Came here for lunch the other day and based on previous reviews I expected good food but not so good customer service. Well...the customer service was definitely lacking, which I wasn't surprised by because this is a thing when you go to west indian restaurants. The lady at the counter literally turned her back to me & began talking after giving the previous customer her food. She then turned around & asked if I had ordered. Ma'am...of course I haven't seeing that she was the only person taking orders. Ok, fine. I order curry goat, something I haven't had in a while, so I was excited (again based on previous reviews). I get home and while the goat itself was tasty and tender. It was the driest meal I've ever had....not a lick of gravy anywhere. Vee's is one of the most authentic Jamaican restaurants in Brooklyn. Definitely recommend it to anyone who's visiting for the food - because it really is THAT good, regardless of what you get. But I'll probably never be back. Having loved ones who have been going to Vee's for a decade plus, they're also not coming back either. We make an effort to support our community but with Vee's, we had to put a stop to it because the service was just atrocious. And look, we're no rookies, and we know the food has always been great which we like to think makes up for the service, however, after one particularly rude encounter, we just made the decision to not come back. Look, I'm not gonna lie, I thought they were being racist towards me because I'm white. BUT now that I've read all the other reviews I realize that they are just as shitty to everyone despite race religion sex politics and whatever. Coincidence I guess? This is what happened; My girlfriend and I enter the dingy but quaint looking restaurant and as usual there is a line at the takeout counter. (probably best way to go!). It's a seat-yourself situation as we know from our many prior visits and is very difficult to flag down a server. We eventually do though through much effort and an unenthusiastic young woman finally shuffles over to take us on as her burden and we begin the long throws of ordering. I ask her politely "whats fresh today? what do you have?" as I've learned to do because they frequently aren't stocked with anything on the menu. She replies that "everything is fresh." But when we try to order she systematically claims to be out of everything we ask for. That means no beans, no rice, no plantains, no chicken, no stew curry. etc.! All she claims to have is curried goat which was like a plate of bones in sauce last time I had it, so we decide to take a minute to talk it over. As we waited we noticed that everyone in the place was eating a variety of fresh meals and I thought, "that's odd..." But then In that same minute a man enters the restaurant and sits down at a table adjacent to us. The same server quickly goes over to him with a menu. He swiftly points to the menu and verbally orders his food with no trouble. A little while later she brings him a giant plate of steaming curried chicken with rice beans and second plate covered with fried plantains! That's exactly what we ordered! So naturally, we up and left feeling alienated and unwanted.. I guess it could be a coincidence? I don't want to accuse anyone of being racist. Maybe Vee's is plagued with some sort brain eating virus that deems its server incapable of doing a good job. There's an amazing uniformity in the reviews here. The consensus is that the food is good and service sucks. I'll tone down both ends of spectrum with major caveat. The caveat is the time I visited - 3 in the morning on the night of J'ouvert. This place is open late anyway, so the hours weren't extraordinary but I suppose I just have lower standards for service after a couple of drinks and a wander around Crown Heights in the middle of the night. The service was indeed slow, and I was served out of order, but I can't say it really bothered me. Seldom have I come out of a Jamacian restaurant in the city amazed at how fast the service was anyway. Also, it being 3 in the morning I clearly was in no hurry. Now on to the food, which I unfortunately ate most of the next day for lunch (did I mention it 3 am when I went there). I thought the rice was pretty disappointing, and didn't carry the strong spices I want with rice and pigeon peas. Chicken was solid though, cooked throughout the night in a parking lot jerk pit. There was a solid crowd in here as well, on a night when suddenly every 99 cent store was selling oxtail and curried goat, so they must be doing something right. Well this place has been a staple in my mom's neighborhood for years and though I have since moved the only thing that has changed is that the place has expanded to include dining in. Its good Jamaican food and all, but depending on who you get, some of the gals behind the counter can be down right nasty. After walking by this place for so long, we decided to give its take-out a try. Upon reading the reviews though we were a bit skeptical - the idea was that if there were at least 4 people in front of us, we were going to give it a pass. It was Sunday night at around 21:40. 2 minutes after we walked in a lady at the counter greeted us and took our orders. Given the late hour we weren't expecting a lot of selection, but they still had what we wanted - jerk & curry chicken. I just left from Vee's and sadly for my stomach, that WILL be the last time going to this so called restaurant. I will never return to this establishment no matter how hungry I am or how good the food may taste. Up until tonight, as you can see from my check-in's, I was very much a regular at Vee's. I fell in love with the smell of the jerk chicken around Labor Day and decided to check it out along with my boyfriend and best friend. My boyfriend and I ordered the jerk chicken and my best friend ordered oxtail. Everything was great and I just ignored the fact the customer service was non-existent. The ONLY reason why Vee's even got me to become a regular is because I'm very greedy and the food IS really good, there's no denying that. And because a lot of west indian establishments have no customer service skills, sadly, its something some people become used to. Thats when I have to realize that I am a paying customer so why would I ever have to become comfortable with beastly, distasteful behavior from a staff member who's suppose to be taking my order. I have NEVER been to Vee's and spent less than $30 dollars because not only am I greedy but when I find hidden gems in Brooklyn, I like to keep my friends updated. So every time I have been there I have ordered food not only for