WENT IN FOR VACCINE AND WAS INJECTED WITH WRONG DRUG. My dog was here for a simple vaccine visit. I was not even offered the chance to go into exam room with her. Next thing I know a vet comes out to tell me she was accidentally given the wrong medication - Librella - a drug for arthritis - which she does not have. I was not told how such a serious mistake could have happened or what steps would be taken to prevent something like this in the future. Instead, I was offered an apology and a Librella pamphlet with dozens of possible side effects to look out for. Hardly reassuring given an error of this magnitude. I trust a veterinarian with my dogs well being, and mistakes like this are unacceptable. Whether it was negligence, poor communication or disregard for accountability, it says alot about this clinics internal standards. There are plenty of other reputable veterinarians in the area, I will be seeking care elsewhere Im sure they will offer some canned response to this post but they will not be able to deny this happened. read more

We've been taking our pets (5 dogs, 3 cats) here for almost 25 years. We loved Dr. Lovers and were sad when he retired, but their current doctors are also amazing. Dr. Schmidt literally saved our bulldog's life when he had heat stroke and we rushed him there while he was seizing. Dr. Gordon is great, as are all of the other Dr.'s we've seen. The front desk is always friendly and professional. ALL vet care is expensive (we've had multiple surgeries and specialists), which is why we make sure we have good Pet Insurance, so we don't have to make medical decisions based on price. read more

I have tried giving this place chance after chance only to get scammed over and over. They add on any service just to rack up your bill. Vaccines you don't need/have already gotten, unnecessary tests, etc - finally brought in my dog when he got conjunctivitis and they decided to run a $120 test to see if he has an ulcer. He has no symptoms other than one red eye and yellowish eye boogers. Truly unbelievable. Didn't even present the test as an option either. Guess what? No ulcer! Shocking! Eye drops for conjunctivitis $270 later. And to no surprise they tried to sell us on more vaccines. Will be getting a new vet. Got the recommendation to go there in the first place from a shelter which is shocking. read more

Obscenely expensive - charged us $500 for a 20 minute visit where they examined a dog's eye and ear and prescribed some ointment. Service seems friendly and competent but the pricing is horrific - apparently this is a big corporation known for taking over local vet clinics and jacking up the prices. Beware! read more

We've been with them for 20 years. They were so sweet and caring when we recently had to let our deer Rosie go. They met her at the door with two jars of treats and had a room ready with tissues, a Care Bears blanket covered with treats and gave us as much time as we needed before and after. After treating my dog the doctor called and recommended pain meds for him. When I went to get the meds they said I could not have them because I had an outstanding bill. ( We had seen the vet 2 days before and this made for an outstanding bill ). They never discussed how much the bill would be and expected payment ( $900.00) before you leave the office. The fact that they chose having to have FULL payment before giving my dog meds for his pain is absolutely terrible. On top of that for two days they called and texted for their money. We have been going there for years and have never not paid our bill. Please take your dog to a caring vet who considers your dog's wellbeing not not money first. They are also extremely expensive, never discussed what procedures coast and then hit you with a bill that they expect you to just pay before walking out. I'm so disappointed in them. After all these years of going there I will never go back there again and am going to get in touch with the company who owns them. read more

When my little boy Romeo the toy poodle has a health issue I know he will be treated with the best possible expertise and love. We have had very unfortunate experiences with bringing our Dog to this facility. They are very fiscally driven and disregard proper service. They are more worried about building a significant bill to surprise you with then treating the animals with care. We brought our puppy there for all of her first vaccinations/appointments and we almost always had a different doctor that had to meet her for the first time which makes it difficult because every doctor suggests something different. I recommend asking for a bill for every visit prior to the visit as there is always a surprise built in. We have been forced to take our dog elsewhere after one too many erroneous charges and a serious lack of connection with our animal. I do not mind spending endlessly on our dog, but the service needs to align with the cost. Here it definitely does not. read more

