We trusted this clinic with our dog's care for 2-3 years. During that time, he repeatedly suffered from stomach issues, yet no thorough diagnostic testing was performed. We were continuously given medication without a clear explanation of the underlying cause. When we finally sought a second opinion at another veterinary hospital, we were informed that he had advanced stomach cancer as well as kidney disease. We were told that his condition had progressed significantly and that earlier, more comprehensive testing might have made a difference. The prices at Garden State have become untenable. We have 2 cats and a dog that we bring yearly. This last visit (just a routine visit for all 3) cost almost $1000. That is double what we normally pay each year for all 3. On top of that, it felt that the vet was pushing treatments on us just to have us pay more. They said all 3 animals needed their teeth cleaned and pulled. The estimate is almost $2500 per animal. We let the vet know we cannot pay for all 3 and asked if any of the animals needed this treatment sooner (so we could prioritize financially who could get this done). The vet said all 3 need it equally. It felt insensitive to push such expensive treatments on us (not even including the $1000 visit just to have a checkup + some vaccines) and not help us make decisions about what is actually necessary/timely. Most likely will not be coming back here despite using Garden State as our vet for years. read more

Dr. Amy Sclarsky has been with us every step of the way to the very end of our beloved "Petunia". We noticed some weight loss and at 5.5 pounds, every ounce is important. She detected the worst - a tumor. She gave her some steroids to keep her appetite up and it helped for a day or two and she wanted to see Petunia again for some more. We all agreed that chemo was not the way to go. Donna must have been on the phone with her 8 times the past couple days, Last night she took a turn for the worse and Dr. Amy ditched the meeting she was in and rushed down to see us at her office and explained the procedure but we all knew it was time. This was our first visit to this hospital since we had just moved here. Our experience was I would have to say the worst I have ever experienced. The two assistants were very kind and caring. We were there for an End of Life visit which is already emotional. The first vet was rather cold and seemed scared of my dog. I was charged $100 for the exam and over $400 for the end of life service. The exam consisted of the vet listening to my dogs chest. All she could say was well without more tests I can't really say what is wrong as I explained her failing health. My pet gets nervous at the vet (and has never shown any aggression ever) so I was holding her and she had a reaction to the sedative and all the vet could keep yelling was she might bite you! She had no idea what to do and then I assume a senior vet came in to finish and I am not sure if she had a reaction to the drugs or missed the vein but all she could say was oh I am sorry only a small amount of dogs vocalize like this from the medication. She kept repeating herself instead of being any comfort to my pet or myself. If I could do it over I would have for sure used Lap of Love however, I do not get a second chance. It is one thing for it to be a horrible experience for me but to have my pet be so scared and not knowing if she was in pain during this process is something I will never forgive myself for. You would think they would have followed up with an apology or care call but I guess they got our money so that was that. Please do not respond to this message as you do to other comments of this nature. You should be calling me! I should not have to reach out to you! I wish I could Take it all back! I've had excellent experiences with three different Vets so far. I take my Maltese (Tallula) here and I'm confident she gets the best care possible. As a new pet owner, it was trial and error to find the right vet. After the first error/bad experiences, I had to begin again with a new office/initial visit before she could get the vaccinations due. I recommend getting multiple personal vet recs before starting with a new one. I discovered the hard way, that if the first vet office proves to be problematic as mine was, it's a costly mistake in more ways than one. The first vet was unnecessarily expensive plus hard on my puppy for their repeating meds plus unnecessary diagnostic tests that were inappropriate. The change of vet/office requires a repeat start to finish initial visit--which is understandable but as a new owner I was unaware. My 4 lb pup had her spay w/many baby teeth extracted done by Dr Waltzer who has a small dog. Her personal insight/experience has been very helpful. I also had a few immediate visits necessary w/any available vet---a closed eye after a grooming; and, a full night of backward sneezes that sounded like gasping for air to breathe. Both visits were thorough and reassuring. Upon one of those visits, Dr Fisher mentioned her patellas assuming I knew of status but that was the first time I'd learned of one being worse than another. As my dog was still a puppy at the time, I was glad