myself but for the rest of my family and friends, 4 orders or more. This night in particular, my boyfriend's mom sent us to get her some food and of course we wanted some as well. I am disgusted to even be writing about the experience that ensued. I came in to make my order, and as always there's a lot of confusion by the cash register because there is never a line and so my struggle begins! After decoding the order sequence of the people ahead of me, I determine that I am the next customer in line to place my order so I stand behind the woman that is currently placing her order, indicating I am the "next" customer. As the woman completes her order and steps away from the register, I step up to the cashier as she says "next." As I begin to give my order, I am rudely and abruptly interrupted by the cashier and a puzzled look surfaces as I hear her say "next" again. I know that I am next so I am wondering why this woman screams out next when I am standing less than 2 feet away. A few customers around me then start shouting out there orders since the cashier is continuously screaming "NEXT". A gentleman behind me witnessing the situation now steps in and says to the cashier "excuse me, the young lady is waiting to order". You would think after the man told her something, I would maybe get a "How many I help you?", or even if you don't have any manners, maybe even a "Whats your order?". Nope, instead I get a graceless, savage lightskin female with short boyish blonde hair looking in my face, literally barking "NEXT!!! NEXT!!!! NEXT!!!" I think I might of been shocked for a minute because I seriously just stared at the lady in disbelief. My boyfriend now intervenes because he sees the situation escalating and he is very much a peace maker. He says to me, "we do not have to tolerate this kind of treatment and we can leave if you like". I was still in shock so I just followed his lead as he lead me to the door. As we walk out the restaurant, the situation is now registering. At this point, I feel extremely disrespected and make a U-turn. I kindly walk up to the female that has now led me to believe that she is a barbarian and ask her "what is the issue?" Without even allowing her to properly respond, I start to express my dissatisfaction. Things are getting intense so a different restaurant employee steps-in to diffuse the tension. I don't want to ramble and I don't want to focus on the animal that found her self behind the counter in a "customer service" position. I must say that if I was ever to come back to Vee's, it would be because of the woman that stepped in to save the situation from turning into something that would have ended up on WorldStar. This lady went above and beyond the call of customer service to appease us, calm us down and she ultimately accomplished what we set out to do in the first place, get food! We were adamant about leaving after the previous event, and when we make up our mind about doing something, very seldom do we shift our stance but this woman reassured us that we were in good hands and that she would personally prepare our food herself. I wish there were more woman like her representing these establishments because she exemplifies the ideal customer service representative. If Vee's had more admirable employees like the woman that my boyfriend and I encountered tonight, I would've given Vee's 5 star plus if i could! Word of advice to Vee: If you want your restaurant to flourish, stop hiring strays from off the street and invest in more reputable people like the wonderful woman who was helped us tonight. read more

I am super excited to share my dining experience at Vee's Restaurant. The food is great!! To date, I have tried the Fried Chicken which is extremely flavorful with or without any added gravy or sauce, my first time trying Cow's Foot (OMG, where has it been all my life!), the Macaroni & Cheese overflows with cheesiness and being from the South... tastes like my Grandmother use to bake, the Rice & Peas and White Rice is cooked to perfection, probably better than "Martha Stewart's Cooking School recipe" (google it), the Steamed Veggies are delicious and nearly slides down your throat without chewing, the Oxtail (and I loooooove Oxtail and eat it often) is good as well.... appears to be boiled with a traditional recipe from Jamaica (I give it 4 out of 5 stars.... everything else all 5's) Out of the homemade juices, I will fight you for a 32 ounce cup of the lemonade which is made with brown sugar or the Carrot Juice that I think is prepared with condensed milk. Now let's talk about the notorious customer service complaints.... first off, I am a true believer that you will receive the same energy that you omit. With that said, each time that I have visited the restaurant, I entered with my normal high-spirited, bouncy self, eager to devour the entire kitchen.... and on each occasion I was completely tickled by the personalities of the staff including the wonderfully-confident female owner. Are they feisty? HELL yes!! But who wouldn't be in an establishment that has 20 years of service dedicated to their community in a predominantly male owned industry!! When I explained to the staff that they have a reputation of being a little less than nice at all times; they were very aware and said simply, "It's not that we are mean or rude. Some people don't have patience when they visit our establishment. We have a lot of foot traffic since we are located on Nostrand Avenue, we also receive a very high rate of calls for pickup." In short, both the staff and management at Vee's are dedicated to providing the highest quality of great tasting Caribbean cuisine and ensuring that each person that telephones or wonders into the restaurant is greeted and served in the timeliest manner... even when you and I may act as if we have no time to wait. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit! Closest experience you will get to actually dining in a quaint shop in Jamaica. (attitude and all LOL) read more

I visited Vee's with a friend a couple of weeks ago. Things were a bit disorganized, but the our server was perfectly pleasant and very helpful. They were out of a couple of things, but we did go towards the end of the night. The food was plentiful, tasty, and filling, and they happily split our check and accepted our credit cards. I would give them 5 stars for their price but reality is their food is okay. Their oxtails are not juicy nor is the meat falling off the bone but for $10 thats what you get. Coney Island's Footprints has to die for oxtails and So does Negril (I'd pay the extra $8 bucks for savory meaty oxtails).