My husband and I are experienced dog owners (4 dogs in total in the past 25 years), we have been taking our pups to VCA Davis for the past 9-10 years. Dr. Schmidt is our primary vet, but we have also seen Dr. Gordon, and Dr. LaMattina. Our dogs were always provided with excellent care by all three. Whether our dogs needed diagnostic services, surgery, or end of life care, the team at VCA was responsive, compassionate, and not pushy. The front desk staff and techs are lovely and very accommodating. About the cost, veterinary care is not cheap ANYWHERE; but frankly, having had experience with other local hospitals and emergency facilities I can say with confidence that VCA's prices are reasonable in comparison. VCA also offers a monthly care plan that make their services even more accessible. I would not think twice about recommending the practice. read more

We took our cat in he had a limp. We asked to check his rear paw, clip his non retractable claws ( he's polydactyl) and clean his ears. Got a cal minutes later that our cat did not want to be checked, they were afraid of him. We were asked to come get him. They gave us pain med but offered x rays and bloodwork. None of the services were done and they charged $179.00 which I paid. We found a thorn in his pad. When they called to follow up I advised we felt ripped off and asked for partial refund, meds were never used either. They refused any refund. Will never go back read more

I can't recommend VCA Davis enough. I live in Norwalk so the location is a bit out of the way for me but it's well worth it. Originally, I would always request the same Dr (because he's great) but over time I've learned they're all great and you can't go wrong! They consistently work with my schedule and have made time for me when one of my pets has needed an urgent appointment. They have been SO kind and SO realistic about treatment options and finances. When I first adopted a senior cat (at 10-11 years old) they were great about explaining to me what really needed to be done and what things were truly optional (things like teeth extractions or extra diagnoses for her presumed cerebellar hypoplasia). I really appreciated that they didn't shame me for not being able to spend thousands of dollars on procedures that weren't totally necessary for my cat to have a good quality of life. When my senior cat was having bladder issues, they were GREAT about giving me options at different price points and explaining the benefits of each. In the end, I was able to treat it through prescription diet and was able to avoid VERY expensive surgery. Today, another cat was having chronic stomach trouble and couldn't keep any food down (in the midst of a pandemic, of course!). They squeezed me in for a same day appointment and treated us with such great care. The doctors are so kind and helpful. read more

Drs Gordon, Berkowitz, Scott & others (vets & staff) were great over the decades. Today's unimaginably negative experience makes it clear: not returning. Today they were beyond disappointing and just plain rude. They presumed & assumed my question for a vet; based on guessing- I was lectured and lectured and lectured- without the opportunity to speak my one question. weird. & I was told the vet was in busy "in sessions" till 9 PM today and will call me at nine; but that was not true -the vet stopped at 8. I did errands until 850pm and then waited for the 9 PM call- which never happened. Dr. Gil is very thorough, but holy hell this place will run you into bankruptcy, and they'll shake you down to get paid. I was emailed and texted twice about a bill in a less than 24 hour period, and when I saw I was being charged $135 for cytology I never requested and a "he's doing much better" comment from the vet, I was upset, especially when the first visit was over $900. When I called to complain about the charge for a follow up (I've gone to VCA for years and only in the last couple of years did they charge for follow up visits) I was told by the manager that $135 was standard for a follow up visit that he said could have skipped, knowing my dog was doing better (he had allergies that turned into a skin/ear infection). I work in medicine but anyone could have told you he was doing better. I didn't need the follow up, but Dr Gil was pretty insistent that I come two weeks after to check on him, so that's what I did. I have friends who are vets who don't charge for follow ups. I like Dr. Gil but the management is cold and only cares about payment. Time for a new vet. read more

I'm giving one star only in memory to my late dog ! I visited this animal hospital of trying to find an answer for my dogs loss of fur and subsequent sores around his his body. The attending veterinarian took samples and said it was a bacterial infection they gave me pills they gave him a shot and I'm fortunately that did not work so I did some research and my conclusion was correct in first place was correct he was from sebaceous Adenitous they failed miserably to diagnosis then had the nerve to charge me 500+ US dollars. I have been so happy with my choice in VCA Davis Animal Hospital. I signed up my pup for the puppy care plan plus a spay and am receiving such great service. All her health check ups are included in the plan as well as vaccines + spay. Not only that, there are several other tests included in the plan. I received a personal call from my pup's vet Dr. Gordon following her first vaccines under my care. It doesn't get any more personalized and better than that! We have been unlucky in that my pup ingested rat poison and with the combination of the Emergency Care in Norwalk and VCA Davis, the doctors listened to my concerns and covered all the bases for my pup's health. I am pleased to say she is doing really well just days after the poisoning. I don't know what I would do without a great vet for my beloved girl. And if it costs more than other places, so be it, because she is getting great service. Email appt reminders and care plan app is a huge plus!! read more

