I hate to call myself an Italian ice snob, but I am. Growing up in NJ, I used to eat a lot of good Italian ice and this is the real deal- tiny paper cup and all! There is a good selection of standard flavors like lemon, cherry and watermelon, but they also have coconut, mango and my personal favorite...almond. The only possible "drawback" is that there is no mixing of flavors. I don't blame them for enforcing this rule and honestly it forces me to be decisive. The name "Veccihitto's" is located under the definition of creamy. Just FYI. I've never really experienced Italian ice--until I visited Vecchitto's for the first time this afternoon. Wow. Have you tasted this? It's one thing to have good flavor, which Vecchitto's does, but it's an entirely different thing to have a remarkable texture. Like, what is this? How have I not licked this before? (No, that doesn't sound wrong in this context.) Again, wow. This texture is really hard to describe but it is so smooth, so creamy, and so melt-in-your-mouth. I tried almond and absolutely loved the unique flavor, which is something along the lines of sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and just refreshing. It doesn't leave a weird taste in your mouth or make you regret tasting it any way. (I often forgo sweet ices because I end up burping them back up throughout the day and regret my life choices at that point. But not so with Vecchitto's.) I'm upset with myself I haven't tried this sooner because I absolutely love it in every way. When I visited, just after it opened (at 12pm) to treat myself after sitting in a long conference, the server who helped me was extremely kind and made several great suggestions on which flavor to have. He was really efficient, too. Case in point, I hadn't even looked up from getting my cash out of my wallet when me sweet little scoop in paper cup was waiting for me right there. Oh, and did I mention reasonable prices, too? Sure it's a little paper cup for $2, but it's a solid scoop of this rich-texture ice. It's the perfect amount (size and money). Aside from perfect deliciousness and excellent service, the only thing I wish Vecchitto's had was some seating inside. The shop is relatively small--I can envision it getting really crowded at peak hours--and the walls are lined with ice boxes, but I could see room for a couple of tables, at least. That would be perfect to sit down at to thoroughly enjoy my ice, though I doubt the ice would last long before I licked it to death. (Again, that doesn't sound wrong in this context.) Definitely do not make the mistake I did and wait to try Vecchitto's. Go experience the real deal for Italian ice!! read more

I don't get the fanfare for this place other than this is the only joint in town serving Italian ice. I sampled the mango and not good...I tried the watermelon and tasted fake...tried my studs raspberry not the freaky blue kind and nothing to write home about. I figured, hey, let's go with traditional simple lemon-can't go wrong with that, right? Ridiculously tart and minimal lemon flavor. Yes they are Italian but maybe they need a refresher course from Libby's in New Haven or Monte Leon's in Cobble Hill, New York, both heavily Italian infested! Middletown offers some great eats but this place is no breath of fresh air by any means and the guy serving? The day I went with my stud, he didn't even crack a smile and didn't deserve the $1.50 tip! And as for my Italian ice, I couldn't even finish it and dumped it in a catch basin...the tartiness could maybe clean up the sewer! Texture was just ok and flavor was terribly lacking Also, what's up with the no mixing? Afraid that people may discover that too many flavors are not that good at once? I was initially apprehensive as some reviews said the cups deteriorated quickly. Well, that review is either outdated or they've improved their cups. I've walked on hot, humid summer days for well over half an hour and the paper cup was just fine. Granted, the treat may have been long gone! This is my first time having I suppose what you might call real Italian ice. Compared to the hard stuff I remember of elementary school Vecchitto's is smooth and creamy. At $2 for a small and $3 for a large I've become a repeat customer because it's a budget friendly treat. I'm also a big fan of the $2 for its portion size. It's great for those of us who want to treat ourselves without overindulgence that leaves you feeling almost bloated. I'm also a huge fan that it's not overly sweet. The flavors are certainly there but it's mellow and refreshing. I feel like I can appreciate the flavor I'm having as opposed to just tasting straight sugar. It's not far off main street whatsoever! Easy to find. So far I've tried Almond, Pineapple, and Watermelon and I plan to try to them all. The Almond is outstanding, very unique. Between Pineapple and Watermelon, I'd pick the Pineapple again. I'm not done yet though! read more