to be made aware of current status so as to do preventive measures as much as possible for any potential concerns down the road. I could not be more disappointed and upset with this hospital. I have taken my dog here for years, he is now 6 years old. He has had horrible paw itching and everytime we took him in, the vet kept saying it was allergies and continued to charge us hundreds a month for allergy medication that did not help. This was for about 2 years straight!! Then the itching got so much worse we decided to try a new vet and the new vet immediately told us he had a horrible paw infection. She gave us medicine and within just a few days my dog is no longer itching and finally is comfortable in his skin! i will not be taking my dog back here. Total waste of money. My new vet in Philadelphia truly cared about my dog and wanted to help him and actually did! She was so friendly and kind to him too. Please be careful going to garden state vet!!! You cant not trust comprehensive care They showed all their excitement towards the fact im giving them more business, gave 0 solutions other than the most expensive. Their coach the parking lot girls on selling, did they weigh dog do anything? Who knows. Did they ask any meaningful questions, no. They gave my dog pills they admitted are useless, did not give prednisone. Why? Pay twice. They should serve you not enslavement to them. Your cheap response is an admission of my accuracy. We've had pretty good experiences here, the staff is pretty friendly. They occassionally keep you waiting depending on when your appointment is, but the care itself has been fine, which is the important part. They just moved back to the "new"/revamped location, which is nice, they even had an open house to let you wander all through it (which is always encouraging since that IMHO tends to mean that they have less to hide). The only negative I can really say about this place is the parking, there are a couple spots out front that can be tough to get in and out of and the one way side access to the small lot in the back can be tricky on a weekend. We just took our chocolate lab to Garden State Vet for the first time. Due to Covid they allowed one of us to go in with him so my husband did since our dog is strong and pulls a bit. My husband said it was like night and day compared to our usual vet. The usual vet wasn't thorough in checking our lab or keeping good records of our visits. I left another practice a few years ago and found them and had no regrets since. they have taken such good care of my dogs and always leave decisions up to you, they don't pressure into expensive treatments but give you all your options. I have been taking my dog here for 14 years! I can't imagine taking him anywhere else. All of the veterinarians and office staff are friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming, caring and supportive. Our most recent visit required social distancing and they came right to my car to pick up my dog and take him in for his appointment. The vet called and discussed everything with me, spoke to me about her concerns, and discussed treatment options. They never push anything. Been to GSAH a few times, I've taken both my Labradoodle and my short haired kitten here. First off they are great in an emergency. When my poor little Simba (the kitten) woke up in respiratory distress with ocular drainage and sneezing nonstop they took me as a walk-in with no issues. Since this was an unexpected emergency they provided care and allowed me to only pay a portion of the cost upfront and bill me for the rest. Simba is doing much better thanks to the expedient care provided. They are open every day of the week which is a huge convenience as well. The staff is super friendly and call you to remind you of upcoming appointments or if you have pending results for your pet. On the flip side they are EXPENSIVE and charge you for everything!!! A mere visit starts off at $58 with additional services, medications and vaccinations piling on to the bill. Never have I been here and not given a few hundred bucks for each visit. Though they give free samples of some products it surely does not offset the bill you acquire each and every time. Also I sometimes feel like I'm paying for tests and services that aren't necessary. As a new pet owner I purchased every vaccine and test they suggested only to find out afterwards that it wasn't an absolute necessity for my breed/ kind of pet. Make sure you're well read on your pet's needs before coming here. Overall I'll continue using them in a pinch or when emergencies arise but with a growing pet family I need a more economical option for routine checkups and services. read more

I have been bringing my dog and 2 cats to GSAH for several years. My boy cat, Gatsby, had a number of major medical issues including a urinary blockage that required surgery and eventually large cell lymphoma. Dr Waltzer, Dr. Leff and the rest of the doctors and techs were extremely supportive, informative, and compassionate. I always knew Gatsby was in very caring and skilled hands and I will be forever grateful for the care he was given over the course of his illness and his short life. read more