This vet is highly expensive and doesn't consider alternative medicine. My dog had a ligament tear and after much research I could buy a brace which is highly effective. They only wanted to recommend surgery at $4000. My dog is 11 1/2 years old. They charge without telling you prices beforehand. it is clean. Unless you have money to spend, look elsewhere. read more

The Manager has infected the entire staff with arrogance, rudeness, and they only care about what you are willing to pay. My pets both DIED, and weren't even acknowledged. They also weren't known by name after over 15 years!! There is ONE, SINGLE good veterinarian. That is all. One who cares. The rest are OBNOXIOUS, and if you want to be treated badly, then go there. I am just trying to warn you. My cat Blue was on a lethal, high dose of insulin that I later found out "could have killed him." They are neither experienced, nor amicable. I know. I spent tens of thousands of dollars there - and I have only myself to blame. But, I can still warn you - and when I do adopt again, I will not step foot in that place, "VCA Davis Animal Hospital." THEY ARE ALL ABOUT MONEY!! I took my two cats here mainly because they accept the Care Credit card but found out soon they do not treat their client's with any compassion. My cats don't get sick often but I still treat them with flea/tick preventative meds because I foster other kittens sometimes. They would not sell me the flea/tic med stuff but once unless I paid them for an office visit too. Other vets do not treat their customers like this, once established with a vet.. most will sell you this kind of stuff without an office visit. Also, this place has a HORRIBLE reputation in general. GO ELSEWHERE. I finally found another vet nearby who takes the Care Credit card... Always trying to up sell! Had the same Vet for 20 years in Fairfield - never felt like he was trying to sell me anything -just took great care of our pets and charged fairly. That is not the case here unfortunately. Moved to Stamford and tried VCA Davis upon reading reviews and went for the first "free" visit. It has been anything but free! Docs are nice and knowledgeable but always trying to sell unnecessary tests and services. Have been giving them the benefit of the doubt for the past year but today's experience will be the last. Double charged and upcharged for tests we didn't need, I had to ask for his meds, which was the initial reason for the visit and then the tech sent us home with the wrong meds. I'm done! The doctors are okay and I trusted them with my pets care. What ended up happening to my pet isn't why I am writing this review. Davis has gone downhill at an extremely fast rate. The practice manager is one of the most arrogant and egotistical people I have ever met. I overheard him yelling and putting down a staff member, three feet away from clients, it was a really terrible situation to witness. If the place was better manged with competent staff they would probably be doing fine but the care provided at the cost they charge is totally not worth it. read more

What a terrible vet. I took my dog in for urine in his blood. $904 later they took a urine sample and xrays and the vet told me she could not even see much in the X-ray bc my dog's bladder was to small and he had too much feces present. My dog had this issue two years ago and when I took him to my vet where I used to live it only cost me $500 for the same tests plus bloodwork and I was provided with actual results and findings. Plus, the vet completely lacks empathy and has a terrible bed side manner. I've visited here in the past and did not like my experience but gave them one more try. Last time I brought my dog in for a drooling issue and said I wasn't sure if he even needed to be seen. They said they would send a tech out to see me but next thing I knew I had a 5 minute review w the same vet above and was charged $100. Find other vets people. I have been very impressed with the quality of care I have reeceived. Dr. Schmidt is amazing! She takes time to answer questions, is thorough and knowledgeable. I happened to need a vet on the weekend and was lucky enough to find her. One of my dogs has had allergies for five years and in one visit I learned there are remedies and she is committed to finding answers. Most of all when she says she will call she always does. I've been a long time client here and can't say enough about everyone here. I have a very VERY difficult dog who gets very agitated when she get's to the vet (and in general). They take such good care of here when other people don't even like to deal with her. Even when she obstructed and I had to bring her to the emergency center in Norwalk I got a call from one of her Doctors calling to see how I was doing because she knew how much I love my dog. They told me that they would follow up with the emergency hospital as well. It's nice to have people who care on the side of your pet. read more

