; it brought a gentle level of heat and acidity and tied everything together. The only thing that would have been nice would be some avocado. Then again, that's just the millennial in me talking. The execution here works. Having the chicken and most of the sauce be towards the bottom meant that the chips could shine on their own without being turned into a soggy mess. As great as this dish was, I found the price steep relative to what I got. $21 for a plate of (though tasty) chips, a modest amount of chicken, an egg, and some veggies and sauces seems relatively high. Moving to the baked good - I immensely enjoyed the shortbread. It wasn't overly sweet, and the cherry and pink peppercorn flavors worked well together. I only wish I wasn't so desensitized to pepper in all forms! The service here was solid, nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. read more

Off the lunch menu - the turkey and swiss sandwich was absolutely scrumptious. I would usually never go for turkey or swiss, but this beautiful sandwich was one of the best I have ever tasted. Their adorable honey lavender latte is so good I nearly fainted with the awe-striking deliciousness of this beverage. (basically, it's to-die-for and you should get this if you're into that kind of thing) The restaurant itself is adorable. It's basically a barn vibe with cute lighting, plenty of seating variety, and some of the cutest glassware. I didn't get pictures, but the water is served in the cutest sets!!! Bathrooms are super obvious, a little hall right before the bakery counter when walking in the door. They have free wifi available and it didn't seem too slow or anything, there was music playing in the background at just the perfect volume to hear yet not too loud as to overpower conversation. They have many service options, but I ordered at the bakery ordering space. Each table, however, has a QR code to scan, order, and pay for the order without having to use their little "register" (perfect for the average introvert). Every staff member I saw was friendly and incredibly helpful to this first-timer. Make sure you figure out what time of day you are going so you know what menu(s) you could choose off of, though because they have schedules for meal rotations. read more

My wife and I have been to Steel at least 20 times, and I've been with a friend probably a dozen more. The ambiance is great. Staff is usually good. One of the main managers (a guy, forget his name) is kind of a prick. That's not really a big deal. The reality is that it's inconsistent from a food standpoint. The food can be excellent. The food can also be terrible. It's not that I expect perfection every time, but the range of outcomes is pretty extreme here. I've gotten the burger, pepperoni pizza, one of the pasta dishes, a bunch of different things, and they were great. Well worth the money (not a cheap place) and tasty. The pastries are pretty good. I've also gotten the burger before and it wasn't great. The pastas as well. Some of the appetizers are now tiny portions. The lunchtime menu, while enticing, can be a joke. The Cuban sandwich is a coin flip any hour of the day - it's either great and crisp, or skimpy and overloaded with yellow mustard. A few weeks ago I got a latte and it was so sweet I couldn't drink it. The most recent last straw was this Italian sub. The photo does the justice, and for $14, you're better off at Blasi's or Lamberts. This was a bread and lettuce sandwich. Really sad. My wife and I both think it used to be better, but has gone downhill, up in price, and it's like rolling the dice going there now. We have two friends that live nearby and they also agree. We're more likely to goto Bowery (much more consistent) if we're in that area. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could - some days it's a 5, others a 2, so 3.5 would be the average. But it's not good or consistent enough for 4 stars or more. Pains me to write this review but after the Italian sandwich today, it was time to say it out loud. Disappointing stuff. read more

Recently came here with a group of friends and the service was great. A friend has food allergies and the staff were able to accommodate her. Not only that, but every time they dropped off a dish for the table, they made sure to notify her whether those contain allergens. The rest of us were impressed because while many restaurants do take allergies seriously, none of them have gone as far as having staff inform us for every shared dish that was put on the table. My friend really appreciated that extra mile. The food was good - I loved the roasted chicken that I ordered and apparently so did my friends as they kept talking about it and didn't turn down any offers from me to take some. I'd love to come back and try the pizza once they replace their oven. read more