My olive had congestive heart failure and suffocated fr fluid build up in her lungs; problem w her long time vet lying to us in collingswood nj (by the way---Rothman animal hospital in Collingswood is the WORST- they lied to me about the cardiologist being on vacation for 2 months when he explained rothman never ever called him; turns out rothman was trying to get more cardio patients amassed to make bringing a cardio in worth THEIR while. They kicked us out because I confronted them and after I spent THousands of dollars there over the years. Dr Esser and Dr Garcia both did this together along w ruthless office mgr Shelly ) So we left and called around. At 8 am I begged garden state and mount laurel animal hospital to see my beloved dog. Mount laurel refused us saying they would not take customers fr another vet practice which is totally stupid to me. So we called garden state since it was across the street fr us. They would only fit her in at 3 pm though I called 4 times saying it was an emergency. After oxygen mask and giving her lasix- I finally called redbank ER and they told me to rush her there as my poodle needed a stronger diuretic called torsemide that garden state did not carry. The dr released my Olive saying she was stable enough to go the ER. She died in my car. She had what seemed like a heart attack. She had labored breathing for 24 Hours before she died. Had she gotten the torsemide she probably would've lived. I at least did not want my beloved pet to suffer like this. How can people be so callous and cruel and operate a business like this? I don't fully blame garden state but they should've rushed us to the ER immediately instead of having us wait there and have her go thru expensive treatments and tests which were of no use. I also blame Rothman for being so dishonest. I wish these hospitals were examined more closely for their ethics, morals and business practices. read more

Two years ago I took my difficult cat here for a leg injury and they were great. However, they really try to gouge you with expensive tests. She had a pulled muscle $300 later. The same thing happened the next two times. I had very young, new vets. Their first "jump-to" again was tests totaling almost $600. Neither time was my pet cured of anything. What has happened to compassion and experienced intuition? I am actively seeking an older vet who uses their years of familiarity with animal health and make the pet's comfort and well-being the priority, not fleecing the pet parents for everything they're worth. read more

Awhile ago my dog cylar started getting really red swollen eyes and hive like bumps all over his body. I took him to the vet at the spca because they take walk ins and they gave me generic eye drops for him to take...it didn't work and I ended up having to take him back - they suddenly in that 2 week time changed their policy and no longer took walk ins...bye bye, jerks. I had to go on vacation the next day so I informed my roommate to keep giving him the drops and let me know if he got worse. my poor doggy was so sick looking when I got back it made me cry when I saw him. I found another vet in media and took him a couple times...they gave him a big work up gave him shots and medicines, but couldn't figure out what this mystery disease was. after about a month and a half of this mystery illness my friend suggested I take cylar to garden state animal hospital and Dr. Fisher so I made an appointment. I must say, I hate going into New Jersey so I avoid it at all costs but I really trust my friends advice so I took her up on it. after about 20 minutes of looking at cylar she went into the back and got a book on diseases and showed me what she though he had. sadly its an incurable disease that can't be treated and pops up every now and then but she figured it out! she also took a biopsy and confirmed it. I also must mention that all the people that work here are extremely nice and friendly, they call you with results and really do seem to care about every case that comes in. I totally love my current vet as well so I'm a little torn but I won't hesitate to take my dog here over any other vet if its anything other than a yearly check up. read more

After having quite a few bad experiences at our previous vet's office, we decided to taking our little man to Garden State Animal Hospital. We heard many good reviews from friends. I called to schedule an appointment, and the lady was really friendly on the phone. I told her that our last vet didn't really seem comfortable handling our pup - he's an 80lb. Am. Staffy/Neopolitan Mastiff mix, and I had explained the couple of experiences we had. She told me not to worry, many of the girls that work there have pitties and other bully breed pups, so that made me feel a lot better. She offered to put us in for an early appointment so there wouldn't be too many other dogs in the waiting room since our guy gets really excitable. No one ever suggested that before, and I really appreciated it. It makes for a less stressful situation for everyone. We took him to his appointment, and when we arrived, everyone LOVED him, and he loved them right back! I wanted to cry because I was so happy we found a veterinarian who understood our dog and knew how to take care of him. I'm pretty sure he fell in love with his doctor. He didn't want to leave her side, and that has NEVER happened with anyone else before. It was like night and day compared to the previous vet's office. Overall, if you have a pup who gets excitable or may not get a long with other dogs, or if the get anxious or scared, this vet will go the extra mile to make sure they help and make your visit very easy. Oh, and they're prices are extremely reasonable, based on what I have paid to the other vet. Our bill was basically half of what we used to pay. So I have this cat Ipacac right. And one day he stopped eating. Stuff got all discombobulated in his private boy cat parts and he stopped peeing and pooing properly. He is so smart that he made us follow him to the litter box and cried while he strained to go. Of course it was after my regular vet was already closed for the day and of course it was a Friday night when I had plans. But I love my cat. I love him more than I love most people. So I took him to Penn's Matthew J Ryan emergency vet. After about $2200, three visits, multiple procedures, a partially shaved cat and four different types of medicine my cat was still not better and I didn't have a diagnoses. So I finally took my friend's advice and made an appointment at Garden State Animal Hospital with her vet Dr. Fisher. Dr. Fisher requested the records (that Penn took four hundred years to finally fax over) and read them diligently. I brought Ipacac to her and she gave him an exam and talked to me, like a lot. She did a few tests since some time had gone by and then called me with the results and talked to me on the phone. She suggested all sorts of things Penn hadn't mentioned including force feeding, special foods, baby food prunes for constipation, and eventually a teeth cleaning that cost about 1/4 of what Penn wanted to charge me. Dr. Fisher knows her shit (sorry to be crass here but she's just that good). You can tell she stays up to date on new information and I have heard story after story of how she helped animals that many vets couldn't diagnose. I now happily drive over the bridge and navigate Jersey roads to go see Dr. Fisher. read more