I relocated from Los Angeles to Stamford a few months ago and upon first meeting their hospital manager and veterinarian, I knew I wanted them to take care of my pets. My first experience with Davis was boarding and my very first impression was that their reception staff was extremely warm and hospitable. My check-in was easy and when I picked my pets up, their carriers were clearly labeled and one of their Staff members even helped me out to the car (without me asking.) I am very knowledgeable about the VCA brand, and I chose the location as my veterinarian of choice because I know their Staff would treat my pets how they treat their own pets. read more

We took our Yorkie to see Dr. Berkowitz for the first time based on a recommendation since moving to the area. Dr. Berkowitz greeted our nervous doggie in the reception area and coaxed her - you could see the fear leave her little body! Upon examination, he was very diligent about her records and asked a lot of questions about her health, eating and behaviors which I really liked because I felt he was getting to know us and our pet as future long term clients. We did not feel rushed like we sometimes feel with our human doctor! Our Yorkie left with a perfect bill of health and we even made an appointment for her first dental. Their prices are comparable to other veterinarians but the medical expertise and thoroughness far surpassed our trips to other vets. We will be back. read more

Stay Away! I took my healthy 1 1/2 year old dog there for a simple check when he stopped eating. I told the vet that my dog was new to the area and had been very healthy (and I expected that he may have gotten too used to human food.) Everything I to,d her was ignored. Instead, she ordered $400 of blood tests. When the tests came back negative she wanted to do more tests and said he could have cancer. $750 later I decided to take matters into my own hands and feed him a bit of burger with his dog food. He ate it up. When I complained to the office manager and later the medical director they were full of excuses. Stay away from this place. I wish I had seen these reviews earlier. My experience with VCA Davis Animal Hospital has been dreadful as of late. Our 11 year old cat has kidney failure. Well, as most of you here have stated, the medical care and concern for our beloved pet have been placed on the back burner due to billing. We were all set to put our cat down, since she is dying and has a week maximum. We scheduled for tomorrow, crying all the way throughout this week. I called today to confirm and low and behold Peter called it off since he wants another $500.00 from our visit last week. Again, a dying cat that is suffering and Peter called it off for monies sake!!! My children are devastated. There is a great chance according to the doctor she will die in our care and to wrap her up and place her in a cold area. What!? How sad that we put a price on an invaluable life. I am an avid German Shepherd owner having raised seven since moving to Riverside. Our dogs have been treated only at VCA Davis for years. We could not possibly be happier or feel more confident with the hospital. Through the years every emergency has been treated with extreme care and expertise. Dr. Jason Berkowitz has watched over and taken outstanding care of our dogs. He is so skilled and gentle that our present dog, Echo, (who has had several operations already), enters the office with great enthusiasm greeting all the staff and the doctors with squeals of joy. Two years ago when the time had come to say good bye to one of our old shepherds who was too weak to walk into the office, Dr. Berkowitz and the technician quietly climbed into our SUV. Loki died in the car with her head in my lap. She never felt any fear - she thought she was just going on a car trip along with her old friends. from Davis. When we lost another shepherd to cancer last year, Omar, one of the kind and loving technicians sketched a beautiful picture of Meka as a gift for us. He too always took excellent care of our dogs. The staff at the reception desk are polite and helpful which is a definite plus. But I chose Davis specifically because of the training, skill, and experience of the doctors. VCA is very expensive...much more than vets outside the Stamford area. I don't mind paying more provided the service is of good quality and in the case of VCA, it seems to depend on the day and which vet happens to treat your pet. On one visit, the vet treating my dog was absolutely great, but on the next visit, we were seen by another vet who couldn't care less about treating my dog. As I was leaving after receiving a treatment, I remembered to mention that spots had appeared on her nose fully expecting the vet to take a look. I was surprised that she (the vet) expressed absolutely no interest in examining her nose. Instead, she instructed me to "keep an eye on it...maybe take a picture to see if the spots change" Similarly, the people on the front desk can be either very friendly or totally disinterested. Sorry, but such inconsistency in the vets and service is not for me! read more