This is one of my favorite places ever. Whenever I drive by I always look to see if it's open and I'll always go if it is. The Italian ice is so delicious and very light. Watermelon is my personal favorite flavor but the cherry and mango flavors are also excellent. My only complaint is that it's only open from mid May to mid September and as a Wesleyan student, I wish it was open more because I would definitely go during the school year. read more

Vechitto's Italian Ice is a landmark of this town, and for a lot of us that grew up here, that first Cup meant the start of a new summer. That first taste also brings back fond memories of going there as kids, and then passing down that tradition with newer generations. An important trait of any good, high quality food service establishment is the way they care about their customers, especially those that may have conditions, such as allergies. Our Daughter has nut allergy, and we sometimes have a difficult time finding places where we can all go and enjoy a great, safe treat after the beach, or dinner. Vecchitto's is amazing. No where else in the state can you get summer happiness in a cup for under $2 (except their other location and their trucks)! It's a no muss no fuss simple place to grab a wonderful treat. It's creamy and delicious - every year we can't wait for it to open and are sad to see it close for the season. To anyone that thinks the flavors are limited - They change daily. You want different flavors - go back another day. If grew up with a more granular texture of Italian ice you probably grew up with the garbage from the freezer section of your local grocery store. Italian ice is supposed to be smooth and Vecchitto's is PERFECT! If you don't like the parking just park at the paint place on the corner that's never open and walk. If you think the paper cups are flimsy you clearly don't know they are vital to the "squish and roll" technique that allows you to get every last delicious drop. I'm so sorry if you didn't enjoy Vecchitto's, but that's more for the rest of us!!! I can't go quite as crazy as some have, but this is a nice dessert option, especially if you only got $2 in your pocket. Indeed, that amount of money gets you a sizable, hand-held, refreshing dessert. But in all honesty, I'd rather have the Marino's Italian ice from the grocery store. Sorry, but my favorite flavor is cherry, and their cherry was very medicine-y upon tasting it. So I actually had the chocolate instead, and while generally pleasant, I felt like I was eating frozen watered-down Nestle Quik. For $2 though, hard to complain. Think that some of the guys have been working there since it opened in the 1930s. Maybe they toss them in the freezer during the off season and thaw them out once it warms up. You definitely get the impression that nothing has changed. They do Italian Ices and that is it, no sprinkles. Anyway, my choice is the lemon ice. The service is fine and very friendly, there is limited parking, the prices are fair, the ices are really good. Best italian ice in the state.. Been coming here for 25 years and it is always delicious. I am always trying new italian ice but find myself comparing it to V's.. this is authentic and gourmet Italian ice made the old fashioned way... Get a few pints keep them in a sugar bag in the freezer- it insulates them at the perfect temperature so they stay nice and soft. They usually sell you the pint in a sugar bag anyways! Every flavor is delicious but the Almond/watermelon classics reign supreme in my book followed by coconut/lemonlime/banana/lime/chocolate/root beer etc and in that order. I can't recommend this place enough- people haven't tasted "italian ice" until you have had vecchitto's, anything else is just american hard ice with flavor. BRAVO read more

Went here today for the second time since it opened up this year. Loved it! I used to get the lemon, but the watermelon is by far my favorite! I don't know anyone who dislikes this place. I grew up on this stuff while at the shore in Old Lyme. I honestly never knew about the one in Middletown until some time later in life. They have the best Italian ice I have ever had, and I tend to try them when I see them at different places. All the flavors are good, but only the lemon is great. Vecchittos gives me the happiest day of the year and the saddest day of the year every year. The happiest day is when they open right around memorial day and the saddest is when the close around labor day. As much as i would love to see Vecchittos open all year around theres something about it just open in the summer time that makes its so special and even that much better. The mango and watermelon were fantastic. It's not fake or overly sweet. The texture is good too. It's probably the best I've had on the east coat.(Joe's Italian Ice in LA takes the crown though.)