They offered for me to go out the back door, brought all the paper work to me in the back, and gave us a plaque with his paw print with a sweet quote. Took 4 days and at least that many phone calls to get scheduled for a recheck of ear infection. Waited on hold for over 10 minutes just to speak to reception. Our dog is a JERK at the vet's office. Despite his less than sunny demeanor, the folks here do such a great job with him. Dr. Sclarsky is pretty no nonsense and, as a result our dog usually relents and allows his exams (etc) to proceed. If it weren't for her, I'm convinced our boy wouldn't even be with us today. He became really ill over a year ago and we thought the time had come to make that tough decision to let him go and end his suffering. Dr. Sclarsky encouraged us to do one more test, just to be sure we felt we had sufficiently exhausted our options (and so that we would feel better about making that tough decision). It turned out he had a condition that could be managed (and has been for almost 1.5 years). Dr. Sclarsky is great about following up quickly with results and monitoring what is (isn't) normal for our dog (and treating accordingly). This is the best veterinary practice we've gone to. Even though my dog is a jerk, I still love him:). It's great to have full trust in the person who is caring for one of my family members. read more

I started going here since I moved to New Jersey. They helped me through the most scary part of my puppies life- when he got parvo. Dr Lach explained everything to me and was there no matter when I needed my questions answered. She always reassured me and has great bed side manner. She is kind and compassionate. My puppy loves all the staff members there. He struggled his last visit there due to his hospitalization but staff was accommodating and reassuring. I also can pick up medications with ease. I take my two dogs to this vet and they've been wonderful almost every time. My pups had a good experience with neutering/spaying and regular vet check ups. I think we've seen every vet there, and they've all been helpful, friendly and really loving to my dogs. The front desk staff and vet techs are nice also, and they never mind cleaning up my dog's pee when she gets over-excited (every time). Recently, I had to schedule a last-minute visit because my dog was having stomach trouble and I was hoping to see someone before work. They were able to fit me in easily and within an hour I was walking out with peace of mind and medication. My only bad experience was when my one dog ate something he shouldn't have and got very disoriented and sick. They saw us but the vet there was pretty unhelpful, I think because they were closing in 5 minutes, and he spent a lot of valuable time explaining nothing. They sent us to Red Bank, which was fine, and after some convincing, just billed us later. I wish they had been a little more compassionate because we were clearly really worried about our pup. Other than that, everything has been great! read more

Because of Covid, we can't go in with our fur babies, but they make sure you're informed about the visit -- what they did, how my baby boy reacted, etc. He was so scared going in but was a happy boy coming out. I would say it's more like 4.5 stars. I only have one sight negative/concern that may not be entirely valid, see bottom. Unfortunately, I had 0 had to be here 2x in a week. One was for my cat who got sent here by the regular vet because her kidney values were very high and they thought she might need hospitalized for fluids, etc. (Thankfully she did not.) Considering it was "emergency," with the visit, meds, etc it wasn't too bad price wise. The second was for a feral cat in a colony I help with. We found him immobile in one of the shelters and while he sadly had to be put down, at least Garden State was able to humanely euthanize him and not leave him suffering. Both visits the staff were friendly, fast and efficient. The vets and tech have are very caring toward the pets. Now one of my others (I have 4) just got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I'm considering the radio iodine treatment, and if I move forward will most likely choose Garden State. My only hesitation for an emergency situation is that both times the emergency vets seem like it couldn't have been too long since they graduated. While they both seemed knowledeable and were certainly caring, in a true medical emergency I think I would expect/hope for somebody more experienced. Overall, really terrific place and team.