We would like to express our deep appreciation for the emergency medical care we received for our 7 month old corgi, Casey. We rushed him to your hospital with a serious undiagnosed condition and the team of Dr. Kotwal, Dr. Gordon and Omar quickly took action processing blood work and making an informed evaluation. They also helped facilitate the additional care he required from another hospital. Dr. Gordon consulted with the specialist each day and followed up on Casey's progress with us. We are sure our pup recovered so quickly due to this team effort. Once again, as in the past, VCA Davis has come through for us. We have used VCA Davis Animal hospital for decades. The delightful vets and their interest in the well being of our newest addition to our family has been awesome. First appointment: Dr. Gordon took her time to get to know Sandy, a large Labrador retriever puppy. Dr. Gordon sat on the floor with Sandy during the exam and kept Sandy calm with her charming techniques to get to know our LARGE puppy. Sandy was very relaxed and no nervousness due to Dr. Gordon and the assistance. I will only go to the vets here and will always try to see Dr. Gordon. read more

My husband and I brought our dog here a few months ago for boarding. We chose this place because they had adequate-sized runs for a big yellow lab like our's and their prices were not too bad in comparison to other facilities in the area. Our dog's stay seemed to be okay, from what we could tell when we picked him up (he wasn't overly clingy, didn't seem sick etc). Aside from the fact that every single person on staff didn't so much as look at our dog when we dropped him off, we decided that this place might work out again in the future (hey, as long as they take care of our dog and keep him safe, I guess we can deal with a lack of affection towards our dog, and maybe everyone was just having a busy, bad day). So, we decided to use them for boarding again, just this past weekend. The person who leashed him up to take him to the back seemed indifferent and had no intention of greeting our dog or letting our dog greet/sniff her. And I noticed that the staff showed this behavior to every dog that was being dropped off or picked up while we were there. So this seemed to be a reocurring theme at this place. You would think that when someone is dropping their dog off to an environment unfamiliar to them, that the staff would maybe show an ounce of affection to the undoubtedly anxious/nervous dog. And come on, aren't people that work at a vet hospital actually supposed to like animals? But, we didn't have high expectations in this area from our first experience with the staff so we sort of said..."oh well". We left them clear and detailed instructions on his feeding ( I even separated each meal into clearly labeled baggies). It wasn't until we returned to pick up our dog, that we realized we had made a mistake in bringing him back here. First of all, the same girl who was there when we dropped our dog off, brought him back out to us and seemed extra agitated and impatient with us and our dog. And then, she brought out his toy ......and his leftover food....that had not been fed to him, still in the baggie that I had clearly labeled. They had only fed him ONE MEAL IN 24 HOURS. I asked the girl how this could have happened and instead of an apology, all I got was a response that insinuated we had probably really left them too much food and this was just extra of food. And then, she blamed the boy working behind the desk, complaining to us how he has been making mistakes all day. And with that, she walked away from us. I then spoke to the boy behind the desk and he he proceeded to blame the girl! So, it was just a big blame game, very unprofessional and no remorse from either of them. He did end up refunding me my money but, that doesn't make up for the neglect and unprofessionalism they showed. Even though my dog was not harmed by this...I mean, he was absolutely starving but, he recovered, I do not want to take my chances on what else they may neglect to do for my dog and that is why I will never bring my dog back there again. What a poorly run and unprofessional business. I just wanted to warn everyone in case they ever think of leaving their dog here...there is no telling what they may do or forget to do for your dog. read more

First brought our dog here for Saturday emergency when our other vet was closed. We have permanently switched to this veterinarian. The staff is friendly and patient. It's easy to book appointments or to get the vet to call me. There are no stairs, plenty of parking and close highway access. They have separate entrances for cats. They have never tried to "up sell" me anything. My past two vets would put a muzzle on my dog and examine her in a back room. This vet and staff were able to immediately calm my dog so she was examined muzzle free in the exam room with me present. The vet actually sat on the floor to examine my aging dog. The vet identified 3 things past vets did not mentioned but did not require me to treat these things. The vet seemed knowledgeable about both traditional and non-traditional treatments. I did not give them 5 stars because I haven't yet tried their grooming or boarding facilities but I plan do so soon. read more

We have been going to VCA Davis for a number of years. Our regular vet is in Florida and we snow bird here. They have always treated our dog with great care as though it were one of their own pets. Never felt they were upselling, they have always spelled out what tests they were considering and why, leaving us with a clear choice to follow.
